As predicted, there are a few comments from misunderstood viewers about killing animals and not bringing out all the meat. I don't usually respond to such but here it goes, hopefully clearing it up for future viewers. In summary, No, I did not carry out all the meat from the animals shot, just what I could carry. Tahr (and ALL other mammals such as deer, pigs, etc were introduced to New Zealand as the country was originally only populated by birds and reptiles (NO MAMMALS). Himalayan Tahr and Chamois were introduced to New Zealand in the early days of European settlement for sport. Both animals have found the Southern Alps of the South Island ideal habitat, but have become a major threat to the ecosystems in these alpine areas according to certain government agencies and if the numbers are not kept under control by recreational hunters, Helicopters are sent in and they shoot the Tahr by the thousands only to be left rotting on the hills. While I believe in utilising as much of any fish or animal I hunt for food, there are limitations. We carried what we could physically carry ( I have a beautiful supply of Tahr and Chamois meat now in my freezer at home) but left the rest on the hills. It may be difficult for viewers in certain parts of the world to understand such, but compared to many countries we have large populations of introduced species such as Deer and Tahr where numbers need to be kept under control which includes help from recreational hunters like myself. If not, numbers get out of control ( This is the case especially with deer, pigs and goats. When numbers are so out of control, this causes lots of devastation to native forests and alike then government agencies like to drop lethal poisons like 1080 which cause a lot of the animals to die slow painful deaths and talk about full eradication in areas which end up with less options to hunt wild meat for hunters. In the ideal scenario, I would love to take all the meat out, but it's not always viable, especially when you are in remote mountains 10 hours hike in, and no Helicopter to bring us out AND with me having ACL surgery just months before. Don't get me started on respecting animals, as most people who are commenting about the above have most likely never shot a rifle, or even held one. Peace
Nobody commenting about bringing out all the meat has ever experienced a hunt like this or dare I say a hunt at all. Your response is spot on although I'm afraid it will fall on deaf ears. As conservationists controlling exotic, invasive animals & plants, which if left unkept will alter the natural ecosystem that has evolved over millions of years, is imperative to preserving such a system. This is conservation on a landscape level by only targeting a few introduced species, and anyone engaging in such a practice of protecting a system by controlling these species should be commended.
One needs to realise that when these species were introduced to NZ their natural predators where not introduced alongside them, and there were no native predators present that could adapt to hunt them, hence the importance of people to fill that predator role.

Your writing does not fall on deaf ears and I greatly appreciate your clarifications here. I'm glad to know you have a freezer full of the meat as well and are working to preserve the natural ecosystem as well as take these magnificent shots at great distances which I was impressed by, but just was feeling uneasy as I didn't have the knowledge yet which you clarified here. Kia ora Archer, here in Aotearoa all land mammals are introduced, as such are pests. If not controlled or eradicated, they are destroying the bush and nature. So hunting is encouraged and apart from not hunting on private property, there are few restrictions. Greetings 😊
The Chopper company is being dealt with away from RUclips, not the place for that here. Harassment of game such as Hazing, which the pilot was doing, I believe is also illegal here in NZ (or used to be). Luckily It was on the last day of the trip with already a few animals taken otherwise It would be a different story.

Awesome video, mate. The old ACL is a pretty common injury, but thankfully, it can be repaired pretty well these days. Imagine a hundred years ago, we'd be left lame for life. Had mine done a few years ago, and have been giving it a good workout ever since. Keep up the good work.

With all the fishing you do in salt water i cant help but wonder if you do any fresh water fishing as NZ has some world famous trout fishing ? It is on my bucket list to visit NZ for some adventures trout fishing and ocean fishing. Stay safe out there Ollie !!
I started on trout fishing for 2 years, then I went to the ocean, and it spoiled the trout here. Salt water fishing is much more fun, more species, more bites...

I've thought about trying for the Wapiti (Elk) ballot here in NZ but think I would rather go to the states and try there with the bow as much better genetics and would be an awesome trip in different terrain. (Need to get into bow hunting first which I am putting off as I know I will become addicted). Plan was also to head to the states for a holiday and buy my setup there as so expensive down here in NZ

I live in a pretty sweet town in Montana and am fortunate enough to be an hours drive from some pretty heavy wilderness areas. Lots of predators, big animals and bigger country.
I always say I don’t hunt for trophy animals out here because every animals is a trophy because they live in trophy country.

