44 years later, and this remains the greatest music video of all time. The most unusual and brilliant number 1 in UK chart history. One of Bowie's many masterpieces.
He was unbelievable. What he did in his time was surreal. He was able to parabolically touch on various themes in ambiguous ways. And the way it complements his creative universe is absurd. This song can mean an infinity of things and even so the most trivial is still absurdly surreal. Genius.
The costume is Pierrot - the pantomime tragic/sad clown. The choice was intentional; as you observed, the "I'm happy" is more aspirational than real.
His addiction was very bad... in 74'-76', he was incredibly thin. Not only because of his crippling addiction to "White China" but also his peculiar diet of strictly whole milk and red peppers (many assume he had an eating disorder at this time). He got so thin the 5'10" man was just 80 pounds at one point. So very sad, he was extremely paranoid and emaciated but that was also one of his most creative periods.
