    I love redwing and througood boots. That said; 2 years ago i bought a pair of Thursday captain's (black). They are than iron rangers. Alot cheaper. They're my dayoff boots during summer months. Leather soles are not my thing. Wear too quickly. Look awful in 2 months. Thursday offers a good boot at decent price. You take care of them and you'll get 8 years out of them. Just started watching this channel. I like what i see so far.

    A little shoe polish can help you overcome the “negative aging” of the leather, and preserving the leather (including the part of the outsole that does not come into contact with the pavement). Mixing colours of polish can give you very nice tones and helps the leather age well.

      This type of leather shouldn’t be polished like traditional dyed leather. A greasy cream conditioner would help hide the scratches and keep the leather looking great. Saphir makes a great lotion just for this type of leather.

I was strongly considering the Taft Dragon boot, but I'm a professor and on my feet a lot for teaching - I need something comfortable that I can move around in, and the Thursdays seem to have comfort in mind far more than the Tafts. Today the Wolverine is $250 on Amazon and the Captain is $199.
    The first thing I noticed at the beginning of the video was the creases in the Wolverine. Even without any experience in fine boots (I get mine on sale from Big 5) the difference was clear and obvious.
    Thursday Heritage Wingtips are $220. I'm tempted.

    • @mechkitten
      @mechkitten 3 года назад +1

      The extra stitching at the crease helps prevent creasing elsewhere. A boot is going to crease. You either tell it where to crease or it will decide on its own. The rubber sole probably helps maintain the intregrity of the upper. Also, lined boots tend to wear better. Ever worn unlined sneakers? Chaffing to the max.

  • @bjornnordstrom

    I got a pair of 1000 mile boots and I love them: Went straight to the cobbler after purchase and added a thin rubber sole to the foot pad and heel. While I can’t comment on the Wolverine boots as I’ve never owned a pair, I can say that the Thursday Captain boots break in fast, look and feel great, and are the most comfortable & versatile boots I’ve ever owned. I own 2 pairs of Captains: one in Natural (in actual Horween Chromexcel, the only color though) and Dark Olive Suede. The only boots more comfortable for me are my Thursday’s Cavalier Chelsea boots in “Desert” color. And now they’re doing killer sneakers! Great Co.!

  • @nickridgeway3614
    @nickridgeway3614 6 лет назад +102

    Call me crazy, but when I wear a pair of boots, I don't particularly want a leather sole. There are almost zero advantages to having a leather sole, while the disadvantages are numerous: (1) not that durable, (2) terrible traction, (3) don't look that great when scuffed up, and (4) hate water and snow.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад +20

      I've been trying to be really open minded about the potential benefits of a leather sole but they're just so ugly and the grip is so bad. Maybe if you only ever wear them inside I can see the groundfeel being a worthwhile aspect, but the Wolverines tout themselves as work boots.

We’ll never know how many countless fools stepped on an icy sidewalk and kept sliding into traffic to meet their end - oh, the humanity! We with our RUclips channels, skinny jeans and plastic / rubber shoes know better. (Yeah, I’m a fan of leather soles)

      I'm very happy with mine, after a few months. It felt very awkward at first because I never wore such a high heel. But I quickly adjusted to that and they are the most comfortable pair of shoes I have owned now. But it's also the most expensive pair I ever bought. I'm very curious to try something else in the same price range to compare but haven't found anything yet that isn't much more expensive.

  • @TheAikiToneRanger

    I happen to have both as well (though I got the President instead of the Captain), and I'm a big fan of both of them. In my case, both of them actually got worn just about evenly, I had more problems with the Thursday's sole actually, but in close to 4 years of use each, aside from having both re-sold (and I got leather for the Thursday at that point as well, just preferring the look), both have performed very well for me alternating them so I'm wearing each every other day. If I had to pick between the two, I'd probably go with the Wolverine even with the price difference, but it's still pretty close and both are workhorses to me. From my experience, with proper care both will be workhorses for you.

