    There are several dealbreakers for me on Canon’s mirrorless vs Sony’s A7iii or the A9. Most of what I’ve seen is the lack of matching Sony’s 20 FPS burst mode and the lack of auto focus tracking. As you stated, I think it’s a great step forward for Canon into the mirrorless world, but I don’t see myself running out to grab this for sports photography. I do hope that Canon soon comes out with something that can rival Sony’s lineup and if they do, I’ll purchase with no hesitation. Sidenote: **if you’re a Canon rep reading this, hurry up lol. I don’t want to leave but you’re not making this easy**

    I think this camera is a promising start, but I don't see myself rushing out to buy it for the sports photography that I do. 5-8 FPS is not that bad as Peter points out, but since I've got SLR bodies that are much superior to that, I don't see any point to buying this camera. Now, when/if Canon develops a mirror-less full frame that is similar to the 1DX II or the Sony A9 (minus the buffer issue), I could definitely see myself buying something like that ... provided Canon doesn't slap a ridiculous price on it.

  • @kennethgnielsen
    @kennethgnielsen 5 лет назад

    I'm astounded with this camera, the EOS R is a mystery to me on some very fine points and I think you are the person who would be best to ask... It's about the shutter and what happens the moment a photo is taken... In a DSLR camera, the sensor was covered up or 'shielded' from the light until the instant a photo was taken, same as a film DSLR camera... but this camera, I see a warning when I turn it off to not leave it pointed into the sun or bright light... I take it that the sensor is alway exposed to light as it is the receiver of light for the image and is the sole origination of image, both for capture and also for viewing in the EVF and back screen. To further complicate what I do not understand yet, there is a shutter or maybe two methods of shutter: 1.) a mechanical shutter (a moving curtain) and 2.) a software or electronic shutter which I do not understand at all yet, which must 'scan' the sensor to make the final exposure that becomes the image that is saved. You answered me in my previous question and in a sense I am asking again for more clarity... You said there was a 'momentary' black-out of image in the viewfinder the instant the photo is being taken, I have not noticed that yet even with high speed shooting... Maybe my eye is trained from the pentaprism Canon camera's I have owned and I simply am not noticing. Anyway, could you elaborate on what is happening the moment a photo is being taken, how does the camera decide if it will use mechanical or electronic shutter? - Is this 'blackout' real, or am I just missing it because it goes by so fast and I'm simply used to it happening with all DSLR's and now this camera too? tia, for your consideration in answering this.

    Hi Peter, Thanks for the great review. I always enjoy your video and learn a lot from them. I am going to buy EOS R and my main goal is to shoot fashion and portraits, as I know the 8 fps drops to 5 fps in continuous AF mode so my only concern is if 5 fps in Continuous AF mode can freeze a model sharply when she jumps, or a walking model in a catwalk or a model walking along the beach toward the camera or walking across the frame? I would highly appreciate you for your valuable time to help me! God bless you! Ali

    Nice review of a truly great camera. - I'm not getting any 'block out' of image when shooting high-speed up to 8 fps... there are settings to keep the image visible... I think you can overcome this with settings... I'll look into it again but I know there is one to put the 'just shot' image on screen after each shot, whew, what a waste that is... Like I said, I'll check but I'm shooting hs shutter all the time and not losing any of the action with the EOS R

    • @kevindiossi
      @kevindiossi 5 лет назад +3

      The feature you're talking about is actually covering up the shutter curtain blackout with a previous image, so there is a very small delay between real-world and what you see in camera. It can make tracking tricky in a situation described in the video. But it's not really a problem when tracking something in a linear path.

    You said 5 FPS is not bad but you then went to demonstrate the 8 FPS with One-Shot AF. This camera won't re-focus during 8 FPS continuos shooting! I find it hard to believe anyone would consider that "great" auto-focus! Great compared to what? Also, when continuous shooting through the electronic view finder with Servo AF this camera drops to 3 FPS!

    • @kevindiossi
      @kevindiossi 5 лет назад +10

      Partially correct. It sounds like you're getting your information from a poorly informed source because the FPS does not drop to 3fps, as I've read and heard countless times on the internet. I've had zero trouble maintaining 5fps with the camera while tracking. It will, however, slow down ever-so-slightly when you're using face tracking as opposed to the various, more traditional area modes that are available. This is honestly a result of slower read-off speed from this sensor and the amount of data milked by face tracking and detection. But if you shoot it like a traditional SLR (how you SHOULD photograph sports, IMO, and not let a camera choose where you focus) then it will remain solid at 5fps. Another thing to keep in mind is that this camera, unlike its competitors, remains a full 14-bit RAW file during burst shooting and does not drop to 12-bit. While the higher bit depth can be beneficial shooting outdoors with bright highlight recovery, it doesn't do the camera any favors in speed. This was a mistake from Canon and I hope they offer in a future firmware update with a sports mode that uses less AF points and has the option to drop quality to 12-bit like Sony and Nikon. This would shave off a lot of data the camera is trying to compute at once and may possibly offer increased framerates to match the 8fps we see in One-Shot mode.
      Regardless, the next generation camera needs to greatly surpass these numbers. I don't believe Canon had the means to produce a brand new sensor at this price point that could achieve everything we're looking for. Throwing in a modified 5D4 sensor isn't a terrible idea from a stills standpoint, but the read-off speeds are poor, as demonstrated in the 4K crop and slower framerate while continuously autofocusing.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 5 лет назад +2

