If i had that skill maybe i could rescue mine. 7600GS was kinda overkill for Barton 2600+ but i remember call of juarez didn't go well with 9600pro but 7600gs it was playable. And oblivion too no go with 9600pro but 7600gs could manage it.
Damn I had almost the same specs only I used a 2400+. Overclocked it to a 3200+. Played a lot of Battlefield 2 on that thing. With a huge external fan blowing into the open case xD.
The first sound card goes by many names but was originally known as the Ensoniq AudioPCI. Creative bought Ensoniq just as these went into production, so it was later sold as the "Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI" and then later under two or three other annoying names (your CT4750 comes back as the 'Sound Blaster 128'). They're easily recognizable by having only the single chip in a sea of passives on the boards. They're well known for having an incredibly low SNR for the era, much better sounding than pretty much any other card at the time outside of specialty gear for audio engineers, so the Napster generation would buy these and plug them directly into their HiFis. On the other hand, they exclusively use CPU mixing so your system performance suffers anytime you have audio running, which means it constantly hurts game performance.
Interesting, I didn't know they had such a following. I've got some faster CPU's I can use it with, so might give it another try. Seems my clock speeds of my FSB were affecting the sounds in GTA SA
Tip for wiring up front panel headers: Most manufacturers by the ATX era would have the decency to point all signal pins points towards Pin 1 of the FPC pin group on the board, so for example if Pin 1 is on the left, you can expect all the signal pins to be leftmost. I figured this out when I swapped dozens of boards into my ATX bench for testing one weekend and needed to quickly figure out which were the pins for the power switch.
Ahh yes, good tip! I've seem as well pin 1 is marked on the connector with a little arrow, so I try to match that on the MB. But will keep that in mind
Yeah that’s normal, it’s detected as an Athlon XP because…it is, an Athlon XP. As for graphics card recommendations 🤔 this was the era of the Radeon 9500 Pro & 9600 Pro. I wouldn’t recommend going much faster than that (9700-9800 pro) as those really need an Athlon 64 or equivalent to reach their full potential. The 9600 Pro can be found on eBay fairly cheaply £20-£30 but the 9500 Pro commands quite the premium for some reason.
Correct! Indeed it was a Athlon XP all along. Initially the motherboard was showing a clock speed of 1.2Ghz, so that led me to believe that is was not a Athlon Xp. Until I googled the CPU model while editing the video, Doh!! Yeah I was looking at a 9600 Pro as a good option. Seems ATI has some great options in that class
entirely likely the premium command is a simple supply issue; the 9500s were all based off of the same chips that went into 9700s and thus it was never in ATI's best interest to move such products in as large a volume as the full flagship parts that can maximize profit margin (and is why they needed a 9600 Pro based off of a more cost effective GPU for a midrange part).
That motherboard's I/O was the standard for early ATX, though that standard only lasted for about five minutes. Those shields can be hard to come by because most ATX cases back then came with a shield installed from the factory (that was usually held in pace with a screw) that worked with those motherboards, so the shield that came with the board wasn't used, and generally ended up being tossed out at some point. Years later, the board gets pulled from the case and sold without an I/O plate. I recently picked up several old motherboards with no I/O plates that use these same layout, and a local computer store that has lots of new old stock and actually sells some used parts has a box of old I/O plates that I picked through; I found about five of this type - even better, they gave them to me for free!
@@thesmokingcap If you have a friend or local shop with a 3D printer (my UPS Store down the street has one), you can get the bog standard ATX covers printed without modifications, should work fine here (and for any other boards you have with standard ATX I/O).
Nice fun build! I have a soft spot for W2000, at least after the first service pack. The stability after using 98 was phenomenal. As Jon said below, a 9600 Pro is a great card for a fast Athlon XP machine.
I used to use W2000 on 8 PC's even when XP came out. Ran seti@home distributed computing project then BOINC and folding@home etc. W2000 on an old p3 box got to just over a years uptime without a UPS but had to go off as the room it was in had to have new carpet.
I have the same problem with a Radeon 9800 Pro, exactly the same. Incidentally, I also have a similar configuration, but I operate the board in a modern environment. My mainboard is the cherry red PCChips M811 with Athlon XP 2400+. A modern magenta fractal design Pop Air case with a 5.25 bay is used as the case. The cooler of the Athlon XP is magenta and the fan is 80 mm with RGB effects. Sound card SB X-Fi, and SATA SSDs with PCI controller card. And now it comes, the GeForce 960 graphics card is mounted vertically and connected via an AGP to PCIE adapter with a riser cable. It even works 😁 Of course it's all total overkill, but that's supposed to be a totally crazy retro system. I also have a few other PCs with more timely hardware and gray cases.
Oh wow! Sounds like it's been kitted out with some nice parts as well. I didn't know there was a PCI-e to AGP adapter, I might have to try one out. Getting cases with 5 1/4 drive bays now is getting harder
Remember to replace the thermal compound on your GPU's! You could try re-flowing the solder on the VRAM of that graphics card with memory errors. Also the problem may not be the vram but the old capacitors on the card.
Good tips, Yes I've done the thermal paste on this one. But haven't re flowed any memory chips or done any capacitors. But could be a good option to explore
You can do the io shield cover using the metal from a milk can or a soda can. The milk cans are from tin you can mold and cut easily, the soda can are aluminum instead. You just need to draw the wholes in a paper sheet and cut the straighten can.
I would install an exhaust fan at the top also will help when you put a faster video card in due to rising hot temperatures in the case will help if you choose to overclock the faster Athlon XP also. As for video cards a geforce 4 ti 4600-4800 or an ATi 9600 pro would be great video cards to run with an Athlon XP.
I made a Windows 98se PC out of parts. I use a 3200XP Barton 1 GB ram and all my drives are SATA with a GeForce 6600 GT on a AGP X8 bus I now it is overbord, but I used parts, I have taken out of old PCs. The sound card is a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1. The motherbord is a Asrock K7VT6. The only thing I got was a SATA PCI card, I got a VIA one as it used the same one on the motherboard.
Apologies for the slow reply. The best PC's or the ones I enjoy the most are made out of spare parts recovered from PC's like what you found. You can often get some good wiggle room on OS choices as well with such specs. Only problems I've had are Nvidia drivers under Windows 9X and more than 512MB Of RAM.
One of the things is not like the others... There was no cable management in the olden days. It doesn't really matter when the case isn't transparent and you don't really need a liquid helium cooling solution for your GPU.
I don't know if it's the bios or some jumpers that lowers the microprocessor speed, probably with faster ram it would detect more speed but depends on the motherboard. Having a Athlon xp myself I couldn't figure out how or why.
i'd totally hunt down a radeon 9600xt - it is a year and a bit older than the athlon XP but totally a great budget card for w98/me/2k/xp. otherwise I'd just try to find another ti4200, they're just so good.

