“It’s a heater, but as a byproduct produces some sound as well” 😂 There’s one of those “Janosisms” that immediately made me laugh aloud. Excellent vid. Thank you.
@@hoobsgroove How kind of you to say, Hoobs. What a nice gesture and comment. 🤗 Listen to what Janos says at 3:40 and you’ll realize what I’m talking about….😂 Got it?
@@hoobsgroove Yeah, man. No worries. I figured you honestly didn’t know what I was talking about, and I was obviously just quoting Janos. Ya gotta admit it was kinda funny with that enormous magnet on the back larger than the driver itself….Have a good one, Hoobs. 👍🔊😊🎶
@1:06 the price of $374 for the MAOP is per pair. Yes we wish the MAOP 7 was 2-3 db more efficient but at least it does not have serious anomalies in the response till around 8/10k. Off axis is still controlled (at least 15-20 deg off axis). One way around the very low sensitivity is to use a woofer or 2 below 200Hz to augment the bass and relieve the suspension of the MAOP. One driver you missed is the Tangband W4 1879. It’s price has recently jumped up (@ Parts Express) but it was under $100 per pair not long ago.
In order to be most authentical I bought the FE 103 NV, wich is the direct successor of Hiraga´s FE 103 Σ. Unfortunately it has a big hump-valley at 2K. It has the similar funny roundish center cap like the old version. Now I would consider the NV 108 EΣ, and I think it is possible to recess it into the baffle, I would machine a ring to make it flush. Pity the Markaudio have so bad efficiency, the "Alpair 6P A" with paper cone has a nice characteristic, as well as the "Alpair 12P" with 19cm cone.
Hi Jürgen, you made a good choice, there's an easy fix to the valley at 2kHz. I will talk about the 103NV and the fix ; ). (Hint: we are going to horn-load it! - - in a super simple way, no harder than regular build. ; )
108ez shows a good FR curves similarity from different angles. Like a point source. That must sound comfortable (when you tame 2-5kHz region). Of course modern Fostexes are far from past years models.
Hello Janos, Thank you so much for giving your insights on these drivers, and the LePetit! Although I don't comment much anymore (I watch on my TV instead of the phone,) I watch ALL of your awesome videos. I have used the FE126 for about 8 years, and am always delighted to listen to music through it. I noticed the Fostex 108-SS HP on the Madisound website, and was wondering if you had time to share your thoughts on that driver. I have tried the 108 Sigma (and some other 4-5" FR drivers) and thought that it was just "OK" compared to the FE126. Would this, or any of the Markaudio drivers like the MAOP or Alpair 7 be an upgrade for me? They all seem to be of lower efficiency, but perhaps more balanced. I am still using my DC 45 amp, and can use 2A3s in it now as well. Best Regards, Cory
@@realworldaudio Thanks! I will go for that then👍Just check; 40cm deep is at the bottom? And what height for the center of woofer(distance from bottom to woofer center)? Great videos, love it🤩🙌🙌🙌, Toby, Sweden
Hi, I have been watching all your videos (Great!) since we had this conversation and I have some some more Q's, I may not have understood all of your suggestions... But please give it a thought, I will be very thankful! 1. In building a voight pipe or folded Voight pipe; should all sides of the cabinet resonate or is the fron/back more rigid and sides resonating? Or the orher way; sides rigid and front/back resonating? 2. In a folded Voight pipe, as I got plans for from Cube Audio ( make the loudspeaker not so high...) the interior "pipe wall", should that also be real wood / plywood, or rigid(mdf)? 3. The opening, at the front bottom of the Voight Pipe; you suggested to me total VP height 210cm, width 28cm and depth 40cm, woofer at 95 cm. which is the optimal opening height (?) and what effect would a smaller/lower opening height have, and a bigger/higher opening height have? Best regards, Toby from Sweden
I was just thinking about expanding on this..... there's a duality to hearing.... conscious side and subconscious. Consciously we (not-so-young adult male population) hear only maybe 40Hz-13kHz or so at medium-loud volume, yet our subconsicous still registers the whole extended range... also, the subconscious 1Hz - 150kHz range can shrink down to 1Hz-16kHz or less, or just have huge gaps in it....

Found the same thing, the older Fostexes were better than most today.
@@ShutterNChill That's sad. These could be better materials: magnets, steel, paper, glue..

Why is it that you sometimes talk about our ability to hear up to 150kHz and sometimes you presume that some people can just hear up to say 10kHz 😊
