Is it pre or post vin split?
This W8 will need 2 new headlights costing more than the car
It's such a boomer thing to talk about an ugly color combo then being like it's only 2 of 400 😂 the M/T and the W8 is pretty cool tho
@@marcelk3847 Warum zwei neue Scheinwerfer??? Nur weil sie blind werden??? Scheiß egal dann werden sie zerlegt und wieder aufpoliert und dann wieder zusammen gesetzt und fertig!!!! Wo ist da das Problem????
Hey tfl, great video. But why would you walk with the length measurer for the second time all the way from the start?)))) All you had to do, was to measure the distance between the two cars.
I was a VW tech through the mid to late 2000s. The reliability of the W8 Passat wasn't the biggest issue, it was repairing it when it did break. Access to the engine and driveline in the front of the car is HORRIBLE. I remember watching a coworker go through dropping a W8 out multiple times due to a faulty oil pressure sender. The vehicle's owner was notoriously cheap and wanted us to replace the bad sender with a cheap aftermarket unit and our service manager caved and allowed it. The tech didn't want to go through all that without putting in a quality part. When the second aftermarket sender failed, requiring a third engine removal, he threatened to quit if he was forced to install another crappy sender. We put in a factory part and never saw the car again.
quality parts make the difference
As long as he was paying for labor 🤷🏽♂️
What about their V10 diesels? My mechanic begs me to sell my Phaeton, every time he returns the keys to me 😅
I had a v8 phaeton that the VW techs could never figure out how to align. They said it would be cheaper to buy new tires every 20000k than to buy the part they needed to align it. God I hated working with VW on that car.
Oh God, the Phaeton. Only certain dealerships were "Phaeton certified" and had the tooling needed to do everything to those cars. VAG treated the Audi R8 the same way. It was a bunch of money in tools and training the dealership had to pay for to be able to properly service a car they might never see. The dealership I worked for didn't buy into either program, but would still bring those cars in for service. We were an Audi/VW/Porsche/Jaguar store and the only extra model we were set up for was the Carrera GT, and there were exactly two of them in our service area.
You can’t beat the sound of those w8s!
@Billy Hamilton lol ok dude
The 12 cylinder Phaeton...
sounds like v6 with broken exhaust
Sounds like a 350z... That trumbone sound.
@Billy Hamilton it's so sad how some people will find anything to argue about.
Go hug someone who cares about you..
At sea level the w8 would be multiple car lengths ahead even on the roll race. Huge advantage with turbo at that elevation
Bingo
bro why? thats interesting
nvm bro i googled it, cheers
@@robsmith229 yea man its the one huge flaw with this channel is all the testing and races is done at a mile above sea-level supercharged cars, and naturally aspirated cars will always do worse than turbo cars at that elevation.
@@tylerspecht7553 Do the supercharged Cars also lose same power as NA ones?
The sound of 8 pistons screaming at full throttle is what's going to make most older cars worth alot in the near future.
Or the sensation that they give they don't gotta be fast take a first gen Mx5 for example. Looks feel and sound will win out over boring ordinary no noise no sensation cars
@@E_tiBEAMERBOY yes, I had a Ecoboost Mustang with a Ford Racing Tune, thing made 335hp-390trq and was quick for a 4banger. Sadly the engine sounds it made were not pleasing at all. My bone stock Corolla with 132hp sounds better revving than that Mustang did. I never understood why it couldn't sound like the SRT4s or Evos.
Now i drive a tuned 3v 4.6 V8 Sporttrac with magnaflows. This thing is slow (0-60 in 6.8sec) but the sound it makes especially in a tunnel is intoxicating.
The sound an engine makes is what gives the car its soul.
I'm so glad you guys are bringing out some of the obscure classics like that W8...
My god it's exhaust note is legendary lol
Since the b5.5 passat had a longitudinally mounted engine it meant it got the 4x4 drivetrain from Audi which used the torsen system. When a VW used a transverse mounted engine, it used a haldex system.
You know, in all the videos you've done where you talk about the difference of altitude and how forced induction helps so much, have you guys ever taken a naturally aspirated version of a vehicle versus a forced induction version of a similar vehicle and done comparison like this, both at sea level, and at altitude?
That would make for an interesting video....
That would be really hard to see, since very few (if any) vehicles offer engines of the same performance. The best bet would be a 6 Cylinder vs turbo 4 old vs new generations.
@@trevorbrown7224 you could take the vag 1.8 20v , they made those NA and turbo
Plenty of older 2.5L Subarus that were NA and had turbocharged variants with same body (Impreza/Legacy/Outback) would be interested in seeing that comparison living in Colorado myself.
