- A man discovers a mermaid washed up on the shore -- and puts her in his bathtub.
BATHTUB BY THE SEA is used with permission from Ole-Andre Ronneberg. Learn more at gullskrinet.no.
Gunnar lives a quiet life by the sea. He works at the lighthouse, where he lives. And his routine is very simple and solitary: he wakes up, eats breakfast, tends to the lighthouse and occasionally takes a bath in a tub overlooking the ocean. Each day passes, marked off carefully on a calendar in his living quarters.
But Gunnar's routine is disrupted when an injured mermaid washes up on the shore after high tide one day. He tends to the mermaid's tail, letting her keep wet in his bathtub. But on his bath day, he deposits her back into the sea. But he soon discovers he misses her presence, though he may have lost her for good.
Written and directed by Ole-Andre Ronneberg, this lovely short fantasy-drama captures the tension between sticking with what we know and breaking out of our routines. Gunnar's life is profoundly pared-down and quiet, and the first few minutes of the film capture the silences, rituals and horizons of his world. Life at the lighthouse is gorgeous and full of natural beauty, with its clear gorgeous light, horizons of sky and sea and voluptuous banks of clouds, all rendered in exquisite cinematography and editing that luxuriates in the small moments of Gunnar's life. But it's also very lonely, and Gunnar has no one to talk to or even be around.
Gunnar's life changes when a mermaid washes up on the shore. She's in pain from an injured tail, and Gunnar rushes to get her to his bathtub. He tends to her tail and feeds her, and even spends companionable silence with her. The progression of their companionship is charted with the same even, contemplative pace as much of Gunnar's life, with a certain matter-of-fact charm.
The old, ramshackle lighthouse-keeper and the lovely young mermaid -- played by actors Viggo Solum and Anne Cecilie Ukkelberg with an understated naturalism -- make for a sweetly unlikely pair, but they also come to represent the comfort and joy of companionship and an almost primal desire for togetherness. That togetherness, though, is disrupted by Gunnar's insistence on keeping to the ritualized routine he's developed during his tenure at the lighthouse.
Much of BATHTUB BY THE SEA is silent, as fitting to such a taciturn character and beautifully desolate setting. But it is rich with a quiet sort of magic and enchantment, with a feeling for how the natural environment shapes experience and emotion. But nothing lasts forever, and even nature itself is in constant flux and evolution. The story ends when Gunnar receives some news that will change his life forever, but the conclusion for both Gunnar and the viewer has a sense of hope and possibility. Things change and routines must adapt, after all, but friendship and devotion are the constants that make it all bearable. - Кино
Hi everybody, I am Ole-André Rønneberg, the creator of this movie. Thank you all for all your nice comments on the film! I am so glad that many of you liked it. It was a challenge to make the film, but I am very happy about how it turned out. I will stop by occasionally and answer questions about the film.:-) I hope that everybody is staying safe during this time, where we all have been on our own desolated islands.
Thank you for this wonderful work of art! It’s deep in its seeming simplicity, and the composition is impeccable
@@elinasarakaeva4742 Thank you! I am very glad that it resonates in you. I wish you a wonderful day!
@@ole-andrernneberg745 I thoroughly enjoyed your film. I loved its simplicity and innocence. From what the film reveals I don't see a happy ending for him, so I will take some liberty and imagine a twist ... that allows him to continue their friendship and his lifestyle.
@@RPRosen-ki2fk It is always painful to leave something behind that has been dear to one. Like a lighthouse, and a routine that has grown into ones spine.
Very effective short tale. Kudos!
The guy acts like he finds stranded mermaids every day. Good story.

As a former Navy man, I loved this tale! The ending was perfect.
It partly reminded me of the saying "If you have something, set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If it doesn't it never was."
Thank you. I really likes the saying. It is much wisdom in those words.
I loved this tale, too...as a former mermaid! ⚓ 🧜♀️

Being a lighthouse keeper and having a mermaid for a friend is my all time dream. Loved the movie, wish it could have gone longer.
wanted to live in a lighthouse from being a really young child. dont know why. I still do.
this was beautifully made. no sexually undertones, peaceful music and left Us with so many questions and leaving Us to fill in the blanks and using our own imagination.

