The autobahn blast was the "cherry on top" of another great review.
Well done!
All this Steve and Jethro content is getting me excited about Evo again.
More Steve and Jethro please!!!
The reason I resubscribed!😀
Steve is breathing life back into EVO. He is one the best Automotive Journalists out there in my opinion. Very enjoyable to watch. Cheers 🍻
He is, such a beast and great driving skills. Very authentic love for these cars
That autobahn run had my heart pumping! Looks exciting but terrifying at the same time.
God... I'm a yank just imagining driving on a road where everybody understands that the default cruising lane is the one on the RIGHT, enough that you can open a 180-mph car up with confidence on a public road in the left. LANE DISCIPLINE. One can dream... or go to the autobahn, I guess.
And you guys have it better in the US than Canada. In my experience driving lots in the States. Canadians in Toronto area don’t give a damn and in fact will try to impede you if they sense you want to go faster.
I am afraid of driving much over 100mph on most highways in the US because I am always worried some idiot might pull a Crazy Ivan and turn in to my lane for absolutely no reason and with no warning. I fear this even more than getting the speeding ticket.
I have to add my 2 cents Chuck. In Japan people will move over if you flash your lights. On the Autobahn it is understood and correct action taken. In the states. We never know your intentions. Block you from passing, move over, or just speed up and slow down again. The guessing is what makes in interesting in the states. smile
@@spdkeen yep!
@@norwegianblue2017 …Exactly. You just don’t know who’s going to do what here in the states. When it comes to sharing the road, most Americans behave foolishly, selfishly and don’t take driving seriously.
Love mine, went for a 1LT w/Z51 and MR. Great on track! a very balanced and calm car at speed. Enjoy you Corvettes over that side of the pond!
That autobahn run and dash view was great, thanks for including it!
What's interesting is seeing the oil and water temp drop in the high speed run. Very efficient cooling!
It's easy to cool a car when you have airflow. I overheated the C7 Corvette far more easily on slow technical tracks.
@@MrSuchasillygoose the c7 used to overheat very quickly especially the zo6 and zr1
@@MrSuchasillygoose I never had that problem pushing hard with my C7 Z51. However, there was a guy on the Porsche reenlist forum that stated every C7 over heats at the track.
@@clipzz7868 …Yeah, I had a 2016 C7 Z06, and the stupid thing went into overheating limp mode just driving up the canyon, as Honda Accords passed me! 🤦♂️
I've been waiting for this one :) I used to sell Corvettes in the UK and have a deep affection for them. They had a lot of advanced features that they didn't get credit for. Decades ago, they had Hydro-formed chassis and Magnetic (MRRTD) Suspension for example. And who doesn't like a pushrod V8 (apart from Greta Thunberg, of course). Thank you Steve. Keep 'em coming :)
Even my 26 year old Camaro has things that none of the modern cars have , like automatic headlights and front fenders that are molded into the mirrors , and aero windshield wiper arms . GM has always been better than most people think it is .
The C7 ZR1 used the same brake rotor material and rotor manufacturing process as a McLaren Senna.
Front lift with 1k memory slots & GPS auto lift feature
@@layne4376 It actually works quite well just like torsion bar suspension on a Pickup , or 3/4 leaf springs on the back of an old jeep . It had proper dual wishbone suspension , instead of inferior McPherson suspension like so many of the cars that get way to much credit . 99% of the people who talk shit about the Corvette have never even been in one . Did you know that the front suspension on a brand new Dodge truck is the same as the front suspension on on the original Jeep XJ from the early 80's ? If it's still the best design there's no need for advancement . Chassis and suspension geometry are by far the most critical aspects of a car design , not spring material .
@@layne4376 yes they were transverse and lighter than using coil springs, plus they were not locating in their implementation, so you can design proper suspension around them. Oh, and they also had an anti-roll property, in some case replacing the anti-roll bar altogether.
In the US they have 20 more horsepower. I’d gladly give that up to have the Autobahn instead. While you envy the fact that the US spec has slightly more power, we envy your ability to actually use it. Nice drive
And just a couple of weeks away from the US release of the ZO6.....which will be several steps on from the standard C8. Exciting times.
If z06 is not a manual, then is garbage appliance like this one.
