It’s worth a visit if you’re interested in Titanic, but make sure to visit Titanic Belfast Museum and also SS Nomadic which took passengers to board Titanic at Cherbourg. Also worth a visit is Totanic Hotel, which was the former HQ of Harland & Wolff & has many pictures & memorabilia of its former past. I have videos on SS Nomadic & Titanic Hotel if you haven’t seen them. Cheers Colin
My Grandfather was a Foreman Riveter on Titanic Archibald Victor Wightman .In 1990s I worked at Thompson Dock on Security duties on site ,not knowing anything about my Grandfather or of the history of were I was employed.Remember patrolling the site in early hours of morning it was very atmospheric experience.Thanks.😄
It’s great that you now know the history of your grandfather & the dock itself. I bet the site was atmospheric in early mornings & very quiet compared to its heyday!
What a lovely little video! I was born and raised nearby and watched many ships ships being launched here - The Southern Cross, The Canberra, Esso Ulidia and even the North Sea Rig Sea Quest; but the Titanic always makes me proud of the fact that she was built here in Belfast. I visit the site from time to time and always feel an overwheming sadness that this once-famous shipyard and its main environs are all but gone. Even the hundreds of "Yard" workers' houses that nestled only a few hundred yards away are no more. Early morning and evenings would see thousands and thousands of workers move like a sea of ants to and from the "Yard," blocking all other traffic for up to two or three hours each day. Throughout the nights - including the weekends - the hammering and chommering under the arclights could be heard all over the city as work continued unabated. Today, the H&W name lives on, albeit on a tiny scale - a last link to great industrial giant. Thank you for this little reminder.
So glad you liked it Reg. It’s especially nice to read comments like yours & being born & raised in Belfast you have seen a lot of changes to the area & a lot of ship launches, lucky you!!. There’s something about the Titanic story that has touched so many people from around the world, including myself.
@@ColinM_RUclips You're very welcome Colin. The last time I visited - about four years ago - I took a video from my helmet cam and uploaded it to YT. You may like to view it: Titanic Tour by motorcycle. My small tribute in a way, as I left Belfast & Holywood many years ago.

As far as I know, the shipyard is not abandoned. I think they work on oil rigs now, and other areas of the old shipyard are in use for other purposes these days. The pump house in this video now also houses a whiskey distillery for example. Although it’s not teeming with dockers these days, it’s more filled with tourists and used for recreational purposes.

She wasn't 259 meters long. She was actually 270m long. Maybe 269.1m 259 wasn't her official length. She is also small in today's world but if we saw her in person we'd realise that she is still big for us. Us humans are small compared to these ocean gods 😅😁
Titanic was the largest thing afloat when she was launched. They had to extend the dock to fit her in. By today’s standards she is tiny compared to the cruise ships of today.
It’s big and yes the entire ship fit in that. This was not the dock the ship was built in that was the dry dock where the fitting out process took place
This is on my bucket list to go see that dry dock.

Curious, if the stern or the bow of Titanic was near those stairs that you descended.
It was the stern of the ship nearest to the gate with the stairs

Yes, you are correct, my mistake.
It’s looks small that dock
Titanic fittted in that
Maybe she wasn’t as big as she looks

@@ColinM_RUclips I'd say Titanic is tiny compared to a cruise ship like a bodybuilder is tiny compared to a 800 lb fat ass. Lol
It’s big and yes the entire ship fit in that. This was not the dock the ship was built in that was the dry dock where the fitting out process took place
That’s correct. She was built on the slipways nearby (just outside of Titanic Belfast Museum) before moving to the dry dock to be fitted out.
