As a 68 year old man, there isn't much that makes me more joyful than to watch in real time as my beloved Beatles reach out and work their magic on a beautiful young soul such as yours! Their music has been healing and sustaining me since the age of 11 and I know without a doubt their music will do the same for you - we can already see it happening! Please do not feel that you must apologize for anything you may feel while listening - it's part of what makes your reactions so wonderfully genuine! I feel greatly honored that you are willing to share all of this with me and the rest of us. My heart goes out to you on your great loss. There is no timetable one must follow when it comes to this, so be kind to yourself as well as patient.
I still remember the first time I heard “Free As A Bird” on “The Beatles Anthology” and cried my eyes out. I must have watched that video and listened to the song at least 10 times that night.

On the "Ballad of John and Yoko" you've said 'We've got to hand it to Ringo" Actually the drums are played by Paul. Neither George nor Ringo play here. Paul was living right next to the studio, John appeared with a guitar at his home one day out of the blue and wanted to record the song as soon as possible. John is singing and plays acoustic guitar. The electric guitar, the bass, piano and drums is Paul. The song is recorded the same day. Other songs where Paul plays drums are Back in the USSR and Dear Prudence from the white album. I bet you're gonna hear those 3 with different ears from now on :)
Yep. George and Ringo were both out of the country at the time on other business, but John didn't want to wait to record this song, so he recruited Paul and the two of them got the whole thing done in just a few hours. John played all the guitars and Paul played bass, piano, and drums.
In one of the out takes John says to Paul, "Thanks Ringo." And Paul quickly quipps. "Thanks George."

Also the "funny stories" are all true.
OK - the basic story is correct but some of the details are wrong, in both this post and in its replies. Yes it is Paul on the drums on 'Ballad of J&Y'. Paul also plays bass, piano, maracas, and of course sings the harmony vocal, but he does NOT play guitar on the track. There are three guitars on the track (one acoustic and two electric) and John plays all three of them. Paul didn't live "right next to the studio" though he did live within a fairly short walking distance. George and Ringo were NOT both out of the country during the session. Ringo was filming his role in 'The Magic Christian' at the time (in England - not "out of the country"). And no they didn't say to each other "thanks Ringo" and "thanks George". John said (what sounds like) "Go a bit faster Ringo" in between takes when they were recording the basic track (of acoustic guitar and drums) to which Paul replies "OK George". This can be heard on the Abbey Road boxset from a couple years ago (as well as being mentioned in the 'Complete Beatles Recording Sessions' book that came out sometime in the mid-late 1980s).
@@ronaldtdump2156 Paul lived in Cavendish Avenue, he was literally 2 streets away from Abbey Road. Which google informs me is a 7 minute walk.
"Rain" is considered by many, including Ringo himself, as Ringo's best drumming performance. Paul's bass playing was revolutionary for the time.

@phillydisco : I think some instruments were recorded at a higher speed then played back at the same as the other tracks to create that slower and 'drawn' sound..... as a song, it's a technical marvel (for the time) and Ringo was at his best on this one! Still a fantastic, and advanced sounding song now, with it's backwards drum loops/guitar loops and whatever else was thrown in! I think Geoff Emerick was involved by now (?) and with George Martin, they created a masterpiece......
So here's my Daytripper story: when I saw Paul McCartney back in 2013, he and his band performed "Hey Jude" for their false finish, with Paul thanking everyone at the end and leaving the stage... which was the cue for all of us to start pleading for an encore. Well, I started yelling, "Daytripper! Play Daytripper!" and people in front of me began to turn around to look at me, with one of them even saying, "You know he can't hear you, right?" Then suddenly the opening notes of "Daytripper" started up, and all the people in front of me turned back to the stage in disbelief. (One of them even said to the person next to him, "It's Daytripper.") What they didn't know was that I actually had the setlist in my pocket, complete with encore performances.

There are several Beatles songs where I will cry or at least have to hold back tears. Let it Be is certainly one of them. Paul wrote that one for his mom whom he lost at a very early age.
@@MrKeychange Indeed. “All you need is love”. So many have misinterpreted that message and some have even mocked it. Love in the sense of a spiritual, unconditional love of one another hardly seems like something to scoff at. And, what a beautiful song.

