    On vocals is Greg Lake, who also played the bass & guitar. He was also the producer of their albums. He was in King Crimson prior to forming this supergroup with Keith Emerson from the Nice (Keyboards) & Carl Palmer - Crazy World of Arthur Brown & Atomic Rooster (drums).

    Glad to see you dip into prog, ELP was a supergroup Keith Emerson piano, organ & Moog synthesizer (from The Nice), Greg Lake bass, vocals & guitar (from King Crimson), Carl Palmer drums (from Crazy world of Arthur Brown & Atomic Rooster). I saw them twice, once in a college auditorium & then Carnegie Hall (they did two whole sets with a rest in between). Prog is the confluence of rock, classical, jazz mainly though I saw them slip into Rock N'Roll once. They were everything that fans loved & critics hated. Thanks for checking this out Saeed. Other Prog bands were Gentle Giant, (complex musical structure both in instrumentation & vocals), King Crimson (often thought to be the start of prog), Pink Floyd (started out psychedelic evolving into prog), Genesis (early albums before Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett left at different times, then they became a pop band), Caravan, Yes, Soft Machine (very much the jazz side). The list goes on, but prog was killed for the most part by Disco, punk & rock critics, only Pink Floyd & Yes had enough following for record companies to stick with them. Interestingly the 90's to present have Jam Bands (like Widespread Panic & Umphrey's McGee, though primarily rock use other musical forms like prog did), Electronic (Tangerine Dream), Tool & Polyphia (complex structures) to name a few that continue to push the rock & jazz based structures. This is by no means a comprehensive list.

    The cover was amazing. It was a gatefold cover, The lower circular part was a cut out, and the illustration around it was split down the middle. When you opened those two "wings", you exposed the painting on the inside, which was the whole face, an enigmatic woman with her eyes closed. The whole thing was painted by H.R. Giger, who was known for his strange "biomechanoid" paintings, which combined the human with the machine in a very disquieting, grimy, dark way. (He did the xenomorph and alien ship designs for Ridley Scott's "Alien" film.) This was a pretty light painting for him, as his stuff was usually nighmarish. But the "hair" you can see on either side of her face is actually made up of lines of bones like vertebrae, clearer when you see the whole picture. It really was a work of art, that cover. (Because LP's measured 12"x12", there was a lot of room for artistic experimentation; some covers were often framed and hung up on people's walls. Of course that's all gone now, sad to say.)

      Or has it? The resurgence of vinyl in recent years means the portal is open again (so to speak!).

    • @Serai3
      @Serai3 11 часов назад +1

      @@Llydrwydd Not much of a resurgence, and the artwork I've seen on new album covers is pretty shabby compared to what was being produced back then.

    • @Llydrwydd
      @Llydrwydd 3 часа назад

      @@Serai3 Maybe you're right, I'm not really buying LPs any more so haven't kept up with the current output and whether the cover artwork quality is there or not.
      I was lucky I suppose in that apart from the plethora of musical talent emerging (I'm talking mainly late 60s into the 70s) visual arists were given great freedom to express themselves on albums, in such diverse ways. It all added to the joy in actually buying then playing a record for the first time (on a turntable!).

    🎼🫖🎼🫖🎼 .. another amazingly talented band from the 70s. The radio stations of my youth had this type of song playing on multiple stations. Maybe I thought then that all artists could sing great , play instruments easily , and compose complex sings like it was nothing at all. I was wrong. These guys are so good, as you will discover Saeed. 🏔️🐎🏔️🐎🏔️🐎🏔️

    I went through elementary school and we learned about all the old composers and then I went into junior high (yeah, I'm old enough that it was before the whole middle school thing) and my 7th grade music class was learning our alma mater and listening to this album. It was some serious culture shock after 6 years of classical and folk music.

    Love ELP! Their productions are matchless. While they have some interesting live recordings, the studio versions are the result of a great deal of hard work and represent what they wanted audiences to hear. It was difficult to reproduce the effects and sounds of this song (for example) in a live setting at the time they were active.
