The Oogie Boogie Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of their best, and you get to hear the bass sing his freaking heart out. (and his 5 freaking octave range) for added fun, turn on the closed captions (there is a little joke at the end) Voice Play loves to go theatrical for their videos, they do many of them up right.
I am so glad you enjoyed it and showed that enthusium. Many good Voiceplay suggestions already given, you can't go wrong with any of them. For a few surprises from "the baritone" try Geoff's solo channel. He left the piano scale a while ago and now sings on the Richter scale. But then again, no one in VP stays in their lane...🤣
Layne (beatboxer) and Geoff (pronounced Jeff), the two guys sitting down, have been friends and singing together since middle school, so more than half their life at this point and singing professionally together for 20 some years. Layne is an incredibly talented beatboxer, sounds like the guy swallowed a drum set and Geoff's deep notes sound so much like an actual base, and they have such chemistry between them, I don't doubt that you thought there was more than one beat boxer going on with the way that they complement each other. The bald tenor on the left, Eli (pronounced Ellie) was also someone they've known since middle school, has been a member of their band for a long time also, though not a founding member like Layne and Geoff. Cesar (tenor/baritone on the right) is the newest member, been with them between a year and a year and a half now, and is a great addition. Ashley has been a featured performer in several of their videos now. By the way, Ashley was never physically in the air, they achieved that effect strictly through green screening. Almost all of their arrangements are done by Layne or Geoff, Eli does the lighting, and whoever does the arrangement is usually the one directing the video and editing it. They do a lot of the mixing, but the amazing Ed Boyer does the final mix, I think nearly all the a cappella groups use him, he's a genius. Geoff does solo songs/videos also, and Layne has done some Steadicam camera work for those, but obviously they have to use outside help for filming these group videos. This is a terrific rabbit hole to fall into, all of these guys are incredibly talented, with insane ranges and the ability to act with their voices and their bodies. I always feel that VoicePlay is the perfect name for them, because they not only put on a play in effect by how much they emote for the audience, but the play part so often refers to the fact that you can see they are having such fun doing what they love to do for a living, and never taking themselves to seriously.
Sorry not to be judgy and I don't know a lot about this group so I could be wrong but I think it was their former member Earl they knew since middle school (earl, geoff, and layne), and Eli the awesome possum came later. ??? Anyway I love your post and only wanted to say this because we're both fans and it's fun to know things. I guess I'll look it up later to be sure since like I stated, I'm not. Much love. ❤️
@@lauragraves4342 Yeah, definitely Earl was a friend since back in middle school, but Eli attended a different school and they still met at times in chorus competitions, etc., and I've heard both that it was in middle and high school, so it could have been later.
Great reaction, and welcome to the madness! This one was arranged by Layne, and the humor here is classic Layne. (Who ever arranges, makes all of the key decisions and usually does the video too. Most are either Layne or Geoff.) Layne takes his humor all of the way up to the edge of classic slapstick - but with such a delicate touch that you'll howl. It's more perspective than anything else. I LOVE his humor. If you want some seriously deranged humor, check out Hall of the Mountain King that they released for Halloween this year. (also arranged by Layne.) Watch closely, everything is flying by so fast you'll miss half of it on your first take. And yeah, Hall of the Mountain King is a classical piece without lyrics - but you don't think they'll let that stop them, do you?
This was actually my first time hearing this, and I've got to say that it wouldn't have been my first choice of their performances to watch. The suggestions that have already been made will absolutely blow your mind (my personal recommendations are Dream On, Hoist the Colors, Oogie Boogie's Song, and this may seem a little weird, their Little Mermaid Medley). The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, also has some "solo" stuff (you'll understand the quotation marks when you see one) here on RUclips which you may want to check out (e.g. Sixteen Tons, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Misty Mountains Cold).
Every day I look for reactors who have never heard Voiceplay. It is such a hoot to see someone hear them for the first time. They lost two members during the pandemic; their high tenor left for personal reasons in 2020 and the baritone was recruited by the US Navy and is singing with them now. The baritone on the right in this video has been with them for about 18 months. They dropped a Christmas piece today, a song that has made me cringe since it first came out. However, their arrangement and performance is original and funny and I love it. The Chipmunk Song, Christmas Don't Be Late. The arrangements are usually done by either Geoff Castellucci, the bass, or Layne Stein, the beatboxer, they usually trade off month to month. Whichever does the arrangement takes full control of the production, set, costume and makeup styles. They work with a makeup artist, Rick Underwood for some of their pieces (they get quite theatrical) and an outside camera crew. Their lighting and effects are done by Eli (rhymes with jelly) Jacobson, the bald tenor. By the way, he is a rocking beast - Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 should be next. Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff.
