    I really have a theory about why the 2% disappeared. How I do not know, but at the very moment, another person wished they would disappear, or go away. The fetus, the crying baby, Kevin's lover and Nora's family: her husband, not loving, being mean, the children getting on her nerves this very moment. All of them, in this very moment, were not wanted. Even if it was for only this short moment, these few seconds. Other people wanted them to not be there anymore.
    Nobody ever mentioned that or this idea.

      I agree, I had also thought this is where the series is going. Plus, the cult called "the guilty remnant" meaning the departure was the 98%'s fault.

    • @DaedalusR
      @DaedalusR 5 лет назад +22

      This was actually theorized by the characters in the show, i think it was kevin’s dad. But it can also be somewhat disproven by the fact that no one disappeared in Jarden despite many people being unhappy with each other. Also the fact that the departure was evenly spread over the whole earth and had no noticeable trends (which is what Nora tried to find in her occupation). And if it was ill feelings towards another, trends would exist, as some are more hated than other, like politicians or criminals. That’s the amazing part about the show, there’s always proof for, and against everything. This is embodied by the season 2&3 intro song “let the mystery be”. Everything is purposefully ambiguous.

    Awesome closing words. I couldn't agree more with what you are saying. Watching shows like the Leftovers always fills me with a certain feeling of optimism. Because no matter how bleak and scary the world may sometimes seem, if people are still coming together to create movies, music, books and tv shows (and of course to share and discuss them) it is a worthwhile place to explore.
    Watching The Leftovers together was a great journey. Thanks for the reviews, Chris!

    I'm going to miss the show and your reviews of it. Thanks for being such an insightful observer, and for remembering all the connections to past seasons that my tiny brain can't hold onto. The finale was a satisfying homage to the power of storytelling -- the stories we tell ourselves to make a painful world more tolerable, and how clinging too tightly to stories can make us suffer. Nora searches for absolute truth while Kevin is willing to believe in stories that are healing. Her story at the very end reminds me of the great hero's journey, like in the Iliad or Odyssey, the journey of being distracted by promises, delights or fables only to return home after arduous trials to realize that what you searched for was always in your grasp. And yet the journey, the story, must happen in order to gain the wisdom and insight. Thanks again.

    I am so glad i found your channel. During season one I watched 'what the flick'. I found their "reviews" too irritating though. Most of the time they sat there and laughed about it and you could tell they didn't respect it for what it was. However you Chris have dug deep into the philosophy and really highlighted all the hidden references. Knowing you were a fan of Lost made it clear that you were a fan of Lindelof. I love your insight and look forward to seeing your channel grow. All the best mate! :)

    You really need to give yourself credit for your analysis of this show. It's by far the best ever on the internet I have found and I have looked hard. This show has made me think hard about what truly makes life important and to focus on TRUTH being the basis for everything you bring into your life. It was so refreshing to find a review that didn't shy away from the obvious fact that faith has a lot if not everything to do with this show and that we are truly nothing but guests on this beautiful planet filled with mysteries and wonders we will never be able to fully comprehend. This show has taught me to walk a little slower through life and take my time and really soak things in and be thankful. Not try to give every single thing a definition and a reason. Thank you.

    I'm very glad that Laurie didn't die, after all. From a story telling perspective, I think it makes better sense for the evolution of her character; and I also think it helped provide a grounding force for Nora, which supports the choice she made in the end. Very in-depth review, on your part!

    • @dreamer2260

      Very much agree. I think the sense we got from her was actually a peace; and not a peace that was a denial of life or giving up either. So it makes complete sense, combined with her call to Jill, for her to consciously choose to finally deny her instincts to suicide and bury them once and for all.

    Bravo. You did a very good job this season, Chris. I thoroughly enjoyed all of your reviews.
    I do disagree with your opinion about Nora's story. I think she lied. Why? I couldn't tell you. Maybe she was guilty about changing her mind about going thorough with the process. Or, maybe it didn't work, and it really was a scam. But... The reason I don't believe her story is because she told Kevin that she didn't look for him because, "you (he) wouldn't believe (her) me."
    Kevin?!!! Kevin?!!! The guy who traveled to alternate worlds by drowning himself in bathtubs? The guy who got shot in the stomach and survived? The guy who put plastic bags on his head to see if he could die? THAT Kevin wouldn't believe her? Nah... I don't think so. He is probably the only person on earth other than Matt and Old Kevin that would TOTALLY believe her.
    I dunno. I loved the series. But, the end was good for me up until that line. It just didn't make sense, to me. (as if anything in Leftovers world did...) :D
    Great video. Looking forward to your next series.