Seeing your face on my feed is like the sun rising in the evening here in NYC. This Beatles journey is a cathartic experience for most musicians, especially those who are neurodivergent (as they were).
The idea that you're so giving, to the point of allowing us to rekindle our own experiences through your eyes, is a testament to who you are as an artist.

When my mother, Mary passed away and we went out to the coast to sprinkle her ashes into the ocean, my family and I just started singing Let It Be. It's a challenging song to listen to anymore. Your reaction broke my heart. In a good way.

Don't worry about getting emotional when listening to these songs. I'd be more worried about you if you *didn't* cry during Hey Jude or Let It Be, especially where you are in your life right now. Some of these songs ability to just rip the emotion out of you, whether you like it or not, is incredible.
"We can work it out" was a hidden gem for me. It´s so good when John and Paul sing the chorus together. What a duo! Considering their conflict after the Beatles, the lyrics becomes extra powerful. I´m so happy they made up in the end, because they obviously loved each other.
Your father raised a child of sunshine. I’m sure he’s with you now. Carry him in your heart.

Hey Crystal I appreciate you doing the Beatles. The song 'You Know My Name, Look Up My Number' was said to be John and Paul's favorite song they worked on together. When you broke down and got emotional, I just wanted to reach out and hug you. You're just a little bit older than a couple of my grandchildren. I'm praying for you.
Hey Jude literally saved my life. If you are going through a difficult time in life (and I know you are) it will never let you down. The Beatles are THE best medicine!!
The Beatles represent what is so fabulous about life and community, their brilliance is so vast and encompassing, the melodies so beautiful and timeless and their originality is staggering , they were young , fearless, funny and down to earth, God love em.

Yep...the Beatles' songs were all filled with, and about emotions....some of them had suffered great losses too at a young age (John lost his Mum at a young age); that came out in their music in many ways, so yeah, when Paul tells you to "Let It Be", and "let it out, and let it in"...just follow that advice - what will be, will be, don't fight it...make peace in your mind, and carry on 'letting it be"...!
I never thought about it before, but Rain has a sunshine feeling because that reflects how he (John) feels about rain. It's implied that he feels positively about the rain because the song is a critique of those who don't like it and run to get out of it. The song also feels like a metaphor for people who hide their heads when there's trouble and the key may reflect how amused he is at them...
Kind of funny that “Good Day Sunshine” was recorded during the same time.
For “We Can Work It Out”, I think Paul wrote Section A & John wrote Section B for seperate songs first then combined the two parts later.
There are songs where that is the case. This is not one of them. Paul wrote the A section and they worked on the B section together. It was not written separately.
This probably your 3rd or 4th reaction to the Beatles that I have been consecutively clicking and not getting tired of hearing your critique on past master musics. You are freakishly good!! You are smart, you are very intelligent! You are very descriptive in your analysis, you are a master of music. You picked out the era, the style, format the creator is trying to capture and portray -- you are from out of this world. Your vocabulary, choice of words are unique and distinctive! You are not using one-liners, playing the song from start to finish and conclude " I love it. Next." There are so many of them on RUclips. I am so glad I found you, your videos, and I think that it is a miracle that you exist! I love you!

You never need to apologize for how a song makes you feel, the Beatles, The Who & and the Doors have taken me on several roller coasters. The feelings you feel about your father are real. never apologize for that, embrace the love you have for him. I lost my father 18 years ago, he is the reason I love to listen to the Beatles. Together we listened to his Vinyl copies of Sgt. Pepper & Magical Mystery tour, and other bands from that time period.
So glad you went from tears from "let it be" to laughs with "you know my name". The Beatles are one of my favorite band and your father had good taste. I'm very sorry for your loss ... The grief doesn't go away. You just make room for it. I lost my dad over 19 years ago, and lost my mom this past spring. I thank the gods for music to help me heal. I'm so grateful for my parents for filling the house with music from the time I was small
I'm 53 and when I was a teenager, I really wanted to end it all but the Beatles music helped big time. Glad it does the same for you. I know God exists, because I truely believe their music is so inspirational.
I remember a radio interview George Harrison did late 1980’s to promote “Cloud Nine” and most of the callers were telling Beatles stories, but one guy called in and thanked George for saving his life. The guy listened to “All Things Must Pass” and it gave him a new lease on life after wanting to commit suicide. George seemed very moved by this.

