"She Loves You" was the song that absolutely broke the Beatles loose worldwide. Along with "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" it was the massive hit they played on Ed Sullivan on Feb. 9, 1964. (I remember watching it as a little kid.)
Not quite true. "Please Please Me" was the first big one for the Beatles in Britain, "She Loves You" was the one that swept over Europe and made them big enough for the U.S. music industry to take notice of them, but it was "I Want to Hold Your Hand" that finally allowed them to break loose in America (the biggest music market). This was not by accident, either. Capitol Records, their record company in the U.S., had refused to release their singles and albums prior to "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (including "She Loves You") But after the success of "She Loves You" in Europe, Capitol finally jumped on board the bandwagon and released "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in the U.S. and spent money to promote it. You are, however, correct that they performed both "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" on the Ed Sullivan show the first night (and also the next couple weeks). "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was number one at the time (reaching number one in the U.S. at the end of January, 1964 and remaining there throughout February). "She Loves You" was just starting to get noticed when the Beatles performed it on Sullivan, coming in at number seven the second week of February. It would move up to number three the third week of the month, number two the week after and finally overtake "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to go number one in March. Bonus fact: when they performed the first night on Ed Sullivan, another act performing included a 19 year old Davy Jones, performing with the cast of Oliver as the Artful Dodger.
"Please Please Me," "From Me to You," and "She Loves You," released on small labels, stiffed in the US until AFTER "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit #1, and "The Ed Sullivan Show" appearances made the industry aware of their other recordings.

Wonderful review Crystal! I've been listening to the Beatles since 1963 when they released Please Please Me. She Loves You was the biggest selling British single of the Sixties. Paul wrote I Wanna Hold Your Hand specifically to break the USA. In the UK it knocked She Loves You off #1. I'm really enjoying the freshness and musicality of your Beatles reviews. Thank You Girl!

I love the early Beatles material. Their voices worked so well together. When I was a young kid when the songs were played on a jukebox or on the radio John Lennon’s voice was like a beacon. Those vocals just stood out so strong. I had to wait until I was older before I could buy the albums for myself.
Very sorry for your loss Crystal. My condolences to you and your family. Your Beatles reactions are so good, I hope that helps your healing process. ☘️
She Loves You was an insanely big hit in the UK, and was the biggest selling single of all time there, until it was outsold by the Paul McCartney and Wings song, Mull of Kintyre in 1977.
Listening to "She Loves You" and all these others reminds me of an article a critic once wrote, I think maybe in The Times of London, where he said that Paul and John "think so simultaneously in terms of melody and harmony" that it's nearly impossible to pick out one line and say, "That's the melody." And it really is simple, if you're singing along, to switch from one line to the other, even though the harmonies are often fairly sophisticated! Like in "She Loves You," after "You think you've lost your love" in unison, either line on "well I saw her yesterday" could easily be considered "the melody." It's really remarkable.
Yes, they were disciples of the idea that there wasn't one melody line and one harmony line. There were multiple melody lines that together made harmony.
Excellent analysis' Crystal. (FWIW) Love Me Do is in the key of G (G7 - C). Using the 4 (C) chord as a natural suspension that's built right in . You're spot on, From Me To You is in C. (Using a 1 - 6m - 1 - 5 - 4 - 6m - 1 - 5 - 1 for the verse) The C chord is prominent in both songs. Thank You Girl is reminiscent of some Buddy Holly chord structures. I'll Get You is a more workman like composition. The Bridge chord sequence in From Me To You returns here in I Want To Hold Your Hand. (5m7 - 1 - 4 ) Indeed, This Boy is John's homage to his Doo-Op & R&B heroes. Lastly, Brian Epstein felt the German audiences disserved special recognition for their early support of the Beatles. Most Germans bought the English versions!! I'm really looking forward to your cogent thoughts on Side 2. Best wishes, RNB
I just discovered you and learned about your loss. My deepest condolences. I lost my mother and wife to cancer and had my fair share of grief, but The Beatles always put a smile on my face. Even more so McCartney. I never considered it important to find a life partner who could appreciate music in that way. But confronted with your work, I know I was wrong. Some of your reactions to Beatles songs made me cry. I wish I could restart my life with that understanding. You are a blessing! Even if you never make a new video ever again, please know that you made a difference… Thank you!
