    Is there such a thing as state-of-the-art manual milling machines and lathes? Or is the best mill/lathe a CNC one? Curious what the best-in-class machinists use when so many use 60-70yo machines.

      I have a Leadwell MCV 1500i+ with 40" Y and I love it. It takes up less space than similar machines that only have 30" of Y. (cough cough mynx7500 cough cough) A Haas VF8 and VF9 are both 40"Y. I actually have a list of machines around that size on a spreadsheet cuz we were looking at some new machines a while back
      just looked at it. Makino V99, Okuma Millac 1052V, and a bunch of Moris on the list.

    I've lived in studio apartments that were smaller than the inside of that MYNX 7500 mill. To be fair though, I'm sure the rent on my studio apartment was cheaper than the monthly payments of this mill.

    In this age of electric cars and renewable energy, there is a lot of ignorance of how effective that is in an industrial environment. Like I have heard people say that the Tesla building will be running off of the solar panels on the roof. People don't realize how much electricity a real manufacturer uses. Rows and rows of machine tools with 10 , 20 , 40 horsepower motors or a die casting operation like Tesla is going to be running. Not that I'm trying to bash Tesla, I would just like to inform people as to what kinds of energy consumption/bills a manufacturer has to deal with. Going green takes energy and it costs big money, solar panels and wind generators can keep the lights on, but that's about it.

    • @teekteekteekteek
      @teekteekteekteek 8 месяцев назад

      I have to disagree…
      We run a machine shop with about 20CNC machines. Even if all are running, we are getting fully powered by our solar panels 80% of the day in 70% of the year.
      The roof is only half covered with the panels…
