    • A Walk Along Blackhead... -~-
SS Nomadic is a former tender of the White Star Line, launched on 25 April 1911 in Belfast now on display in Belfast's Titanic Quarter. She was built to transfer passengers and mail to and from RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, and is the only White Star Line vessel in existence today.
Nomadic was one of two vessels commissioned by the White Star Line in 1910 to tender for their new ocean liners RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, which were too large to dock in Cherbourg harbour. She and her running mate SS Traffic ferried passengers, their baggage, mail and ship's supplies to and from large ocean liners moored offshore.
The keel of Nomadic was laid down in the Harland and Wolff shipyards, Belfast in 1910 (yard number 422). She was built on slipway No. 1 alongside RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, which were constructed on slipways 2 and 3 respectively. She was launched on 25 April 1911 and delivered to the White Star Line on the 27 May, following sea trials.
The ship is 230 feet (70 m) long overall and 37 feet (11 m) wide, with a gross registered tonnage of 1,273 tons. Propulsion was provided by two single-ended coal-fired boilers and two compound steam engines, each driving two triple bladed propellers of 7 feet (2.1 m) in diameter, which gave a service speed of 12 knots (14 mph; 22 km/h).
Nomadic is of steel construction, with steel frames, beams, bulkheads and riveted hull plating. She had four working decks with various hold spaces beneath. She could carry up to 1,000 passengers when fully loaded.
Passenger accommodation consisted of lower and upper deck passenger lounges and open deck areas on the bridge and flying bridge decks. The vessel was divided into first and second class passenger areas, with first class passengers enjoying the fore areas of the ship. A small area in the aft end of the lower deck was assigned for overspill of third-class passengers from SS Traffic.
Internally, Nomadic was fitted out to a similar standard as the liners Olympic and Titanic, which she was built to serve. As such, she had more luxuries than most tenders of her day, with cushioned benches, tables, porcelain water fountains, gender-specific bathrooms and a buffet bar. She contained ornate decorative joinery and plasterwork, particularly in the first class lounges of the ship.

thanks for sharing another great little vid - giving us a glimpse into the past - i find anything remotely related to Titanic and her sisters interesting, i learnt of Nomadic's existence a number of years back and how fantastic she has lasted this long, albeit had changes made to her, great to see her back in Belfast - Nomadic's restoration team have spent a lot of time and effort to get her looking close to as she did in her prime, so glad the floor was not overlooked, that must of cost a fortune to replicate - it's a shame there are no engines, my guess is efforts were made to keep her running with more cost effective adaptations - i especially like the effort made to have some human interaction with the waiter behind the bar - a nice touch - something that is becoming widely used on these type of exhibits and very worth the effort - i really must visit one day !

Thank you Pete for your comments. I also have an interest in all things Titanic related & ever since I heard that nomadic was coming back to Belfast, I followed her restoration patiently waiting to see her in all her glory. I wasn’t disappointed & it gives you the feeling of being on Titanic. Please check out my other videos, such as the Thompson dry dock, & titanic hotel for more Titanic related videos.

It was built alongside Titanic & built to the same design & similar luxurious finishes. It gave passengers a taste of what to expect aboard the Titanic & was often referred to as the mini Titanic.

Colin, I just found this. I was there in 2013 but I think she was as closed when I was there or at didn’t have enough time. I was bummed. Will have to visit next time. It’s the last living design by Thomas Andrews. ❤

You have to buy a ticket for titanic belfast now to gain access as it’s included in the ticket. Well worth a visit to step aboard a piece of white star history.

@@ColinM_RUclips That's good to know. My best friend and I are planning a trip for 2025 and what I really want is just more time to see everything I want to. It was a dream come true to visit the first time that I was trying to absorb it all but there's still so much Titanic stuff I missed. Especially all the Andrews memorials and history that I want to see.

@Brooke Davis Make sure to visit the Titanic Hotel to see the drawing rooms & where the s.o.s. Message was received. I made a video about it on my channel as well as other Titanic related videos if you haven’t seen them already. Do your research beforehand & I’m sure you’ll get to see it all, & you’ll have an amazing time!

Nomadic isn't complete. Where's her foremast? How come they never installed it? Sure masts are unnecessary even for tenders but at least include it so Nomadic looks complete

    • @ColinM_YouTube
      @ColinM_YouTube  5 лет назад +1

I agree, if you’re going to restore something it needs to be to original specification. My guess it was to do with costs & that it wasn’t included in the budget.

Hi Colin your so right when we were there in 2014 I understand they were hoping to raise around £65000 just for the mast, money was tight.

This shaky black white edit with the white stripes that trys to make the footage look old is kinda annoying.

      1. Skip forward the video
      2. Don’t watch it
