Why can't they afford to pay the volunteers a living American wage? Kinda unfair when we ultimately need to move back and "real pay" like 50k a year would genuinely make sense so they are not thrown in a terrible position once we return home.

It's really an amazing opportunity to escape the wheel. Really you never have to go back to that after Peace Corps because it opens so many doors to other international development opportunities. I know a few volunteers who joined with literally only a few dollars in the bank. It is totally doable.

You mention that you had to pay rent, but I thought that PCV's are provided housing in addition to the monthly stipend? Can you please elaborate on this.

I've watched other videos where other say the PC pays the host family direct for hosting and that goes with groceries. Or where you renting your own apartment ?

As a vegan, the only thing I would still do differently is I would respectfully explain my reasons for not eating certain foods. Coming from a culture that is not open to this, I think respect is both ways and the host has to respect their guest’s personal wishes. It is an education opportunity.
Great question! Yes, they pay for both flights as well as the cost of two 50 pound checked bags. They also pay for your departure and return flights if you are medically evacuated (45 day limit) during your service.
Great question! It is a bit more complicated than this, but essentially by preventing us from driving during service, they are able to mitigate possible accidents. Since Peace Corps is funded by the US Government, they have to take extra measures to make sure they are protecting both the US citizens who are serving and the program itself. (If Congress thought Peace Corps was too dangerous then they could take away funding). Different countries have different levels of road safety, and in Nicaragua, during my service, road accidents were the 8th most common cause of death. It was unfortunately quite common to hear of a community member who died in a road accident-- I had a few students who lost family members during my service. One of my fellow PCVs actually lost a local friend during service due to an accident.

Hahaha I mean I would focus on all the amazing work in international development and the impact you will make in your community over the two years of your service. I may not have made this clear in the video, but the tax money is taken out before you are paid each month and before you get your COS allowance-- so you basically never see that money that goes to Uncle Sam. Peace Corps is funded by taxes, after all, so I guess that's just the small price you have to pay. Don't let the tax part discourage you!

Great question! You are provided a monthly stipend, a percentage of which is for paying rent.

Yes! If you prioritize traveling home during service, I highly recommend that you save enough money to do so prior to departure.

Not at all! I knew a few volunteers who did. I know T-Mobile has a pretty good international deal. I just deleted it in order to save money.
