The album was pillared at the time, as the media wanted an album like Abbey Road.
Instead they got a very different album which has got better as the decades have gone by.
It’s a magnificent album for the time, with nothing like it, as it was (and is) very different.
Genius is overrated normally, but with Macca, it’s standard.
It gets even better with his next album Ram, which now has been credited as the first ever Indy album.

@@martinmorris5997 Ram is great and is close (not quite) at the level of Lennon and Harrison's first albums. This one though? Its ok. Nothing wrong with it, but most of it doesn't tap into Maccartney's full potential.

McCartney’s solo catalog is so vast and varied at this point, which makes this starting point in his solo journey even more fascinating. It was the beginning of rebuilding his confidence before conquering the pop world once again in the 70s. Still one of my favorites. It is so pure and quintessentially McCartney.

I do love how Paul was so proud of Junk, and so sure it would someday become some sort of standard, that he recorded two different instrumental backing tracks, and just put both on the album, only recording vocals for the one he thought sounded better with his voice. I hope that it starts to get some more love over time, because it is my idea of Paul McCartney whimsy at its most heartwarming.

A couple remarks about "Maybe I'm Amazed". 1. The live version (from the Wings Over America 1976 tour) is really good, and having a band adds a level of depth that this version lacks (IMHO). The live version was released as a single (I bought the 45 back in the day!). 2. The recent Get Back documentary included the Beatles recording this song. What a shame they never finished/released it!

This album came out the week before the last Beatles album “Let It Be” was released. Paul McCartney made an agreement with the other Beatles that he wouldn’t release any singles from this album so “Let It Be” could sell better. So if Paul would’ve refused, he could’ve have had the song “Let It Be”, “The Long and Winding Road”, and “Maybe I’m Amazed” all as singles basically at the same time. I’m convinced “Maybe I’m Amazed” would’ve been a number one hit, just like the other two.

Hi Crystal! Happy Friday! Side 2 of this album is packed with goodness. Definitely more rock than Side 1. “Singalong Junk” gets to me, too. It’s so beautiful. Then, “Maybe I’m Amazed”. I think this is Paul’s first great song as a solo artist. And, all of his former Beatle band mates praised it.
At the time he recorded this album, The Beatles were still a band. However, the writing was on the wall and Paul was the one who released this album then announced he was leaving The Beatles. Something which really pissed off the others, but John was actually admiring of it because Paul used the album to announce his leaving the band and John didn’t get to do it first.
The Beatles breakup hit all of them hard especially Paul who I think was the one who most wanted to keep them together. Ringo, too, but to a lesser extent and John and George already had one foot out the door. It was like a divorce. It never happens overnight. People grow apart and these guys had been in the same band since they were teenagers. At least, John, Paul, and George.
Now, Paul had no band, but he had Linda who sang backing vocals on this album. Crystal, you’ve heard “Ram” the next album he did with Linda and that album gave him the confidence to start a band, Wings. Paul started from scratch and they struggled early on, but within a few years they were a big success and by the end of the decade he was the most successful of all of the Beatles.
Which album will you be doing next? I would love for you to do “Double Fantasy” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It’s a bittersweet album because it’s the last album John did while he was alive and his songs are so personal and they show how much he evolved from his first album. You’ll need to have some Kleenex on you. But I know you’ll love it.
    🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏

Crystal, it's so wonderful to see you again! In the words of a Billy Crystal character, you look mawvelous!! "McCartney" is my favorite of all his post-Beatles albums, the simplicity of the recording - just he, with Linda here & there - places it above all his others. Many unfinished ideas are here, some of them sort-of smoothed out, several of them originally brought to the Beatles - "Junk" & "Teddy Boy" come to mind - and the very ending to "Hot As Sun" is a clip from a song called "Suicide", possibly from 1968 (I could be wrong about that). "Glass" has the strange sounds heard from rubbing vinegar-lubricated fingers on rims of glasses filled with different levels of liquid. "Maybe I'm Amazed" was the hit, and (I think) "Every Night" to a lesser degree.
If you haven't seen "Get Back", there's a great part where Paul brings "Teddy Boy" to the Beatles, and John Lennon immediately doesn't like it, mocking along with the chorus and adding "take your partner, do-si-do" in the instrumental part. I'm sure the clip is here on YT somewhere. The audio of it will suffice.
That's all I wanted to jabber about - hope to see you back soon!

As a sidenote, I think McCartney II should be your next album by him. Its also homemade, but at the same time a completely DIFFERENT album than this one
Its Pauls new wave album. Very innovative and ahead of its time. Also the song Coming Up from that album inspired John Lennon to get out of retirement in 1980 and make music again. As he felt it was the best thing that Paul had done in a while. And he always had a friendly competition with Paul when it came to songwriting. Too bad he didn't have the chance to do it much longer after that.

I think John was getting the itch to record again prior to this. He was still writing songs and recording demos. I think it was also hearing “Rock Lobster” and how it sounded similar to the stuff he and Yoko did a decade earlier which gave him inspiration. He also went sailing in Bermuda where he got swept in a hurricane and survived it that summer. He talked about how after that everything was centered and started writing the songs that wound up on “Double Fantasy”.
Yes, there was most definitely friendly competition with Paul and shortly before he was killed, a reporter asked John if he was surprised by Paul’s success and he said no. “How can you be surprised at your brother?” John said. And he also said how much he enjoyed the album version of “Coming Up”.

