Yesterday I caught myself emotional eating. I made myself a hot fudge sundae at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. If you find yourself grazing in the kitchen and not knowing why, get your head out of the fridge for a sec to get a grip on what’s going on:
True hunger develops slowly over time.
    Emotional hunger comes on suddenly.
If you feel full, all good.
If you feel guilty it may have been some emotional eating.
Please do not make yourself wrong if you realize you too have been emotional eating. Food and emotions get complicated. To empower yourself, try to stay conscious about whether you’re truly hungry or you’re feeding emotional hunger.
    Try this:
If you can name the deeper feeling that’s making you reach for a sundae in the middle of the day, that self awareness gives you the power to make a choice.
There’s nothing wrong with having a sundae at 2pm if that empowers you. Being conscious about what you’re doing and WHY is the key.
I promised I would report back and today I'm following my own advice, by paying attention to what I’m feeling and it’s working- I haven’t fed my emotions, instead I’ve just felt them.

I've been emotionally binge eating my feelings. I'm in such a horrible place right now. My mom passed away in November and I've been using food as a crutch. It's out of control. I've gained over 50 lbs in a little over 7 months. I need help. My health is deteriorating. Thank you for reading this. Blessings.

I know exactly what you’re going through…been binge-eating for the past two years due to some things that have suddenly happened that are literally making me extremely suicidal. I don’t even dare to weigh myself, but I know I’ve gone up a size, minimum, if not, two. And this depresses me even more, which drives me to eat even more. I was super skinny my whole life, so this is extremely hard for me. But I tell myself I can and need to keep binging as I won’t live much longer anyway, so why should I care. It’s a vicious cycle, indeed. But food is the only thing that provides any kind of solace for me, nothing else whatsoever. So I can’t get out of this horrible cycle. What can I say? Binging is the only thing that’s making me feel like hanging on and not go kill myself, for now. Hope you get some help, like therapy. As for me, I don’t even want to do that because nothing will change my problems that are causing all this pain for me and simply just losing the will to go on. Sorry about your mom, I truly hope you get some help soon.

@@CrystallyLavender Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry that you're suffering, but I appreciate that you took the time and shared your story with me. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one suffering from this disease. I do see a counselor, unfortunately she is retiring. I'm happy for her but, like previous counselors, I have to start all over and tell my story again. Ugh! Thanks again for reaching out to me. We do recover. But it's just so damn hard at times. Be blessed.💙💜

@@gracescape6729 Susan, yes, I hate starting with new therapists! Know exactly what you mean. I have a suggestion, might be hard to do. But I sometimes fast for 24 hours straight after binging, and it slows down the momentum to binge, at least temporarily. And sometimes I can be good for a week or so. Try it, might help you jumpstart a new diet. Because even losing a pound, or simply just cutting down on your intake could give you an incentive to start over. Who knows, maybe if you do this for a week and notice a slightly smaller tummy, it might give you a little confidence to at least binge less often and drop a pound or two. Anything that might encourage you to binge less often could help you get into a less destructive way of dealing with the difficulties of life. Sorry, I don’t mean destructive in a bad way, I’m only saying that because I feel like I am being self-destructive by binging beyond control. Really hope you feel better and can lose even just a little weight.

@@CrystallyLavender Thank you so much for the suggestion. I never would have thought to fast. Fasting for me is not only good for my body, but, in a spiritual way, brings me closer to God. They talk about fasting all through the Bible. Thank you! I'll keep you posted on my progress.

@@gracescape6729 oh my goodness. Losing your counselor on top of everything else is dreadful. Years ago when I was seeing a counselor he moved on to another practice (far away) and I took it personally. I see now that ‘moving on’ is just part of the American culture, but at the time it was so tough! It happened a couple more times over the span of a few years-I just started saying ‘ Jeez, I hate breaking in a new guy’. At the risk of sounding like a cliche, I will say this could be a blessing in disguise. Your new counselor may offer insights that are new or delivered in such a way that you come to some realizations that never occurred to you before. Stay strong (because you are, or you wouldn’t be trying so hard to get better) and keep working on it. I am rooting for you!

Key Point to stop binge eating: When you feel triggers "Take a deep breath" and ask yourself- "What am I feeling? Why am I reaching for this food... am I hungry? or am I trying to soothe or comfort or distract myself?"
To all of you stay healthy, stay humble, never let your emotions destroy you. Have a good day.

I overcame compulsive eating over thirty years ago. Pinpointing and resolving the emotional issues that caused me to 'eat when full' enabled me to heal my emotional eating. I also teach what healed me. Asking 'Am I hungry?' is a good start. Yes you know it is emotional eating if you are not even physically hungry.

Whoa... That's how I'm feeling, inadequate. Nailed it, and my obsession for food is diminished.... that's amazing... I've been sitting here trying to figure out how I can not indulge the monster again, tried everything, nothing made sense. But inadequate is exactly it. Dang, you're selling that word wheel like a boss. Here I was thinking I needed to soothe myself, take some time to heal, deep breathing, meditate, give myself a hug, and that eventually over time I might feel better if I keep it up......but just hearing that word I instantly felt relief. The compulsion vanished in an instant. So THANK YOU!!

I just love, love, love her! She takes the words out of my mouth! I'm also a Libra, and must constantly catch myself swinging from " better not eat that " to "I'm definitely gonna eat that". I have been involved with fitness v long time, and did plenty of strict diets from 19-28 and again 30-34. After my child, I was too thin while eating alot. Now I give myself permission to eat what I want, but I incorporate self talk with healthy eating most days... Guilt makes you miserable and leads to more overeating, and worse: bingeing which is being out of control.

Weird bla bla. I eat alot as a copping mechanism, I'm hating my body now I don't like my figure. Mental health is extremely underrated in india. Mental health concepts doesn't exist in indian households,,,,, parents don't give importance to their children's mental health and most of the teens come to youtube for health to help themself , to understand themself. Good advice, however, sometimes it is ok to eat something simply to pick you up and of course not expect the ice-cream to fix your emotion but simply to give you a bit of joy. Food is one of the coping tools as well if we choose to do so it's ok but it shouldn't be the only one coping mechanism and used too often. If we pick food from our list it's also important to remember that we should focus on eating it mindfully and truly enjoy it but also do not overeat as we adding another issue which stomach ache.

Nice work. Many people find that when they are eating at times they aren't hungry, it is usually due to increased stress or negative emotions. You can interrupt the process by practicing breathing exercises and meditation to reduce stress and increase relaxation . This will also increase positive thinking , helping you work through your stressors in a more effective manner.

I am also thinking somewhere along the lines. If you feel like you cannot write in the moment go ahead and do something else to clear your mind or just plainly rest/get some sleep. I also feel you are worrying too much about the end product and should be more focused on the process of the writing in the moment and absolutely nothing else. You are honestly beating yourself for no real reason other than feeling anxious and somewhat stuck, what is normal to feel in your situation as a writer. I do understand anxiety and trying to escape this uncomfortable feeling and just distraction yourself

Me, just finished eating portion of home made salted caramel gelato. Sitting in the sunshine, asking myself if this is emotional eating. Well this particularly not. But those salted peanuts I am here and there picking during working hours yes. And it could tell me that my adrenalin glands are tired. But I need to find out what do I feel. I will check the wheel but we need Mel to give it a sense. Thank you Mel, as you are right.