Voice Play are known as The Theater Kids of a capella. They love to dress the part with background, props & lighting. As with all Voice Play videos don't stop until the credits roll or you may miss something good.
While most of my suggestions for more VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci solo videos have already been mentioned, I would like to put in a plug for their version of We Don't Talk About Bruno from the Disney Encanto movie. If you're familiar with it, it's a very complicated and complex song, with multiple singers and situations, and VP does an amazing job - and it's also got quite a bit of the humor you enjoyed with this video!
High five Kevin, great pick! And hot dog, John Reaves, this reaction made my day. I love first time reactions to VoicePlay and I stan the heck out of VoicePlay itself. They’re the “theatre kids” of acapella, often incorporating costumes and makeup and really going all out. The bass you liked is Geoff Castellucci and he has a lot of music on his individual channel. I would recommend VoicePlay’s covers of Enemy (Imagine Dragons) and Dream On (Aerosmith). Really looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for the high five Daniel. I finally found a reactor to react to it. I was late with SauceyDad and he already had done it. Glad it made your day.
Hoist the Colours and My Mother Told Me, Their roster has changed over the years, so don't freak out if you don't see the same people in different videos. The percussionist and bass player share the music arrangement duties.
I have never heard VoicePlay before, and I really like this. I remember watching the original video a million times when it first came out (have I mentioned that I'm old?) and I'm so glad it's getting another look by the world. It deserves it, and so does this version. Very cool.
Really anything you feel like watching of theirs is great. I love their Disney covers as well as the Broadway ones. I am a big Queen fan so Queen in 5 minutes is one of my favs.
Yay! VoicePlay is absolutely amazing! Would definitely recommend wearing headphones for acapella reactions so you can clearly hear all the epic bass notes.
Oh, my friend... you *must* check out Hoist the Colors and My Mother Told Me. Eli (pronounced "Ell-ee," bald tenor on the left) could front a metal band himself. They have far too many videos out there to pick out highlights, but aside from the two I already mentioned, Oogie Boogie Man, Queen in 5 Minutes, and Moana Medley are all quite excellent!
always fun to see someone listen to VoicePlay for the first time. you pointed out that Cesar has astonishing vocal control, but you've yet to discover that ALL of them are absolute beasts.
John... Please check out their "Hoist The Sails" Video, and their cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On."... Also, Geoff Castellucci's version of Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine." Love this group too.
It was hilarious how they reacted when she was floating like, do we need an old priest and a young priest? Should we call exorcist? lol. And how are they all so super talented!!! I loved the long Geoff distortion sounds.
Definitely check out their other work. The are VERY theatrical with their videos. At the moment they have 4 main members and have a guest 5th. They only have one baritone in the group and it's the beatboxer Lane. Geoff is another very low bass vocalist, but he doesn't go all that low in this song. Oogie Boogie Song is a good reference for Geoff's range, but Hoist the Colors is one of my favorite songs they've done. Also check out some of their older work. Their Queen in 5 minutes is amazing.
Since everyone else has already covered the basics of the group, I'll cut straight to the suggestions. 🤣 You pointed out Cesar's (baritone) vocals in this video, so I thought you might enjoy some other videos where he features prominently. Probably his most 'in front' song is VoicePlay's cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me", originally by Bonnie Raitt, though he gets some wonderful moments in "We're Good" and "Butter" as well. Another standout is his performance in "Hoist the Colours", but that whole song will be a knockout, so be prepared for that. It's a reactor-slayer. You still haven't heard Geoff truly go deep, nor Eli nail some gritty rock tenor heights.
VoicePlay is pretty well known for their amazing arrangements and incredible vocals. And let's not forget the humor. Geoff (the bass singer) once described them as kinda like Pentatonix but a lot sillier. Really enjoyed your reaction and I hope you do more of these guys!
In the BTS video Eli nailed the lighting, Geoff said it was a job keeping the floor wet to look like The Inbetween. Layne did his filming magic to have Ashley levitate. When they say they do it all, They do. #TheatrekidsOfACappella. Geoff Castellucci the Bass didn't even go very low in this video. Check his channel where he does his own Low Bass covers.
Welcome to Voiceplay! I agree with the suggestions already made. If you want to see more of their sense of humor ( or their type of " dumb" as Geoff calls it) , must sees are We Don't Talk About Bruno, In the Hall of the Mountain King, the Little Mermaid medley, and their just released today Christmas Don't Be Late. Also Geoff's solo stuff is amazing, Way Down showcases his humor well.