      I used to own an A9, and it nailed 20 images out of 20 per second with Sony G/GM lenses, full autofocus-speed, zero-blackout, no-rattling sound, incredible image-machine-gun. It's totally meaningless to use an EOS R for sports when we have A9 for almost two years now. The fundamental problem with EOS R is that the dual-pixel system is not fast enough for sports; that's why it can produce only 3 - 5 images per second with AF. The A9 sensor could even churn out 160 images per second, if the processor and the rest of the camera could handle that. Canon is not even in the same league where Sony sports sensors are. Canon should buy sensors from Sony, honestly, if they wanted to keep up. Have you seen the latest demo of the Sony A6400, what it could perform on subject tracking, mind-blowing, and that's just a $1000 entry-level camera? The gap between Sony and Canon is getting bigger and bigger; A9 was announced in Spring 2017, more than a year later Canon was only able to create EOS R, what can we say? EOS R was the last full-frame mirrorless camera announced in 2018; I guess Sony, as a response, is announcing another generation of its full-frame cameras in 2019 with even more extended performance increasing the gap to 3-generations. I've just placed an order for an EOS-R, but I am more and more convinced that I am just wasting my time and money on Canon. All of us want to love Canon, but Canon is simply not capable to compete in technology. If you ever had an A9 in your hand for sports, you don't want to go back to stone age.

      @@kevindiossi Agree, single point instead of face tracking will give you around 5 fps instead of 3 fps in ai servo mode. Switch out of AI servo and get 8 fps if subject stationary. You will improve your continuous shooting speed by also changing Silent LV shoot setting from Disable to Mode 1, and if you want to get the best speed set Silent shutter from OFF to ON. I prefer Disable and OFF respectively but nice to have some degree of control. As an aside, turning off image review, setting tracking sensitivity and Accel./decel. tracking values to suit your context definitely helps improve tracking mode of AF. I recommend everybody reads the 600+ page manual inside out ;) and also upgrades to 1.4 firmware. 1.6 is out now but no earth shattering updates. Lastly, customise all controls to maximise your efficiency! PS: AF accuracy is exceptional Canon R - www.imaging-resource.com/news/2018/09/15/canon-eos-r-qa-with-the-canon-engineers

      For about 2000$ for indoor and outdoor you could choose from R7 and R6. R6 will be better indoor (lower noise), R7 outdoors (crop factor, more mpx so you can even crop more). It also depends on your lensens, because on R6 70-200 would be great indoors, but outdoors you would need sth like 100-400 4.5-5.6. With R7 indoors you could use even 24-70 2.8/ lens and 70-200 2.8 - and outdoors 70-200 2.8 will do the job.

    Why does Canon seem to favour grips with that ungainly proboscis? I use Canon and Olympus gear (mostly Olympus, now). My OM-D E-M1 has a grip that simply screws on without any need to fiddle with the battery cover or remove the existing battery from the battery compartment. It works perfectly well and is extremely convenient. I was intrigued by the EOS R, but little things like that grip and that touch panel on the back have left me questioning some of Canon's design decisions.
    Unfortunately, I live in a remote part of the world where trying these out before buying isn't really an option, hence the questions. In the video, you spoke about performance in the focusing, handling and image departments, but what about those interface and mechanical considerations? I would be intrigued to hear your take on those.

    Peter, Sounds to me you are overrating this camera for sports and being way too nice to Canon for their introductory pro-like camera for the consumer. As a Canon user, I agree it's a nice camera, but not going too far beyond that. I am a sports photographer too, and 5 fps simply will not due with a small buffer size in RAW. A big negative is the temp blackout in the viewfinder, you mentioned, and that is a big no-no for an electronic shutter, unless shooting mechanical. You did not mention memory card usage or talk about the ISO range. and all the photos you showed were in daylight. How about some nighttime photos, especially at high school fields or inside gyms. Overall, I tend to rate this camera as a nice consumer version using the RG 24-105 lens. What most sports photographers, at least me, want to have is a Canon mirrorless camera shaped like the 1DX2 body having faster FPS performance, improved ISO sensor performance, and dual CFast cards. Maybe soon.....for now, the Canon R will not be on my want list.

    You compared it to “back in the day” cameras. This is suppose to be the future, not a half assed attempt to enter into the mirrorless market (for the second time - the M50 was their first).
    They can do better, it’s Canon we are talking about!
    If you want mirrorless full frame then the Sony cameras are the way to go until Nikon and Canon step up and produce what they promised.
