- ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Somewhat of a rarity today in the form of a (genuinely?) approachable sudoku that still absolutely delivers on the "joy count". It's called Knight Lite and it's by Just Kirb and it ought to be solvable even if you're new to variant sudoku. Let us know in the comments, especially if you're a new viewer, whether you enjoyed this one!
Play the puzzle at the link below:

Having watched dozens if not hundreds of Simon's CTC videos, I immediately jumped to coloring the entire grid and managed to do it in 7:25, I'm happy with that. 🙂
Same! (7:12) I think this is the first time ever that I was faster than Simon!
Nicely done! Mine was 13:43, which is good for me.
Well done! It was 05:54 for me! Wouldn’t have managed without years of training from Simon :)
I did the same! Everything was pretty easy after that
managed to do it in 4:59 since i'm fairly good with chess sudoku, although i had to come back to the video to then notice i was trying to do king's move logic instead of knight's move 😭
New to variants and I struggled with the break-in with this puzzle. Using the video as a hint then pausing once I noticed the coloring pattern I was able to fully color the grid. After making a mistake filling in the numbers, I was able to backtrack and find my mistake. I am pleased to say I was able to get the correct solve without any of Simon's help beyond the color-coding. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how the different ways we figured the values for each color. Thank you.
Way to go
Nice work!
I've enjoyed 'Killer' Sudoku for years and came across 'Cracking the Cryptic' a couple of months ago. I watched some of the videos of these variants and thought they were completely beyond me. But I've started watching the shorter videos (thinking that if the video is shorter, then it's probably an easier puzzle). Even having watched several videos, I jumped straight in and pencil marked the thermometers before getting stuck. When Simon mentioned the colour coding, I too paused the video, then managed to complete the puzzle on my own in about 20 minutes.
Funnily enough, I was watching another video, which Mark was racing through. He commented that 'if this puzzle doesn't slow down then we may not be able to use it as it will be too easy'. I thought 'No, please leave the easy ones on - that's how I started doing these puzzles'!
Joining the discord is very recommended even if you are not good at sudokus. The daily sudoku channel has a new puzzle every day that is not too difficult. I've gone from solving only classic sudokus at a medium level to solving the dailies in slow time (dinosaur) to kinda fast (two hats)! You learn so much from doing those. Easy puzzles are indeed fun!
I think what this puzzle does, perhaps more than almost any I've seen before, is to make easily discernible the joy of pure clean logic. That is of course why most of us enjoy sudoku and similar puzzles, but in reading through the comments it's obvious that this one really struck a chord with most people. Simple, fun, and yet still deeply satisfying.
Finally! A Simon puzzle with a simple rule set (under 100 words). Like this one a lot -- thanks! 😀
Oh that was fun!! Again, I wouldn't have known to color without your hint, but from there I did the coloring and the rest of the puzzle myself. Woohoo! More of these please, or at least one a month :). Exhilarating!
I always love the popcorn episodes of CtC, but it was very enjoyable to be able to solve this puzzle before watching. It made me feel quite smart. 😊
Thank you for today’s edition of cracking the cryptic! Always makes me happy when you upload
What a wonderful puzzle. Difficulty does not always align with enjoyment. Great video!
Got it in 40 minutes, my first variant sudoku ever! Love the channel, cheers
Congrats!
3:38 for me. Very fun, but not sure what I'm going to do for the rest of the evening... Time to go search the back catalogue :)
This was surprisingly hard for a 6x6 but it was beautiful! I love puzzles like this that make you color the whole grid before getting a single digit but once you do they all get resolved instantaneously. It always feels like magic!
What a fun puzzle! And a very cool construction
BUT, without this channel and the numerous lessons by Simon and Mark, I'm not sure I would have found it nearly as straight-forward to solve. So, thanks, Gents!
09:01 for me! Usually I don't take less time to solve puzzles than Simon so I'm pretty proud of this one!
Solved this in just over 10 minutes, what a lovely puzzle it was! 6x6 puzzles are always so much fun I find! Thanks for this one Simon!