Thank you for a great reaction to Voice Play. If you are familiar with any of the video games like Halo & The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim you must please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover of The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim & the Halo theme song. They are Totally awesome. Also a must see is Queen In 5 Minutes & Voice Plays cover of Dream On originally by Aerosmith. Voice play will blow you out of the water with these.
Wait WAIT is this your first look at VoicePlay? I watch most reactors for VoicePlay but I found YOU for your discovery of BabyMetal. I did NOT expect to get these two worlds to overlap! Both groups have had a huge impact on my life. You really can't go wrong with VoicePlay and you'll have plenty of great suggestions coming in. Can't wait to share this journey with you!
It always makes me happy to watch someone discover Voiceplay ☺️ I've been a fan from their beginning..... I'm proud to say I was their 199th supporter on Patreon
Cesar de la Rosa is the baritone. Geoff Castellucci is bass, Eli Jacobson is tenor and Layne Stein is vocal percussion.... Technically...... They ALL can and have gone way beyond their vocal titles.. Geoff is described as a bass but he has a beautiful baritone voice which he displays much more in his own videos.. Check out ghost riders in the sky, Shenandoah, ain't no sunshine... Eli (pronounced Ellee like jelly) has the most phenomenal rock tenor but has also covered bass and baritone parts.. Cesar, well he's just Cesar.. Master of sassiness and he recently hit notes you would never expect from a baritone... Layne is vocal percussion extrodinaire... I don't think there is a noise that he can't make. He is also a lovely warm toned baritone that can hit bass. .. VP also do 99 % of their own productions.. Costume, editing, lighting, etc. I'm subscibing in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff. Xx ❤️🇬🇧
People have given you great picks for new songs, I think you will love it especially if you get one where Geoff Castellucci, the bass, actually get really low. You should also check out his solo channel. His Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold is ICONIC.
VoicePlay is well known for their comedy, their theatric approach, their extremely interesting arrangements, their insane voices, for doing almost every aspect of this creative process themselves, and their top notch videos! They also try to give all the members their time in the spotlight throughout the song, unless the song really requires a big solo lead by a single person. Their bass Geoff often gets some solo lines, but often his most impressive parts are the bass line he is holding in the background while the others sing lead. The complexity and agility he shows in the bassline is really impressive and often overlooked unless you pay close attention to it. The same goes for their beatboxer. He does an insane amount of work in the background, a lot of it not even properly heard over all the other voices, but so important to the feel of the song. It's not until you hear the karaoke tracks that they provide to their patrons, that you really get to hear the insane duo that is Geoff and Layne. Their rhythm section is awe inspiring to behold. Eli is the bald rock tenor, known for his powerful rock belts, amazing riffs, insane character voices and being able to sing a lot higher in mixed voice than what is normal for male singers. Cesar is the new baritenor of the group. A very expressive singer, a total sweetheart, and a beautiful voice!
Beautiful! I'm a BIG Pentatonix fan (and you're becoming one) but I need you to know about Geoff Castelucci, who someone spoke of below. If you watch "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold" by him. . . you'll go to pieces. This is THE bass voice of all bass voices. I've never heard anything like him. And, he must have five octaves. . .
Two suggestions: try to match your mike volume to the volume of the video for all accapella; and watch Voiceplay videos until the Patreon list, they always put in a surprise after you think it is finished.
Geoffrey Castalucci has many great songs.....Way Down, Monster Mash, Sixteen tons, Headless Horseman, Take me home County Roads (is one that reminds me of West Virginia where my Parents are both from. They loved that song. And they are both buried there. I always loved the John Denver version....now I like this one too.) 😊👍
The best entry point into the journey down the VoicePlay rabbit hole, IMHO, is My Mother Told Me, Hoist the Colors, The Dragonborn Comes, and Dream On. Of course, they are so theatrical and interesting in their arrangements you can’t go wrong-enjoy!
The top three a cappella groups are Pentatonix, Voiceplay and Home Free. They are all five members with beat boxers and a bass. You need to check out Home Free too. Most reactors start with Man of Constant Sorrow. Thanks, this was fun! Also one of my favorites from Voiceplay is Enemy from Imagine Dragons ft. AleXa. They kill it!
With Halloween being just around the corner, try In The Hall Of The Mountain King. The music itself is from Edvard Grieg in 1875, the characters are trolls, and there are no lyrics. It really doesn't matter. The cauldron bubbles, the additions to the pot changes, tempo, voice changes, and it is one of my favorites. I was in band in high school and we played it. I never tired of it - but it never occurred that it could sound like that!
