That was a fun reaction and overview. My friend Candy worked with David right after the Thin White Duke period when he sobered up and said he was wonderful to work with. The album from that time period STATION TO STATION is really worth a listen particularly the title track imo. The album is in my top 5.
I think you might really enjoy.. Teenage wildlife of the ashes to ashes Album .So good.I used to love listening to this one after a night out ,in bed on my walkman in my 20's I'm now in my 60's and still love it same.❤
The first Bowie song that I got into. A friend was a fan, and MTV was new in 1982 -and the amazing visuals of this. Bowie studied mime, and was a visual artist, as a musician.
I loved that you didn't interrupt the song and your analysis was insightful. Thank you. I bought this album the moment it hit the stands in 1980 and it has always been deeply meaningful for me. Thank you for your reaction. I wish you much success!
Stunning song about addiction and a reflection on his life so far. Many of the characters resurfaced. For me perhaps my favorite of his. When he shot the video it was the most expensive ever at that time. RIP a true genius and a personal hero ❤
Welcome to the world of Bowie. You never know what you're going to get, but you know it will be brilliant. My favorite album was Young Americans, his soul and R&B phase. Every song is absolutely incredible. I'd suggest the title cut, Young Americans, would be a good next reaction. Keep the Bowie coming!
From the Album that catapulted Bowie into Stardom “Ziggy Stardust” Check out the Song “Moonage Daydream”. With Bowie’s Absolutely Amazing Vocals & Eclectic Songwriting & with Mick Ronson on Piano Melotron String Arraignments & Ronson’s Other Worldly Guitar make the Album Ziggy Stardust Bowie’s Signature Album
One of the key songs of 1980, in the transition from the old music to the new. Perhaps it's unsurprising that Bowie was able to tap into the new technology to update his sound in a way that impressed new young fans and still sounds modern today. The theme seems unrelatable to a 13-year-old kid but even though we knew nothing from drugs, we knew plenty about highs and lows of life.
There was a photo, of Bowie, in a full button shirt, with his arm raised up -seen as the fascist gesture. The same arm raise was from Rome as salute. Fascia a symbol of Rome, bundle of sticks. Bowie got sober.
Ashes to Ashes is such a great song - an open wound. David at his most honest. As far as the original Major Tom goes, I hear it literally also, but I have a different interpretation. Major Tom looks back on Earth, which is blue - sad. He is overwhelmed with depression and turns off his own communications. His last words are "tell my wife I love her very much, she knows." Then ground control says "Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong." I can also agree that the addiction theme works there as well, with him cutting off his own communications with the world.
Think the line "Strung out in heaven's high hitting an all time low" sort of sums it up. A couple of other great drug use songs are "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground and "Needle and the Damage Done" by Neil Young.
major toms a junkie..from space oddity...hes definitly looking down at his state of mind...the musical sound of this is the inspiration of making it through an all time low...triumph over tragedy
David Bowie is the king of reinvention. When they were shooting the video an old man was in the shot. Do you know who that is? He was asked - yes a C@&& in a clown suit. Was his reply. Bowie thought the response was hilarious and brought him back to earth! Yes he was just a C$$$ in a clown suit!
You’re not wrong with your literal interpretation of Space Oddity, though like all great songs it can be heard on more than one level. Bowie wrote it after reading the Ray Bradbury story “Kaleidoscope”, which is about the terror and resignation of a man cast adrift from his spaceship and slowly falling to earth.
I think good good stories can always mean more than one thing. So once the record is cut what it meant before to the musicians is just one possibility among many.
He was a intravenous drug user he was a heroin addict ,,it basically killed him in the end he had hepatitis C which is common with intravenous users ,he had a real bad irreversible incurable strain which often you will see turns to liver cancer which is what he died from .
I certainly don't consider a Space Oddity to be only about the world of being high or something. It talks about a lot of important things at the time, like going to the moon and the increasing pace of technology and how it can be alienating and all kinds of things. That's way too simplified of a view.
WE LOST 3 HUGE ROCK ARTISTS PRETTY MUCH AROUND THE SAME TIME GIB 😮☹IT JUST SEEMED LIKE BAM BAM BAM! DAVID BOWIE, TOM PETTY AND EDDIE MONEY ☹AND SADLYYYYY ENOUGH THERE'S MORE TO FOLLOW!☹IT'S A PART OF OUR LIFE
Such a dark one... but sooo good. Great reaction! On the space side of things, I think it would be great if you took some time to react to The Expanse if you haven't seen it (and if you wanted to venture beyond music). reactions).
Although I like the video, it is none-the-less distracting at times. And although it helps in the interpretation, I prefer to experience Ashes To Ashes just listening and discovering. Maybe it's like the difference between a book and its movie. Anyway, amazing reaction to a first listen. It took me years and many listens to get a comparable level of understanding. Really appreciate CR's attentiveness and analysis. He's quickly bubbling up toward the top of my reactor channels list.
I'm with you. For first listens, I have found it's best to just listen vs. watching the video. Sometimes the video, especially bad ones, can color my perception of the song.
YOU SHOULD DO ELTON JOHN'S 72 HUGE HIT FROM HIS 72 ALBUM ( HONKY CHATEAU ) ROCKETMAN GIB 😊, SAME IDEA AS SPACE ODDITY OF COURSE DIFFERENT BECAUSE IT WAS ELTON! 😊ANYWAY STAY WELL, LUVVVVV YOUR TYPES OF RESEARCH, IT'S SO COOL! 👍
masterpiece
Sounds as good today as in 1980 outstanding track on all fronts