@@fjdg94 I had a passat 20v and now have a a4 turbo 20v. There's definitely a difference on acceleration, but it peaks out and I reckon the passat is a better built car and more comfortable. I always thought of them being grandpa cars, but I want to get rid of the a4 and get bk in a passat
@@trevorbrown7224 do a 2015 and 2016 Honda CR-V. Same engine with and without a turbo, both all wheel drive.
The real world mpg of that 6spd jetta is insane. I got 47 mpg on the regular in my 2021 before I traded it. It was such a fun car.

I had a B5.5 with the 2.8 VR6, 4Motion GLX. I loved that thing, she just got too expensive to maintain. I love that car though. A lot of people don’t realize how good it really is.
The 2.8 in the B5 and B5.5 was a true, Audi-derived V6 though. :)
@@Retrotyp VR6 It’s a beautiful power plant but it’s actually VW, no?
My 1st car was a 2.8 VR6 B4. Loved that engine!
@@FunYl I wanted one as my first car but could not find one back then.
Now recently bought a B3 sedan and VR6-swapped it; Engine is a bliss indeed!
b5 didnt come with vr6 either a true v6 or vr5
Another interesting comparison would have been between the new Jetta and the MK4 Jetta with a 1.8T. I mean... both have just as much power. Quite curious on a comparison. I think they're pretty close in weight too.
Few years ago I bought w8 passat for 3500€. It was a project car. I was considering to use the car for a daily. Pain in the ass to work on the engine. Luckily in Europe vw parts are really cheap. So after investing 1500€ in parts and 100h of work I sold the car for 10k. The one thing that sold the car was the insane sound.
If I lived in the US I would bid for the Passat! Great content as usual guys. How all the tfl channels don’t have over a million subs is beyond me.
All 4motion B5/5.5 Passat's had proper full-time 4wd. B5 generation Passat was based on the Audi A4/A6 and so shared the same Quattro 4wd system. Haldex was used on smaller transverse engined VAG cars like the Golf/A3/TT
i thought they were awd. 4wd implies a transfer case. awd uses a transaxle. 4motion is awd. 4xmotion is full time 4wd as on my touareg.
The W8 Passat had a Torsen AWD system. Same as audi A6 Quattro. Very robust system
But massive drivetrain losses...
@@KingofInterns You don't care when it gets you trough a snow storm safe. One is a cheap entry car, the other was loaded and probably will last longer than that Jetta

@KingofInterns I hear ya. I daily drove my D3 Audi S8 with the V10 for 5 years. It was unstoppable. Even with 20" winter tires. Best car I ever owned
I had a 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8, and I don't know a lot about transmissions and all that but all I know was mine was great on slick or snow covered roads.
I love seeing VW content. Watched the whole video.
I have a ‘22 Jetta Sport. (Came from a c7 Vette) such great gas mileage on the Jetta. I was able to get 50.6 on my way to work at 70-75 mph. Small tank gave me 520 miles of range. Good job VW
The elevation killed the W8, I bet the difference would have been much more dramatic at sea level.
its a reason why at the time european cars did not have as much turbos since most of europe is at sea level compared to the states
Great video! That W8 sound is incredible. Love it.
As a VW guy: It was really cool that VW crammed big engines in these cars with the VR6 in the Golf/Jetta and the W8 in the Passat. It's similar to what Mercedes did with their V12 AMG models... the issue is having the space to do maintenance and repairs when something breaks which requires dropping the engine and sometimes the transmission.
The tight fit is an unfortunate compromise. But being able to get an 8 cylinder into the bay of a mid-size car was an incredible feat. These are just a few of the things the hater here don't recognize.
W8 Passat is still the coolest Passat ever made by far! Sounds so good! I had a 2003 2.8 5 spd was a fun car, but no comparison to a W8
Agreed. One of the only sedans I would ever consider adding to my garage
This and the R36!
So what is fun in a heavy, thirsty, slow car that has vague steering?
@@romka_ind it's just that it's cool man. It's a cool car. You may be very young, like under 22-23yo and can't get the concept of a rare, big-engined, special edition of a normal car. A car doesn't have to have 500hp and do the 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds, come on. If you think that, then you may not really be a car person.
If you are very young, then I understand you can't go back in time 15-20 years and immagine how cool it was seeing a boring Passat going by but soundign like a muscle car.