Like! That CPU is an Athlon Xp 1900+ with a default frequency of 1600 mhz (12x133). You have too manually select FSB 133 to make it run at default frequency. At 1320 mhz it is underclocked.

I totally skipped Intel P4 and P4 HT. From P2/P3 (slot 1) I went directly to Athlon XP. I made a system with an Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton core) on a mobo with VIA chipset. I had a Ati Radeon 9250 graphic card with 256M VRAM. I used XP and as I updated from SP1, to SP2 and then SP3, I also upgraded the memory from 3x256M to 3x512M and to 2x512M+1G (DDR). It was snappy, stable but after updating to SP3, XP felt not so well. I played many hours on that system and I (for the first time) uset broadband internet to play online and browse the web. All in all, that computer was well used for 5-6 years; I had to take it apart when the graphics card died and I got a better deal on a new LGA 775 motherboard with PCIe.

I remember playing many games from GTA (Vice City and SA) to AoE 2, Diablo 2 , Uru, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Half Life, Tomb Rider, Prince of Persia, almost anything I liked. Yes, old games, no AAA titles but I really enjoyed that build. Besides I was proud that it worked so well because I built it. And it was also my mutimedia hub, I hooked the video output of the GPU to my CRT TV and watched movies from DVD or "backups" or simply watched satellite TV shows with a TV Tuner... Oh, and playing mp3s in Winamp what memories.
I had a MicronPC case that used those same kind of standoffs. It was a cool looking case so I was determined to use it (in my case it was an Athlon Thunderbird build) but yea, those standoffs can be annoying.
Very annoying indeed! Some of the other stand offs are the typical ones, but some aren't. MicronPC make some nice tall cases. It would have been a nice build!
Ohhh good question, I think I'll have to download a tool such as GPU-z or something to find that out. It's a MX440SE so Wikipedia suggests a 128bit bus

At 10/2002 i buyed my first PC. It was a Athlon XP 2200+ on Elitegroup K7S6A, 512MB Ram and a Geforce TI 4200 64MB.

Yeah it was a great OS, quite stable I've found as well. But with good networking support. I'm thinking a 9600 Pro might be a good option as well

I ended up having some jumper issues on the next AMD build as the RAM was running at the wrong clock speeds, causing the machine to crash

Try to find a MB/socketA/ with sata plus max ram 3gb ddr400 plus 9600 Pro or 9700Pro.THe good cpu from socketA is 2400+ and above.

You should really invest in a 3D printer... my advice is to get an Ender-3 V2 Neo.
