so wonderful that he puts these videos together for the senior community. What a handsome kind fellow with very good looking bare feet as well. Thanks for sharing.
Mr Harlow, you are the clearest presenter for advice on physio issues. I only follow you because of that. You are pitched at the pace, and you very pragmatic in outlook. You have done much for me. Thank you.
My physiotherapist had me doing all three of the exercises you recommended when I had plantar fasciitis and they worked great! After a few months of physio I was all better but a few years later I got plantar fasciitis again. After my second bout and another few months of physio, my physiotherapist advised to keep doing the leg stretch exercise against the wall regularly but in the shower. The warm water from the shower warms up the muscles and it makes the exercise easier. I've been doing that leg stretch exercise in the shower for several years now and have not had a return of my plantar fasciitis.
Do you know what helped me, the only thing really, is an orthotic arch support in my shoes. I buy them a half size bigger to slip in that insert. I don't use them much now, but when I feel my foot start to tighten up, in they go! It really did the trick. The balls and exercises didn't.
@@annespellberg7173 the same for me! I continue to always buy shoes and sandals with support for high arches to prevent reoccurrence. Although, sometimes I walk barefoot.
Calf raises are also an excellent exercise to strengthen the plantar fascia (if loaded appropriately of course) - see E3Rehab videos on plantar fascia pain. Also, if you perform it off a step or on a slant board, so you get a full stretch+2-3 second pause at the bottom, then it will essentially act as a loaded stretch as well. This has the advantage over static stretching in that the extra strength built over the long term will reduce the risk of your calves getting over-worked and thereby tightening, but static stretching has the advantage of being able to be performed much more frequently and without recovery constraints.
What a life saver! Have done the stretches for years. I am pain free. BUT still had some uncomfortable tightness under the feet. Grabbed two tennis balls and now roll them unter the feet twice a day. Already feel so much better. Thank you.
Hi HT physio. I love your videos. I'm so impressed that someone your age had taken the time to learn about difficulties that us older folk have with our bodies but also knows how to talk to to us: slowly and with clear instructions.
@@jjays8174I have relatives in their 90's. One is 96 and still very fit and active. She's still dancing even. I asked her what the secret is to be so healthy and active at her age. She said, 'don't stop moving'. She played sports and was a dancer her whole life. Mobility is everything.
Been seeing a PT for an extremely sore ankle and heel for weeks with limited success. Watched this video, did the calf stretch and golf ball roll to my foot and within 2 days my foot and ankle are 85% better! Canceling my PT sessions....... Thank you Will!!
Watching from Greece. Thank you for your videos they are great and much appreciated. I am 78yrs old had polio when I was 10 so needless to say have a lot of weakness in my legs so thank you again.
I recently had plantar fasciatis and changed my running shoes strengthened my calf muscles and toes and loved your video we don't think of our feet and how we are walking until they ache and force you to be aware❤
About 10 yrs ago , I started to have tightness, cramp and pain in soles of my feet . Saw podiatrist - he thought it was due to poor circulation , who sent me to a vascular surgeon , who did many tests and prescribed medication , which I could not tolerate . It is such a relief to know that my symptoms were due to tight calves , I intend to follow your advise, I am certain , I will get better. Thank you very much Dr Harlow, Keep up the good work. Greetings from Canada
Thanks Will, watching from South Africa...you explain things very well. Finding someone at your age helping us... I'm 70 yrs young ,just got a painful knee from nowhere? ...
I lost this video and have been searching for it. After 6 miles of hiking, I start getting a sharp and burning pain below my toes in my right foot. A short break helps but I’m definitely incorporating these exercises. I had plantar fasciitis years ago and it was awful.
You might find it helpful to get a proper biomechanical assessment from a specialist musculoskeletal podiatrist. They specialise in understanding hoot function in walking. Clearly something is going on in one foot but not the other. You may benefit from custom made insoles to correct the timing cycle of your gait. Please make sure you choose an HCPC registered professional with at least 5 years experience and who specialises in biomechanics! Good luck Francesca Barrow
I’ve been having problems with a sharp, burning pain in my right foot below my right little toe. Worse in the morning, then ok after I’ve walked on it a little bit and then if I walk too much it starts aching. At first when it was really bad and I couldn’t walk on it they thought it was a stress fracture and I wore a boot for three weeks after which it plateaued at the level I’m at now. Very frustrating.