The idea of a cool car doesn't revolve just around horsepower and lap times. It's also about the rarity, and the way it makes you feel when just driving or seeing it going down the road.
@@romka_ind now I've seen that you actually follow car channel as well as the Grand Tour. It amazes me that you cannot find a W8 Passat at least a little bit interesting. Especially for what it meant for future development of their engines. But you do you.
The W8 is great, but I love my Jetta S with the 6-speed, a warranty and easily over 40 mpg. I do wish it sounded like the W8 though.
How is highway performance? I'm fixin' to get one. Premium gas?
@@kowalskikowalski8080 Regular 87 is all it needs.
Hello! Only 2359 cars were built in three years from the Passat W8. So this version is super rare for a modell from Volkswagen. With best regards from Germany! 😀
I love the sound of the W8. I drive it daily and would not give it away.
Thank you a lot for this episode, i'm watching from Brazil!
I had a 2003 6-speed. Got it new. Some MagnaFlow exhaust work and Wetterauer chip. It ran a 14.4 at sea level. It was a fun car. Are you sure that's Indigo Blue? It looks more like Pacific Blue, which was a W8-only color. My 2001 GLX was Indigo and my W8 was Pacific Blue. The VW touch up paint actually read Petrol Pearl Effekt.
I had mine for about 80,000 miles and it was relatively bulletproof. Other than typical for the day with German vehicles - fuel pump, a few window regulator clips, and the infamous W8 thermostat. I had no problem with the tensioners. But then again I maintain my vehicles differently than other people lol. It got its first oil change at 1,000 miles then every 5,000 miles as long as I owned it. In all honesty, of all the vehicles I've owned before and since my W8, it is the one I wish I kept. Even more rare were the six-speed W8 wagons. I think they only imported 96 if memory serves me.
If you are sad to let it go, then don't let it go.
BTW, little fun fact, the Jetta is not for sale in Germany/Europe, but they do have the Passat estate (only, and is very popular as Police car) and the only saloon is the Arteon which is basically a Passat with a different name and some more up market styling clues. It is kind of strange that the only VW saloon in the US is smaller than the only VW saloon in Europe.
You are right. Everyone on RUclips is always so sad to let it go but does it for content.
Interesting info! I honestly just don't drive it that much anymore and would love to see it go to someone that can appreciate it for how special it is.
and the passat estate is being dropped, so ive heard.
The Arteon has much more style and excitement than a Passat.

The first gen 1.8t in those b5.5 Passats was an amazing engine the were also mounted laterally. Added those Passats were made in Germany. If you serviced them with a good mechanic and used good parts they were super reliable cars.
The center headrest in the Passat is massive.
The Jetta Base Manual will be my next car. At first I wanted a Subaru Crosstrek manual but it was ridiculously slow.

They might be close at a mile above sea level, but how long are you willing to keep your foot in the loud pedal? I'd be willing to find the speed limiter in the W8.... many times.
I personally got a 13.8 second quarter mile (on track) at 101 mph in my 2013 3.7 liter manual Mustang. Factory 0 to 60 rated at 5.1 seconds. 99 percent of muscle cars from the 60's and 70's couldn't match those numbers in stock form. Where did you find that Passat with a manual?!?!?!
In the early 2000s.
They’re very rare in North America, in Europe manuals are still popular.
Comparing 270hp with 158hp!? REALLY?!
Your point? You can compare apples to oranges under the right conditions. I will admit this one was on the low scale of best comparisons. Pulling it together only in size.
Wouldn’t care if the Passat loose. Still a cool car, still want one. Great sound!
I wish I could buy that. Ever since I saw it back in the day on the channel I wanted. In high school I wanted one. So rare. Like a c4 Callaway corvette. I want this car for history, sound, and comfort. Those seats are amazing.
I feel like “A true Wolfsburg in sheep’s clothing” would have been a clever idiom.
I'd have expected a bigger difference with the brakes. Even if all the components in the W8 had been renewed, I'd have thought that the weight difference and more modern anti lock brake system would have made a huge difference.
I used to own a 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8. I wished to god I had a manual but instead I had the tiptronic automatic and it was still a freaking badass little car. I used to race other cars in my town all the time and there wasn't a whole lot of vehicles that were beating me in my passat lol. Fastest I've ever been was in that thing and I had it 155mph on I-40W between Knoxville and Harriman one time. That thing would fly. I've seen videos of these on the autobahn in Germany topping out about 175mph which is pretty wild. If only they could have made my passat a bit lighter it would have been even faster. Probably the favorite car I've ever owned. Maintenance on everything was pricey tho. God forbid something major happen to it cause even replacing a head light, brakes or anything was way more expensive than what I was used to. Even a oil change was pricey lol It holds like 9.2 quarts of oil. Loved those cars tho. Mine was stock and a beast. I' can only imagine doing some mods to it. Mine was Gold, had heated leather seats, rain sensors, had a bad ass factory stereo and a 5 disc changer(this thing had an amp in the trunk just for the factory speakers and it sounded nice. All around a really nice car and i got a steal on it at the time I purchased it).
