This engines produces a very unique sound.. To me it sometimes sounds like a little 4 or 5 cyl and sometimes like a V6 or V8.. Heck! It even sounds like all of them at once! I love it.

Not just the manuals, the cars themselves too.
The automatic tiptronic transmission had a manual shift mode. Not nearly as fun as a real manual but the manual mode still gave you full control over shifts with engine breaking. The only thing it won't do is lug the motor or allow a money shift.
I have the same car but with a 1.8t. The b5.5s are all nearly identical

A twin turbocharged 5-7 litre W8 would be absolutely incredible in a Bugatti.
Was behind one on the way home yesterday and it sounded so good. Scooted past a minivan just so I could enjoy the sound better.
Dont forget, it is not a normal V8 engine......and so its with the sound also....but if this beauty is running, you will love it

Proud owner of a 6-Shifter since 3 months. Most ppl in my region didn´t even know that there is such a car from VW. I can tell you... priceless faces when you are standing at traffic lights or passing them. Best Situation was at McDonalds...when i came back to my car there was a little crowd inspecting it from all sides. >.> You want a car that nearly everyone will unterestimate when standing still? That car is the best to proof them wrong. ;)

One of the most underrated/under appreciated cars out there. The w8 with the right mufflers and exhaust can sound like a f430 scuderia! Heard both cars in person, and both can be indentical in sound!

Peeps, it's because it is a VR design, it's two VR4s technically which together make a W8 ❤️
So it's 8cyl or 12cyl? If it's eight is it laid out in two sets of four cyls (like a vr4 +2 extra cyls?) Or 4 sets of 2 cyl groupings? (Hence w8?)

@@_Peregrine_ Like all German cars they are great until they are not. A simple repair on a different car like an alternator, requires you to remove the bumper, radiator, and several fittings on a passat. It's taken up to 11 on the w8, since that same situation requires you to disconnect the water cooling on the alternator.
I ended up dumping my passats because I ran out of places to store them while I was repairing them.
Better to get a volvo with a b23 redblock.
@@Christopher-ix8ql Man when I hear this I'm glad I have my Golf Mk II, it's like playing with Lego's, most simple and intuitive car I've ever worked on. When you have a problem you can mostly figure it out by just having a look in the engine bay and the car will almost tell you "Here it is buddy"
I plan on a project car that is a a luxury two door four seater classic styled muscle car and I have been searching for years for the right engine to make for it and this inspired me to use this for it is absolutely amazing.
I love that raspy VR6 like W8, with 270 horses. Even with a quadtip exhaust.

Crank is what the hp is without the transmission losses, with losses is bhp.
It probably won't lose too much through the 6 speed manual, but the haldex surely eats a bunch of power.
@@laszlo_kovacs it doesn't have haldex. The b5 and b5.5 passats are based on an audi chassis and have a longitudinal engine layout as well as the actual audi quattro transmission. It is literally an a4 with a vw body on top of it.

How much rpms can they rev up to? Also does anybody make headers for these rare engines?
only 6500 but they were pretty long ass gears other than first. Magnaflow makes some headers but theyre 1500 a pop
@@TheStevenBateson If they are made from T304 stainless steel, then it's worth the price for someone who plans on keeping the car for decades. I went through 3 sets of mild steel headers on my Mustang. They just rust through so fast because of thermal condensation (Which is why you see water droplets coming out of most tailpipes especially in cold weather). BTW all 3 sets of mild steel headers I had were ceramic coated and they still rusted through. Badly. For those who live in drier climates like California or the Middle East, Mild steel will last 2-3 times longer compared to where I live next to the ocean.

Its really too bad they only made like 1500 a year for 4 years. dont ever get one unless you know its good. There are no parts really for this engine without getting them custom. VW/Audi stopped making them in 2004. I loved mine. ....even if it was just an N/A engine.

@@bradfruend3854 asking 3.5k. needs new vacuums and 1 window regulator for the driver side (which isnt a problem until ur at the Taco Bell drive thru at 2 am). Other than that the car is amazing. All electronics function, and it was built to able to thrive in Cold weather conditions. Seat warmers, 4motion all wheel drive, and triptonic transmission if you need to climb some hills. Best highway car I've ever driven and handles excellent around corners due to the 4 motion. I live in Costa Rica now it is just too expensive to bring and register the car here. lemme know if u have any specific questions.