In 1995 (I think that's the right year), the 3 then surviving Beatles recorded 2 songs using demo tracks John Lennon recorded at home in 1977: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love".

There's a line in Paul's tribute to John, which I'm sure will have meaning to you: "And if I say, I really loved you and was glad you came along, Then you were here today, For you were in my song." Crystal, I was 11 years old at the Beatles last concert at Candlestick Park. I made my daughter a huge Beatle fan. Her first concert was Ringo. And now she’s best friends with Ringo’s niece

Interesting thing about "Ballad of John and Yoko" - neither George nor Ringo is on that track. That's *Paul* drumming.
If Ringo refrains from playing the drums to the tune, Paul plays the drums excitedly
and Paul and Ringo disappeared, so it's a song that's unfortunate in terms of completion

Please check some of the Moody Blues albums. They all had a theme thru out and had a very different sound from anyone else. Again Crystal you are AWESOME!
I never liked how the Let It Be album version of Get Back ended so abruptly. The “Get back, Loretta, your mommy’s waitin’ for ya” ending with Paul’s ad libs and the fade out is the real version, in my opinion.
I think that the album version works because it includes McCartney and Lennon thanking the audience at the end of the song which was fitting for the last song in the last album that they released before they split

The awesome electric piano you fell in love with on Don't Let Me Down is played by guest-Beatle Billy Preston, who played it on Get Back as well.
Glad you caught those fantastic bass figures in Old Brown Shoe. Along with Something, my favorite bass player's best lines are in George's songs!
I also love the sound of the Fender Rhodes. Crystal, you should check out Steely Dan’s “Aja”. Very jazzy feel and if you love the electric piano you will love their sound.
Because of the reversed vocals, at the end of 'Rain', you can actually hear them singing "Nair"....

And then, after the emotional onslaught of 'Let It Be', the Beatle humor of 'You Know My Name' bringing the smile back to our faces. I used to play this on the jukebox at the Student Union building just to annoy people.

I've been listening to these songs for over forty years and I've always wished I could hear them again for the first time, which you've done for me. Thank you for that gift. Crystal, I just want to start off by saying it makes sense to be emotional and never apologize for being honest and real. Your sincerity always comes across as does The Beatles in their music and lyrics. We all discover The Beatles at different points, and you’ve only just begun on your musical journey. I've listened to The Beatles all my life but find myself going back to them 'when I find myself in times of trouble'. That's what makes them so great. Dealing with loss never gets easier but I'm sure your dad is watching over you and will always be with you

Also, a few fun facts:
1. Believe it or not this is actually the same recording of Across the Universe, they are just mixed differently for different instruments and the tape is manipulated to change the key. There is a third version on Anthology 2 that is, in my opinion, the best version.
2. Check out the longer version of You Know My Name (Look Up the Number). It’s even more fun.
3. Paul actually was the drummer on Ballad of John and Yoko.
Beatles music can be such a powerful and an emotional experience, Crystal.
Glad you pointed out the bass on the bridge to "Old Brown Shoe"! It's my favorite part of the song and there's not a more difficult bassline in the entire Beatles' catalog. After listening to George's original recording I believe he came up with it since he played all the parts on the demo. Paul follows through nicely, though. Also love the bass on the bridge to "Don't Let Me Down".
Past Masters was organized in late 1980s when CDs first came out and it's a collection of Bestle songs which were singles and/or never appeared on any of their 11 studio albums.
I wasn’t anywhere close to being as aware and smart as you when I first heard this music. Not to mention analytical about the music. Thank you!

When you mentioned in the Hey Jude song the line about 'sense of community', you taught me something to think about, about a song I've heard a 100 times before. You do like opening up people's ears and minds, don't you!
One of my favorite outtakes of “Hey Jude” is when John sings “Goo go ga Jude!” You can tell he’s having so much fun playing on this song.