My lowly '04 Passat TDI has wood and leather interior, as well.

While not a "sedan" per se, the Arteon is still available and a great car too! The 2022/23 Jetta has a 1.5T engine too.
Crazy, the W8 was slower than my B5.5 2004 1.8T 4Motion 5-Speed Passat sedan.
100% bone stock, not a single modification. It went a 16.54 at 83mph. That was at 3698FT DA.
That W8 makes such an interesting sound
I actually had one of these back in 2015. Felt a lot faster than what it was. The sound was great, it had a different intake . Was great in the snow
There's some kind of massive body lean to the back in the Passat B5 when you accelerate which makes you think you feel G's from acceleration when it's actually just very soft suspension. My friend had that car and thought he could take on other friend's bimmer after a ride in it he said "lol it barely moves, I'm gonna smoke you in my Passat"... he lost badly when they raced. The bimmer was much more stiff so you didn't feel that lean but in reality it's been faster.
@@beegxxc9832 That actually makes sense. I have a focus ST now. With around 300 hp. It's almost three seconds faster in the quarter, than the W8. Wouldn't even be a close race. It's a a four cylinder lol.
@@Mikefawbush Focus ST is an overkill to race a Passat B5. I think most of 180-200hp hatchbacks would do the job. The sound of W12 is still sick though. I'd like to take long trip in that car on the autobahn, that's what it's made for.
Awesome video and you guys are naturals on camera. You're exposing a lot of people to niche car culture! Good luck with selling!
its incredible how shitty that jetta sounds lol
20 years later and the passat is just fine, i have one (20V 1.8 Naturaly aspirated) and still goes like a charm with minor problems when new vw's in 2040 will have broken engines or the oil consumtion will be higher than gasolines 🤣🤣
I'm actually more impressed on the W8, not because of how special and how awesome it sounds, but because it is a 180,000 mile car what weighs 1000 pounds more and it's also an N/A at high altitude. That Passat is probably not putting out much more HP than that brand new Jetta and still beat it.
11:11 every 4motion passat b5 had torsen, not only the w8's
Love this. VW really did make some interesting, solid-feeling cars back then. All the sheet metal felt much thicker than the current VWs. The strut mounts on all their cars these days seem to transmit quite a bit more noise than the older designs I've found as well. I seem to hear expansion joints and tire tread noise much more noticeably on the newer cars than I do Mk4 and B5 era stuff.
Probably not the most reliable, but not as unreliable as the internet would have you believe. Part of the issue is when they do finally need something, they can be very labor-intensive to fix and being a low-production engine, it means the parts cost is also elevated. So, just expensive to fix, but not necessarily that it's super unreliable. It's just that when it needs repairs, it sticks out in your mind more because of the impact it's had on your wallet.
A manual-equipped W8 wagon is on my wish list to complete the 'Piech Trifecta' of VW branded vehicles I really want from the era.
Already own the V10 TDI powered Touareg, now just need to add a W12 Phaeton and the above-mentioned W8-powered manual wagon.
That Passat really sounds great
the b5/5.5 passat uses torsen like audi with longitudinal engines. the golf/jetta and a3/tt use the haldex, and i think from the b6 passat onward it also uses the haldex. so that 4 motion badge doesn't tell you anything, its just a brand.
High altitude really kills that power. I would pull 15.5 in 1/4 mile in my 1985.5 Porsche 944 in New Hampshire
There is definitely not enough of us W8 owners out here to offend! Best of luck with the sale
I bought a w8 wagon a month ago and I can not find engine parts for this thing lmao where do you find parts? Mine leaks from a line going to the oil cooler/filter housing from the engine driving me mad
@@sakou1237 thats the exclusuve thing about those, you don't
After driving a '22+ 6m/t Jetta w/ the newer 1.5T, I think VW has sandbagged the power numbers on that torquey little engine. It feels every bit as quick as Honda's 180ish HP 1.5turbo in the Civic touring. Simply amazing for a 'base' engine that can get upper 40'smpg hwyfuel economy for $22k.