    Chris...because I really liked your reviews about “The Leftovers”, and u are a cinemaniac, you might be interested in a tv show that Netflix will broadcast early next year in the United States. It’s the most expensive tv production in a foreign language so far and it was written and directed by three of the greatest German directors nowadays. And one of them u might heard of. It’s Tom Tykwer, who did “Cloud Atlas” or “Run Lola Run” .
    The tv show is called „Babylon Berlin“ - it’s separate in two seasons with eight episodes each. I just finished the first season of „Babylon Berlin“ and I am totally overwhelmed about storytelling, about the look and the intensity of the characters and can’t wait to start with season two next week. So yes, they produced already two seasons of this show.
    The story about an detective from Cologne is based in Berlin in the year 1929, weeks before Black Friday. The originale Story is from a novel written by Volker Kutscher. It’s not an one on one adaption from the originale script and they have created their own „Babylon Berlin world“ to be honest. But it’s pretty amazing what they finally have done with this pretty well written storyline.
    I hope u will take a sneak when this show is going to be online on Netflix. You will need maybe four episodes, but I hope you will like this show than as much as I do. To make you more curious about the show, here is the official UK trailer:

    Just binged and this. As a fun, touching show about how people deal with mystery it was great but like so many other great shows (Sopranos, Dexter, Mad Men, Lost) the ending failed. Plus, the show deposited all sorts of supernatural events on the viewer but never really resolved them one way or the other. Of course, the writers have that right but it just creates needless confusion and ambiguity in the finale. Again, if that's what they were going for...so be it. It would have been one of the greatest discoveries ever if Nora had actually "traveled" to the departed AND was able to "travel" back. What kind of person would keep this earth-shaking [pun intended] event a secret? Or, if it didn't happen, lie about it? What kind of supposedly sympathetic person does that? They wanted us to be joyous about their rekindled love at the end but between that and Kevin's ability to cheat death the whole journey seemed just silly. The music was fantastic though.

  • @jjones9916
    @jjones9916 7 лет назад

    There’s a lot of controversy on Nora’s story. It seems pretty split between people who believe her, those that think she’s lying to Kevin, and those that feel like it’s unbelievable story but they want to believe her. I believe I have found the smoking gun to prove that she, at the very least, didn’t chicken out. Like the entire show, it’s up to the viewer to interpret what is happening, and this is My interpretation of these 2 or 3 seconds. You can believe whatever you want, I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind for them. But, if you’re truly curious about whether or not she ‘went through” or not
    then you need to re-watch the chamber scene in the finale.
    Just as the fluid is about to fully engulf Nora's face, you see a very panicked look on her face and she screams something. Watching it live, I like a lot of people, I through I heard her screaming Stop! She doesn't. Change the settings to .75 speed and turn the volume all the way up. In the background, barely audible over all the mechanized noise, you can faintly hear Dr. Becker screaming something to Nora. I hear, "are you ready to go?!?!" You can actually see Nora's reaction to this as she is surprised to hear Dr. Becker and panicked that she now has to answer a question after she had been trying hard to hold her breath like they instructed her to do. She screams out " YES!" she screams YES. She went through people. If you come to grips with the notion that she did go through, then you have to believe at least most of her story was the truth because she is back.

    Hey Chris,
    This ending comes as a huge relief. I have blitzed all 3 seasons in the past 8 weeks, and religiously watched your review after each episode.
    The reason I say it's a huge relief is because I was shit scared of the possible outcome of Nora (a character and actress that I adore) being mutilated by radiation... thanks for that suggestion!
    None the less it was a very creative, dark idea and entirely believable. I had to really prepare myself to watch Episode 8 as I had been having nightmares about a very macabre ending.
    Thanks for your commitment to this show and others. I really hope you can get around to a round up of Better Call Saul Season 3!

