  • This project consisted of a full length tanuki coat To be transformed into a throw and a pillow. The fur was in excellent condition. The fur was very thick and must have been super warm in its heyday. It also accompanied a headband, as told by the customer that she used to wear it mainly in the 80s. The final measurement of the coat was 56 by 58. The pillow measured 16 by 16. The customer chose to use her lining for the back of the pillow as well as maintaining her monogram. She used a pre quilted backing for the throw.

Wow that really turned out beautiful... I have only recently learned about the animal Racoon-dog or Tanuki after realizing that three of my own jackets were not actually real racoons, but they are from the Racoon-dog animal... A very interesting unique animal. I have a large, long vintage mink coat .... I guess I could do what you have done with it, but I don't have a fur sewing machine so I would have to hand-sew it... I would need to find out where to get those clips that hold the fur in place, also... Years ago I did sew a few fur garments using a regular sewing machine zig-zag stitch, but never had clips and it was very hard to get a perfect result. I am a perfectionist, so I would need to do it right.

The clips can be bought at your local Joanne's or Amazon. Just search sewing clips. On the edge, if using your home machine, I would do a straight stitch first. Long stitches .... Then follow up with a zigzag stitch on the edge. Make sure the fur will hold the stitches together. Inspect the coat, feel it, make sure it's soft and there isn't any dry rot.

Sadly if it is falling apart it will not be able to hold the stitches needed to reconstruct the garment. Does it have dry rot? Does it pull apart with pressure or slight force? Do you hear crunching when you squeeze the garment? Yes to any of the above statement does not bode well for reconstruction.
