This was a super fun watch! Some really left of field picks here too I wouldn't have expected, so I appreciated it for that. Always good to see Van Helsing get some love; I've always felt that film to be super underrated, especially in its clear adoration and respect for the classic Universal monster movies.
One of my all-time favourite horror movie openers would have to be A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The whole way it's shot feels like you're immediately transported into a dream, that quickly devolves into a nightmare as Freddy appears and he begins poisoning Kristen's dream landscape. It's so wonderfully shot and pulls you right into the film.

Although not a horror movie, I found the opening to "Jurassic Park" scary. The tension as the workers see the cage carrying the velociraptor arrives, the scared looks when they hear it shriek... but, most of all, the gatekeeper who falls off the cage after the creature knocked it loose and began to drag him inside - all the while as he screams bloody murder and the workers desperately try to rescue him and stop the dinosaur, but to no avail as he gets slaughtered. It scared me back when I was very little (around 1995-96), and what made it scarier was I thought the gatekeeper was my father (they both have a similar skin complexion). To this day, I still can't bring myself to watch the opening of that movie. And "Scream", too.

Van Helsing was great really. I watched it maybe 1000 times. I suggest short horror movies as well. Most of them are better than full length Hollywood movies.