It took me a few false starts to find the right strategy - which, for me, was using letters. Once I had the grid filled with unique letter, I could use the thermos to figure out the order. Solved in 6:53. (and it was lovely to do this after ~120 mins spent on yesterday's puzzle, trying not to cheat, only to break the puzzle.)
I agree that it was a lot easier (for me at least) using letters than colours (which I tried at first, and got hopelessly confused). It's something about it being easier to think about ideas in words when you have letters.
This puzzle seems to be a much more elegant version of my puzzle featured about a week ago 😅. My props to the setter, that was a very beautifully set puzzle, they did a much better job with the concept than I could have dreamt of doing.
I liked this one. I used letters instead of the colours used by Simon to highlight the possibilities. Seems to work better at seeing the possibilities. But hey if Picasso wants to paint the grid who am I to object 😀
4:59, super enjoyable 6x6 thermo knight. Definitely of a kind with some others that have shown up on Discord or in puzzle hunts, highly recommend to those new to variants.
Beat me by 1 second. I forgot about the antiknight rule for a bit at the beginning.
I'm so happy and proud to finish it in 04:15. Quite an achievement to solve the puzzle in less than 5 minutes 😅
The logic is simple and beautiful.
Thank you!)
4:27 for me, definitely a fun and approachable puzzle!
Delightful little puzzle, and it's nice to have a quick solve on the channel from time to time!
Enjoyed the "genuinely approachable" puzzle. Once in blue moon it happens that such a short video is posted and I can finish much faster than Simon 🤗. Great fun. Keep on cracking.
23:00 for me. Took me a while to find the way in, but really good logic between the knight's move and the thermos. I used letters rather than colours, as I find it easier to spot the knight's move restrictions. My solve path was exactly the same as Simon's on this one. Not often I get to solve the puzzles that Simon does. Makes a pleasant change from just watching the master at work.
I do like 6x6. Rangsk does a daily series. What interesting is that you can get some real complexity in what might at first glance be something that looks easy and not worht the effort
5:09 What a fantastic little coloring exercise.
I don't know if this is because I've been watching so many of Simon's videos that my brainwaves have synced up with his, but before watching this video I attempted the puzzle on my own -- and used the EXACT SAME COLOURS for every digit!!! We are so in-sync, Simon!
12:16 for me, what a beautiful puzzle, it comes together so perfectly. Truly one of the best designed puzzles I've done.
4:33 for me and very enjoyable. I instantly went to letters, which I find to be a lot easier than colors in puzzles like this.
4:35 for me and almost same: coloring from start to map, then letters from middle alphabet to order, last swap letters to numbers.
I needed the color clue to get started since I'm awful at Sudoku, but it was a fun puzzle.
Edit: I'm glad I paused as soon as he placed the first color because I followed a completely different path.
It was exactly the same for me. Stopped after Simon colored the first cell and solved it on my own in about ten minutes.
Coloring is definitely the way to do this. Best 4 minute 16 second puzzle I've ever done.
That was beautiful! A bit of a head-scratcher at first, and I ran into a few dead ends, but ended up doing it more or less Simon's way.
Very enjoyable puzzle, anyway.
Solved this in just 24 minutes. I would never have been able to do this 6 months ago. This is the buzz and affirmation that I needed today.
Second CtC puzzle I've ever solved! 14:32. Very enjoyable. Effectively a single thermometer in hiding!
Got it in 6:01 today! I was solver number 4224. It was a fun challenge to figure out how to disambiguate the color pairs in columns 4 and 6, and I had a great "Aha!" moment when I spotted it!
That puzzle was far from the worst.
It gave me a confidence burst.
It so made my day
As i watched Simon play
And for once in life, I finished first!
4:48 for me! definitely helped i immediately saw some colouring logic, then ended up colouring the whole grid pretty smoothly. Enjoyable little puzzle!
when i saw the time it took Simon to solve this puzzle i thought "if he can solve in 12m i surely can solve it within a hour" and so i did 50m 39s, fun coloring exercise it has been
WOW! For a quick little puzzle, that was just so enjoyable! Loved it!
