This is the perfect argument against using autotune and pitch correction. It's all about the human voice with its imperfections and emotions.
But just imagine if it sounded robotic... that would have been awesome in context of the show!! Your argument rejected! (I'm kidding of course, my soul score just went down a few hundred points.)
Trust me. Kids would probably hear this and argue it needs “modernisation” without actually realising that they want it to sound more robotic
Generations are now born into a world where the norm is autotune and the human voice sounding like a robot is their unquestionable reality
THIS performance will sound wrong to them even though it is pure beauty .

I was very impressed by the performance, not only that clearly she's not singing to playback, but she filled the performance and the role with a dynamism that didn't involve a monotone upper class voice and was a pleasant reminder that she is a very talented actor

In the video clip this performance was taken from, the character Michelle is portraying is attending her mother's funeral, and she sings her mother's favorite song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," in tribute to her mother.
Oh my! The emotion is palpable in this performance and the inflections in her voice add so much to the feeling. This is a very accurate and complete analysis of a natural voice and what it brings to music and performances, as a whole. Great job!! Chills with this one.

The late great baritone Jerome Hines described his wife (who retired from opera after they married) as a “singing actress” rather than an opera singer. Arguably a better description.
I like everything about this, including the seldom-heard intro to Rainbow.
Granted she is acting so she's staying in character but do I hear a little Patsy Cline quality with just a touch of that husky raw sound in her natural singing voice? Love to listen to singers sing without any accompaniment. The ability to just stand there and sing (in key) without any accompaniment sets the good singers apart from the great ones. This singing ability is typically found in natural born singers with a voice easy on the ear. So beautiful. Love no auto tune. She was acapella, and stayed on pitch the whole time. We used to drift off pitch when we sang acapella in my college choir.

She’s not off key, though. She’s pitching relative to where she started just fine and with a really nice tone. I’m surprised - it’s a lovely voice with great intonation

I don't know the part she played, the name of the show, and I didn't know she could sing.... without even seeing the scene or knowing the back story the high note right before "somewhere" hit me so hard I got chills and started crying.
I love seeing how much you enjoy the experience of music. I'm told that I have that same smile when watching magic performed well.

Yeah!! The producers finally got this one right. Will wonders ever cease. love the acapella, it leaves the artist to feel and control what she's singing all on her own...
Fil, I'm an amateur singer that sang through elementary, middle and high school and occassionally after that. I appreciate you putting this out and your explanation of note relationships is spot on. I have no idea how much vocal training Michelle has had but her sound is pleasingly natural, almost a style that doesn't follow convention. I'm recalling an instruction about it not being so much where you start but where you finish the note. (slides) I have performed the Star Spangled Banner (tough to sing) a cappella to crowds now and again and to me it's about singing the story or singing a poem. That works for me. I feel some of that here.

Omg, can't tell you how happy I am that you featured this. After watching the tv show episode where she performed it (and picking my jaw up off the floor) I immediately thought it would be great if you did an episode featuring it/her. I didn't expected you actually would. I checked your channel at the time though and discovered/watched your episode on Judy Garland's version; thanks for that one as well. One thing I would add regarding Dockery's version is she performed it 'a cappello' - no music accompaniment to help her find the notes, or bail her out... astonishing.
Both performances are amazing; both pull the listener in and cause them to lose all sense of time and space.

Hallelujah! Maybe this will start a trend. People are quite fickle in my experience. Ricky Nelson was booed when he tried singing new songs at MadisonSquare Gardens. Hence his song about that. I saw a videoed clip of Whitney Houston,near the end of her life, singing at some venue having difficulty, and she was booed or heckled. Women vocalists after menopause have to make adjustments to changes in their range. This is one reason important for people just to get together, play music, sing, and dance.

Michelle and a male actor from Downton Abbey formed a singing-songwriting duo a few years ago and have performed in clubs. She's so talented in so many ways. You should watch Downton!

It is a raw performance vocally and emotionally and conveys so much more feeling precisely for that.
She has a lovely, natural voice. This was a jaw dropping scene. She was a sort of derelict and most of the people at the funeral thought she was a massive screw up, so for her character to show up and then sing so heartfully and beautifully, was just so moving. Thanks for a great analysis of her vocal performance!