Thank you! I am very glad that you liked the film. The things we do tells often more than the things we say.
it's very scandinavian isnt it
@@elizabethbennet4791 Yes, indeed.
Note to self: Mermaids like apples. Just in case, you know. Also, deploy bathtub by the sea. Make that two. If evicted, don't worry. The sea is far more vast than any lighthouse. She welcomes you to her home. Love happens, even if only unusually.
Aww, that is really nice. i thought they were sweet potatoes, not apples :D Not sure though, as I 've never met a mermaid myself ;)
I have spent some time living on a remote island, sometimes, late at night, I swear I have heard mermaids singing. I wish I was back there again.

The low brass background music was the perfect choice for this
Anyone know the piece name? Beyond beautiful
Especially at the end, when you're wondering what next, the music stops you from feeling despondent about his situation.
Agreed.
Yes agree
Like a lighthouse foghorn
A mermaid found a swimming lad
Picked him up for her own
Pressed her body to his body
Laughed; and plunging down
Forgot in cruel happiness
That even lovers drown.

I feel like this movie is trying to tell us to step out of our comfort zones. In an attempt to keep to his familiar daily routine, the man almost lost something precious.
Spot on!
Everyone else understands and I don’t have a clue what it means. Or what the mermaid represents. But it was relatable in some ways and I liked it.
He’s alone, existing in his comfort zone but without purpose, and has been putting off the inevitable, changing and leaving into the great unknown.
The mermaid is the catalyst for change. An unexpected guest comes into his life needing help and he takes the opportunity to help. Later he is rewarded for his actions by getting helped during his time of need.
Now he won’t have to go into the unknown alone but has someone to help guide him.
Is it possible that you are trying too hard to find some deep, hidden meaning in it that just isn't there?
Sometimes a story is just a story.

easier said than done
This film is so good. Everything comes together so well: the score, the cinematography, the acting that is so understatedly expressive, the limited dialogue. I see I left a comment a year ago, and it's still seems just as good or better.
When I first met my husband, he was living in a lighthouse.
Oooh :) How was that?
Are you also a mermaid?
A relative of mine from the 18th century lived in a lighthouse, too.
When I first met a lighthouse I was living in your husband.
I loved this film...the abstract space it leaves gives viewers open ground to ponder on various lines... The peace in this movie makes me wish I could live this man's life...simple yet beautiful
Photography was amazing! The twist that the lighthouse was automatic is very nice
THIS NEEDS TO BE A FULL-LENGTH FEATURE FILM...I LOVED THE SIMPLICITY AND YET VAST IMAGINATION FOR US VIEWERS.

Film is a visual art. This is proof that you don't need dialogue to tell a story.
Love that the mermaid got yeeted because the old guy needed a bath 😂 this film is gorgeous and so sweet. My heart broke when the lighthouse was automatically on. Where did they go in the end?

