“I’m ready to cross that fine line” the line between reality and romantic fantasy perhaps or is this the essence being a creative musician. I think it’s about a guy who ultimately enters his delusion and becomes Deacon Blue. Songs outro is incredible.
It's hard to characterize Steely Dan... Rock, jazz, fusion... Yet they are recognizable as Steely Dan in all of their incarnations. You should try some of their early stuff (particularly from Can't Buy a Thrill). 'Reeling in the Years' from that album launched their career...
Steely Dan and Pink Floyd are my two favorite Jazz Rock bands. The foundation of much of Floyd's music is Jazz. I think their catalog will dismiss your more commercial impression of them.
Steely Dan IS polished. Smooth jazz fusion.....yacht rock, sure. Their lyrics can be very edgy and belie their soft edge. For more edge try Brand X (Phil Collins, drums) and Weather Report (Frank Shorter, sax) and Mahvishnu Orchestra (McLaughlin, guitar). All impressive jazz/fusion with a definite edge.
I will add Brand X to the list, as I am a fan of Weather Report, and Mahavishnu never clicked with me. Those guitar parts were too much to digest when I was a teenager. Maybe I'll revisit it and give it another chance.
What kind of music are you influenced by? I'd love to suggest some other things but it would be necessary to know your influences to know what to suggest that fits your tastes....
Man, if you would have asked me a year before I would say Zappa, RHCP, The Mars Volta. Now I say Neil Young, Gratefuldead and Bob Dylan 😅 This YT project opened my eyes and flammed my passion for music once again. But, "similar" to SD I like Brian Auger, Dr Lonnie Liston, Yes, Herbie Hancock, King Crimson... I also like Miles Davis, Coltrane, Mingus, Parker... so many! Feel free to shoot out any name that you find interesting.

The best song on the album. “They got a name for the winners in the world. I want a name when I lose” perfection
Love this song too! "I cried when I wrote this song, sue me if I play too long". Another great lyric! Thanks for reacting to this one!
Exactly what music should sound like!!!
Oh so good with the perfect fade out!

this song has great lyrics. so smooth it's almost easy to miss what's going on here.
Walter & Donald had dozens of musicians playing their take on the numbers and they chose the takes they felt fit the song.
An artists dream. Control over your vision and the final cut and they were great at it.
If you like this then you should definitely check out Donald Fagens solo album The Nightfly 1982. Very jazzy and some pop/rock as well.
Those are good albums.
Some of the finest music ever produced.
STEELY DANS Best song imo.
$2 million production cost in 1977 😳
Their recordings are perfection. What everyone else strives for.

This ain't no "one or two take" Neil Young, that's for sure. 😊
May I suggest FM by Steely Dan. Another awesome song with strings as well.