      I have 2 pair, the Diplomat and the Scout. I don't remember exactly how long I've had them, but it's been at least a year for the Diplomat and at least 2 years for the Scout. Both boots have held up pretty well in my opinion and I wear then pretty frequently. The Scouts went with me on a work trip to Portland, ME and a vacation to NYC this past spring. I haven't done a ton of traveling with the Diplomats, but I've done some and they've also held up very well. Of course these are my opinions and they're only going to carry as much weight as you would like them to. I would definitely not say they are "cheap" boots. You don't have to pay $400 dollars just to get a nice boot.

    • @Thursdayboots
      @Thursdayboots 5 лет назад +11

      @antant06... When we started we chose an EVA-based insole because it was comfortable right out of the box, and we think we made a decent decision at the time. We still think a medium to high-density EVA insole is preferable to full leather insoles...but this is very subjective, and a personal opinion. With that being said, it's rebound effect as well as poron and it breaks down faster than leather and poron. On our men's boots and Goodyear welt dress shoes last spring we implemented preformed shock-absorbing antimicrobial 17 shore A poron insoles with an embedded custom-made shank for each last. We now use Poron Insoles on most of our styles and tested everything and I don't think there is a better insole on the market. It's longer-lasting than leather. It has a better rebound effect than EVA and leather, and it's antimicrobial (leather can get mold and start to smell pretty fast as some of you may know). Hope this helps clarify. nice review , I have Thursday captain naturals and Chippewas which are closer to a red wing . The Thursdays are more water resistant but they are not even close to the Chippewas for durability in hard work conditions. I do think the Captains will last perhaps up to 10l years given normal wear, not construction work. The Chippewas formed better to my foot thus more comfortable than the Captains but I added a thin additional insole to the Captains which helped a great deal. Keep up the good work ! Cheers.

    The way the leather ages on the Wolverines can be seen by many people as a plus. A lot ( not everyone of course ) people want that beat up look to their boots. I've watched some annual videos by Magoo who has both the black and brown Wolverines. He observes that the black pair for some reason age much less than the brown. I thought Thursday put in a non metallic, airport friendly shank not a steel one in? Great video as always.

      That's a really good point and something I should have mentioned in the video, some people like beat up boots and also Wolverine has a nice nostalgic angle to it as well.
      I thought the 1000 Mile might have had some kind of shank but I called them up to ask and they said no. Hopefully it doesn't turn out this was inaccurate!! It was stressful putting that in the video haha
      Edit: Oh sorry you were talking about Thursday's shank. Some of them have a fiberglass one, like the new ""rugged and resilient" line but my understanding is the classic Captain has a steel one.

    I have both boots and completely agree with everything said in this review. I have multiple pairs of Thursdays because they are so comfortable and versatile. One is a pair of brown suede Vanguards that have a hydrophobic coating that's brilliant. Btw I'm looking forward to your review of White's MP Service Boot. I'm considering getting a pair.

      Yesss, it's so good to hear someone say I nailed the review! I never really know if I'm saying the right thing haha. I don't know much about the Vanguards hey, let me know how they wear in for you. Whites is filmed but I want to do another versus video next week so probably it won't go up for two weeks. But the hype is real for that one! I don't want to spoil it but the fit is maybe the best I've ever had.

      Your review was spot on! I've had the suede Vanguards for over a year. The ones I have are on the old last that were a little wider and heavier than their current Vanguards. All of my Thursday boots have had minimum break in time. The suede Vanguards felt great from get go and have gotten even more comfortable over time.

    Price wise, yes Wolverine is twice as much, win for the other, but really you want to compare the 1000 Mile Evan to this boot for the most fair comparison. Evan model has the Vibram half sole and the grip / traction you’re looking for. Personally I prefer the bigger toe area, it’s sleek enough without being too slim or too big. Most comfortable boots I’ve ever put on (Wolverines).

      Interesting I have the Evans model as well and compared to my Thursdays are way less comfortable. The Rugged Collection from Thursday have a shank which helps with support and I can wear all day. My 1000 Mile Boots get uncomfortable very easily. Funny, just different experiences

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад +1

      I mean I wouldn't call this comparison unfair, the 1000 Mile is the most popular boot of theirs, after all. But you're right that it's a tougher fight between the Captain and the Evan, maybe I should have mentioned in the video that they do offer a boot with a Vibram sole if that's the deciding factor for you. I was just comparing my experience with these two boots. Great comment!