Great reaction and review. My condolences to you, my dad passed away 2 months ago at the age of 66, like your dad was also a cop. He also got me into The Beatles and even named me after McCartney. Can’t wait to see your next video, and I’m always here for you.
sie liebt dich yeah yeah yeah 🙂 there are also recordings of the beatles in the starclub in hamburg .the hamburg time was very formative for the beatles and they got to know good friends. klaus voorman, who has made covers of revolver and played bass in many solo projects of lennon and harrison.or the friend of lennon and first beatles bassist stuart sutcliffe who fell in love with astrid kirchherr and stayed in hamburg and died there very young tragically.the cover of the lennon album rock'n'roll is a picture from this time
Your tribute to your father at the end of this is very loving and sweet. It looks like he led a rich, active, love-filled life, and it's clear that he was special because he raised someone like you. You're a living tribute to his wonderful spirit. All my sympathy, Crystal. *HUG* from a stranger
Sincere condolences on your loss - wishing you and your family all the best. Your love shines through, and I'm sure he is as proud of you as you are of him.
Oh my... I just found you over the past week, and have been delightedly watching your videos and enjoying your fun energy and insights... and while I was enjoying all of that, you were going through some real grief. I am so truly sorry that you lost your father... and suddenly, I gather. I wish I could fix it...
My heart sheds a few tears for you and many more my dear friend. I too lost my father 4 years ago. Just remember he'll always be around you no matter where you are. His light will shine for you always. and watch over you and your family with love and strength.
What a beautiful tribute to your Dad. So sorry for your loss, Crystal. Thinking of you and your family. Take all the time you need to grieve and I hope the love of music that you shared with your Dad continues to bring you comfort and healing.
So sad to hear of your Dad, my condolences. What a lovely tribute, and it's so cool to read he was learning and evolving, as was my Dad, who passed at almost the same age. Minutes after my Dad died I felt a reassuring presence conveying the message: "Don't worry, I'm fine, you do your thing", and have never felt quite the same about death since then. I'm sure your Dad's spirit/energy is doing fine. The music... was checking out a video of the international #1 hits of the 60s, and the jump in energy level that The Beatles brought with "She Loves you" and I" Want to Hold Your hand" was striking, a real "before and after". Producer George Martin literally had to chase them down to record the German versions, which the record label thought would be necessary to break big in Germany, quite wrongly as it turned out, and Martin retrospectively agreed, regarding the versions as something like parodies Peter Sellers might have done for laughs. If the band sounded a bit disinterested, it was because they *were.*
So sorry to hear about your tragic loss, Crystal, far far too soon. Your father sounds like a wonderful man - the kind we have far too few of in this world. May your memories of him be a blessing to you and provide you comfort.