    first let me say that the leftovers as lost did touched a part of me that is rarely breached
    my soul;.
    i eagerly watched the last episode as excited as i was sad; that the end was nigh =0)
    i cant say i was disappointed; because season 3, episode one;
    had told me Kevin was not a messiah or Jesus.
    i knew this because we see Nora at the end; deny knowing Kevin.
    this tells us there will not be a great flood of biblical proportions.
    so i wasn't disappointed; i would say more hmm?? unfulfilled.
    so i watched it again,
    then again;
    only at the third time of watching did i realize that just as in life;
    there are no complete answers and that life is joy/pain, sacrifice
    and most importantly of all, love;
    the leftovers is like the one that got away.
    the girl you tell yourself was the one;
    you make yourself believe that notion;
    even though it's ridiculous. just like Kevin Garvey
    searching all them years for Nora; no matter how emotionally detached she is from him.
    there are questions that should never be asked and that are never answered.
    that is the fun of life.
    update:
    on the 4th time of watching i realized how strong lindelhof magnetically pulls you towards the characters and vica/versa
    also that there is a 50;50 split between whether Nora passed through the machine or did not.
    but there is a small grey area between this theory; PURGATORY
    we had a similar situation with Damon lindelofs LOST;
    to start with Kevin barely knows anything about his or Nora's relationship when they meet for the first time.
    secondly there seems to be something really strange about kevins behavior in conversation with Nora; the smirks the little smiles there seems to be an emptiness behind his eyes.
    Kevin also mentions heart problems and that he had the big one?
    is this because of all the dunking in water over the years or
    did he indeed; have the big one and pass?
    the beads that were offered to Nora at the wedding.
    the beads that Nora almost arrogantly refused to wear.
    the beads of sin;
    that were placed on the goat that she in turn adopted;
    had she finally decided to take sin home with her?
    the sinful nun who was first exposed at the wedding.
    there are so many clues in this great episode but i will leave it to you to unearth them.
    and alas= the great Christopher Sunday. (David Gulpilil) (Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu)
    we know he possessed the song to bring the great flood,
    and this is why he was sacrificed;
    so Kevin Garvey senior would not be able to perform the last ritual.
    therefore saving humanity from extinction
    i'm just delighted Mr lindelhof decided to create
    another labyrinth for us to wander through just as he did with LOST
    and it also introduced me to a couple of amazing songs
    that never i had laid ears on;
    so thank you for the memories and hopefully many more to come;
    PS; my song is bring the rain;
    not stop it.

    I was not expecting answers about the Departure, but I am left confused as to why Kevin was shown to have the ability to come back from the dead....and all the David Burton stuff, the man from Australia who also had the ability to transcend death, but all of this had no resolution and no significance. Leaves me feeling like I was led up the garden path and ended up LOST.

    My biggest gripe with this episode was that Laurie didn't commit suicide. That may seem mean, but it completely takes away any emotional impact at the end of her Episode this season when she went scuba diving.

    Biggest reason I think Nora's story was true is this: She loved her brother. Why would she just exclude herself from his life, let him die slowly w/o family, and not go to his funeral? She wouldn't. Story was true.

    What a finale !! i decided To almost binge watch this season, and dont regret that. Six Feet Under series finale finally got some competition. Though not same kind of way to end the show yet it finds a way to conclude in a brillant way. I was stunned 4/5 of this épisode and finally i think its one of the best. I didn't see all the things you did ie; the representation of the sin in the beads and placing them on the towel holder, the goat walking free, I did get the doves coming home. So I want to thank you for our insights, they were illuminating. I think I was kinda focused on the relationship f Kevin and Nora, I have not had much luck in my relationships not that there are many but the few have not worked out and I believe now that I look for relationships to work in movies or shows because of mine not. 90 percent of the show centered around Kevin, and his "supernatural" abilities to speak with the dead, and to travel to purgatory. I get that many of the characters needed a "Jesus" figure to cling to. There were a lot of subtle hints given throughout the show to give credibility to his experiences, and to me it was a waste of time if there wasn't truth to it. If the experiences with Patty and all the other supernatural experiences really did happen, and weren't just metaphors, then what was the point? Anyone have any theories as to why he went through what he did, or how it could have tied into the Departure? I mean, when you look at Kevin's experiences, and compare them with Nora's, they contradict. Nora's experiences are on the scientific side, where Kevin's are on the spiritual side. He spoke with the dead, and Nora physically went to an alternate dimension for a period of time. If Nora was telling the truth, and it had nothing to do with God, then Kevin's experiences either didn't happen, or have nothing really to do with the Departure itself. I hope that made sense.

    If you watch the last episode once again, in 14th minute when she (Nora) was in the tank (the final moment), she took a deep breath, with her teeth showing. It looked like she was about to say the word 'Stop'. I mean that's how I would say it, if I want someone to stop immediately. I think she said the word during filming too, so the acting feels real, upto that point, even when their intention wasn't to show her saying the word.

    Thank you for the reviews, Chris. Your research and attention to detail is excellent.
    I said a few weeks back that I didn't think that it would come down to the Nora and Kevin relationship, but that's how things ended up, and the show handled it satisfactorily. I was totally happy with how it put the onus on Nora to accept that her family is gone and in Kevin's case, belief in her story. The truth or falsehood of it all doesn't matter, if she was able to finally let them go.
    I will make an effort to rewatch it from season 1 to the end again.

