I can't tell you how many sites I've visited and videos I've watched trying to figure out the best way to install a box. Your method is brilliant compared to all the others I've seen. Thanks so much! I'll be placing a new box this fall using your method.
@@msoolson few have ever called me brilliant, I’ll take it where I can get it! Kidding aside I’m really glad you’re enjoying them and finding them helpful, that’s why I make them. It’s to help other.
Thanks for this one, great job. I personally have not heard of the ceder shavings being bad for the birds. Over the years I've used Ceder, Pine and cypress shavings with no issues. Being that every winter I would clean out the box and add new shavings you can always tell from down feathers and egg shells if the ducks used the box. I had plenty used with all three of the kinds of shavings. However, I'll do some research to see if I can find anything on it. I think Mississippi State University has a lot of graduate studies like this posted on their site so I'll start there. Also as mentioned, that ever so slight 5 to 7 degree forward lean to the box will do wonders in helping the chicks escape the box. Thanks again and great job on the boxes.
Go to Home Depot and buy a pack of Hot Shot No-Pest Insect Strip. Cut it into about 1 inch pieces and staple the piece to the top of the clean out door. It will keep wasp and other insects from overtaking the nesting box. Trust me, it's no fun to open the clean out door and have a huge wasp nest full of angry wasp!!!
Great to know! I still have a lot of bedding I stored so I will probably use that, but i might try some cut switch grass in one box. It is just as soft and natural to them

what do you call that metal bar you installed prior to the 2" x 10ft piece of pipe? thank you for the video!
That’s just a 5’ metal T post you get from Lowe’s , nothing special there
Have a nesting pair on my little pond for the past couple years...
Just caught the short. Watching this one now.
New Sub, great content! Conservation in action.
Great ! Thanks so much
Can you leave this up all winter in Northern Wisconsin or will the ice-in/ice-out pull it out?
Cedar is very weather resistant, we leave them up all year for many years in NC with no issue. We don’t have much snow though
Bedding is good but I used leaves and dead grass they love it .. I also used alive camera
Great to know! I still have a lot of bedding I stored so I will probably use that, but i might try some cut switch grass in one box. It is just as soft and natural to them
Sorry... why cut off the pipe at all?
