    Having the same sound on my 2016 Sonic 1.8L. Truth is my Sonic had multiple rattles; the right side engine mount was shot, changed all 3 of them. The sway bar links were shot, changed both sides with metal Moog links, oem were plastic😬. All that noise was semimasking this ticking sound.
    This video may prove to be the answer, saving me $$ and time.
    Thanks Brotha.

    My 2001 Lincoln Navigator periodically makes a "CLUNKING" noise when turning left or right
    (mostly right), usually when in 1st gear while pulling out of a parking spot, or when making a right turn onto a street from a Stop Sign.
    It can also barely accelerate when it happens, and we've had to have it towed.
    It feels like riding over a boulder!
    We've spent nearly $4000. on various repairs to try to fix the problem over the last year or so.
    The mechanic FINALLY exoerienced the "Clunking" situation for himself today, and said it was the Gear Box.
    What do you think?

    I had bought a 2010 jeep patriot and was told it needed the cv axles replaced. I drove it until my new ones came in and it was making this sound after a month of driving it then it would stop then the other day i was on my way home and i heard a different sound, almost like my tire was flat so i slowed down and started looking for a spot to pull over but as i started to slow down it went away so i started to speed up again and it came back, i made it to the house and jumped out to see what was going on and it wasn't my tires so i believe the axle finally gave, so now it's time to finally put the new ones in amd hopefully fixes the issue.

    • @ScottiesHobbies
      @ScottiesHobbies  2 года назад

      It is possible for that to happen. The tall tail sign of a bad CV shaft is a ripped boot with grease leaking out. You could have other issues such as a motor mount being bad, control arm bushing gone bad, or a ball joint going bad too, or even a bearing.
      I get this question quite often. Maybe today I will make a quick video on how to do to do a rough check on the bearings and ball joints.

    • @ScottiesHobbies
      @ScottiesHobbies  3 года назад

      Motor mounts? Pop the hood. Have some one hold the brake firmly. Switch gears from drive to reverse. Not to fast and do not hit the accelerate pedal. Watch the engine while shifting. See if the motor moves. It should stay pretty firm. If a mount is bad it should rock. Checking side mounts are a little harder to check but can usually be visually inspected.

      @@ScottiesHobbies so the mechanic looked at the engine as I shifted with the brake on... he said the amount of engine movement was normal. "there has to be some movement." I mentioned that another mechanic said it could be the motor mount and he said maybe but it wouldn't cause the differential to be out of alignment....
      He concluded that it was the differential. its a front wheel drive. He said that there is probably some erosion of the gears and at certain angles and speeds the increased amount of space between teeth causes the ratcheting sound.
      He said it wasnt the CV assembly.
      I looked online and saw quite a few people had problems with the transfer case. Basically it being too close to the exhaust dehydrates the grease in the transfer case and it becomes sludge... and or its not watertight and the gears rust...
      Those seemed to be mostly rear differential complaints. In nearly all the write ups it wasnt specified .
      But I looked at the transmission fluid and the mechanic did too. He said it was good and that there was no contaminants in it. No metallic pieces I suppose... This was after driving around for a while.
      Im hoping that I have a good differential and that maybe I can just have the fluid changed or something ... The mechanic said its a normal problem for my car and replacing the differential would be expensive... I may have it done anyway cuz I like the CX9.

      I never put a new gease boot on. It's not worth improperly lubing and contamination in the bearing. In my opinion. If you are going to remove the cv shift, just put a new one back. Most come with a lifetime warranty and you don't have to worry about the mess and extra time of rebuilding your cv shift. If the boot rips again, go get a new one for free.

    • @Ryo8761
      @Ryo8761 4 года назад

      @Scotties Hobbies I guess if you mean solved by replace then sure. And I understand the RUclips game of titles and etc...
      I am not a mechanic. But I do work on cars as a DIY person.
      Long story short, I got screwed over by a shop while in school. So...
      Here's a video of someone tearing it down.
      ruclips.net/video/QYi_zGcg7ME/видео.html
      It is not stated why, but my guess, once the housing and inner race got damaged, the bearings can no longer move freely. The ball bearings in this video was not damaged. That could be considered solve as it some what explain the actual cause of the clicking, clunking sound in details.
      OEM parts are 3 or 4 times more expensive than aftermarket parts. And while true that it is warranty, you hear some stories, of vibration and other problems. So yes you can always get replacements. Read on forums that some people had to swap out their axle 3x from certain aftermarket parts.
      Some oem website might still sell parts individually of the cv axle assembly.
      If you go the OEM route to ensure "problem free" installation gonna cost you. Or aftermarket and take a chance.
      Best case scenario, I also read in certain places they can rebuild your OEM axle.
      If it's only your out joints that cause the problem and it usually is the first to go.
      The shaft and inner cv joint are still good, why not recycle.
      I know maybe, your intended audience may not be someone who really want the "detail" explanation of things.

      That is probably a bushing doing bad. Check all your bushings on the control arms, the strut mount, id see if my bearings are good too. If you lift the car off the ground and can move the top of the tire in and out then your bearing is bad. If you can push in and out on the front or back of the tire, your rie rods are bad. Motor or trans mounts? Sometimes you can check them by watching the engine while switching from reverse to drive.. not too fast.. the engine might move a lot.. if it does, the mounts are probably bad.

      @@jamiewilliams1287 it is possible. I actually just had a friend with the same problem as you. It was a mid 20 teens civic. You could hear the clunk a lot in parking lots. One or two clunks when he would turn... if you have a continuous clunk while turning, I doubt the mount is the issue.

      @@ScottiesHobbies thanks for the reply. I hit a small kerb when parking. Front left of the tire wall took the impact. I notice a squeaking noise later that day when braking but that went away. Now after 10 mins of driving or so there is now a small rattling noise under acceleration and at cruising speed and stops when i lift and slow down. If I drive slow I hear nothing but if I turn really fast to the right I can hear the rattle again. Sound is definitely coming from the front left where I hit. Could it be brake or cv, or?

      That could be any bushing in the suspension or steering system. Someone needs to watch the location that is clunking. The bad bushing should move. Sometimes they are hart to find. Check the strut mounts too.

      Did you see any visible grease leaking from either of the boots on the CV shaft you replaced? Have you visually inspected the other side for boot damage? How about your strut mounts? Lastly... in the last month my friend had a odd sound like a clunk when he make a turn. Only one clunk per turn. We couldn't find anything. Come to find out he had 2 bad motor mounts. Replaced the motor mounts and sound went away.
      With all that said. Not all repairs needed are going to be the same every time. Sometimes its worth paying a little , like $90, on a diagnostic. Spend more now, save a ton in the long run.

      The axle's nut is on very tight.
      1. Make sure you straighten the axle's dented lip to round & reuse it. A new axle has nut
      2. Loosen that nut with wheel on the ground or re bar to lock rotor from spinning.
      3. If you can't take out the axle assy out, then turn the wheel (N) ever 11 degrees
      4. If you remove part of the lower or top joint, check with 3 fingers = move means replace
      5. Check lower control arm /or top control arm
      6. Once the axle is out do check the inner and outer tie rods = hold it horizontal & let up
      All those mentioned above should not move easily
      When you buy the cv axle, make sure you buy transmission seal (cv axle to transmission)