Thank you for clarifying that issue with the killing of those animals. There population may need to be kept under control but I just have to admire them. They are beautiful animals, much more gorgeous looking. Goats for example have nothing on these beautiful creatures. Great hiking adventure. New Zealand is just absolutely beautiful.

Ollie, not sure if you know that bullet trajectory is flatter shooting uphill and downhill than horizontal at the range. Maybe you know, maybe you didn't. The horizontal placement looked good for your on camera miss. I once shot an American elk on a steep slope downhill. I aimed at the bottom of the rib cage and took the top of the heart off at 150 yards.
Very new to any semi long range shots etc. lots of practice before my next trip 👍

Hey Ollie, I have a couple of questions for you but first, Congratulations of three successful hunts! I live about 3 hours from the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, my mates and I usually hunt in and below the foothills in the valleys and swamps for Moose, Elk and Deer (Mule and Whitetail). I did a mountain hunt when I was in my early 20's for a Dall Sheep in the Yukon, a hunt that even though I was still in decent shape from playing Rugby and North American Football still was the most taxing hunt physically I have ever been on. Your Tahr look sort of like our Mountain Goats at least in size and they have similar terrain they call home. I have never hunted Goats but I have had Mountain Goat in a stew that was very lovely.
Okay, now the questions. I do appreciate the tough terrain you hiked while on your hunts, about how far are you normally shooting? I think that second Tahr Bull you said it was a 600m shot, is that right? What are you shooting that you feel confident in taking a shot that long? Our Moose hunts are generally in a Swamp or Boreal/Conifer mix forest situation and our shots are typically under 40m if Bow hunting or a maximum of 200m with our rifles (two different seasons). My bow is a Monster Bow Dragon, and for firearms I shoot either my old but trusty Lee Enfield .303 British, or my equally trusty Husqvarna in 30.06. Both shoot fairly flat out to 200m. Second question, how did you manage to haul out all that meat as well as the horns and hides? We have the luxury of having trikes and now quads to bring the animals out and then the butchered carcass is hoisted up a game pole to keep any pesky bears, mountain lions or wolves out of our hard earned meat. To my knowledge you don't have any predators on land to worry about in New Zealand, is that correct? Thank-you for the video, I really enjoyed your adventure, as I do for all your exploits!! PS - Did you manage to catch the ID # off the helicopter or find out the name of the outfitter that those hunters used? If it had been us they would have received a very hostile greeting for destroying a hunt that had been planned out, especially if they had seen you BEFORE landing. I don't know if you managed to catch up to those hunters, but I like to think you did and gave them what for!!

hey man, just a quick reply to the first question with no disrespect to the trip or him: I think the multiple missed animals and using 6 bullets at 480m on 1 animal shows that he is FAR from capable yet alone comfortable shooting at that distance, . the real answer to that is just time and practice behind the rifle, you work your way up like most things to being confident at distance by a lot of practice at closer distances and then at the range. Another key point is just being familiar with your rifle and its ballistics so when it comes to it you can read and adjust your point of aim accordingly.
@@rubenwairau391 Thank-you for the reply! I agree completely with your analysis. I have two main rifles for hunting and know them, their characteristics as well as the ammunition I use is the same ammunition I have used year over year. I also agree that some time spent at a range will help out tremendously with his confidence to shoot at distance. There is nothing that will improve your ability to take a shot at distance than practice at a range. I know that my shooting would improve if I was loading my own cartridges but, I just don't have the room in my house to set up all the equipment needed to custom load my own ammo. That said, like many hunters I do try and shoot at least a couple times a month either at the Gun Range or plinking with my .22 so that my shooting skills stay somewhat sharp.
Ollie, the country there is beautiful! Not much into hunting, as the animal doesn’t have much of a chance with a high powered rifle. Do you eat what you kill and use the skins? I much prefer fishing videos. The mountain streams look cold and the water looks delicious.

What can I say? Unreal hunting area, tough climbing, great hunts. As a fellow hunter I can appreciate the tough hunts that lead to success. I just shot a huge black bear in Alberta Canada with my bow. Good luck the the hunters of the world.