Plus, it's pretty crazy to think that Z06 is only the middle child, the Zora will turn things up to 11, supposed to be a turbo hybrid or something wacky fast like that!
@@anydaynow01 Z51 already is on 11 or 12 with 1064HP... Zora will be a notch higher up?
Us Americans are proud of this one. And let me tell you, here in the US you're talking $60k BASE price for a bare bones vehicle that can still do 0-60 in 3 seconds flat. This is why it's so hard to choose a 911 over a Vette here in the states.. the value is really in the Corvette.
That and the fact that it beat the 992 S at the Nurbruring.
Bravo on the review - You nailed it !!!!! As an owner of a C8 HTC - I got to say - I like the steering wheel .......
People say the steering wheel looks odd, and it does. but what it does so.....is give you a perfect view of the dash
An amazing car. Keep in mind that this is the base model. Just wait till you see what the Z06 can do.
Also waiting for that release....
Yeah, the Stingray is like the 911 Carrera, with the Z51 being the Carrera S. The Z06 would be the GT3 of the range, with the crazy aero package being like the RS version. I imagine the ZR1 will be like the 911 GT2 of the Corvette range. And then there are rumors of a 1,000hp AWD hybrid Corvette coming in a few years, which is more like a 918 Spyder, which is mad to think about.
Previous Z06 was a handful at 10/10ths. I suspect the Z51 equipped version will be more than enough car for most and allow one to keep it between the mustard and the mayo. Or off the tire walls.
@@dlombana161 Between the mustard and the mayo hahaha. Good one. Cannot say I have heard that before. 🤣
@@Mike.W.Dasher you’re correct the 1000hp + model will be called the Zora. That particular model will have the ZR1 5.5L twin-turbo V8 plus electric assist front drive assembly for a combine 1000hp. A very nice way to end the C8 development cycle…..
Steve Sutcliffe, love your reviews. In this one you state "It disguises its weight well but it does ultimately feel like quite a big old wagon..." The weight increase of the hard top convertible over the coupe should only be 101 lbs according to Chevrolet's own web page. I find it odd that this weight addition and a slight power decrease should make it feel like a a big old wagon compared to your own review of the Z51 coupe prior, where you stated "This thing's bloody awesome... but honestly the balance of the chassis is just brilliant...it's absolutely fab, it really is, with really lovely steering....the straight line performance is pretty titanic..the steering is so good. Congratulations Corvette, you really, really, have done the business on this car. Brilliant."
The curb weight of the base model Corvette is less than 300 lbs heavier than the base Porsche 911. It actually has a higher power/weight ratio than the Porsche. Never really heard anyone complain about the weight of this car.
Don’t think it was a complaint …merely pointing out a fact ..it is heavier than the competition
Sir, the convertible top adds 88 Lbs. The car is 1570kgs. wet.
Youll love the z06
Such critical opinions on this car compared to others (cough, Porsche) but his subtle giddy smile after he put the top down sums up the review.
Stunning video! Well done, Evo. As for the C8, this is the "plain jane" version. If you want something more fizzy, wait for the Z06 version that will set your hair on fire. I also reckon that there were a few more MPH left in that top speed run if it had been left in 6th gear for longer, but 182mph is still mighty impressive at this price point.
imho 190 mph with the US version
the last 20 hp steal ny EU regulation counts as these speeds
If this was GPS speed it would be much less, speedo always reads high in euro cars
Ze, that was really good at 182 mph with a particular filter. Top speed for the Z51 without filter is 184. The cheaper corvette without Z51 has a 194 mph top speed. All C8's shipped to Europe will be Z51 version for that edgy feeling.
182 mph on a public road! Respect!
fun fact gm claims the top speed of this car in certain configurations is 184. the euro spec is down on hp and heavier and still got within 2mph of the top speed so its nice to see they are not lying
All C8 Stingray with Z51 is 184 mph. Non Z51 is 194 mph. The wing on Z51 cars is fantastic for track racing but, adds drag.
The coupe has a removeable roof , so the chassis is designed to be roofless whether it's a folding convertible hard top or the manually removeable Targa top . That's why you can't feel any difference between the 2 , even the front engine Corvette's were built that way .