This is great! I watched Michelle when she performed for the Finch Stage School back in the 90s. I particularly remember her having a solo slot singing The Girl From Ipanema at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, Essex. Such a talent and she's made Chadwell Heath very proud!

Great Performance. Great Subject. Great Analysis. The directors and producers would have been idiots to take this emotional, natural, human voice and 'scrub' the emotion and humanity from it using pitch correction. It was practically perfect for the context, and better than a polished "professional singer" might have created.👍👍 However, it's not a 'disposable', mass-produced song. It demands attention, and human connection, unlike much of the musical 'audio wallpaper' "pumped out" by most platforms.

My understanding is that's more common in English tv, that they keep it all more real. Less makeup, showing wrinkles, so I'm not too surprised they didn't edit her voice. It's so refreshing.
I love unaccompanied singing; always so delightful. My husband says that I sing 1/4 tone sharp consistantly when I am unaccompanied since I don't have perfect pitch. It bugs him since he does! I respect that they left the performance organic because it was lovely and the environmental accoustics became part of the song. Beautiful.
Fil, I love the thorough approach you take in your analysis videos. You made a great point about Michelle's singing without having a musical reference point and still being able to remain accurate pitch-wise. The scene depicted Michelle's character being emotional due of her mother's death. So I'd be inclined to believe that a voice with emotions and imperfections would convince listeners--or because this is a TV show, viewers. Thanks for bringing your knowledge and objectivity to your music analyses, Fil!

The notes, slight pitchy or slightly flat doesn't matter... are all in context with each other when not pitch corrected.

Phil says maybe A 446Hz ("standard" tuning is A 440). I was guessing A448 but it doesnt matter. As he says, the intervals are what matters.
Middle C 256Hz was once a common standard and that would put A at 430Hz! Doesn't matter for unaccompanied singing. Very few people have "perfect pitch" which only means something relative to a defined pitch standard anyway.
Now I will go to the original clip and just sit back to enjoy the performance which I am sure I will.

I haven't seen the show or Downton Abbey either, but this woman has a really authentic and emotional thing going on with this rendition of Over the Rainbow. Wonderful!

I have to say that I enjoy your videos, particularly because I get the sense that when you point out technological manipulation, you're careful to say, in essence, "It isn't that these artists can't sing, it's just that their vocals have been so manipulated that we're not *allowed* to hear that they can sing..."

Thank you for this analysis! She really is stellar in so many ways. Singing off from the standard A440 frequencies but keeping relative pitches accurate while singing acapella is not unusual. In fact, only people with perfect pitch (a musician's nemesis, believe it or not) would hit those lines spot on. That's why acapella singers start with a pitch pipe or similar... to get everyone oriented to the same pitch.
I really enjoyed this analysis including this performance by Michelle. She has a very nice voice as well. 😊🎸🎵
One of my youthful best loved songs is "The Outlaws" "Green Grass and Hight Tides" as is Chicago's "Oh Thank You Great Spirit".
Mel Tormé, who sang with very precise pitch, would sometimes go into the audience and sing to a female audience member while looking her right in the eyes, and sing the last note of a well-known song off pitch on purpose to see her reaction.

This programme was brilliant, This Town was set in Birmingham in the 1970s, about characters with lots of problems trying to set up a band, Michelle's character was a recovering alcoholic which made the scene even more moving, great music throughout. on a completely different note Fil, have you listened to Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles duetting in Hyde park? Stevie 76 and Harry 30 singing live no auto tune just old and new singing brilliantly
Fil you must do an analysis of the Band "Smith" featuring Gayle McCormick on vocal. Her rendition of "baby It's You" rivals Linda Ronstadt's vocals.
Nothing pulls you out of the story like a scene in which a character is supposed to be singing live and it’s pitch corrected and compressed.

She did a really good job of putting that restrained-tears sound into her voice. I'm not familiar with her as an actress, but I'm curious if there are other unedited songs of hers out there where she's allowed to sing confidently, because I'm curious if *all* the waver is added for effect. I bet her normal voice is strong.