Really enjoyed this as I have all of your reactions to these albums. The way you break down all aspects of the music, vocals, and production is outstanding. I also listen to music the same way, I love watching you discover the Beatles. Keep it up Crystal!❤️
Crystal, I am so sorry to hear about your father's passing. My dad was diagnosed with Stage III lung cancer in October 2009 and the prognosis was 12-15 months. It is a miracle that he is alive today, and, although he still suffers from COPD, I can't imagine losing a parent so my heart goes out to you and your family. I know that nothing can fill the hole in your heart from losing a parent, but I hope that in some small way The Beatles can help heal somewhat. I became a Beatles fan in the summer of 1980 when I was 8 years old and I discovered them going through my mom's record collection. She had the American Beatles albums on Capitol and that's how I began my Beatledom. Years later I got the UK CD's for Christmas in 1990 and it gives me so much joy to watch you experiencing the newfound euphoria of the magic of The Beatles' music. The early songs are so innocent and simple, but I would never say they are simplistic. There's so much more going on than I think people realized at the time. The harmonies, the chord changes, the lyrics, etc. Yes, a lot of it was basic pop music, but a track like "She Loves You" still sounds powerful today. There's a story where The Beatles engineer, Norman Smith, saw the lyrics of "She Loves You" on the microphone stand and said, "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah? Now this is one song I'm NOT going to like." Yet he said when they played the first take of the song he knew it was going to be a hit. Everyone did. Imagine being in the studio and listening to "She Loves You" take 1. It still sounds great today. I will definitely purchase BEATLES MERCH to help you and your family out, but I hope you know that you're surrounded by so many friends who truly care about you and send you positive vibes.
Yeah so many other singles could’ve been double A sides - like This Boy with I want to hold your hand, and Strawberry Fields forever with Penny Lane, Can’t Buy me love and You can’t do that, etc
The early Beatles songs did have a lot of harmonica which they later abandoned. It was kind of a trademark for them in the early days. The version of "Love Me Do" on "Past Masters" features Ringo on drums which is a rare version. The version mostly heard is the one from "Please Please Me" which features Andy White on drums and Ringo on tambourine.
I'm so sorry for your loss Crystal. Reading the tribute you wrote to your dad, then reading other peoples comments and condolences with respect to your loss was all a bit overwhelming, and I kinda had to fight through the tears. I think we all hope we can make an impact on loved ones the way your dad made an impact on you. Again, my deepest condolences. Peace
I was really sorry to hear about your loss Crystal. The tribute at the end of the video was very moving. Your analysis of these early Beatles singles and "B" sides was excellent as usual.
Deepest sympathies on the loss of your father. Wishing you find peace and healing. I believe our spirits live on. Our essence & soul is infinite. He'll watch over you I'm sure. The tribute you shared is beautiful.
Another great and fun video. I read what you wrote in the description and I hope you don't mind me bringing it up. It was such a heartfelt praising of your dad that I could let let it go without saying something. Although it can be sad, I have a different brain then most and I think it is important to remember the person and celebrate the memories of them when they pass. Some people choose to avoid the subject completely because it is too much to handle, I respect them too. As my journey through your videos continues for a week now, I can see the poem coming up. I already liked it but i already know it will make me cry when i finally watch it. As a fellow poet/lyricist/artist/producer/etc I know I am going to really feel it. I just want to say that your father (and mom) have done an incredible job with raising you because you are awesome and talented Crystal. I KNOW your dad is smiling down and watching over you. Many people WISH they had a daughter like you. Don't let the world or the entertainment business change you. God Bless! PS - Mood change based on what you said in the video, You should write a song called "I'll Get You In The End"
Your words about your dad are so heartwarming. I lost mine a few years ago and it still hurts, but what it has turned into is doing things that he loved make me happy. I feel things I do, I can bring him along in some way. Looking forward to you continuing with your videos when you're ready. Once you're done with The Beatles, why don't you share your dad's favorite music?
Sending you love, peace, and all-around good vibes. Hope you feel better soon! You’re totally awesome and your effervescent personality is PERFECT for listening to the Beatles, and your smart and incisive analysis is right on!👌🏽Take care✌🏽😊💜🙏🏽💫💫💫
My dear Crystal you're such a wonderful person and you likely got a lot of your charm from not only your mother, but your father too. I wish you only happiness and a most rewarding life. Bless you. Also, love your critique of the Beatles.
I'm so sorry you lost your daddy:(.. my condolences. I pray you find comfort and solace, and I'm so glad you have his enduring love to embrace in your heart.
I didn't realize 'till much later how much their early harmonies reflected those of the Everly Brothers, who McCartney mentioned in his song "Let 'Em In".
