I think her appearance is exactly what created the shock and edged her performance into everyone's subconscious. All songs that've ever won the Eurovision had something special about them. But that doesn't mean she didn't deserve to win. I think it was by far one of the most dramatic performances of this year's Eurovision and showed a lot of talent and emotion (I was rooting for Switzerland all night long, but I'm still very happy she won). If it would have been an ex-convict, druggie and alcoholic, no one would've pointed the finger and laughed, because people can relate to weakness more than they do to finer qualities. Everyone just calm down... this is merely a song contest. Relax. I don't find the appearance of this person is normal nor usual in the slightest, but this is a singing competition, and I personally choose not to be distracted by her looks. I genuinely believe this song and her performance of it was one of the best, and apparently Europe seems to agree with me, that's why so many Europeans (and some Asians) voted for this performance. I find the constant discussions about the perceived "politics" of this performance in Eurovision quite irrelevant to be frank. The ones who believe this performer won because of a political agenda have a lot of EVIDENCE to provide before they delve into unsubstantiated theories. This person is "intersex". A condition in which one's 'gender' doesn't match their 'sex' (sex and gender are distinct things apparently). Sex is defined by "sex chromosomes" such as "XX", "XY", "XXY", etc; while gender is somewhat more fluid than this according to specialists. I have learned about the existence of "intersex" people a couple of months ago myself. There are some informative documentaries available on RUclips about these people, in case you would like to learn more.

If gender and sex do not align that condition is called "transgender" (e.g. a biological man that identifies as a woman is called transgender woman and sometimes undergoes medical procedures to get a more feminine body) Intersex is if the the biological aspects are ambiguous. I live in the U.S. and I never even heard of this Eurovision contest until I saw an announcement on my local news show this morning. They said that, "Conchita Wurst was the winner of the Eurovision singing contest and that she was a drag queen". I just had to see what all the fuss was about but, in the end, I just wanted to hear her voice and see what made her beat every other contestant to win this show. Well, I just saw this video, the only video I've seen from the show. I really think I am unbiased here since I have no background whatsoever with this show. After listening to Conchita sing, I have to say that I thought her voice was very good but not particularly great. With that said, I can't knock anyone, especially Conchita. I doubt being a drag queen is easy and I am sure she has experienced plenty of hard knocks along her road to success. I hope she will be humble, take this win, and be able to turn it into a real career for herself. We all deserve to make a living. Congratulations.

I think her appearance is exactly what created the shock and edged her performance into everyone's subconscious. All songs that've ever won the Eurovision had something special about them. But that doesn't mean she didn't deserve to win. I think it was by far one of the most dramatic performances of this year's Eurovision and showed a lot of talent and emotion (I was rooting for Switzerland all night long, but I'm still very happy she won). If it would have been an ex-convict, druggie and alcoholic, no one would've pointed the finger and laughed, because people can relate to weakness more than they do to finer qualities. But no, she found happiness in expressing herself the way she feels and it's our duty as the miserable, sad world we are, to bring her down... Pathetic...

I don't find the appearance of this person is normal nor usual in the slightest, but this is a singing competition, and I personally choose not to be distracted by her looks.
I genuinely believe this song and her performance of it was one of the best, and apparently Europe seems to agree with me, that's why so many Europeans (and some Asians) voted for this performance.
I find the constant discussions about the perceived "politics" of this performance in Eurovision quite irrelevant to be frank. The ones who believe this performer won because of a political agenda have a lot of EVIDENCE to provide before they delve into unsubstantiated theories.
This person is "intersex". A condition in which one's 'gender' doesn't match their 'sex' (sex and gender are distinct things apparently). Sex is defined by "sex chromosomes" such as "XX", "XY", "XXY", etc; while gender is somewhat more fluid than this according to specialists.
I have learned about the existence of "intersex" people a couple of months ago myself. There are some informative documentaries available on RUclips about these people, in case you would like to learn more.

Conchita Wurst is a drag queen, in everyday life they are a normal guy called Tom Neuwirth.
If gender and sex do not align that condition is called "transgender" (e.g. a biological man that identifies as a woman is called transgender woman and sometimes undergoes medical procedures to get a more feminine body)
Intersex is if the the biological aspects are ambiguous. Like XXY chromosones or genitalia that look half female - half male.
Conchita Wurst is not transgender, and (as far as i know) not intersex.

I live in the U.S. and I never even heard of this Eurovision contest until I saw an announcement on my local news show this morning. They said that, "Conchita Wurst was the winner of the Eurovision singing contest and that she was a drag queen". I just had to see what all the fuss was about but, in the end, I just wanted to hear her voice and see what made her beat every other contestant to win this show. Well, I just saw this video, the only video I've seen from the show. I really think I am unbiased here since I have no background whatsoever with this show. After listening to Conchita sing, I have to say that I thought her voice was very good but not particularly great. With that said, I can't knock anyone, especially Conchita. I doubt being a drag queen is easy and I am sure she has experienced plenty of hard knocks along her road to success. I hope she will be humble, take this win, and be able to turn it into a real career for herself. We all deserve to make a living. Congratulations.