Well, to be technical, he is a bass... you're a baritone, in reality. Geoff is just not a bass but a LOW bass, who also has a 5 octave vocal range from over an octave lower than an average bass to a 1/2 an octave higher than most tenors.
Fun fact about this music video... when they were filming that last scene where she dropped Layne who is the beatboxer and the one who choreographed it had them redo that like 5 times and he felt so bad because they kept having to drop her lmao
Bass is Geoff CAstalucci. He is the absolute best bass you will ever hear. I suggest you watch Voiceplay's 'Oogie Boogie Song' next. Then check out Geoff singing solo 'Sixteen Tons'. You will be shocked. And have fun at your PTX concert!
You may have actually heard two people beatboxing since Geoff , the bass, also beat boxes. In addition you got to hear two baritones as Layne , the beatboxer, was originally the baritone until their beat boxer Scott Porter, who appears in their cover of HALO left to pursue an acting career. I came here from your review of Enemy, so I’ll just add a few recommendations: Warriors again from Imagine Dragons, Skyrim, which is fantastic, Hoist the Colours, Dream On, and do not miss the piece that’s coming out on Friday since it covers a metal band. They will attack just about any genre you can find from orchestral music to Disney to pop to country and now to metal.
I’d recommend Hoist the Colours or My Mother Told Me if you want to hear Eli’s rock voice. Dream on shows off more of Cesar’s voice. But basically anything you pick will be great.
Your first introduction to Geoff Castellucci I take it? 🙂 There are 3 acapella basses. Besides Geoff, Tim Foust of Homefree and Avi Kaplan formally with Pentatonix and now on his own as a singer-songwriter with his own band.
OMG!!!!! I loved your reaction to this song. Please review "Hoist the colors" or "Dragonborn comes". They are both awesome and you get to hear the bass go VERY low.
One of the big reasons I prefer Home Free or Pentatonix is that Voiceplay compose their arrangements specifically to show off Geoff's range. They'll often give him a verse and have him sing it 4 octaves lower just because he can. Mitch from Pentatonix has an incredibly high range. Pentatonix showcases it by giving him the high parts that might have gone to Kristen instead. Voiceplay are all talented singers - they don't need to lean on showing off how low Geoff can go to prove it.
Would also like to throw If I Was a Rich Man in the ring for a VoicePlay reaction. It's amazing. Oogie Boogie does show Geoff's bass range best though.
Patreon actually! 🙌 but also just suggestions in comments but it’s an ever growing list and sometime very difficult to get to things in a good time. Patreon gets it on the list for the following week
"My Mother Told Me" is Superb! They look like Viking guys.... There are a few other songs that I like better....We don't talk about Bruno, The Mermaid medley, are fun songs... Oogie Boogie, This Is Halloween and Hide and Seek (Ding dong) with Lauren Paley are great Songs for Halloween!
Please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover Dream On. You will love it. Also Voice Plays cover of The Halo theme song Halo...& The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim. You will love them as well.
Nice! I thank Supernatural for Placebo version. Get your rocker on. Placebo 2014 ruclips.net/video/HDiPmpoP3gI/видео.html Battle of the versions! Awesome how TV helps us to find the artist that is Kate Bush and how in the world did I miss her in high school? What did I do w/ my life then to miss this? I could have seen her live

Enjoy the VP journey! I'll follow your reactions to them. If you enjoyed this one, you'll love the rest of their videos. They are so fun!
It always makes me happy to watch someone discover Voiceplay ☺️
I've been a fan from their beginning..... I'm proud to say I was their 199th supporter on Patreon
Fantastic reaction 😊 I’ve subscribed to see more VoicePlay reactions please 😁 xx
Love Voice Play! Awesome reaction! Thanks ❤️ Much Love! #Hangovergang #Voice Play
Xx ❤️🇬🇧
Welcome to this rabbit hole. Happy to have ya. Guess I'm sticking around to see what's to come.
People have given you great picks for new songs, I think you will love it especially if you get one where Geoff Castellucci, the bass, actually get really low. You should also check out his solo channel. His Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold is ICONIC.
Oogie Boogie Song is the penultimate example of their talent. It's a must watch (and its Christmas themed).
You definitely got to check them out more! They have wonderful special guests every time :D
Please react to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by VoicePlay. It is ASTOUNDING.
oh boy, welcome to the Voiceplay rollercoaster....make sure the safety bar is pulled down, because you are in for one hell of a ride.
Voice Play very often features a guest singer (the woman in this video). You should check their cover of Dream On!!
I love VoicePlay! They do a phenomenal job. My favorite is Hoist the Colours or The Dragonborn Comes.