    @817michael 7 лет назад

    I think Nora was making up the story on the spot, just by the way her lines were delivered, especially the part about the scientist rebuilding his machine. It just seemed to me she was lying. All the small, seemingly reasonable details seemed like they were added to make you believe her whole story.

Everything has been of the highest quality. I'm really gonna miss this show and its characters, but I'm so grateful that I got to experience it. "It tills the soil of my soul". Well Chris, it was your *review* that got me crying! I only joined you & your thoughtful subscribers in the last few days and only finished watching, tonight, this absolutely terrific finale. I guess I didn't want to sob with the 16 year old? But I actually think, as he kept looking the other way, that he felt exactly the same! Considering the themes in Leftovers, it's ironic. It was beautiful and I felt *nourished* by the last scene, believing that we were given a peek into the world of the Departed more than I thought we'd ever see. Nora's ultimate realisation, that "they [the Departed] had lost so much more than us" was my light bulb moment and the pieces locked together like the Departure Machine with its clicks and whirrs.
    Nora's rebuttal of Kevin for lying came from her own understanding and perception of how she'd lived her life for the DSD; had been frightened of Kevin's experiences in Season 2 and had finally lied to him about coming to Australia. But Kevin had a similar journey. Having tried to fix other people: finding the song for Kevin snr; asking Grace's children about their shoes; and giving Evie a message, he had to leave this 'other' place for good and fix that which *could* be fixed: travelling in the 'real' world during his two week annual holiday looking for Nora (the long way round: I'm reminded of Doctor Who here!) and together discovering an honest love.
    I'm also reminded of Greek myths and how Homer recognises that beauty isn't always peaceful, but rather alarming: it sets our hearts running and challenges us to act. Beauty no matter how dazzling or youthful when wedded to something superficial will never be sufficient if it lacks truth. A beautiful tale with a message of hope and encouragement. I'm so glad to have found this great community ....about 8 months late!

    At some point the nun said: "It's just a nicer story". Couldn't that mean that what Nora said it's just a nicer story? I'm so confused on that.
    But I loved this series and these reviews, hope to find another great series with your reviews!

    • @kuhpunkt
      @kuhpunkt 7 лет назад +1

      Of course it could mean that. It could have just been a lie that Nora told.

    • @ChrisHartwell
      @ChrisHartwell  7 лет назад +2

      I didn't, in that moment, see Nora _accepting_ that sentiment. "Fairytales" had never brought her peace and I didn't think that that change in the end.
      I could also be completely wrong though and that debate is half the fun of this show!

    • @mobaby3367
      @mobaby3367 7 лет назад +1

      I don't think you are wrong, great review btw. I just find Nora's character to be perpetually angry and I don't think anything could bring her peace or make her feel happy before or after the departing.

    • @dreamer2260
      @dreamer2260 3 года назад

      @@ChrisHartwell Yes, you are completely right on this; people use what the nun said as a justification for the interpretation that Nora is lying, but it’s absolutely true that we see her insistence on the truth throughout this episode, which carries through, thematically, to her being sincere in the end and coming to a completion of her character arc.

    This was a beautiful review and interpretation of this episode. Thank you; the last couple of minutes, with your apt addition of Richter’s powerful score, actually brought me to tears. I feel very strongly and very much agree with your reasons for believing that Nora was telling the truth in this finale; it’s so important for the ultimate arcs and themes of the show, Nora’s and Kevin’s character, and their relationship together. Thanks again.

    I really like your reviews.
    But no way, her story was false. The whole point of the season are the stories we tell to move on and grow.
    Nora constantly wants Truth. She blames herself for her kids so she wants someone to tell her the truth of the departure to rinse her of it. She constantly battles peoples lies and wants to expose false stories/theories.
    Finally, her arc ends with her accepting that you can't find peace in other people, its in yourself. We tell ourselves stories to make sense of the world and move on. She finally accepts that. And that's the most hopeful ending we can have

    • @otleyltd6544
      @otleyltd6544 5 лет назад

      And also, the season showed us over and over that Nora was constantly telling the truth to Kevin, she was being completely open with him. The argument in the hotel was the most honest they'd been with each other. What she says on the plane about being in a co-dependant relationship was a snide Truth. The truth can sometimes bring more pain. Then the final scene is basically Nora flipping and finally telling a lie/story, and in that white lie you can be happy and move on (as long as the listener believes it).
      So sorry dude, I think you got it all wrong haha