Nice colouring and mathematical ordering puzzle, completed by me in 6:58 so must be easy as I take longer than that on GAS puzzles! 😀 The first and last time I will beat a CTC solver time but only because I didn’t need to explain to others what I was doing.
5:24 - I do like these knights move puzzles but using letters is so much easier than colours for these problems.
My 5:14 says otherwise...😜
Totally delightful!! ❤
Agree. This was a fun puzzle. Hope there's more like this one.
Brilliant that was. I watched you after I did it on sven pad. 8 minutes and I'm still buzzing now. Fantastic as always Simon. If it takes you less than 40 minutes I always sven pad it and I've got hundreds I haven't finished even when I've seen you do it. All the best CtC is the best 🎉
3:30 here. The coloring was fun and very straightforward, and surprisingly it didn’t take me too long to realize there are 5 bulbs of different colors, therefore the sixth color was a 6 and just worked my way backwards.
I got exactly 3:30 as well!
I've started watching Simon in the previous couple months. I am new to logic puzzles. This was the first one I was able to complete before watching the video! Better still, my logic was very much the same as yours Simon! Thank you for sharing.
I really enjoyed that. First time I've paused the video and solved it myself instead of doing my best trying to follow along.
One of my favorite that you’ve featured!
This is the first one I've tried to do after listening to the intro and seeing the length of the video... it was indeed fun!
Finished in 9:20. A delightfully approachable puzzle.
4:40 I needed Simon's opening salvo to figure out how to begin. I began with colors, but changed to letters. Every bulb had a different letter from A to E -- I kept 6 letterless. I think I made life more difficult using letters, as I filled out the grid with letters and 6s and had to decode the letters. I finally noticed A < E < D < B < C < 6.
12:40 I encountered the same issue with letter pairs. The resolution is that blue < gray.
I don't think that I've ever finished one of these before without using the video for help. This was very nice.
Thanks for sharing this. I don't have time for long puzzles before work, but this was sweet and wonderful!
This was the first puzzle with the knight's constraints that I actually felt good about solving. Managed to get it done in about 9 minutes, and didn't get frustrated like I have with other chess sudoku puzzles in tthe past. I've always struggled with Chess..
I used a similar coloring strategy as Simon, but i started with with tip of the thermo instead of the bulb 😂. Then cross referenced the colors with 6s.
Thank you for showcasing these easier variant puzzles to help us get started ❤ it's really helpful.
5:26 this was really fun, turned out to be a full coloring exercise for me and filled in the numbers in the final seconds 😄
though i started with noticing SPOILERS that the bulbs of the thermos in the first two boxes all see each other, so i colored them 4 ways, and then R2C3 abd R2C4 also see all of those 4 and each other so they were the remaining ones which was beautiful because each one saw something in a different way
This puzzle was a pleasure to solve. When I started I knew what I had to do, but only the foggiest how. Figured out colors and then what order they were ranked. Thirty three minutes later, I had solved it and if it hadn't been for Mark and Simon, iI wouldn't have even know how to even start. Gentlemen, I doff my cap to all y'all.
I love these type of color puzzles!
A lovely way to start the day!
5:51 a lovely coloring puzzle which are always my favorite
2:55 For me, lettering the thermo X is definitely the way to go, I found going from there and letting the puzzle unfold much better than chasing letters one by one
5:26. Skadoosh!
Love ya, Simon.
Only about twice Simon's time, so I'm delighted with that.
Finished in 20:36. It took me a while to figure out how to break in, but once I started coloring the right cells, it all flowed. Nice puzzle.
Love this puzzle!
2:56 beginning to end, although it helps that I don't have to talk and explain as I go the way Simon does. A little too easy, maybe, but it's still always nice to see Simon tackle a puzzle.
