The hardest I’ve heard him laugh previously was during the Harada’s Bar interview when Harada explained that he doesn’t wear hats and proceeded to wear Sakurai’s to prove his point.
I've been wanting to ask about Sakurai doing a multi-fighting game playthrough to showcase the current state of the genre that inspired him to create Smash Bros. If it happens, my fingers are crossed so that he could also play Last Blade 2 to give us the insider developer story on how Hibiki became so popular relative to the series despite having a few degrees of separation from the main character and main storyline (I've been on a Last Blade binge for the past few days so forgive me).
That Major Havoc game looks really cutting edge for its time. The space shooting section at first glance looked like a HD game inspired by arcade games
That's vector graphics for you. They could pull 1024×768 no sweat. Unfortunately, Atari's color vector hardware then also had heat problems, which also explains why Tempest fell off in popularity. Battlezone didn't use real color vector graphics, but simply had colored plastic on the monitor, so it didn't suffer the same issues.
That is something so great about video game history, the early games are so much simpler and quick to get into, that you can really go on a tour, discover and explore all the different mechanics and their evolution in a relatively short amount of time. And you can experience them for yourself! I am really enjoying these guided tours into history with mister Sakurai.
Another fantastic video. Also as soon as Ghosts and Goblins came out and Akino said "Mr. Sakurai." " Can I sit this one out?" I laughed so hard. I felt that on an emotional level. lol Ghosts and Goblins is so fun but sooo hard.
There is a old game center cx episode where he was so bad that the staff agreed for him to take the game home and practice it. He was sp dedicated he took the game with him in Gameboy sp form and practiced before and after his meet up events. The red arimer was his nemesis throughout.
I've heard from @JeremyParish often enough how Xevious is one of the three primordial games from which all other Japanese video games originate from, but seeing Sakurai explain about it in such detail shows how *absolutely groundbreaking* it truly was! (0 Days without a Xevious reference)

