    For your first short film.. wow, you have no idea how good this is especially considering it's your first short. You have an incredible natural talent and it's only a testament to your mentor as well, you, and the cast and crew should be proud of this achievement!

      Incredible video! I recently made my first short film as well. I'm 15 and would REALLY appreciate anyone who could give me feedback on it. ruclips.net/video/O6-Vl1QzaBI/видео.html. I filmed it entirely on the DJI Mavic Air 2 so the quality and focus isn't great. I know I'm lacking sound design as well.

    Couple constructive criticisms:
    1) I thought the entire film was extremely slow paced. You have to keep in mind audience retention and I lost interest very early on because not much was happening. Mostly just landscape shots of a guy walking around.
    2) Narration is definitely something you need to work on for sure. How a story is told is a big part of enjoying a film. Leaving the most important information (the main objective of the MC) to the ending and not informing the audience in the beginning (so the audience has something to look forward to) isn’t the best decision (imo).
    3) Keep the characters direction in mind. This shot right here 8:37 completely took me out. The main character was at the right side, and the antagonist was at the left, then all of a sudden there’s this quick cut panning the opposite way and idk who’s who.
    4) Some of the acting wasn’t good. They kinda felt goofy at times. When the MC fell in the desert, it looked like he was forcing a fall, rather than falling naturally. And the fall was kinda goofy. If a take doesn’t look right to you, you gotta retake it. The smallest acting flaws take people out (at least me).
    5) I’d make the flashbacks different to the present time. How you’d like to do that is completely up to you. And faster cuts too. I thought it was too slow. I felt like it was missing something. Maybe add more close up face shots to emphasize on the characters feelings.
    6) I thought this shot was kinda weird 0:19. Looked unnatural and strange. It looks like he knows it’s not going to rain anymore. When you have rain, you take it for granted. If it was the future MC going back to the past, then he’d perhaps be thankful for the rain, but if that was his past self, I’d probably just make a short and quick montage of him enjoying himself in the rain or something. Rather than him just standing there knowing that that’ll probably be his last rain experience. (If that was your intent, then sure)
    All these are constructive criticisms. No hate. Film making is something I’m passionate about too and I understand how important constructive criticism is to help me grow.
    This being your first film, it’s not too bad. Mine was worst haha. I also understand budget, and keeping actors and dialogues to a minimum. Having good gear and editing knowledge is something I didn’t have at the time, so you nailed those parts. I’d say just work on the narration part.

      I would want to see some of your work.......(short films) to see where you get your POV from. Its irritating when people speak on what they think is wrong without addressing what was done correctly....but I would love to see your work and this is not constructive at all.

    • @jollyarts
      @jollyarts 3 года назад

      @@KevinBrown-fp9pj Why is it irritating? If it was me, I’d love to hear back as much feedback as possible. Even the creator himself said he has a lot to improve on. And the difference between him and I is that he has everything he needs to make a film: gear, crew, editing and filming experience…whereas I don’t have the resources or opportunities to make a decent film. All I can do is point out on things I think needs some improvement on projects I can’t make myself.

    • @jollyarts
      @jollyarts 3 года назад +2

      @@KevinBrown-fp9pj and how does addressing what he did right gonna help improve? If you want just straight up complements, you show it to your family and friends. They’ll tell you it’s good. I’m not saying that you should completely bring down the creator, cause he obviously did a decent job and making a film is no easy work, but giving complements just for the sake of giving complements doesn’t help anyone.

    • @BP-qi3dt
      @BP-qi3dt 3 года назад +1

      @@KevinBrown-fp9pj It’s pretty clear @JollyArts introduced some positive feedback. He also included comments with reason why. I would have to agree with a lot of his direction. When you are a film maker you must be prepared for criticism. In this case it was polite and constructive.

    As a filmmaker at heart, I can say this is very impressive. Damn man, very good work! The color, editing, wardrobe and sound design is spot on, and you are on the right track for sure, this is your calling 100%. The story line is where it’s weak.. like others have written. Without any real solid experience in film making, I wouldn’t blame you for ignoring my comments but for what it’s worth here are just a few things I’d do differently. The opening scene. I didn’t get it, and it was kinda long. I would have shown a drop of water from something like a person squeezing it out of a plant (cactus), or a drip in a faucet etc. showing desperation. The people in the truck getting in were dressed way too nice for being out of water, desperate, and after a bomb went off. His bags were too nice too. Scruff em up a bit. Why was he leaving his family knowing they would be safer, what happened to the mother? and he left on his own? He would stay with his family to protect them and have a better chance. The fall down the hill looked totally fake, and he overacted it. Maybe you could’ve shot that a few times with different views i.e. closeup very shakey shot to show more realism (think car crash scene where it rolls over a hill etc). The ending where he sees his little girl, you should have had him scream her name, long and possibly slow motion but have it sound muffled like when your ears ring, (think of Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan in the beginning) then had her look up and smile, then cut to black… It was drawn out too long and him waving was def weird to me. It feels that it was shot at different times and he wasn’t even there with her. Her turning around make it seem like she’s leaving and not going toward him even though she would have to turn around, because of where she is, it just looks off. Building better story behind the main character is necessary too.. Overall, you are certainly a diamond in the "somewhat" rough director and have more shine than most for being your first short film. Very good and congratulations on making it happen, you’ve done way more than I ever could. Keep up the great work. I cant wait to see your next one..!

