  • In this Day 2 video, I go for an early morning walk on the beach by myself as the sun rose over the coconut trees. Expecting to see the clean, sandy seashore of yesterday, I was shocked but not surprised by the piles of trash strewn along the shoreline, some plastic garbage floating just offshore. Yet the presence of local Filipinos, including fisherman trying to sell their morning catch of fish from the polluted waters of Subic Bau, and families with young children taking a dip in the shallow waters ignoring the garbage nearby, told the story of people trying to live a normal life and scrape a living despite the hostile environment. I felt sorry for the stray dogs, feral cats and skinny chickens who had to pick through the trash for food to stay alive.
    Background:
Top on our list of things to do during my two-week visit with my daughter, Vanessa and her four children, my grandchildren, was to spend a couple days at a beach resort. Vanessa and her husband, Mark, selected the iCove Beach Hotel at Subic Bay. It is less than an hour-and-a-half’s drive from their house, and hotel did not require reservations in advance.