It's definitely tough carrying a injury and putting in the big yards like that. I've been there myself it can be a mental, physical, emotional, challenge but you will never forget that trip. 💪
If that is where I think it is those tourist hunters are allowed to be landed there and the rest of us kiwi hunters are not. Hope you recorded some illegal heli activity and report it, they have to follow AATH protocol yet most don't

Knee was 6 and half months post op. Felt strong as fuck, but was taking it very cautiously, mostly just a bit of swelling and stiffness after. Knee caps took the heat from all the down hill were bruised and sore for weeks

I can’t even begin to explain how absolutely amazing this seems.
I kept wowing throughout the entire video, thinking how incredible it all seems - the views, being out there for an entire week, in this wild, virgin nature, hunting for these amazing beasts, enjoying the fruits of nature, as god intended, that seems like the kind of life that I dream about, and work towards.

Yeah he's already shot some big Tahr, unless there was something massive he was happy to just be in the mountains and helping me. Good guy, that will be me in a few years helping another mate get onto their first Tahr. I don't have a problem with Helicopters dropping people in for a week hunt for example but the herd do need management and not all people are so physically capable, but the Heli Assisted hunting in absolute bullshit for sure.

Yeah bro took fair few of those but just went over board on the food. We actually ended up chewing though most of it plus some fresh kill in the hills. I like to eat haha

Looks to make like they lived up there in peace and nature balancing itself out. As I stated, Those animals are introduced species and have no natural predators, so unless humans keep the herd numbers in check the whole eco system here is affected (in a bad way). It's not an excuse, it is facts. I encourage you to read about about introduced species in New Zealand and improve your knowledge on the matter. It seems you are still confused. Hard for some people to grasp but there are times on earth when certain species need to be kept in check. And why does one life form have more meaning for you than others? How about the millions of rodents, birds, and other creatures that get massacred in mass crop and vegetable production?? I can go on and on. Educate yourself

For both. Carried what I could out. Would be a different story if we were getting flown out by chopper. If numbers aren’t controlled by recreational hunters then the government agencies send in helicopters and they get shot by the thousands and left on hills for total wastage. Look up history of Tahr in. NZ (introduced species)

So you take the head and maybe a bit of meat but leave the majority of it behind? Or did someone come and collect it, I'm confused. And then you kill a second and third one before you've managed to capture the whole of the first, or did you? I'm pretty confused here. Like why kill something massive just for a small bit and pitch/leave the rest? For views I guess, that's the real motivation behind these kills, not the meat the animal serves but the views turns into money which you can use to buy other meat yourself? It's hard for me to wrap my head around what exactly is going on here motivation-wise. If you want to eat good, why not do more spear fishing, seems like you can take the whole thing away at once and use its energy to the full potential. This just seems wasteful, but again, you're getting ad revenue so maybe it's just more popular and you're able to leave the corpse to decay and purchase meat with money you made from the video instead? I guess a wagon/rope setup to get the animal out wouldn't get as much views and overall you get less meat from killing in that way since you make money for 'trophy-style' content, like measuring the horns and leave the majority of the good meat behind to decay? Or maybe you did get the whole animal out with time, I really can't tell. No judgement, just trying to understand what motivates you to do this and why you don't feel it's necessary to be able to get the whole animal out in order to take the shot in the first place (or again maybe you did and I missed it, or maybe someone else did and it just wasn't in the video). I guess I'm partial to that way of thinking where civilizations would kill animals but use every part of it to its full potential so that the animal serves as much a purpose as it possibly can. Now again, maybe the best way to convert this animal is to do a trophy style kill because views increase in the algorithm and equate to more value to you, I really don't know, and that's why I'm posting, to try to understand what goes on in your mind and whether you want to do things differently next time or if this is what you think is indeed best. I would think having a wagon and rope setup to get the animal out would be technical and interesting in such terrain, but again, maybe you've tried that before and it gets a lot less views or something, like, there could be other factors that affect all of that which I would be curious to hear more about from you or others with experience in the intersection of hunting and social media. My first thought would be that if you weren't prepared to get the animal out then you shouldn't kill it, but then you wouldn't get as many views on social media nor would you get those tiny morsels of meat you are looking forward to. But still, something seems off about it to me, that doesn't mean it's wrong. I'd just like to know more about your philosophy around this - I assume you've thought about these things extensively. Like seeing you kill these massive animals and then eating ultra processed food out of a bag was overall confusing from a narrative point of view.

@@TimAndersonOfficial but many thar hunters also protested at the notion of doc eradicating the thar. Surely the motivation therefore is sport, not assisting in pest control?
@@AH-wn6dw Oh, it's definitely sport. I'm just saying that hunters have a role in pest control too. There's lots of factors involved.