    For me the Thursday boot. I have a wide selection of boots from red wing iron rangers, moc toes and gentleman travellers to wolverines. I love them all. However in terms of versatility I will go with the captain's every time. I wear with jeans, chinos and pretty much all my smart casual looks throughout year. My red wings for a more rugged look mostly in the colder months. My wolverines hardly get a look in to be honest.
    If you want quality, good looks, versatility at an amazing price point the Thursdays Every time.

    Of course leather soles are slippery when wet. They were designed at time when men wore overshoes, (formally known as rubbers) in the rain. The wrinkles are what makes the boot unique to you. It is what makes that leather so awesome. Don't want wrinkles? Cordavon comes from the horse's are, so it is really stiff. It doesn't show creases as much but it takes forever to break in and it is never as soft. I love that leather on the Wolverines. It is the most comfortable vamp I've ever had on any shoe or boot and it looks good after years and multiple soles. The Thousand Milers are my main casual footwear 6 months of the year, so I can attest to the quality. They are excellent.

    I started my quest for a pair of boots with Thursday Captains. The first pair were flawed and returned. The replacement pair were also flawed. I requested a refund after customer service suggested that I take the brand new boots to a cobbler for repairs. I just received my Wolverine 1000 Mile Cap Toe Classic boots with Vibram half soles. The quality of leather, and overall quality of the Wolverine boots, is superior to Thursday Boots in my opinion. I explained my negative experience and rating in a Thursday Boots survey. It was never posted. The last negative review I can find on Thursday’s website was from 2019. My negative review was given earlier this year.

    One thing that I think you overlook is that the Wolverine boots are just more handsome than the Thursday boots. I realize this is subjective but I have now compared two other boots (the Rhodes Dean and the Thursday Vanguard) to the Wolverine boot and the latter is just a better looking boot. The Vanguard is supposed to be made from Horween leather as is the Wolverine but it's not the same Horween leather. The Wolverine has more depth of color and a luster that the Thursday does not possess. And the overall shape just makes it look better on my foot. Just that minor curve at the top of the shank sets it apart. The Wolverines slightly more rounded toe box just fits my foot better than the other two and also gives it a nicer profile. I haven't worn them outside yet and the leather sole does give me pause but it is a great looking boot.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад

      These are all great, thoughtful points, Ray! Yeah, it's all subjective, Wolverine has a rounder toe, Thursday and Rhodes don't. Some prefer it some don't, but especially if rounder toes fit your toes better, welp, sounds like you don't have any doubt. Hope you like your Wolverines!

    The Thursday studded sole is pretty slippery on smooth flat surfaces, like polished concrete or polished stone. Initially, until the studs wear down, all of your weight is on the tips of the studs, which is a small total surface area.
    Once you treat a leather sole, it loses most of its’ slippery feel.

    I am a Red Wing boot fan but I own other boots like Wolverine 1000 mile. The thing is that the Wolverine 1000 mile is beautiful and a real pleasure to use. I don't use it to often because it is more delicate and casual compared to most of my other boots not a work boot at all especially withe that thin leather sole. Resale price is very important also for me as a collector. Thursday boots I am sure are very good but not a wise investment for me. You pay less up front but then they have almost no resale value so you are left with litter or non money to at the end of the live cycle of the boot to reinvest. They don't have a cult behind them like my other USA made boots. I compare this Thursday to a boot I love, the J Crue Ludlow captoe chromaexell made in China. One of my favorite boots in term of construction, look and feel but very difficult to resale and very expensive upfront. At the end of the day I am not about a one boot for all. I enjoy the Iron Ranger 8111 with jeans, Wolverine 1000 mile to smell and look at it only, Red wing Beckman for casual pants, Allen Edmonds black Calf Skin for funerals, Burgundy real Shell Cordovan Shoe for dress pants (great smell also), red wing 1206 around the house work (water proof) and red wing 2406 steel toe for real had core work (love the color smell and patina ). Any of my boots and shoes made in the USA I can resale without a problem when I get tire of them or want a new one for fun. This is my opinion ! Thanks for the videos!

      Thanks for the writeup, Pedro! If my 1K hadn't creased so much I'd have a better opinion of them because there really is plenty to like about them. And if you see boots as something to resell down the line (which I do see, especially in fancy men's boot stores like Leffot here in NYC) then I can see why you'd go pricier. If you can believe it I've still never bought Cordovan boots but one day I will!