Thanks, Will. I am a fit 98 y.o. - a lot of it due to your educational videos! I am on a very strict regiment. Appreciate everyting that you do. Okay, gotta run - I have 2 more sets of push-ups to do!
I’ve started to have problems with my feet and was wondering what to do. Your video came just at the right time. I’m going to try these exercises and see how I get on. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for all your advice. I am 80 and as an ex ballet dancer and ballroom I still do my bar work on most days and still have good strong feet. As I have been ill the last 3 weeks I have lost a bit of weight and lost muscle in my calves so I am doing your calf exercises together with bar work. Unfortunately I have scoliosis with a protruding spine and where a brace but with the result have a severe balance problem so now walk with a crutch or walker. I am wearing Skechers shoes which has helped me a lot
I ruptured my achilles 15 years ago and have had Plantar faciitis several times since. I am a regular hill walker and often carry heavy weights over several miles. I think this is what causes my foot problems. I am doing your exercises and hope it helps over time. Really interesting and well presented. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!!! It would help tremendously if we could see your feet in the first exercise as well. I’m sending this to my elderly relatives and sometimes it’s difficult for them to tell what’s being done 🩵✌🏽
Great video. I’m going to buy your book. I’ve looked at a couple of your videos. Your advice is so easy to incorporate into my schedule. Thank you so much,
Thank you so much! This is a big help. Recently I’ve had some foot pain exactly in that area and I was wondering if it was a stress fracture. Now I will try these three exercises to strengthen my foot! I’m so glad you have a book out. I’m interested!
Thank you very much! I have a bad left ankle it does not flex due to rheumatoid arthritis. So i walk on my tip toes whenever im not wearing shoes. Its been over 20 years and my foot is really tight. Thanks for the tips I really believe they will help release the tightness of my muscles.
Thanks alot for your 3 easy & practical exercises..I was having pain near my big toe and these exercises were very helpful..the pain has disappeared. Rightly said sometimes it's the wrong footwear that causes pain.God bless for your advice..
That golf ball routine, with a sock on a carpeted floor, gave me relief from a long term problem with plantar fasciitis in one foot. I went to the foot dr for months with that problem. He taped my foot and I was in every week to get new bandages. Its actually funny now because he got impatient with me because the problem persisted. One day I read about the golf ball thing (with a sock on) and bingo, that was the end of plantar fasciitis and the foot Dr. visits. I also wear birkenstock around the house for decades and I think those keep my feet happy.
I have issue with planter facis on side of my foot on one leg. I love to use harder object to massage the painful area of my foot. it's painful when i massage it but feel great after that. So much less pain after. Also the stretch is another great one. Very painful when stretch but feel so much beyter after. The 3rd tips u gave is truly a blessing. Will do it to strengthen my toes & foot!
I just across this and I am so grateful, for nearly a year now I have been having most of the symptoms you described. I am going to start the three exercises in the video now. Thank you so much.
Great instructions - thanks doc... A French friend gave me a great piece of info regarding Reflexology... Walk on hosepipe that's left loosely curled up on ground...
Hi Steve, my dad is 74 and severely arthritic especially his neck and knees. He saw a lovely physio and she gave him a whole routine. He works out with a ball and band every morning even though everything hurts, he feels better afterwards. I hope you enjoy making friends with your feet!
Thanks Will great information . I wish you would tell us why bare feet is not good because I do that as much as possible because I thought it was a good thing to do
I am retired physician, these videos are excellent, advice on healthy calf muscles and helping the plantar fasciitis with the soft ball is absolutely essential than having painful steroid injections, these to be honest do not work. As he says needs well fitting shoes and exercises. Thanks for sharing these tips for heathy walking.
1. Keep your calves flexible
2. Planter facia exercise with squash or golf ball
3. Strengthen feet muscles by grabbing towel with toes
Thank you!
Thanks 👍

Freeze water in a water bottle (making sure not filled completely as it will expand) and you get icing of the area as you roll under your foot !!
