Neil Zaza is a phenomenal guitarist, very impressive while being completely pleasing to listen to in a melodic sense. I agree with the Satriani comparison in that sense. The album this song is off of is called Sing and he named it that because he wanted to make an instrumental guitar album where the guitar was the voice. And that lends to his compositions so well. Highly recommend him if you are into this type of music at all. The album Sing is a masterpiece. Can’t go wrong in his catalogue but I personally recommend Peach as one of my favourite guitar instrumental albums. Dig in, you’ll love it 👍🤘🤘

Omg Fil--this evaluation was so spot on, so heartfelt, so insightful and intuitive... Total immersion into that special state of mastery through Music, being one with the instrument ... Having experienced that firsthand, you nailed it. It is SO nice to hear someone elucidate so eloquently things I was feeling and knowing but could never have expressed with words in my early teens. And this particular video...! Wow! What a masterpiece! The melody is resplendent with joy and hope and happiness. It pulls you in! The backing musicians just disappear into the song, as they should, until they get the spotlight and shine on their own. I had never heard of this guitarist, but I will be watching now! I'm so thankful for the joy of being, the beneficiary of your passion for music. Thank you 💚👍☺🌹

So many people that have never heard of Neil. One of, if not the most underrated guitarists ever. If you ever have the opportunity to watch him in person, do it. Never heard of him until 5 years ago during an event at the Akron Civic. Wasn't even paying attention, didn't even know he was there on the stage and then he started playing "Go!". I started paying attention real quick! Have seen him twice since but I will never forget the first time; religious experience. One of few artists that sound better live than produced and recorded.

12:19, it reminded me of the early times my family went to the symphony. We all loved music and performing arts but in very different ways. On this occasion one of my cousins that stayed with us was out of town and of the baritone range horn players stayed with us as part of a university exchange program. It was '71 or '72 so I was around 7yrs. For the honor/privilege of supporting the arts by helping traveler/musicians do their passions we received tickets.
As I sat with my mum, I was overwhelmed by the combination of the composers pen, the conductors training and the horn players interpretation that I began crying. I felt the composers feelings. He had a broken heart. Later in the piece he felt better and so did I.
Sorry bout the rant but what Phil said reminded me of that quite strongly m

One of my personal favourite guitarists Similar to Satch, he can make you groove, rock, think, sing, smile or cry with a handful of notes. The 1976 Sunn Model T .. A wonderful beast .. I purchased it specifically for running a Synth through the amp as the amp did well with basses or guitars .. It was a general purpose amp .. It's voicing wasn't overly colored but it's presence knob could really change the flavor of the amp .. A truly overlooked amp for many years .. Many people shy'ed away from the amp because it was one of those amps that was just too loud when you put it in the sweet spot .. After you get the amp up to 6-8 the amp really opens up and becomes a beast .. With a Synth it makes the Synth not sound wimpy and thin .. It give such a great warmth to Synths that I have decided I will keep it ..

I once purchased a 1956 Fender Twin "Class A" amp .. It belonged to the lead guitar player of Herman's Hermits .. The amp had been used by him since 1967 when it was given as a gift to him by Jimi Hendrix .. The amp was called bubbles as when you brought the volume up to 6-8 it would yield bubbly overdrive that I have never heard before .. I was told about the amp and that it was in a box because the twin cabinet was in pieces .. I carefully removed what was left of the tweed and found a logo on ebay that matched the logo on the 56 because the chrome of the logo had come off .. The amp was sold to me for $2k .. I worked on fixing the cabinet for about a year until I learned I could block, glue and screw the corners so it would no longer be rickety and buzz .. After I was sure about the cabinet I found some Pre Rola 25W Celestion Speaker but ended up removing them and putting in Jensen H-130 that are very similar to the D-120F's .. These speakers are a little low mid scooped but with that amp it didn't matter .. There was a gear fest in Oakland CA I used to go to and I played the amp at volumes that make the amp stand out .. A gentleman from across the hanger made a bee line to me and asked if he could plug his guitar into it .. He had a 1959 strat that was strangely slightly bigger than most strat's .. It sounded incredible as you might imagine .. He then offered me $15k for the amp .. I said no, this was signed by Jimi and he looked and said okay $20k .. I said no .. But I was close to saying yes .. He then said to me I will give you $25k cash right now for the amp .. He said the amp was to be a birthday present for his son but he wasn't sure he was going to give it to him yet after playing the amp .. I sold the amp I had just finished putting the tweed on .. It was immaculate .. I went to great trouble removing the old face-plate and replacing it with one with a mirror polish .. Looking from the back you could easily see the amp was very old but from the front or sides, you couldn't tell .. He took me to the bank and I was given $25k cash .. The look on his face told me he got the better deal .. Out of all the amps I have ever owned, that 56 Class A twin was my favorite of all time .. No other amp I have ever hears sounded better than the OD in that amp .. Bubbles .. Most amps have hair in the OD signal .. Some have short soft hair but nothing like bubbles .. Inside the cabinet underneath the Jimi signature was "bubbles" that was also written by Jimi .. I think Jimi had a soft spot for the amp .. I was told that Herman's Hermits early recordings were with bubbles .. My amp builder friend said that the band had played in clubs in Los Vegas for many years and they finally went home to Merry Old .. My friend made a number of attempts at getting in touch with the bands lead guitar player but he was never able to .. I don't know where the amp is today .. I sold it about 15 years ago ..
If you ever come across a 56 Class A twin .. Buy it ! .. In the second half of 56 Leo Fender stopped making the Class A amp vieing for a push pull amp .. I have heard a 58 Push Pull Twin and it has hair in the OD not bubbles .. The reason why Leo changed his mind was that people said their tubes only lasted about 6 months because they ran hotter .. So Leo just did what the market demanded .. What a mistake .. This why I have several cathode biased Class A amps ..