I started watching your videos recently, and as a hardcore old Beatles fan it has been a great delight vicariously rediscovering all the beauty in their songs. I am sure I'm not the only one, be sure that you touched a lot of people and we all send our love and care for you.
What never ceases to amaze me is how The Beatles went from “Love Me Do” to “Abbey Road” in *7* years! I can’t think of another pop/rock group with that kind of musical growth over such a short period of time. (Of course, it helped that they were releasing about two albums a year, plus a host of singles.)
There's a brilliant video of Liverpool football fans in the Kop in 1964 singing 'She Loves You', as 'well as 'Anyone Who Had a Heart', which was a hit for Cilla Black, another Liverpudlian. Coincidentally, Paul McCartney wrote 'Step Inside Love' for Cilla, one of three or four Lennon-McCartney compositions that were written for other artists, including 'World Without Love' for Peter & Gordon, and 'Bad To Me' for Billy J. Kramer.
So sorry for your loss. Life is hard and losing a parent is one of the hardest things about it, especially one as great as yours. Things will slowly get better, but it will take time, it's not easy. All you can do is keep him in your heart and cling to the memories and i know u will do that. I'd say be strong, but I think you are and will be. Take care...
I’m so sorry for your loss Crystal. It’s clear from your description that your father lives on through his wonderful daughter. I’m sure he was so proud of you and was aware of how much he meant to you and your family. Sending you all my thoughts and prayers at what Im sure is a difficult time. x
Sorry for your loss Crystal - you may not think so now but time is a great healer. I lost my father when I was 20 - far too young and I missed his warmth and wisdom for many, many years. He left a substantial hole in my life that could never be filled - but it helped shape me for what I am. I still think of him fondly - but life is for the living.
My sincere condolences. At least, he left behind a wonderful daughter. Seems like he was put in this world for a reason. He is with God now. May he rest in peace.
So very sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like a special man and I'm sure he'd want you to be happy and keep doing what you love. It'll always hurt, but with time you'll be able to appreciate all the good times and carry on living life in the way he would want you to. Much love.
That bridge in "From Me To You" is something Paul McCartney often talks about with pride because it was one of the first times they went into that major 7th chord. He and John really got quite chuffed after hearing that line.
The part that was really different at the time was when the bridge, "I've got arms...", changes everything and goes to an unheard of minor 5th on "arms". Nobody did chord changes like that in Rock n Roll at the time. I'm pretty positive that's what Paul was talking about.
@@dggydddy59 Yes. It was a big step in their songwriting, for sure. John also was very proud of the guitar riff in “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, the D-C#-D-D#-E one. He was very proud of that.
As a father of a 35 year old daughter with whom I am very close, I worry about the day my life ends. No loving father wants his daughter to suffer any pain. My daughter has, and will always have my heart. A true father daughter bond is a wonderful thing. It doesn't ever end. It has a permanent place in our hearts. Be good. Do good. Spend every minute well!
The big significance of the single version of Love Me Do versus the version on Please Please Me, on the album, session drummer Andy White played the drums and Ringo played the tambourine, but on the single Ringo plays the drum part and there is no tambourine(I think what you're hearing in this version must be on the high-hat cymbal, but nobody is playing a stand alone tambourine, as far as I can tell). So sorry for your loss, Crystal, your father seems like an amazing man, and I know he must be so proud of you.
Lennon started out in a "skiffle band". Skiffle bands were popular in the 50's. They were just simple instruments. Lennon played acoustic guitar in his skiffle band. The other instruments were "wash tub" bass, harmonica and a wash board for rhythm. They were popular because the instruments were so cheap everyone could afford to put one together. Also they had harmony singing. The most expensive instrument in the group was the acoustic guitar. When I listen to this early stuff again my first impression is that its kind of simplistic. The Beatles took a lot of heat for that from professional songwriters at the time. But when you really listen again you realize how complex they really were. And remember that all these early songs were only 3 minutes long. They stuffed so much into those small packages. And the bridge in This Boy is timeless. I spent my early years on the beach in the summer with my transistor radio listening to all these songs. And everyone else on the beach had their radios tuned to the same station. It was so heavenly.
