I grew up wrestling with Blair’s Will Henckel. We’re playing dodgeball after practice one time and I’m not the best player in the room, but he picks me first anyway. I asked him why and what he said I’ll never forget. “I’d rather take a shot at winning the upset with my friends than dominate with people I don’t know.” If I remember correctly, we lost pretty bad. He’s an amazing wrestler and a great person too.

@@walthoward68 Nah. Did wrestling 3 years, folkstyle's okay I guess, I always preferred freestyle over folk though. I realized I could use a lot more of my judo training and techniques I knew in that style over folkstyle. More points available and a much more free style. Also, there's not really as many rules as folk. Folk doesn't let you clasp your hands, I always hated that rule.
@@zaynes5094 Judo is an excellent study, but I tend to believe that both forms of wrestling-depending upon the quality of coaching available-tones the body, and for developing young men on a subconscious level, it builds a more realistic sense of confidence and respect for others. Self-discipline is not something easily learned, and I believe that the ‘training’ involved here is worth its weight in gold, as far as confidence is concerned. I hope the legacy continues because it’s one of our best institutions in education. I realize that there are many ‘knuckle-dragging’ neanderthal coaches out there, but the physical and intellectual challenges wrestlers face so readily is a plus for those living in the blue collar world. Perhaps it’s more about balancing what you should do with what you should not. It goes far beyond a matter of win vs. loss. It’s about dignity, self-respect and honor as a man.
@@johngetz8585 NY as well. Not surprising considering I wrestled in NY some 7-8 years ago and there's a tough competition here in wrestling. We've got some solid wrestlers that go DI/DIII. Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Pennsylvania usually the top 5. Even Colorado and Arizona has pretty solid teams and individuals all around. Indiana is famous now because of Nick Lee and his brothers. Tons of really great wrestlers have come out of either Pennsylvania, NY, or California.
@@MF-kb2nvBlair is prep academy that takes talent from everywhere, so that’s correct not every wrestler on their roster is from NJ. But NJ as a D1 wrestler producer has been consistent for decades. Even taking Blair out of the equation, they are usually in the top 5, when not on par with Ohio.

That 175 freshman was something to see! To be that big and that good that early. We had a kid close to that at my school, but he had so much chest hair and 5 o'clock shadow, wasn't a real 9th grader. Lot of upside in these kids! Keep training hard!

If Seminary had 2 studs at 95 and 220 and knew they weren't going to have a HW is there a good reason they wouldn't bump those studs up? I'm sure they had someone who would have a fighting chance at those weights on the bench. What's the point of tying a match just to give it away?

NJ has the nastiest wrestlers. I mean that in a good way. I grew up in ct coached by a great mentor from jersey. I thought I wrestled yr round. These dudes at Blair live wrestling.
Technically it's usually Pennsylvania, followed by either Cali or Ohio. Arizona's got some competition and Brock Lesnar, as well as Gable Steveson, came from Minnesota. So, those are the best usually. I can attest to that having seen, some 8 years ago when I was in HS and did wrestling (even though I hated and still hate folkstyle), both Ohio and Pennsylvania wrestlers up close. I was surprised by the already-high levels those guys were at. Some guys from Ohio who were seniors and were getting pinned by guys who were in 9th/10th grade from Pennsylvania.

Blair just won Ironman Team trophy and Journeyman team trophy in December and have the most ranked wrestlers i believe Sem should be 3 behind Stillwater who got Ironman second

Wyoming Seminary is a Methodist prep school founded in 1844. It is located in the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania.