I wish the Famicom Detective Club had an extra mode explaining cultural, historical, and language, as they keep on talking about how the name of the school is weird, but I don't understand enough Japanese to know what's so weird about it..! 😅
@@TeruteruBozusama The Steins;Gate VN has this neat feature where they provided you with a glossary for Japanese-specific slangs that helped understand the game better, especially since it's deeply entrenched in Otaku-culture. Wished more games implemented that.
These two have an amazing dynamic! I love that Sakurai is very excited and nerding out about the technical aspects of the games, while Arino is making witty quips and trying his best to survive! Very entertaining!
If there’s anything I want to come out of this series, I hope Sakurai takes a cue from Arino-kacho’s personal RUclips channel and just does mindless videos visiting old game centers and opening merch lottery tickets. I want to hear Sakurai’s thoughts on electromechanical. Maybe even something on medalge…
Arino Kacho.... you're a shady one, ain't ya, when it comes to Mario Bros? LoL. What a great video. This is turning into one of my top RUclips channels to follow.
Namco were known for having items or characters in games show up in later titles as easter eggs. One of the later "fruits" you eat for bonus points in Pac-Man is a Galaxian, for example.
The bit Sakurai-san mentioned about it being hard to talk and play at the same time reminds me of how that can be a strategy in competitions. I swear, there's been a few times I've won a round of Smash, just by keeping a conversation going with my opponent.
Pro Tip when playing Ghosts 'N Goblins: Patience, patience, patience! If you try to rush the enemies you'll likely die as they overwhelm you. The key is to be a little more patient and take them out before they become a problem, like what Sakurai does with the first Red Arremer. I was really pleased to see the game featured here as GnG is one of my favorite franchises (I'm proud to say I've beaten all of them at least once :) )
You make the Princess Prin Prin Proud...Also Nice Mega Man profile pic. Also, I got the Entire Mega Man Legacy Collection (Well Maybe... They still haven't released Legends and Star Force)
Never in my lifetime did I think I would be witnessing something like this, But 2023 is also the year when Takeshi's Castle made a return. I love both programs.
One thing about Ghosts and Goblins is that it's one of the few games, during that time, that makes you play it over and over again until you beat the boss of the game with a specific weapon. Otherwise, it's a continuous cycle.
If I remember the Game Center CX episode for it correctly, the show staff didn't tell Arino that a second run was required to get the good ending until he had gotten the first one. He had been trying for hours and multiple days, to the point where the staff lent him the game to practice off screen. His reaction was priceless!
Seeing Sakurai describe Gradius as perfection brings a huge smile to my face. Konami couldn't miss back in the NES era. Still one of the greatest game companies to this day! Up next is Kunio and Space Harrier!! That means they'll definitely play Outrun for the grand finale and I can't see a more fitting end!!
I scrambled to find these 2 games on Switch: "Star Force" (it's in "Arcade Archives"), and "Major Havoc" (it's in both "Atari Flashback Classics" and "Atari 50" collections).
Oh yeah. The story behind Smash was that he was playing a Street Fighter or KOF cabinet in an arcade once and the way the machines were networked, he was matched against another player in the arcade and mercilessly stomped them, but it turned out it was a woman there with her boyfriend that was first timing the game. He felt bad and thought about how to make a more accessible fighting game, which is great because Smash is probably the only fighting game I have the mental bandwidth for!
The first game is like a precursor to Ikari Warriors, one of the first few arcade games I got into! Super cool! Those are some complicated-sounding controls, I can see where SNK's version got their idea from. I also played Pac-Land, and that game is BRUTAL. It had three face-buttons, easily a whole palm apart from one another, and you had to rapid-tap Left and Right with rhythm to build momentum, and the jump button was right in the middle. It made Pac-Man *EXTREMELY HARD* to control with any degree of accuracy, which is sad because it's otherwise really top notch for it's time!
And now, the second part! Glad to see you two are still having fun, and I can't wait to see how this all ends! By the way, this was the first time I had interacted in the premiere of a Sakurai video specifically, so there's some neat trivia!
Hope they mention Defender because that game was an inspiration to many shooter games including Fantasy Zone. And yes in the early 80s American Games were going for Vector Graphics but the crash hampered game dev in the West and the more colorful raster images of Japanese games became the norm.

Given that Hideki Kamiya recently started a RUclips channel and said he cannot work in game development for a year due to contractual obligations, maybe that’s another crossover idea?
I don't think I've ever heard Sakurai laugh so hard. Glad the collab was as fun to do as it is to watch.
The hardest I’ve heard him laugh previously was during the Harada’s Bar interview when Harada explained that he doesn’t wear hats and proceeded to wear Sakurai’s to prove his point.

AH that Ghost and Goblins Episode Reference.
To Quote the Famous Episode:
"If I play anymore of this, I might start hating video games"
i am loving to see Sakurai gaming

I love the chemistry these two have, they seem to be having so much fun!
To think Sakurai was already winning both in survival AND in-game score despite having the laggy monitor. What an absolute beast of a gamer.
Arino Kacho.... you're a shady one, ain't ya, when it comes to Mario Bros? LoL. What a great video. This is turning into one of my top RUclips channels to follow.
Sakurai's spider senses on fleek!
Im only just now getting arround to these and I really love them. TY Sakurai for getting these subtitled.
Haha Sorry Arino-san, but the Father of all Let's Play is Marcus with his tv show "Level one" that got released in 1998 in France
These two videos showed me how different games were made back in the day compared to Japan and the West.
Didn't know where the Special Flag came from in Smash before this. Thank you, Sakurai.
It's had several appearances in Namco games, the first appearance is actually in an arcade game called Rally-X

Sakurai going far in Gradius is pretty impressive!
Sakurai: "I'm not very good at Gradius."
The whole Xevious section had me thinking about the arcade in Earthbound
"I'm not great at Gradius" and yet, Sakurai was GAMING without a care.

We learned that not only Sakurai san makes really good games, But he’s also Good at playing them too!
Game designers tend to be pretty good at them, since they understand all the small things that makes it tick.
More importantly is that he's very knowledgeable about each of them.
