You may have noticed that I spelled “square off” incorrectly. The Exceptional American is a terrible speller, and I was still in character during the editing process.
The Yamaha by a lug nut over the Ludwig. I have the Black Beauty and a Yamaha Steve Gadd Signature. Both are great sounding drums but imo the snares on the Yamaha sound like the old school Supraphonics. .
Suggest to hide which snare is which, people could judge by the sound as first criteria and not get influenced by the brand name...also will be more interesting to participate (:
I've gotta go with the Tama here - it's got a great bark, a pure sound from the snare wires, and almost even more importantly, it sounds like it'd be easier to record/mix.
I was surprised to find the Yamaha as my favorite, followed by the Ludwig, then DW, then Tama. There’s a bright presence to the yammie that I really liked, plus I like a bit more snare activity, it seems a very responsive drum.
Tama SLP does it for me! I think it comes stock with 42 strand wires, but that’s beside the point. This drumble is going to difficult, all of the snares sound great!!!
Tama. It seems to do a little bit of everything. I watched this video a bunch of times - the DW stood out at first as perfect for heavy genres. The overtones are great, and can be muffled if need be. But the other drums have a better rim shot. The Ludwig has the fattest backbeat and was my second pick. It sounds very smooth. It would be an amazing workhorse at any tuning, but I really don't tune low, and I liked the Tama's high tuning more. As an audio engineer, I love the RC. As a drummer, it's not my first choice. The Tama bridges all of the gaps. It has "boing" and it has a fat backbeat. It would probably record well too.
For me, it's 1. Yamaha RC, 2. Ludwig, 3. Tama & 4. DW. I recently bought 14x5,5 Yamaha Brass Recording Custom and it has controlled overtones like in this 14x6,5.
I too thought the DW had the best "tone". But at the higher tuning I thought it was a bit "thin" sounding. So I defalted to the Yamaha. But it was close!
That Yamaha sounds really nice, but for me the Ludwig Striped Brass is the best. Just seems to stand out more with it's sound, both in low and high tunings
Tama Only because at one point, Matt Nicholls of Bring Me the Horizon was using one, and as a fellow Exceptional American, my opinions are largely informed by people I admire.
It's the Ludwig for me, but only just! I've got a brass Ludwig (14*5 brass phonic) and a recording custom brass (13*6.5) and they're both amazing. Sound quite similar actually, but there's something indefinable about the Ludwig snare sound that always gives me goosebumps, so it's that one for me. The DW is a little dry and cold for my taste, but what do I know? Still sounds good and I'll bet it's lovely to play. SLP is a great sounding snare and I'll bet it's the best value for money 🤑
I know this is late but I just watched this video now. Lower tuning: 1. DW Performance 2. Tama SLP 3. Ludwig 4. Yamaha Higher tuning: 1. Ludwig 2. Tama 3. DW 4. Yamaha Overall winner for me is Ludwig. I’m a Noble and Cooley guy normally if I had to choose one brand.
I know Ludwig is a safe popular choice, but my heart has to go to the Tama SLP Black Brass. I have an older Tama Metalworks 6.5x14 Special Edition with the black die cast hoops and black hardware and it's a sexy beast for short money.
They are of course all nice but for me, the Yamaha had nicer overtones and the fattest and best balanced sound. Although how the drum “feels” has a part to play.
All are great but if I need to choose, for me personaly: 1) Yamaha for it's perfect timbre and versality, good in both low and high tunings- some ring that you can muffle if you'd like but not too much, nice texture and depth, rich sound 2) Ludwig - great at low tuning, lacking some character and depth in higher tuning 3) DW - Nice sound, but little "canny" - not too much texture in the sound 4) Tama - Nice, but too muffled to my ear, for some very speciffic needs
They all sound great, really, BUT the Ludwig had something special. The ring was most pleasant, and the attack sounded both squishy and sensitive and aggressive and “snarey” all at the same time! I want to hit it!👍🏻
Listen brother! To me, ringing snare drums sound like some jabroni strumming on an out of tune guitar! Putting that aside, I’d go with the Yamaha. I didn’t feel like clotheslining everyone when I heard it. 😂
I like the Ludwig the best. DW is my 2nd favorite, but the attack was more muted, and the ring had more sustain. Both had a nice sound, but the Ludwig takes my vote. Plus, the Ludwig was the best looking.
You may have noticed that I spelled “square off” incorrectly. The Exceptional American is a terrible speller, and I was still in character during the editing process.
Sometimes it's hip to be square Adam
It’s kool I new it was kayfabe. Wee fergive yu
@@jermss_preesh
he'll ya borther!