Geoffrey Castalucci has many great songs.....Way Down, Monster Mash,
Sixteen tons, Headless Horseman,
Take me home County Roads (is one that reminds me of West Virginia where my Parents are both from.
Since you liked this, I would recommend their cover of Imagine Dragons' "Enemy". Different female lead, but similar vibe.
With vp and Geoff... Always always always watch through their credits. They often add funny stuff in there
The top three a cappella groups are Pentatonix, Voiceplay and Home Free. They are all five members with beat boxers and a bass. You need to check out Home Free too. Most reactors start with Man of Constant Sorrow. Thanks, this was fun! Also one of my favorites from Voiceplay is Enemy from Imagine Dragons ft. AleXa. They kill it!
And The Bass Gang! 🙂
They're still overlooked and underrated, but they are AMAZING. 🙂
Welcome to VoicePlay!💜💜💜
With Halloween being just around the corner, try In The Hall Of The Mountain King. The music itself is from Edvard Grieg in 1875, the characters are trolls, and there are no lyrics. It really doesn't matter. The cauldron bubbles, the additions to the pot changes, tempo, voice changes, and it is one of my favorites. I was in band in high school and we played it. I never tired of it - but it never occurred that it could sound like that!
Definitely check out their Wicked Medley. Gorgeous
Yes!!! Down the rabbit hole with you!
Looking back at this video now, it must have been so hard for Geoff to not move his hands during the section where they are "frozen". 😂
Well, to be technical, he is a bass... you're a baritone, in reality. Geoff is just not a bass but a LOW bass, who also has a 5 octave vocal range from over an octave lower than an average bass to a 1/2 an octave higher than most tenors.
AHHH that is so freakin cool and impressive! I love hearing something like that, its so different! Thanks for the info!!
You have no idea what you have just got into! Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole enjoy your journey try dream on it’s absolutely stunning!
Great reaction 🙂
I love this song. I can't decide if I like this version or Our Last Night's version!
Oogie Boogie; Hoist the Colours; My Mother Told Me; Halo Theme; Sh-Boom; Baby It's Cold Outside...basically anything by VoicePlay.
Oogie boogie and dream on
Your first introduction to Geoff Castellucci I take it? 🙂 There are 3 acapella basses. Besides Geoff, Tim Foust of Homefree and Avi Kaplan formally with Pentatonix and now on his own as a singer-songwriter with his own band.
I've bopped on your channel a bit, but can't remember. Did you check out Golden Hour by Voice Play or Geoff's take on Sound of Silence?
OMG!!!!! I loved your reaction to this song. Please review "Hoist the colors" or "Dragonborn comes". They are both awesome and you get to hear the bass go VERY low.
Late to this video but you might also enjoy their cover of Warriors!
makes me think of stranger thing and react to the actual music video from her.
Their best is "Hoist the Colors" from Pirates of the Caribbean. Do yourself a favor and listen to that next. 😁
John … where is your reaction to Astronaut - MV and Live in Argentina …. Speech of Chris Martin too?
Have the MV reaction up and the live show / Speech is coming soon :) cough** (((THIS WEEK))) cough**
You have to try out Placebo’s cover of Running up this hill it’s my favourite version (maybe equal to this).
Just curious: do you take requests by PayPal or SuperChat or anything like that?
Patreon actually! 🙌 but also just suggestions in comments but it’s an ever growing list and sometime very difficult to get to things in a good time. Patreon gets it on the list for the following week
Cool, thanks for the info!
My mother told me is another good one and if you want to see the range of the bass voice check oogie boogie
Geoff is a bass dude!!!
You should check out their version of Hoist The Colors from Pirates of The Caribbean, its amazing! Great reaction!
"My Mother Told Me" is Superb! They look like Viking guys....
There are a few other songs that I like better....We don't talk about Bruno,
The Mermaid medley, are fun songs...
Oogie Boogie, This Is Halloween and Hide and Seek (Ding dong) with Lauren Paley are great Songs for Halloween!
They do an Aerosmith cover that is great but for funny their Mission Impossible just cracks me up.
Hoist The Colors by Voiceplay!
Please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover Dream On. You will love it. Also Voice Plays cover of The Halo theme song Halo...& The Dragonborn Comes Skyrim. You will love them as well.
Nice FF7 background music outro.
🙌🙌 thank you!! Love FF Music!!
Video sound too low. Need to turn that up.
Geoff can beatbox
They just dropped a cover of Metallica. Must watch.
ry geoff's solo youtube page
Low bass, not baritone 😀
Honestly just pick one you can't go wrong with any video lol
