    This actually sounds a lot like my actuarial intern life right now. Coming from uni, its a major shocker you barely touch or hear of R studios being used as work. Its mainly prophet modelling, data conversion tools, excel VBA and now Alteryx. I don't even see ANYTHING i learnt at uni being in the life insurance department

    Hey! Aspiring actuary here. I've been considering taking an internship to start out. Do you have any advice for learning how to tackle these kinds of projects you mention? I've never done anything like that.

    • @Bella-the-Actuary
      @Bella-the-Actuary  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Great question 😃 The first few weeks of your internship, your manager or team will train you on the projects so that you can get a basic understanding of what’s going on. Then, once I start working on a project, I like to Google/research any basic programming questions that I may have. After I complete a first draft, I’ll show my manager and ask for feedback. And then it’s just a cycle of improvement and feedback.
      I’d highly recommend developing your technical skills so that you can do the work requested of you during your internship, especially in Excel and R Studio, as these are the most common applications. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    hi! im an aspiring actuary, and I had recently applied and been offered an internship at Corebridge Financial in Houston for next summer! I just wanted to know, what was the onboarding process like between getting the printed written offer and actually starting on your first day? was it a long process or was it relatively quick?
    enjoyed the office tour, I’ll definitely be checking out that coffee machine out if its still there!

      Congrats on your internship offer! 🥳 🎉 That’s awesome! If I remember correctly, the length of the onboarding process was somewhere in the middle, but it could have changed since a year and a half ago when I went through it.
      The office tour in the video is actually from their location in California! I’d definitely be curious to know if they have that coffee machine in Houston 😇

    Hey Bella! I am a college student majoring in Computer Science and I originally wanted to be a Data Scientist but now I am thinking of switching to becoming an Actuary. How did you land your internship, was there any websites or other methods that you used ? I am currently working as a Data Quality Analyst while in college, would I need to take some exams before applying to any actuary internships? Any tips you have would be very appreciated!

    • @Bella-the-Actuary

      Hi Tanner! Thanks so much for watching 😃 It’s great that you already have some computer science/data science experience, as coding can be part of an actuary’s job. However, I would recommend taking at least one actuarial exam before getting an actuarial internship for 2 reasons: 1) to see if you like the math that actuaries do and 2) because most actuarial internships require you to have passed one exam. Please check out this video about getting an actuarial internship to find the answers to your other questions!

    Do you enjoy actuarial work, like is there a good balance between free time and work, and do you like doing the various projects assigned to you? I am wondering if it might be repetitive or not interesting while choosing a career. Is it similar to data science a lot, and if I were to major in data science, would I be able to work in the actuarial science field or would I need to take more math classes? Thank you for the insightful and great video. Appreciate your content!

    • @Bella-the-Actuary
      @Bella-the-Actuary  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching 🙂When you are beginning your actuarial career, a lot of your free time is spent studying for the actuarial exams. But once you attain your FSA or FCAS and you don't need to study any more, the work-life balance is very good.
      There are a lot of different roles you can work in as an actuary, along with different industries you can work in. You could definitely find work that is non-repetitive if that is a priority to you. I'd recommend watching this video to hear more about the different kinds of actuarial work: ruclips.net/video/AcV-UgdX26Q/видео.html. Generally, though, I think consulting actuaries have the most variation in their day-to-day work, so that could be something to look into.
      Actuarial work has some overlapping skills with data science, such as data analysis and coding in popular programs like Python. So, you could work as an actuary with a major in data science, but I would recommend taking a few classes in calculus, stats, and/or insurance to make sure that you are on the right track for the actuarial exams.

    • @Bella-the-Actuary
      @Bella-the-Actuary  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@riyascreations4634 A lot of actuarial roles are for insurance companies, so more on the financial/company side of things. But, there are insurance companies that are more "community-focused" - like mutual insurers who gives their shares back to the customers, or insurance companies with unique products such as Trupanion, which does pet insurance. If giving back to your community is important to you, there are definitely actuarial roles/industries you can find for that!

    I like how actuarial science uses math, but do you also need to have an interest or passion for insurance? I’m asking because I know little to nothing about insurance and I’m considering actuarial science as a potential career 😅

      @Bella-the-Actuary  5 месяцев назад

      Hi! I specifically answer this question in this video: ruclips.net/video/AcV-UgdX26Q/видео.html
      But to give a short answer, you don’t neeeed a passion for insurance - you can build it up by learning about it. When I first started studying to be an actuary, I definitely wasn’t head over heels about working in the insurance industry. But actuarial work is fascinating, and I’ve grown to like applying my learnings to insurance problems.

I want to explore more opportunities. Is there any advice you can give me on how to pursue actuarial science internships or something along those lines. I will be a senior this upcoming fall, so idk if it's too late to switch interests. Any advice would help!

    • @Bella-the-Actuary
      @Bella-the-Actuary  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hello! Let me start off by saying that plenty of actuaries didn't find out about the career path or start taking exams until after college, so it is not too late to switch. It's really great that you found the actuarial club - I'd recommend you keep attending! I would suggest applying for an actuarial internship the summer after you graduate, and tailoring your resume to show your actuarial skills (coding, classes, projects, etc). I would also highly recommend taking your first actuarial exam - either exam FM or exam P. Let me know if you have any other questions! 😊 Best of luck! 🍀

      I’d recommend taking math classes like calculus and statistics in high school. I also took some classes that were interesting to me but didn’t relate to actuarial science, and then in college I have taken more actuarial-focused classes. So, I think it’s good to get some exposure to the actuarial field in high school, but college is usually where people do most of their actuarial coursework.

      Hi Ethan! This is the place to ask any questions you have - I am happy to answer 😊
      I had this internship the summer before my senior year of college, so yes - I was still in school!
      For this internship, my work did tend to use more of financial mathematics because it was in the life insurance space. But actuarial science itself is pretty broad - you can work more with other types of math, like statistics, in property and casualty spaces.
      Let me know if you have any other questions! Best of luck with your last year of school! 😃

      @ethankoehler870 8 месяцев назад

      @@Bella-the-Actuary OK thank you! I am from a small town in Iowa. I noticed you are from Wisconsin, but the internship is in California. I do not want to go far from home, so my question is, would it be necessary for me to move to a bigger city? Secondly, how do you go about the actuarial exams? During school or after graduating? Before finding work or during employment? Last question is should I become familiar with excel and/or other kinds of software that might be useful?

    • @Bella-the-Actuary
      @Bella-the-Actuary  8 месяцев назад

      @@ethankoehler870 It is not necessary to move to a big city. Some actuarial/insurance are located in more suburban areas. There is also the opportunity to work fully remote as an actuary! However, a lot of actuarial jobs are located in big cities - but not all of them.
      It's most common for students to start taking actuarial exams during college. Most entry-level actuarial jobs require that you have passed at least one actuarial exam, and most students graduate with one or two exams. Then, once you get your first full-time actuarial job, you can continue taking the actuarial exams while you're working.
      I'd recommend you take a look at my video that talks about what kind of coding/technical experience actuaries need. I go over Excel and other software! You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/KgOfClkiJtc/видео.html