Well, to be accurate, the C7 was the 1st Corvette to apply this design from the start. The C5 Coupe, C5 Convertible, and C5 Z06 were pretty different, specifically the Z06 only being available as a Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC) because the additional engine HP/ Torque causes too much flex in the frame. The C6 Coupe and Z06 incorporated the sloping rear window for both, but maintained the higher HP/ Torque version (Z06) to come as an FRC. I think the C7 was the first Z06 with a removable targa roof panel and convertible. The C8 was the 1st to look the same from the side profile whether you get the targa or the convertible.
@@wit2pz The base models came with a removable top , and were plenty stiff or rigid enough because that was part of the design . The C6 Z06 had a all aluminum chassis that made it even more rigid , than the fixed roof could . Every base model from C5 up was designed with a removable top in mind , the lower chassis made up for not having a roof .
@@JerryHenderson72 not all base models, specifically the C5 had that removable roof. The FRC was designed before the Z06, but was the only design structurally rigid enough for the higher powered engine.
@@wit2pz The base C3, C4, C5, C6, and C7's dont all have the T top ???
@@The_Garnetts the base models have the removable targa/ T-tops. What I'm saying is that not all base models had the structural rigidity to handle the higher horsepower variants (C5/C6 Z06) in targa form. That's why the C5 Z06 was fitted to the Fixed Roof Coupe, because it was structurally rigid enough to handle the additional power. The flaw in the C5 Z06 was the notchback design, which had more wind resistance than the sloped rear glass of the Base C5 Coupe. The Coupe's top speed was faster than the Z06 because of the notchback rear. They addressed this in the C6 Z06, which kept the rear glass sloped. The C7 was the first with the removable targa top in the Z06 variant.
2:04… and this is why I’m a fan of the C8
Very cool to see Jethro and Steve + new stuff from Evo again. Now just need these in 4K!
A big 👍👍 up to Chevrolet, when a seasoned car tester like Steve can only not pick at the cars dynamics, praise the gearbox and brakes, then you know just how good a sports car ,your £85'000 is buying you.
The C8 is finally the Corvette model that finally won over the Brits.
Terry, there is a small Corvette following in Europe. At the end of the day a car guy/gal just loves cars.
The convertible loses the beautiful glass window showing off that beautiful v8 engine.
It gains the ability to open the rear window at any speed and enjoy the engine sound more. Or the top fully down at speed while maintaining boot volume larger than just about any convertible on the market, hard top or otherwise.
Which I don’t mind lol
I bought the convertible just for how great it looks for 3/4 rear view. It looks like something much much more high end.
I’m surprised he said 0-60 in 3.5. I know it’s down a bit on power, but the US spec is getting regularly getting 2.8’s, from my own indicated 2.8’s traction has been the limiting factor and not power. Great video. BTW, this is my first American car let alone Corvette ( I’ve always been a 911 fan) but I LOVE it. Due to crazy markups I’ve been offered a straight trade for a new 992, but I’m keeping my convertible C8.
Not sure if changing from 6->7 on the autobahn was a good idea for top speed run. Love Steve as a reviewer. Ace as always.
End clip absolutely mental. Hats off you've got titanium jewels good sir.
I can see why Chris Harris considers Sutcliffe to be one of the fastest drivers !
Looking sharp, SS. Great review as well, as always. Thanks mate
It's incredible there's a public highway somewhere across the ocean where it's perfectly legal to pass some guy in a minivan at 182mph. lol love that. It was pretty nice of the guy to wave to you as you passed by too. Must be a corvette fan
My new favorite car
Damn that embargo dropped hard today on this car. The flood gates opened.
Steeeve, as someone who use that part of A1 Autobahn on a daily basis I could confirm it's downhill configuration 😆✌
With styling that only its mother would love
I live in the States and have seen quite a few of these and it never ceases to amaze me how many times i see it and think it's an exotic supercar like a Mclaren or Ferrari. It's probably fooled me 50 times easily. And there are Mclarens and Ferraris R8s and a couple Lambos near where i live. I see them routinely. In real life this is a very good looking car especially in Ferrari red. Easily mistaken for a Ferrari when it's coming up behind you. But up close you can tell what it is and it still holds up very well.