I am sorry for your loss. I am 65 an have a 26 year old son and 22 year old daughter. I lost my only sibling last year, my younger brother. We never had a chance to say goodbye. I cannot truly say I know how you feel, you are so young. Just know you are not alone in your loss and I will be thinking about you as you review the band I grew up with as a kid, causing me to become a music teacher. it helps to keep busy between bouts of grief.
I'm so sad about your loss. I lost both of my parents over the past year and a half. I have seen your Beatles reaction videos and I know that all it takes is a simple melody to make you emotional. I can tear up even during a happy song if it brings back memories. I can imagine how difficult it is going to be for you to now listen to a song like "In My Live" or "Yesterday". Stay strong.
Your father was a great, beautiful man, and I am heartbroken for you, for him, and for everyone who knew and loved him. You are correct: this is a scar that will never go away.....and it SHOULDN'T. All that hurt is just a testament to how much you loved him, how much he was loved, and how much he is missed, and always will be. Please, don't feel you have to make any videos for us, ESPECIALLY related to this music, which I know you associate partly with him. Your anger is completely justified. He left way too soon, it's not fair and it's just a bitter pill to swallow. Feel however you need to feel, there is no right or wrong, just keep getting through each moment, moment by moment. Cry all the tears you have to, whenever you need to, punch a wall, laugh like a lunatic, whatever it is, just let it out. You are a special and very appreciated and very loved person, and it breaks all of our hearts that such pain should visit you, our new friend, our new sister. Your Dad sounds like such an amazing man, I just wish I could have shaken his hand and told him what an amazing daughter he raised. But.....I have a feeling he knew that already. I'm so sorry, Crystal. To quote a great lyric that says it all: when things go wrong, go wrong with you......it hurts me too. xxxxxxxxxxxx
Can you imagine hearing this stuff for the first time ever when you are 14? That's what I did all those years ago in 1963! It was like every bright sunrise there's ever been all rolled into one. Thank You Girl was the B-side to From Me to You, I'll Get You in the End was the B-side to She Loves You and This Boy was the B-side to I Wanna Hold Your Hand. For some reason, Please Please Me is missing from this collection (it came between Love Me Do and From Me To You.) Thank you so much for your appreciation of this music!

May I offer my sincere condolences Crystal, on the passing of your Father. You and your family are in my prayers, RNB
Lots of strength, your father must have been a great person, we love you Crystal!
May your father's legacy be present in your life always.
Great reaction and review. My condolences to you, my dad passed away 2 months ago at the age of 66, like your dad was also a cop. He also got me into The Beatles and even named me after McCartney. Can’t wait to see your next video, and I’m always here for you.
Just a big thank you for doing these Beatles album reviews. Makes my day.
sie liebt dich yeah yeah yeah 🙂 there are also recordings of the beatles in the starclub in hamburg .the hamburg time was very formative for the beatles and they got to know good friends. klaus voorman, who has made covers of revolver and played bass in many solo projects of lennon and harrison.or the friend of lennon and first beatles bassist stuart sutcliffe who fell in love with astrid kirchherr and stayed in hamburg and died there very young tragically.the cover of the lennon album rock'n'roll is a picture from this time
Your tribute to your father at the end of this is very loving and sweet. It looks like he led a rich, active, love-filled life, and it's clear that he was special because he raised someone like you. You're a living tribute to his wonderful spirit. All my sympathy, Crystal. *HUG* from a stranger
So sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing him with us. You look very much like your mom, and she's beautiful!
Such a heartfelt tribute to your Dad. Deepest sympathy and condolences to you and your family Crystal!