This may be Paul’s best vocal ever. It’s up there with Oh! Darling and Helter Skelter imho…sorry I’m a little behind watching your reaction videos. The live version of Maybe I’m Amazed was released as a single later in the seventies. I’m of the opinion the original should of been a single in the USA back in 1970. Perhaps he didn’t want it competing with the singles from the Let it Be album.
If you haven’t watched the Get Back movie it’s great! It’s Big Brother - The Beatles Version. 😂😂😂

Thanks for the video, Crystal! Btw, Paul wrote Teddy Boy and Junk during the White Album time and early recordings of both are included with the Beatles Anthology. Regarding "Maybe I'm Amazed": it's been interesting to see how the live version from Rockshow has become more popular than the original cut and is now played more on radio stations. It was definitely a highlight for me when I saw Paul live.

This is Paul’s sketchiest moments as a creator. He took a lot of flak for what may be over-reliance on a low-fi ethic here. I honestly don’t think he was intending to put out an “indi” type of album. It just smacked of it. All the history with the lads… whatevs… everybody had an argument. I think Paul took it the hardest if you want to know my opinion. He was sorta broken at this time. Still, I think you can hear the Beatles in some of these works and in the chords. You can sense how songs got on to Beatle albums by the way they’re crafted. And if you’d ever thought “Revolution 9” was a mostly George Martin engineering feat, listen to this side again and tell ME Paul didn’t stick his fingers in.
I’m also aware “The Madcap Laughs” came out in January of 70 (“McCartney” in April). Now I’m not saying Macca was inspired by Barrett because that’s HIGHLY unlikely. They weren’t the kinds of dudes to hang out with each other and, frankly, Barrett was struggling with “human stuff.” But there are moments on this side where I openly wonder if Macca had somehow, someway heard Syd’s “Octopus.” Pretty sure it didn’t happen but wow… you wonder sometimes.
It was like, Paul had some things he left in the garage and a great song. He dusted off some of it and wrapped it around “Maybe.” One thing you can say: he loved his girl. I would rank the album a strong 6.
You sang about me again 😉❤️

Wow!!!! Thank you so much for this insight! 🧡 Although he didn’t intend for it to come across as an indie type of album it probably is one of the very best of those i’ve heard to date & it makes me a bit sad to hear about the flak he took and how hard this time of his life must’ve been! I know the world ached at the Beatles dismantling but to be personally affected by it in his every day life is a whole different animal! 🧡 Thank you for being so marvelous Paul! I am beyond grateful for you always

Teddy boy had almost become a Beatles song. And Maybe I'm amazed is probably one of the best love songs he ever wrote includings his Beatles times.
You also have to understand the background of the album a little bit. The Beatles had disbanded and that had been Paul's whole life until now. He felt abandoned and lonely. Except for Linda, who stood by him. It was like a horrid divorce preceded by a long marriage. Paul was desperate. He consumed alcohol and drugs, including heroin, and lived in solitude with his family in northern England. He knew something had to change. He recorded this album. All alone. Without team. Just him, the instruments, Linda and his head full of ideas. His creative power and his wife helped him out of the crisis. I think Paul later characterized this time by saying that Linda saved his life. Just as an aside: Linda was certainly the woman of his life, the partner you might meet once in your life and you know: now I'm complete. 🙂

This album was trashed with a capital T by the critics in 1970, but I thought it was great. I love the sound of Paul's bass on the album, and the stripped-down nature of the recording. Maybe I'm Amazed probably sounds as close to a Beatles song as anything he's done in his solo career. It could have easily fit on any of the later Fabs albums.

There's a class of people who gush about the genius of John Lennon, and they deride McCartney
McCartney's first solo album was no less raw than Lennon's first solo album. And Lennon's was less approachable and negative where he goes on about not believing in God, or giving up on his mother.... etc.

Yeah, listening to this album again, it’s disappointing. There was a guy called Emitt Rhodes who made an album and I believe was likened to Paul McCartney. Unfortunately he got screwed around but his self titled album is exactly what McCartney should of done. Again, “Every Night”, “Junk” and “Maybe I’m Amazed” are the only top tier songs, but boy are they top tier. I would love for you to react to:
Wings - Red Rose Speedway or
    The Beach Boys - Sunflower
I think you’ll really enjoy both albums. Great reaction as always, and glad to see you back

McCartney is a brilliant songwriter, but his 1st solo effort is not a great album. Mostly the tunes are just song snippets, or demo versions, of compositionally incomplete songs. There are only occasional sparks of excellence. In my opinion there are only 2 decent songs that are fully conceived: obviously "Maybe I'm Amazed" (that is alone in actually sounds fully developed, performed, and produced), and "Junk" that is a very sublime song. The rest are just Paul noodling away in his home studio. Paul needed a good record producer, and probably more material to have constructed a better album.