Take a look at the new Lotus Emira as well
I’ve been fooled by these a few times myself. It’s incredible that there’s a car with that kind of performance, and those wild looks, at such a price. To put it into perspective, the power and performance is F40-level, the wall-poster car of choice for people my age. That’s epic.
I'm surprised because I find it a terrible styled car with some very awkward lines, nothing like a ferrari or mclaren
I own one and even I have been fooled. My last car was a Ferrari and many people think that is what I am still driving. I actually like it better than my Ferrari or Jag FType R series that sounds better than any of them.
@@dunckeith Duncan, I have. If, the C8 ZO6 does not sit in my garage next year the Lotus Emira will occupy the spot.
Now that was a good review.
You really got to have petrol in your veins to pass other cars on the road at 180mph!
A little brass in the huevos doesn't hurt either 😏
Can’t wait for the triple tests. Lotus Emira V6, Porsche Cayman GTS and Chevrolet Corvette 3LT.
Comparing it with the Cayman ist just a horrible idea. I've driven Caymans, love them, still, you simply don't compare them with a cheaper car that can put out 700hp on stock internals. When it comes to that comparsion the Cayman can be considered a luxury car. The fact that a Cayman drives better is not a reason to compare them. Compare it with a 911 if you have to compare it to a Porsche. The 911 is dull and boring, the Corvette is more affordable, has as much performance potential as more expensive 911s and isn't a boring car. So the only part where any Porsche can beat the Corvette is if you stop considering price tags or if you really don't care about improving your car for the track at all and either don't want to set laptimes or spend hundreds of thousands to get a track prepped 911.
@@アマ-p2l Why would you even mention tuning a car to 700bhp or tuning them in any way. I’m talking about comparing them for what they are, mid engined, RWD sports cars that are around the same price.
@@アマ-p2l What are you on about? You said in your own comment that the Cayman drives better literally making your argument irrelevant 🤣. The original commenter didn’t mention which car drove better he/she just said that they can’t wait for the triple test and those 3 cars make the most sense. Imagine comparing any corvette with a 911 🤣 the 911 is leagues apart.
@@jr150 How is it leagues apart? The cheapest new 385hp Carrera S on sale right now is 130,000€ in Germany. You would have to be blind to be unable to see how a mid-engined supercar Corvette that you can modify into an absolute beast easily is a better option depending on what you want. And it doesn't just overwhelm the 911 in a few aspects, the more track oriented versions will best it at what it identifies with and probably still be cheaper. Unless you care about fuel consumption the Caymans can't be compared with it, they only beat it in terms of luxury and driving better through corners because it's much smaller. If you don't see how an affordable mid engined V8 supercar is an arch-rival for the top of Porsches range, meaning the 911, then I can't open your eyes for you.
@@アマ-p2l You’re absolutely clueless. The fact that you’re even referring to a Corvette as a supercar proves you know nothing.
So good to see Steve here. He deserves higher budged productions.
After watching this 6 months later - All I can say: WOW - Well Done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent video sir! The front lift has GPS assistance with 1k programmable locations with automatic lift upto 35mph.
There is no other car that brings that much smiles for the price.
I'm not sure if Portofino M is worth 2 of these, plus a Fiesta ST and a nice holiday.. ?
Jabiqq, I'm a big Corvette guy and plan to buy the C8 ZO6 when the ordering booth opens. The Portofino M has a lot going for it the least of which is the name (Ferrari). Then comes the re-sell value and add to that the 2 plus 2. Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed my C7, and Porsche but, the Ferrari is in a different category in my opinion.
This type of review feeds my soul and fills me with joy that cars like this are still being made and dont require millionaire status to own, then I remember politicians are prematurely bringing the second golden age of performance to an end. Yes I know a performance oriented EV can trounce the Vette and even many ultra expensive super/hypercars in a straight line...but none will have the symphony of sound and vibrations from a V8/10/12 just behind your head. I hear Germany is even contemplating speed limits on the autobahn, and if that happens it will truly signal the end of a glorious era. I started driving in the late 90's, and the list of affordable cars for a teen meant crappy and slow used cars from the 80's/early 90's..I don't take the second performance golden age of the mid 2k's to present for granted. As soon as production gets back on track and used cars are no longer inflated in price I will look to grab myself a 3-4 year old Mustang GT with a manual to tide me over when the age of nothing but EV's arrives much sooner than anyone could imagine just 5 years ago. Great review btw..nobody cares about the infotainment system, cupholders or cargo capacity of a Vette...just how it sounds and feels to drive. You nailed it😎
Thanks!. I didn't know Germany is contemplating speed limits on the Autobahn. Here is the states we are jealous but, happy that such a highway exists.