I am so sorry for your loss, losing a parent is life changing. I'm so glad he left you the Beatles to help you through. I will do the same for my son. This is something I wish I would be able to tell my son but I won't be here to do say it. I'm betting your dad wants you to know. "Please don't feel guilty, he knew you loved him. He knew you were just living your life, don't beat yourself up for not spending more time. He is right there with you, loving the fact that you 'get' what he wanted to share about the Beatles" You're doing beautifully. I recall reading years ago that Paul sang 'Lady Madonna' using what he called his 'Elvis' voice.
My very deep condolences for the loss of your dad. I lost mine a few years ago, and one song that helped me through it was Warren Zevon's Keep Me In Your Heart. Never be afraid to show your emotions.

It's wonderful that you can find some comfort and also lightheartedness in their songs. To think 4 young teenagers becoming friends and eventually in a few short years as young men hit the world by storm. An event that changed their lives and everyone that opened their hearts to their music.

I concur. Someone once said of The Beatles, “not only did they never do the same thing twice, they never did the same thing once”.
I was a kid growing up in the sixties, my father died when I was 11 yrs old and my mother when I was 15 yrs old. My family, and the music of The Beatles helped me through it. Bless your heart Crystal, you're a lovely young lady, I'm sure your dad would be proud. Enjoying your reaction videos, a bit of info for you, The Beatles were big fans of a radio show in the UK called The Goon Show, which was weird and whacky comedy, I think they had that in mind when they did You Know My Name ( Look Up The Number ).

you have to go through this more easily, cause you don't. You're a human and at this moments, you have to let your human side put all your suffering out. As John Lennon said "cry baby cry, make your mother sigh" what I understand that you can cry and it's not a weakness to show that you're crying, that you're in a weak moment of your life. Let you understand yourself.
Seeing how strong is your feelings about your dad, I can tell he's a wonderful person and he's proud of her daughter loving him so much like that (i dont have english as a main language, so sorry about any grammar mistake)

Hi Crystal. I've been following so many different reactors over the past year, and while I have many favorites, I have to say that you have breathtaking musical knowledge and expressiveness, on top of such a general vibe of emotional openness and emotional intelligence. I discovered you only a few weeks before you lost your dad, and I can only restate what so many others have said here: that we're very sorry for your loss; that we're humbled that you've been willing to share the experience with us; that you absolutely shouldn't apologize for whatever emotional processing you need to do; and finally, that it's so, so fortunate that you still had significant chunks of your Beatles journey left, and that you've kept with it. I was 7 when the Beatles broke up, and their music has been a dominant influence and source of strength for me ever since. Before this current moment of youtube music reactions I didn't think I could appreciate them any more than I already had for decades, but this really is something new. Thank you. I've got the Past Masters II CD on rotation in my car (Abbey Road and White Album are in the console), and now there's just one more layer of feeling on top of all the others. xo

Crystal.... Tomorrow (November 6th) is the 11th anniversary of the passing of my mother. My father passed in 1993 and my only sibling passed in 2003. I was very close with my mother and when she died, I was emotionally crushed. Devastated. I feel your pain. And I know how hard it must be for you, especially at such a young age. I know it sounds cliched but time does heal all wounds. Trust me on this. There will always be a scar but the pain will slowly fade. The tears will dry and sweet memories will fill the void. Just remember, as long as you carry your father in your heart, he will continue to live.
No need to apologize for being emotional. It provides balance to the analysis. It's also part of what makes you...well...you. There are many Beatles books, several just about their music. "Beatlesongs" is really good, lots of quotes about authorship and recording, who played what, chart success where applicable.
You probably already know that Paul wrote Hey Jude for John's son, Julian. Let it Be was from a dream that Paul had about his mother, Mary, who died when he was a teenager. In the dream she told him to not worry, just let it be.
On The Ballad of John & Yoko only John and Paul appear on the song. John ran into the studio wanting to record and Paul was the only one there. George and Ringo were out on holiday. Paul played drums on this (as well as Back in USSR, Dear Prudence, and Why Don't We Do It In the Road.) This song, recorded in April 1969 after the let down which was the Get Back (eventually Let It Be) sessions in January, gave them a new sense of optimism to keep working together which led to the recording of the Abbey Road album. Then after Abbey Road they decided to go their separate ways. Then John and "wall of sound" producer Phil Spector polished up the Get Back session recordings from the year earlier and released the album as Let It Be in April 1970. (along with the documentary of same name) The other Beatles sent Ringo to ask Paul to delay release of his first solo self titled album and Paul threw Ringo out of the house, not to talk then for over a year. John and Yoko went to controversial Scream Therapy and together with Ringo recorded John's 1st solo album: The Plastic Ono Band. And in Dec. 1970 George's 1st solo album came out called All Things Must Pass. That double album became the all time best selling post Beatles solo album.
This was an incredibly moving, poetic and insightful video on many levels - musical, emotional and philosophical. Millions of us have cried and cheered. My most intimate song is Here, There and Everywhere. This song reminds me of my mother's love,, who passed in 1980 at age 44. Cheers!!!
Listening to Crystal discover these Beatles' recordings for the first time reminds me of myself 40+ years ago, first discovering the Beatles' music on my parents' little record player that only had one speaker. The key to memory, as the movie "Bladerunner 2049" instructs us, is emotion. And the Beatles' music is packed with emotion. That's why it resonates so deeply with fans. We attach the emotion of our memories with these recordings. It is now happening to Crystal as it did to the rest of us. You are now a die-hard Beatles' fan for life, Crystal. The bad news of that, however, is that any attempt to discover other bands and other artists will always disappoint somewhat as you're discovering the very best of the best of popular music.
Fun facts: 'Ballad Of John And Yoko' - it IS autobiographical about the hassles John and Yoko were experiencing the time. Only John and Paul played on this song. John, impulsive as usual, gave Paul a call and got him into the studio to assist. Paul did the drums, bass and background vocals. John had everything else.