    Absolutely brilliant. I am a father myself and this short resonated with me. It was that conflict of trying to maintain morals but will do anything to survive for your little girl. The only criticism is the father's reaction of seeing his little girl at the end didn't quite capture the emotion strong enough. it was a strong film the right pace love the flashbacks to his daughter through his journey but then reunion was weak.
    But amazing Job dude, lighting, sound design some compositions nicely done mate!

    Amazing!
    Awesome short film, amazing shots, acting, editing, and coloring. I'm not claiming to be any good at film making, but I absolutely love taking notes and picking apart movies on what sticks out to me or what I would do different. You made this way better than I could have ever dreamed, so please take these notes as constructive criticism.
    0:01 Opening scene looked like a digital zoom out in post, since there was no parallaxing with the trees and the sun flare wasn't moving. This stuck out since the tree on the right is so close to the camera, there should have been parallaxing happening when zooming out. Since there were none, it appears to be more of a digital zoom out which setup my judgement for the rest of the film (too hard to film on location, just do it in post).
    0:18 2nd scene, the rain. A little more of an obvious error, but the rain is falling from the corner, not straight down. It was probably too hard to get the rain to fall from a higher source, so I'd zoom in tighter so it wasn’t as noticeable. Also, that scene would have been better if the rain were lit from the back. I know you have a light on camera right cause you are trying to make it look like that streetlight is creating the light on the face, but since that pole is lit up as well, it looks funny. I would have added a back light for the rain, then zoomed in closer to his face so you could not see the misdirection of rain falling and the un-even rain pattern on his shirt.
    0:32 Very dark rock on left right next to bright spot from sun in middle, and then the guy is in the dark. This scene seemed too extreme (lights and darks) and when he woke up, I felt that could have been better. Maybe if he woke up from the light coming through two branches, or so the sun, when rising, hits his eyes causing his to wake up.
    0:38 The tree on the upper left seems overpowering. Maybe back up and zoom in more to get less of that branch. Also, the Jansport logo on the bag. Id remove or cover it.
    0:56 It sounds like the FM channel is being dialed in and tuned but his finger isn’t moving the moving dial at all.
    1:26 You could have used the other side of the paper (the previous journal entry) to have other words or bullet points visible to help setup some more back story. Maybe like a countdown for how much food is remaining, or water, etc.
    2:07 That over exposed background was a shock to see compared to the previous scene. Had that shot been filmed in the morning or sunset, or overcast, would have helped. The focus pulling when they were walking from the house towards the truck was all over the place. Maybe some pre-determined marks for the focus puller. But I understand on a limited size team. On faster moving shots that can't be focus pulled correctly, I'd rather see an in focus higher depth of field than a blurry subject with a soft subject. Then after they're done walking, switch back to wide aperture for the blurry background.
    2:26 There were 4 people IN the back of the truck helping move those few pieces of luggage. A little overkill, not realistic. The guy in the background also loaded that red cooler twice.
    4:45 Maybe another take of him falling since his trip looked fake, and when he landed, it looked like he purposely flipped over more to roll down the hill. Even just using another tighter angle so you can't see when he rolls over to continue down the hill. Also, he sure did seem to get really upset over rolling down a soft sand hill. It would have fit the story better if his canteen opened and spilled some of his water because of the fall. That would give a better reason to be upset, and it would have helped setup the background story on how water is so valuable.
    Other things I noticed was their clean shaved facial hair. Maybe even a 5 o’clock shadow or a little scruff.
    I couldn't do this any better and I critique my own stuff all the time.

    Good colour grade. Most of the shots have good compositions, with interesting elements and motifs. Good sound design and music. Editing is relevant. Impressive makeup, costume and production design. Performances are also effective for relatively small character sketches given to the actors. The film is an overall technical achievement but that's where it stops. The story is mediocre, with one dimensional narration and dialogue. Usually a short film story would have a strong USP and I thought it would lie in the post-apocalyptic aspect of this film but I couldn't find it. (example of this would be Lorne, starring Guy Pearce) Plotline and Character development is minimal/null for a 14 minute screen-time. Obstacles faced by the character are introduced right in the start with no change from that point except that of the lead falling down the hill or someone desperately wanting water. Pacing of the shots and the blocking and staging is uneventful and slow. Overall story, character creation and direction is mediocre. But the film has evident technical prowess so kudos to the cinematography and sound design. For a first time short film, amazing execution. Just try to work on a more creative or thought-provoking script next time. Cheers. 🍺

    Incredible cinematography and I liked the way the story switched back and forth in time. I was able to follow well. My only negative I could recall was sometimes the acting or actions weren't believable and I see this as a directing flaw. For example, when he fell down the sand hill, the trip or misstep did not seem real or truly motivated by an actual trip. A simple reshoot of the shot and a redirection of the talent to make it more convincing would've kept me in the film for that scene, instead it took me out of it. There were a few other instances but I don't want that to distract from how well made this short was. I am extremely proud to be part of the FTF community and look forward to more of your short film work.

    Who gave it a thumbs down!? What great first film, you can see a lot of work and effort had gone into it and it's payed off, every film you make you learn something new and you just improve, I'm looking forward to the next one, watching this today has been inspiring. 👍😊

    woah, this is very nicely done! I really love the colors you achieved in this, and the sound design is spectacular. I did notice something that looks like an oversight in the scenes cut by the fire when the protagonist and antagonist meet. The over the shoulder shot right after the antagonist says "I thought you might could use some company." at 5:38. I was able to tell that the antagonist was talking, despite there being no dialogue. I like the way you cut that scene to give that kind of awkward silence to show the hesitation to trust him, but I was immediately able to tell that the cut was a different take of the same scene from a different angle.