One of the tricks I have always found helpful in 6x6 puzzles is to work one side (left or right) first and then carry it over to the other side. It doesn't always work, but it works very nicely on this puzzle.
9:22 for me. Was pretty fun. I love when coloring things is the answer.
I will never again solve a puzzle in less than 1/3 of the time of Simon. I will bask in this.
6:30 which I am very happy with! Spent a minute or so thinking about it, and figured the thermos had to point to all 6 values and went with colouring
Very satisfying and smooth puzzle. I did need the hint to use color, and Simon worked out the remaining digits after 6 much more elegantly than I did, but it's nice to see something of my skill level once in a while :)
I always appreciate the full coloring of the grid. Reminds me of stained glass.
This one took me longer than I'd like to admit, as it didn't immediately occur to me to use colors (I really should use colors for solving more often), but once I started doing that, it was very straightforward, and the way the thermos show the mapping between colors and digits is just beautiful
Lovely little puzzle.
10:03 for me! lost a couple minutes with a wrong idea but once I found the right start it just... flowed
Brilliant, really fun little puzzle for sure
Brilliant puzzle! I solved this with letters A to F instead of colors. Letters are great because you can do both center and corner pencil marks with them (though I used only the center marks for this one). Thank you Sven for implementing letters!
I love coloring puzzles. Quick and fun solve
lovely puzzle :)
I was stuck on how to start so I watched a little bit of the video. The second he made the first cell green i slapped my forehead and thought to myself "of course it's coloring, what else would it be"
Yeah, I find it hard to believe that someone who had never seen variant Sudoku before would be able to recognize it as a coloring puzzle.
I got 4:56. It almost felt like a little like one of the daily pencil puzzles. A fun bit of the morning routine.
Nice fun bite-sized video :)
Wasn't that absolutely lovely. Great start to the day!
Finished in 3:33 🏆 ... that was an absolute GAS! Heck, I don't even manage most GAS puzzles in that time 🤣
Your videos are always so impressive, and I'm pretty much always thinking, "There's no way I could do that" by the end. But the title this time inspired me to try to crack one myself. 101 minutes later... Bam! LoL. Thanks for the videos!
As always, wonderful puzzle. I'm really proud of my time today: 4:25
Fun! 4:34. Easy if you’ve seen the 9x9 versions before. It seems like the genre of “Color everything and disambiguate by thermos” should have a name.”
"Puzzles for This Guy *finger pointing at me *"
“Color everything and disambiguate by thermos” - That sounds like a name made up by Leanardo of Quirm. 🙂
Ah, this was a delight! 30 minutes for me, because I started in box 2 and struggled awhiile. Simon, brilliant logician that he is, had the nous to start in box 1. I am tickled, however, that both of us immediately resorted to coloring, and once colored, solved in 30 seconds.
3:53 for me, which is probably my record for any puzzle on this channel. I just started colouring from the top left hand box and everything just worked out.
Coloring made this puzzle super easy after double checking the knights move part, I only started to color so the cells would look different and quickly saw it was helping me place "numbers". Probably my first non-9x9 sudoku that I have done.
11:08 for me. Loved the bit at the end to disambiguate the pairs
That is crazy! Yeah, I did it!
I love the sort of puzzle where you color everything and then place all the digits in one go.
took me 7 minutes, very simple and nice colouring exercise
3:45 for me. nice into into knights move puzzle.
Took me a second to get going, but wowie, that was a good 'un
Definitely a coloring puzzle. 5:59 was my time :)
I've solved a handful of variant sudokus before, but I really didn't know where to go with this one. It turns out my problem was trying to place possible *numbers*, but once I watched the first minute or so and saw that you were placing *colours* to indicate which cells are the same without knowing what number they are yet, I had an "aha!" moment and was able to fully solve the puzzle.
Quick Easy, and pretty nice and quaint.
10:35 this was awesome, I really enjoyed it
Knights move is my favorite restriction. Its so powerful.
The first "not-GAS" sudoku on this channel that I solved in under 5 minutes. Very pleasant