    Absolutely can't agree with you. The Wolverine 1000 Mile boot is superior. Yeah, the Thursday is a good value boot, but it's not even close in quality of materials. The issue with the sole offering less grip is easily remedied by having a Topy sole installed (or opting for the 1000 Mile Evans shoe, which has a Vibram sole piece). Don't get me wrong, the Thursday is a nice boot, but it doesn't hold up to the Wolverine. As for the ageing of the leather, dude, condition the poor thing once in a while yeah? It's basically an oiled leather, oiled leathers need a *little* care to get the best out of them.

    Very informative review and comparison of two popular brands. I am new to boots like this, beyond my purring hiking boots (Vasque, Danner, LL Bean, etc), so I am on a steep learning curve regarding researching these models. I had purchased a very good pair of Nisolo boots on sale for $210 (normally $288) but returned them, feeling the price was too much. I did not realize how high most of the boots out there really are. I probably should have kept them. I think I will have to work my way up the ladder. Last night, I bought a pair of black Johnston and Murphy boots on clearance for $100. I realize that this is for men but a good comfort boot is hard to find. I normally wear doc’s. I have 4 pair. But over the last 5 years I have been out in the country. I have trashed them with work. I need to be able to dig a ditch change clothes/ brush off and head to town. I had seen several of your comparisons of boots and I’m leaning toward the caption boot. What worries me, is that they are shaped like a Lorado. And that boot applies pressure to my ankle and makes my back hurt. Doc’s don’t make me hurt but suck with traction and have to be shipped off hundreds of miles just to get them fixed. I had seen the woman’s combat boot but it has a zipper and that is always the first thing to go and water leakage. I like style but 80 pair of shoes is not me. A few good boots and call it good. Spending 200.00 on something that can be fixed by a local cobbler sounds good.

    For all the praise men's style folk give Italian shoes or shoes from Spain, I hope someone will eventually discuss the quality of Mexican-made shoes. Thursdays are made in León Guanajuato, Mexico, and the quality of their leatherwork is fantastic.
    It took me about a year or two for my first pair of Captains to start to feel really comfortable in places where the leather needs to stretch a lot (sole, heel, vamp). I might just be a person who doesn't feel comfortable in high-quality leather boots until they've aged a year or two, as I've had the same experience with non-Chelsea, non-suede Allen Edmonds as well.

    The best 6 inch unlined boots I ever had were wolverines. They were buckskin tan. I was a meter reader. I walked usually five hours a day. I never wore a set of those soles out.. they were not Vibram cleated soles, they were a different black rubber one piece ,it was very cushiony. they were not those stupid soles that were some type of a Durashock were the center of the soul and the center of the heel had some type of a shock absorber build in that was not full width.. those stupid soles cause my ankle to kick it out many times. A few times I laid on the ground for a few minutes making sure my ankle wasn’t broke.. I think those stupid soles came on Sears/diehard shoes but I am not totally sure it’s been a while.
    The thing that wore out on my 6 inch unlined wolverine boots was, the dew on the grass.. your feet don’t get wet in the winter .. it’s spring through fall that your feet are soaked every morning by 9 AM walking through the grass/ dew. that’s what makes the leather finally give up..
    I also learned there is no such thing as waterproof. Not Gore-Tex, not silicone spray, not mink oil , not bees wax Applied with a hairdryer to melt it in. I guarantee you there is nothing that is waterproof. rubber is waterproof, but your feet will be just as soaked from perspiration that is not permitted to escape., and there is not a pair of boots made of rubber that I have ever seen that are comfortable enough to wear for five hours a day walking..Especially those duck boots.. you need a solid sole 6 inch shoe if you’re gonna be walking all day. If you were something very flexible, that beats the hell out of your feet making them twist in all directions and bend even over pebbles..if you buy a pair of boots that claims they are waterproof, save your receipt and save the tags that are hanging from the shoelaces for when you take them back. I have taken many many boots back that were claimed to be waterproof..
    Don’t buy your “waterproof “boots from a mom and pop shoe store. Buy them from a large chain that has employees that won’t give you a fight when you try to get your money back. If you go to a mom and pop to return your boots, they will often tell you to return the boots to the factory yourself. That happened to me twice..
    Wolverine quit making those boots that lasted forever. I mean I would get two years out of a pair before the weather finally started separating from the soil from the wet/dry/wet/dry cycle which dried out the leather even though I would oil them to moisturize the leather. All they did was Delay the inevitable.. I can’t think of another occupation it is harder on shoes than meter reader..