I am so sorry for your loss. I only recently found your videos and am enjoying your reactions and thoughts about this great music.
So very sorry to hear of your loss, CS. Your music reactions bring happiness - always know that.
Sorry for your loss. Many of us have lost parents, and you are right : time heals everything, but this is a scar that never fades away...
Thank you for making these videos - I hope they will help you as much as they are helping me.
Very sorry for your loss! Thank you for what your giving us!
Dear Crystal,
Our loved ones never die. We keep them forever in our hearts.
A big warm hug FROM ME TO YOU.
Truly sorry for your loss, Crystal. Just know he is still watching over you.
My condolences. I had to let you know how much I am enjoying your analysis of the Beatles.
So sorry to hear about your tragic loss, Crystal, far far too soon. Your father sounds like a wonderful man - the kind we have far too few of in this world. May your memories of him be a blessing to you and provide you comfort.
Thank you for the collage at the end. ❤️🧚🏽♂️🌹
Putting Revolver at the end is a smart move -- You're saving the best until last.
"This Boy" was actually a "B"-side. For anyone else it would have been an "A"-side. Solid -- confident -- performance.
“Solid”? It is incredible
Yeah so many other singles could’ve been double A sides - like This Boy with I want to hold your hand, and Strawberry Fields forever with Penny Lane, Can’t Buy me love and You can’t do that, etc
@@OzTwanger yes it's solid. It was a B-side for them for a reason
Deeply sorry to hear of your dads passing…looking forward to the next video 💕
The early Beatles songs did have a lot of harmonica which they later abandoned. It was kind of a trademark for them in the early days. The version of "Love Me Do" on "Past Masters" features Ringo on drums which is a rare version. The version mostly heard is the one from "Please Please Me" which features Andy White on drums and Ringo on tambourine.
So sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family. May God give you comfort and strength.
I'm stunned by the last bit about your father's passing. I'm sorry to hear of it. I send my condolences to you and your family.
Great reaction as always. Sad for your loss and wish you peace.
Sending best wishes to you and your family ! Great video as usual !
They were more into the American Pop vibe at this early point and The Every Brothers were a huge influence on their harmonies ..
They vocal bridge by Lennon on This Boy is one of my all time musical passages. Ass kicking
I’m sorry for your loss, Crystal. I understand your feelings, having lost my Dad two years ago. Nice video. Take care.
I'm so sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing... 😥
Sorry for your loss. I enjoy the beatles analysis. Thx.
Kramer.
So sad for the loss of your dad Crystal lots of love from Ireland
So sorry for your loss. Life is hard and losing a parent is one of the hardest things about it, especially one as great as yours. Things will slowly get better, but it will take time, it's not easy. All you can do is keep him in your heart and cling to the memories and i know u will do that. I'd say be strong, but I think you are and will be. Take care...
I’m so sorry for your loss Crystal. It’s clear from your description that your father lives on through his wonderful daughter. I’m sure he was so proud of you and was aware of how much he meant to you and your family. Sending you all my thoughts and prayers at what Im sure is a difficult time. x
Deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved father.
Our thoughts are with you 🙏 , magnificent review as usual.
The end tribute to your daddy was beautiful, Crystal,
So very sorry for your loss.
Aww my heart hurts for you. 😢 May your father rest in peace. Music is magic.
@phillydisco They actually had to copy the Ringo version off an original 45.
This boy is by far by favourite here!
Sorry to hear of your loss. May his memory be eternal.
For some reason, Please Please Me is missing from this collection (it came between Love Me Do and From Me To You.)
Thank you so much for your appreciation of this music!
I was hoping I'd get to hear your reaction to the Past Masters tracks! Some of the most essential Beatles tracks didn't end up as album cuts.
As an old Beatles fan since these songs were new, I am really enjoying your reviews of these songs! and Condolences on your loss - I hope the memories are some consolation - I know it's heat breaking.