Thank you for your videos. I have loved the Beatles for 30+ years but I find my love growing stronger with each new year. I too lost my dad this past year and it has been beyond difficult. But as Paul says in Hey Jude - let it out and let it in. And in Let It Be (my all time fave song!) he states to let it be. That doesn’t mean to ignore something and try to forget about it. To me it means you never forget, as I won’t ever forget my amazing dad! But to know that he may have passed on, but he will always be with me. And I am to let it be and to keep moving forward with my life. Knowing that he is in a good place. And so am I.

At the roller skating rink all those years ago, when "Day Tripper" came on the whole place would speed up at least two notches, lol.
I know others have said this, but the drums on Ballad are played by Paul. They are the only two featured on that track as it was recorded when Ringo was away filming and George was on holiday 😝

I'm so sorry you lost your dad. I understand because I lost my mom long ago. I was devastated that I'd never see her again. Then got married and wife had a daughter who looks, sounds, and acts just like my mom. She has her sense of humor, musical talent, we joke and laugh together. Genetics are amazing. Some day you might have a son and he might be just like your dad. Until then, I know your heart is broken, and I feel your pain because I was there. The nightmares, the pointless guilt over things that you shouldn't feel guilty about. Your dad wouldn't want you feeling that way. I know because I wouldn't want my kid feeling like that.
Also, you make me appreciate the Beatles. Even songs I didn't know or thought i disliked. Your break down and enthusiasm is infectious, Take care.

“Ballad of John and Yoko” is just John and Paul, no other Beatles, no outside musicians. George was on vacation in India, seeing the sights that he didn’t to see when the four were there recently studying meditation, and Ringo was filming The Magic Christian with Peter Sellats, so John and Paul play everything. There’s a funny outake where John asks “Ringo” to change the tempo, and Paul at the drums laughs and says “Okay, George.”
There’s now a question whether “Old Brown Shoe” might also be Paul on drums. An early take was released recently from when Paul was drumming because Ringo was still filming, and the drums sound like the final. Did Ringo get a couple days off before going back to the studio? It’s a debate.
The full version of “You Know My Name, Look Up The Number” was a lot longer, with them playing even more characters. Unfortunately that’s still unreleased, but there’s a different edit on the Anthology 3 album that has some of the parts that were edited out.
There’s lots on the Anthology and Live at the BBC albums that are worth a listen and reaction. Lots are just different versions of songs you know, but there’s a large number of songs that never found their way onto an album or single. Plus, some of the different versions are extremely different.

Your face and expressions shows how much you appreciate this music, and seeing you listening to it for the first time take me back nearly 60 years when I first heard them myself and then waiting expectantly and excitedly for their next album or single to be released. “Let It Be” brings back the people we’ve lost. Paul’s mother came to him in a dream and said it. And so many who hear it think of their departed loved ones. There’s something magical about that.