@@ronretired282 It has been talked about in years past, but it seems like actual support for it is growing these days.
Great to see more of Mr Sutcliffe. Thanks EVO. 🙃🦘🇦🇺
You can drive a Vette everyday and not worry about it.. A V8 Chevy is a very reliable motor
Nice work Steve. Two good reviews in less than a week! Is EVO back?
Evo is back online. Welcome back
I love it! I really want a Z06 Convertible but I'd be happy with a Z51 Convertible. Great review!
Yes, it's a bit "chunky" if your comparing it to a cayman..or miata for that matter. if you want a car that looks like a toy on the road get one of those. The C8 is a real-size car for "big boys."
Great video, fun fact. The z51 package has quicker 0-60s but actually lowers top end speed by 10mph due to the rear spoiler drag. You may have hit 192 without it if you could keep it steady.
C8, is the best Corvette yet. And there's still a Grand Sport, Z06 & ZR1 to come. Its one of the best Super Cars money can buy.
E-Ray, ZO6, ZORA/ZR1. There, I fixed it for u. LOL
What Mustang this is the new bad boy in the UK. Love to have the new Corvette C8
To hell with the weight, with how sharp the throttle and torque delivery is, and with upcoming Z06 and 0
ZR1 models you know that weight is there to simply be shed in later models
The weight is 1570 not 1700 plus
Could not do that legally in the US! Awesome!!
That thing you point out at 7:37? We call that "Permagrin"
who cares about the car, welcome back steve, damn it's good to get your opinions again! excellent review as usual by the way and that autobahn run . . . wish i were there dude, wish i were there
Love corvettes,..I bought my dad an 86 tpi..in 15 years of use ,1 alternator and a set of tyres, a lot of reviews talk about how there not quite up to the exotica, but with the these cars come huge garage and sevice bills…with a corvette you can service on your drive for pennies..and with the 700r4 tall overdrive not to bad on fuel..🙂
Tom, you make me feel a shame. I did buy my father a wallet once. Does that count? (smile) Older Corvettes are easy to work on however, muscle cars from the same era have more engine compartment space for the win.
Excellent review as always Steve! Personally I do find the C8 design somewhat generic and awkward looking in lighter colours, to my eyes would look better in a dark blue, grey or black. That said, great to see the C8 get the recognition that it deserves, the Z06 could be a tasty appetizer prior to the main course ZR1 which should be epic bang for the buck/pound!
great review , thats the type of corvette i would add a victor racing static c8 wing 🥵
Very well done, I enjoyed that! Especially that silly top speed run? What were you guys thinking? As my mom used to say, "that's dangerous!"
I have seen this car in person up close, it's a nice looking car when you are next to it. You do think it is a ferrari. It's only a fraction of the price of the supercars, and with the ability to raise up to go over speed bumps (and remember where they are) is one of the most practical supercars ever made, because those damn speed bumps are everywhere now. One of the reasons people have gravitated towards large wheeled vehicles like pickups and SUV's.
Would the GT1 seats be more comfortable for daily driving than the GT2 seats, assuming they are both in a 2LT?
I'm considering the LT3 but I can't choose GT1 seats and if they are more comfortable that's more important to me.
Excellent. More Steve, please!
Can you remove the gpf filters?
The wind in the cabin would have been a lot less if you'd put up the rear window which acts as a windbreak.
Speed gain on the autobahn was on the slow side. Needs more power.
George, we don't have an Autobahn in the states (smile). Unless you are in Texas we have a lot of 55 Mph (88kph) roads.
So buy this or a used McLaren (12C, 650S or 570S/GT) ?
What a really good review.
excelent car.
This looks promising. I’m looking forward to seeing the (hopefully) inevitable lightweight, hotted up version. In the meantime, would I have this instead of a Boxster GTS? Yeah, I would.
The Boxster GTS is a nice car. I think it's $87K in the states. If, I was going the GT route it would be a GT4 vice GTS for me. I'm all in for the new C8 ZO6 but, that GT3 looks promising.