Well, you said you were a drummer. Right?
The Yamaha is the winner for me, but the Ludwig is so close!
The Ludwig here. They’re all great drums of course, but I think the Ludwig has the most complex sound, yet consistent across tunings and microphones.
Agree.... with the DW second... the DW almost has too much of the goods the Ludwig has.
1. Yamaha
2. DW
3. TAMA
4. Ludwig
Hmm weird as I think Yamaha and Ludwig sound almost the same.
The Ludwig has the most identifiable sound. It just has that certain something that I love.
JE NE SAIS QUOI Per Webster "is something such as an appealing quality that cannot be adequately described or expressed. Yep, that's the Ludwig Sound.
The best one to me is the yamaha brass snare drum
I just bought one off Craigslist basically brand new for 280 from a dude
All 4 sound fantastic. However, I'm throwing my vote for that DW!
You guys are true DRUMMERTAINMENT!
The TAMA SLP is my choice, definitely the best sounding one.
1. Ludwig
2. Tama
3. Yamaha
4. DW
Tama SLP with honorable mention for the Yamaha.
Yamaha
The Yamaha has the most balanced tone and is like a snare sample all on its own
The Tama takes second for me
Love them all though
Tough one. I like the tama best then tied between luddy and RC.
I have to go with the Striped Bass, I mean striped brass. I really need to get out on the lake.
Ludwig (but the Yamaha is a close second).
+1 for Ludwig!
Tama my friends!
Ludwig for the win.
Ludwig
1. Ludwig
2. SLP
3. Yamaha
4. DW
Loved the TAMA SLP! Definitely my vote considering I’m a Ludwig snob
eww!
The Yamaha by a lug nut over the Ludwig. I have the Black Beauty and a Yamaha Steve Gadd Signature. Both are great sounding drums but imo the snares on the Yamaha sound like the old school Supraphonics. .
The Tama SLP sounded the best to me, but honorable mention to Ludwig for sounding great and being the best-looking!
Yamaha deff sounds best.
💯
Ludwig. It's going to be hard to unseat a Ludwig snare drum in sound & popularity.
Yamaha RC by a nose over the Ludwig, then DW and SLP. I's so tough and all sound great, but the SLP speaks less than the other 3.
The clear winner is Adam’s romper 😂 ….. the Ludwig snare coming in a distant second place!!!!
The Yamaha for sure, works in every tuning😮💨😮💨😮💨
My choice too. Ludwig too "boxey" at low tuning. DW too "thin" at high tuning.
Yamaha!
Yamaha for me. The Ludwig looks great.
They all sound great but for my ear and money I give the edge to Yamaha
Yamaha all the way.
I vote for the Tama, though by scrolling, I know I'm not in the majority...all good though
I gotta go with the Yamaha. They're all hecken nice but the Yamaha has a nice complex crack with some depth that is appealing to my ear.
Suggest to hide which snare is which, people could judge by the sound as first criteria and not get influenced by the brand name...also will be more interesting to participate (:
This is a great idea, and may do it in later rounds...
Tama SLP
Just great drums.
Close Second for me the Ludwig Supra, but all sounded great.
By the way that Sonor Bass goes Boom sounding huge💪🏾
I've gotta go with the Tama here - it's got a great bark, a pure sound from the snare wires, and almost even more importantly, it sounds like it'd be easier to record/mix.
I was surprised to find the Yamaha as my favorite, followed by the Ludwig, then DW, then Tama. There’s a bright presence to the yammie that I really liked, plus I like a bit more snare activity, it seems a very responsive drum.
DW wins it for me,, 👍🌟😎🌟👍
Tama SLP does it for me! I think it comes stock with 42 strand wires, but that’s beside the point. This drumble is going to difficult, all of the snares sound great!!!
Tama for the win! Love the richness!
TAMA SLP Black Brass 👌🏼🖤
Yamaha
The Ludwig raw stripes !!! Btw Jim Duggan rules !!!!!
I'm a DW guy through and through........ the Ludwig is actually insane..... Ludwig for this round for sure
Tama has my vote Ludwig 2nd
Shout out to you for being an audio engineer. 🤘🏽
1 Ludwig
2 Tama
3 Yamaha
4 DW
Until you get to the Canopus Brass bell Magnum. Then all bets are off.
I vote for the Tama SLP! I love how that sounds!
TAMA Black Brass for me. They are all nice, hard to choose.
The carpenter shouts for the USA the great country but when aiming for the best drumsound we have to go to the far east. Yamaha for the next round.