Very nice selection. I've been a fan of Neil's for almost 20 years, starting with his album Staring at the Sun. It has a fantastic instrumental cover of Purple Rain on it that I'm sure even Prince would've appreciated.

It really is all about melody and vibrato as you point out. Make it sing. That's something I've developed on my on playing. I remember when Yingway Malmsteen came out, he's still frickin amazing!! However I'd rather listen to Clapton make music all day any day!

Phil .. I love the psychodelica that few bands play .. A Swedish Band Called Plankton is an amazing band that challenges the norm and peals away at the fabric of reality .. I find myself removed from my banality and uplifted by rare music ..
Flyin Ryan Brothers "Under The Influence" .. Another Wow moment for me .. I like how this band "Owns it" .. This isn't just rehash of baggage and trash .. This is the feel of a new path ..
UNIVERSAL HIPPIES: "Mother Nature Blues" .. I must be a hippie .. This groves me so deep so I just go with it and the prickly hairs on the back of my neck stick up .. So much emotion ..

Is there a video of it? I only have found audio versions. That whole concert was great, and I have seen some critics call it the best live album. Wait a minute, after watching this channel since he was under 20,000 subs, I can call myself a critic. And yes, it is one of the best live albums for pure raw energy.

Hi, love hearing what you have to say. You are probably familiar with this guitarist but you may not be familiar with this performance. If I remember correctly, he was told when he was younger that he would never be able to play classical pieces on guitar that were played on piano. It may have been Bach specifically. So he had a guitar built that would do just that. This is a short piece but the ending is something special: ruclips.net/video/LEyqcYW-HjE/видео.html

Hey Fil, always a pleasure seeing u. Don’t u love the scales. Sounds a lot like Satriani...I just love what u can do know ur scales and theory...I remember all the equipment I use to carry around dbl stack 100 wt Marshall’s JCM’s and Boss Pedals and rack mount midi and of course an attenuator and so much more...now ....all gone! Isn’t this awesome. Yeah , got to be careful with delay...have u ever played through a echo-plex? Yeah u and I think a lot alike. I write and have written so many instrumentals. And yep he sounds a lot like Satriani. It’s all about melody...tasteful melody...yeah I never stayed on a fancy technique. Use it a cpl times and move on.

In the UK all you have to do is send yourself your music on a CD with the lyrics and make it recorded delivery. So there is a time and date stamp for that package logged in the mail system. It proves it is your work. Also having the original ideas and audio files on your computer is strong evidence. I think once you have these, you can perform your music safely online, unless someone else actually owns the rights to your music, meaning you have singed over those rights in a contract.

Like the musicality, no over tapping or wringing a whammy bar. You can still hear the guitar sound without over driven compression. Sounds like cliffs of Dover and some long hours watching/learning Satriani. The problem with these instrumentalists is / are the guitar is over focused, no vocals and relies on all the emotional content. No wind instruments no brass, bongo`s no killer dialogue with the audience and if played the same no one will remember that individual show. Lyrics make you think about the world and your place and others place in it.

I know you are always saying that it's twice as hard to play and sing at the same time, and of course this takes developing the skill of seemingly splitting your concentration, (actually shifting it rapidly back and forth), but I think that genres of purely instrumental music are just as valid forms of expression. In the heydays of classical and jazz, the audiences didn't need lyrics to get an emotional payoff from music. I don't believe that Jack Black is twice as good a musician as Guthrie Govan, or Wes Montgomery, or Yo-Yo Ma, or any jazz piano player just because he plays and sings at the same time. If you didn't already have guitar playing under your belt when you took up singing, and learned them simultaneously, would you be as good a guitarist as you are now ? Frank Marino talked about learning to sing, but he had to do that because of the genre of music he wanted to play, not because it's the only valid type of music. If Jeff Beck had a great singing voice, imagine how big a star he would be, but would he be twice as good a musician ? Do you want your heart operation performed by your family doctor, or a specialist ? With instrumental music you don't have to agree with, or identify with the lyrical content to enjoy the music. That's the last you'll hear from me on this subject.

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  4 года назад +2

Yeah it's all about personal artistic direction and choice. I think personally, I know that my guitar practise almost stopped in favour of singing practise, as I wanted to be able to sing for my own music. So it's making sacrifices, there are only so many hours in the day and when you have a job as well those hours disappear. So it would be the case of just practising guitar 3 hours a day, or learn how to sing for 3 hours a day. I think this is the reason there are so few great vocalists with top technical ability on the fretboard. It tends to be great vocalists, with sufficient playing ability or great playing ability with sufficient vocals. Of course there are the rare exceptions to the rule, which I feature on the channel!

Hi Fil. I was wondering if you'd be willing to listen to some RUclips videos of my brothers band. They didn't make it, though they came close, but he put 3 of their songs on RUclips, just for fun. The music is from 1980. There's no guitar player, just bass, drums, keyboards and vocals.
I'd love to know what you think of their music.