Where and when can you buy it ?
Is there only one dealer in the whole of the UK you can order these from?
Dang great video, and one sweet car! We’ll done on both fronts!!
Steve is a wizard.
Great review as usual New corvette is a gem
It was noisy past 160mph and it took time to pile speed on past 140mph. Having driven an F80 M3 flat out on the autobahn, the Corvette was slower acceleratating at the top end than the M3, at least until the M3 slammed hard into it's limiter at 268kmh/166mph
Craig, with the exception of your accelerating comment which could have some merit most C8 car reviewers find it better insulated (noise) and more stable at high speeds when compared to the 992.
Can you review the z06, its pretty godly
You’ve gotta have some big balls to do that at the end!
So, the OPF filter costs about 25hp to the European spec C8! That will make a comparison with the base 911, Cayman and Boxster GTS even more exciting!
Mar, it's funny but I heard that same 25hp lost as well however, the reviewer ran 182mph with the filter. The top speed of this car is 184mph.
Sport cars to be used mainly on roads, not on tracks, aren’t purchased just on performance numbers, but on emotional feelings. The design of this Corvette may be appealing for a kid who loves mangas and mazinga, therefore I guess that for a European with some gray hairs a Porsche will be always a better choice.
ZO6 or ZR1 are going to be very interesting...
I believe the Z06 power target is 675bhp N/A, the ZR1 is 850bhp twin turbo both 5.5 liter flat plane crank DOHC V8
@@scottbowers7248 Scott, I hope you are correct. In either case I'm all in for a C8 ZO6.
I must say this car looks so much better in the flesh
I would hope so because it looks very ugly to my eyes , a real shame
Jase6370 when you see it up close you will change your view
That's surprisingly quick off the mark for an 1.8 ton car.
Gottlieb, the wet weight is 1570 kgs.
Sweet video great stuff Steve.
Looks awkward to me, slightly too long in the rear. But no denying that V8 😍
I absolutely agree with your assessment the 1st time I saw the pictures/videos of the car. But in person - It looks different and a whole lot better. Trust me - I got one in my garage...
Don't lug the engine ar 4500rpm. Let it rev in 6th
What model year?
Great car! What a shame it seems so difficult to actually order one … at least in switzerland where I live…

I'm having trouble deciding on Z51 HTC or Z06 W/Z07 PACKAGE coupe (dont knowing I can afford the HTC , just being honest)
I drove the Z51 on track at Corvette headquarters and with Track alignment is amazing. Buuuut I want the banshee wail of the Flat plane crank & lighter car!
Boywonder, I'm all in for $150K or less C8 ZO6 at MSRP. Convertible version.
Great ride!!!
I see Steve Sutcliffe - I hit view! Simple!
I cant wait to see one in showrooms - Might need to give one a go as I recon that its great value for the appeal and driving dynamics - cause if Steve says its good, I believe it!
I see Steve, I immediately stop watching. I understand that's an unpopular opinion, but something about the way he presents has always irritated me. I'd much rather read his review than watch it, because he clearly knows what he's talking about, I just don't like his delivery.
C8 does 3 to 60 in mid 3’s. Car laps faster than a GT4 on all but the smallest tracks.
It might be the cheapest way to go 182mph and live. Will the Cayman S go 182?
I think all EU cars will be Z51 equipped. Top speed limited to 184 in the states and 182 with particular filler in Europe. The faster version C8 Stingray base top speed is 194 mph. With a particular filter it would be 192mph however, that version is not being shipped to Europe.
Shame you guys aren't getting the full 495bhp out of the motor in the U.K. this means the ZO6, E-Ray, ZR-1 and Zora versions will be underpowered for the euro market as well!!
Reminder with the weight comparison, the Audi R8 DOES weigh the exact same in similar configuration, 1775kgm to 1775kgm.
Sir, the C8 is around 1570 kgm wet.
@@ronretired282 I know, I would have corrected them on it, but I thought that maybe the European version is way heavier for some reason, so I went with a comparison instead
You guys missed out by not using the recording feature on the car. "PDR" performance data recorder. gives you a video with all the car data overlaid. SD car in the glove box.
The Z06 is coming...