    I’ve had both and you would never be able to wear the Thursday’s for work. The Thursday is for people that want to wear a boot but just for the sole looks.

    Don’t have the wolverine yet, but as for the Thursday, I think it’s overrated, or at least the quality control could have been better. The leather looks cheap, but so far it’s been holding up and comfortable. I would not buy Thursday again for the price they are asking for.

    My 1000 Mile boots are garbage. The loose grain was awful when I bought it and because I had already exchanged for a different size (the boots are narrower than most), they wouldn't allow me to return them. The heel then detached from the boot with about a month or so of wear. Junk. Not worth the money.
    Thursday, however, is a great value boot. I'm a big Viberg and Red Wing fan but often find myself babying those boots because they're so expensive. The Thursdays are so reasonably priced despite the high quality that they really hit a sweet spot!

      That's really good feedback Zack! Yeah it's certainly less stressful to wear $199 boots :)

      Thursday Boot Company not only do I love your boots, I also love your involvement with the reviewers and comments. Makes the experience of owning Thursday boots extra special. I've had mine for over 2 years and I have two more in my cart right now!

    Hi Stridewise (Nick) How would you compare these Captains to the Vanguards that you reviewed? Would you rate them on-par, or are they not aging as well? Curious since they are chromeexcel too I believe...

    The President boot from Thursday is like my dream to have lol they’re aren’t to expensive $199 but rn I can’t afford it but I also hope they stay at that price or catch a sale 👌🏾

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 лет назад

      Yeah I think it's worth having as a goal, I sometimes tell folks that maybe they shouldn't have $700 Viberg boots are their dream purchase if they're having trouble paying rent haha but I think saving up for Presidents can be a good idea. Which leather do you like?

    Thursday all day. Every day. They’re the most versatile boot for the price and built great. I can’t get enough of the thursdays

    Don't be afraid of the Internet hate machine. If you like a boot better then say so. That's how you become an authority on a subject. That's what I'm growing to like about this channel. You aren't afraid to tell your opinion.

    A big part of your calculation for the "better" boot was based on the price. The Wolverine 1k is now listed on Amazon for $200. If the prices were equal would you still prefer the Captian?

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад +1

      Tough one! I still prefer the versatility and comfort of Thursday, though the Wolverine benefits from a slightly lower heel

    The #1 problem I have with Thursday boots is that if you save an extra $60-75, or if you know where to look, you can get a pair of Red Wing.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад

      Yeah it's hard to talk about pricing because so many people know where to look for seconds, I try to just go by the MSRP

    Any recommendations on socks for these types of boots? I imagine that you would want some socks that are darker and come up higher, almost like dress socks. But true dress socks are thin, and for these boots it seems like you would want thicker, more sturdy socks that help fill out the boot, prevent sliding/rubbing inside the boot, and provide some cushioning. On the other end, true hiking socks are probably too thick and hot. So, what are the perfect socks for these hybrid work/casual/dressy socks? Thanks.

    The biggest reason for the price difference is the Thursday boots are direct to consumer. The price on the Wolverine has the retailer markup, where the Thursday boots are only sold directly by the manufacturer. This is good for the consumer but bad for anyone that works for or owns a shoe store.

    What do you recommend between the "President" and the "Captain" from Thursday boot?
    First look - brand new, I like the president.
    But from your Wolverine comparison, I am wondering if the "President" would develop creases just like the Wolverine - which I am not a big fan of.
    It appears from your video that the "Captain" doesn't develop a lot of creases.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад

      Mmm, they're the same shoe, just one has a toecap. The likelihood of leather creasing more has to do with the leather you pick. Chromexcel leather (which the Wolverine is made from) typically creases.

    Have the Captains in brown. Think I'm going to get a black or maybe brandy pair shortly.

      Brandy is as funky leather! I've got a pair in terracotta as well.