Bet Bowie was a wonderful chap. I agree, Station to Station is one of his underrated but one of his top 5 albums. Absolutely love that album.

I love this song.
Is my favorite Bowie song.
Totally ❤
Mine too!! Genius!
Oh the creative music video, standing out from the others to become iconic.
Genius, real talent… miss you David.

Huge Bowie fan!!! Bowie and Beatles! 👍

Bowie and Kate Bush were artist that absolutely used the technology in music to progress their artistic progression back in the 80's and did it well.
Great beat and funk to this and one of my fav trippy music videos. Bowie was an artist through and through
Love this song.
Самая любимая песня. Обожаю его. Его музыка запала в душу
GOTTA see a live performance of this - mad funky!
There was a photo, of Bowie, in a full button shirt, with his arm raised up -seen as the fascist gesture. The same arm raise was from Rome as salute. Fascia a symbol of Rome, bundle of sticks.
Bowie got sober.
Masterful.
Devastating lyrics.
The Johnny Carson Show performance of this cut along with Life On Mars was badass.
Stunning.

My absolute favorite video.
At 3.12 the front male on the left was Steve Strange, R.I.P.
Love your comments on addiction, brother. Well said.
Really great reaction and commentary afterwards. New sub for sure. Thanks for the video!
So brilliant
major toms a junkie..from space oddity...hes definitly looking down at his state of mind...the musical sound of this is the inspiration of making it through an all time low...triumph over tragedy
Great reaction 👏👏
The video,is brilliant also.
I see it as Bowie is Major Tom. Oddity is the launch of his career, Ashes is his epiphany, realization of his state of mind.
David Bowie plays Tesla in the movie The Prestige. He is fabulous. Just saying.
“Wanna an axe to break the ice, I wanna come down right now”
Now that’s a double entendre
His drug dealer had a car with green wheels, hence the line “the little green wheels are following me”
Great content guy keep it up love you

It commendable how you consider other interpretations of lyrics. I enjoy your channel so no charge for my recommendations. It’s my pleasure.
I was just a kid when this came out and it made such a big impression on me .

💖💖💖
Sad but yet so beautiful and your take on it is really interesting too
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥
Excellent choice and reaction 🍻
Yet another character Bowie buried. Btw, that really was his mum walking along with him on the beach.
I think good good stories can always mean more than one thing. So once the record is cut what it meant before to the musicians is just one possibility among many.
Great reaction, thank you😊💖Love this song and this video.
Both are so interesting
This is the shortened AM radio version. LP version is longer and better.
So true!
Bowie=Rock God.......the last and definitive "World AntiHero"
He was a intravenous drug user he was a heroin addict ,,it basically killed him in the end he had hepatitis C which is common with intravenous users ,he had a real bad irreversible incurable strain which often you will see turns to liver cancer which is what he died from .

👏
His mum and Steve strange of Visage are both on the bench in this video.
Space Oddity wasn't a metaphor. It's about an astronaut who gets strung out on heaven's high. Literally a space cadet.

Double and triple entendres are easy in Daveworld.
He is dressing like a "Mod" in this video. Now see if you can find Boy George in the video :) He's in there!
I think Space Odyssey is both. It's about a man lost in space AND an allegory for drug addiction.
Although I like the video, it is none-the-less distracting at times. And although it helps in the interpretation, I prefer to experience Ashes To Ashes just listening and discovering. I always thought that maybe "Major Tom" might be a drug(s)?
Addiction is a horrible thing