For me, it's 1. Yamaha RC, 2. Ludwig, 3. Tama & 4. DW. I recently bought 14x5,5 Yamaha Brass Recording Custom and it has controlled overtones like in this 14x6,5.
Tama are the best.🤟
Tama SLP Series Black Brass Snare Drum 14x6.5
Yamaha Brass RC - but I must say that new Ludwig Stripped Bass (oh, Brass) looks fabulous.
Tama guy here but the aftertone on the DW wins it for me. Thanks DCP!
I too thought the DW had the best "tone". But at the higher tuning I thought it was a bit "thin" sounding. So I defalted to the Yamaha. But it was close!
Tama SLP Black Brass sounds the best to my ears.
My vote goes to Tama SLP.
I like the Tama. It seems to have the most even frequency spread.
Yamaha has my vote. Very tough call though, they were all good
And be sure to ask the CEO how much he loves Ludwig's speed King pedals😅😊😅😅😅
Ludwig striped brass has my vote. My 2nd choice would be the Tama SLP.
I love the Tama black brass
The TAMA SLP Black Brass.
The Tama is my favorite. The other 3 sound too similar to me.
Gimme that Yamaha 🔥
The Tama SLP sounds the best to my ears.
I like the DW. Nice focused sound. Good for studio work.
Tama SLP is giving Bell Brass realness!
That Yamaha sounds really nice, but for me the Ludwig Striped Brass is the best. Just seems to stand out more with it's sound, both in low and high tunings
I love Tama, but the low tuning of the Ludwig!
Second time listening and still Yamaha. Best Tonk!!!!
This is dope! My Vote is the tama slp black brass. Beautiful sounding drum.
The Tama one for sure!
You beautiful dingdongs exemplify what life is all about: having passions and being silly.
I love it so much.
Ludwig. No doubt. Although the SLP was nice.
Hell! They all sound good
Tama
Only because at one point, Matt Nicholls of Bring Me the Horizon was using one, and as a fellow Exceptional American, my opinions are largely informed by people I admire.
Yamaha

I know this is late but I just watched this video now.
Lower tuning:
1. DW Performance
2. Tama SLP
3. Ludwig
4. Yamaha
Higher tuning:
1. Ludwig
2. Tama
3. DW
4. Yamaha
Overall winner for me is Ludwig. I’m a Noble and Cooley guy normally if I had to choose one brand.
Yamaha wins. Just needs a moonjel!😂
The definition of top shelf retail! DCP = 💯
Ludwig supraphonic wins. Tama sounds great too. Least preferred was DW
Lower tuning: ludwig, higher tuning: slp
How am I supposed to count this vote
:)) ludwig
I know Ludwig is a safe popular choice, but my heart has to go to the Tama SLP Black Brass. I have an older Tama Metalworks 6.5x14 Special Edition with the black die cast hoops and black hardware and it's a sexy beast for short money.
1) Yamaha, 2) Ludwig, 3) Tama, 4) DW. Context: I own Ludwig and Tama snares, but the Yamaha sounded best to me.
They are of course all nice but for me, the Yamaha had nicer overtones and the fattest and best balanced sound. Although how the drum “feels” has a part to play.
Agree. The Yamaha sat right in between the ludwig and DW for me. Ludwig too "boxey" at lower tuning, DW too "thin" at higher tuning.
Yamaha is the winner for me. They all sounds good but the flange hoops on the Yamaha sounds amazing 🤩.
Soundwise, either the Ludwig or Tama with maybe a slight edge to the Ludwig. Looks wide, Ludwig.
🤔 Man, very hard to choose, they all sound killer. My vote goes for the Yamaha one, sounds thick, powerful and bright.
All are great but if I need to choose, for me personaly:
1) Yamaha for it's perfect timbre and versality, good in both low and high tunings- some ring that you can muffle if you'd like but not too much, nice texture and depth, rich sound
2) Ludwig - great at low tuning, lacking some character and depth in higher tuning
3) DW - Nice sound, but little "canny" - not too much texture in the sound
4) Tama - Nice, but too muffled to my ear, for some very speciffic needs
Tama SLP (Tempesta's signature) cheaper version.
I like the Yamaha the best. A little more open, probably because of the triple flange hoops against the die cast on the Ludwig.
I’d go with the Yamaha RC. It had the sound I’d prefer. It was close for all four.
yamaha has so much bottom end! very full-bodied. but ludwig is more snapy.
I like the Ludwig the best. DW is my 2nd favorite, but the attack was more muted, and the ring had more sustain. Both had a nice sound, but the Ludwig takes my vote. Plus, the Ludwig was the best looking.