I thought exactly the same thing, used to love that show!
This is a magical story that resonates with me very deeply, most likely because I'm facing a major life transition of my own in which I feel quite alone but, in the process, I feel I've come upon my own version of a mermaid who's needed my help as much as I've needed hers; we're together and help one another. Thank you for producing the film. I absolutely love it.
Hardly a word was spoken as dialogue yet the plot and action were perfectly understood. A somewhat "fishy" tale nicely portrayed!!!
How wonderful is THIS. An old man's reverie! Thank you for the inspiration.
I very rarely comment on the movies I watch here; however, will make an exception here. This was, without a doubt, one of the finest I've seen on Omletto (or any other site) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A totally class story, well written and easily understood. It was an all around excellent presentation by the entire staff, as well as outstanding performances by the actor and actress. I'd like to thank you for allowing viewers the pleasure of watching it here.
Thank you so much! The film was a slow birth, but it was truly worth the wait. I am so glad that you liked it. The crew were exceptional, the surroundings, the setting, it all came to place.=)
Yes, I loved this story! Thank you! The actors were outstanding and the setting so beautiful. I imagined a happy ending for both: together forever: she went back into the sea; he went back to his home: the lighthouse: she could visit anytime and they could be
best friends forever: no more loneliness for either of them.❤️
I liked the way he towed his new mermaid friend in her bathtub behind his boat, so sweet. I hope they are both still happy together. ❤❤❤
Ii
Ole-Andre, really excellent film. Thanks very much for making it for us to watch.
I think it's a film you need to watch a few times, it's seemingly sparse on the surface, but there are many things hidden in it that I think I missed the first time.
What I see as a big message from the film is that although the Lightkeeper keeps to quite a rigid routine, he takes it in step when the Mermaid is washed up. Loads her into his barrow and puts her in his bathtub. I mean what else....:-}
And then when ALL of his structure is swept away, he accepts gracefully and stoically her proposal. And just as any good Western, we see them riding....er rowing....off into the sunset.
And to those of us in a much more populated landscape, to whom his seems desolate and lonely, well, need to re-think that. Lonely perhaps, but beautiful. He lives in a truly beautiful setting, and not polluted by the noise of others.
There's a good story that's related. A very rich businessman is driving on a country road in Natal (South Africa) and his car breaks down. He walks to the nearby litle village, and finds some men sitting under a tree, smoking and drinking beer. They invite him to sit down, and share a beer with them. He asks for help, and they offer to pull his car with their oxen to a place to be fixed. But when they seem slow to act, he gets excited and impatient. And he says he is in a big rush, because he needs to get to his rented vacation home.....where he will be able to sit in his chair, and drink a beer.....
He asks them why don't they make some effort, and and raise some extra pigs and goats to sell, to make more money? He says otherwise you will stay as you are, without any money. Then when you are older, you can retire!
And they look at him, and say what will we DO when we retire? Well, he says, you can sit under a nice shady tree and drink beer!
Lol...nice!
@WarthogARJ You are most welcome. Thank you for watching it:-) I love your thoughts about the subject, the film, and your little story.:-)
Have a wonderful day!
I turned off my VPN just to be able to leave a comment. The music *perfectly* complements the story here. So spare, so meandering and thoughtful, hopeful yet sad. To the composer and the filmmaker, bravo!
This exact thing happened to me when I was a lighthouse keeper. The only difference was my mermaid had a human body and legs. Proof that life does imitate art. Or would it be the other way around? I’m confused
So she had a fish head?
That was oddly good. I found myself needing to know where they were going. Great job

Thank-you all a gazillion times !
He couldn't leave my routine and drudgery for the fear of going into the unknown , a world full of uncertainties. He preferred being tied to the lighthouse for it is the only certainty he felt he could clutch on to. Then he found his mermaid (purpose). At first he avoided her existence , tried to push her away. She kept coming back to find him , even though he tried his best not to heed her existence.
-I hope I find my mermaid and I wish everyone finds his/her mermaid.
We all need a mermaid to help us to fulfill our purpose. And I believe you will. Have a nice day, Amiya.:-)
This was such a beautiful short film! It presented a majestic and peaceful atmosphere. The landscape, body of water and the sky were breathtaking! I cannot even imagine what it must have felt like for the lighthouse employee to have his job terminated because of technology! Technology is a blessing but in the blink of an eye you can wake up and your job is gone. I was thinking that the lighthouse employee would make a nice mate/companion. I appreciate how he dressed, had a routine and cared for the facility! I would be in awe to wake up to see such a magnificent view! The man and the mermaid were a blessing to one another. I loved the silence, it was captivating!
Thank you for this wonderful comment.:-) Yes, when we shot the film, we got up in the morning, and we couldn't wait to get back to the island. And I guess it must be wonderful to be there. I think it must be both fantastic and horrible to be these light house keepers, because they were risking a lot to keep people safe. It could be a mentally and physically hard to work on these light houses because of the isolation. The last one became automatic in 2006.
Beautiful and whimsical and fun!
I really liked this one..... Saving to my playlist 🙂
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful piece of artwork! The man's life reminds of my life...with my cat. Sometimes I feel we're the only living creatures on earth due to continued remote working and social distancing, and my kitty is all I have in life. It's a mixed emotion of happiness and loneliness.
Hang in there. We are all in the same boat. Norway, where I live, has shut down totally with social distancing again. It was hard.
I hope, when things is getting back to normal, when ever that will be, that we can celebrate what people have in common, and not look so much at the differences. And find courage to get back to each other, as human beings.
I wish you a wonderful Christmas, Moonie The Pretty Giant (if you celebrate Christmas).
