Fun fact. All the patrol gems (minus exceptions like Phos and antarc) have a hardness above obsidian. This means, in universe, they physically can't be hurt by their own weapons. They're perfectly designed to fight the lunarians with them. (manga spoilers below)
In contrast Bort's new whip is made out of the diamond from his hair which is the hardest it can be. That combined with the blunt force nature of a whip makes perfectly designed to fight other gems rather than lunarians. On earth, Phos particularly is being seen as an enimy without doubt.
so that means that phos is the only one who could have chopped their own arms off with them in that one scene. so the thought of self dismemberment could have only happened (using their own weapons) to antarc or phos. thats cool and depressing.
all gems above the hardness 5 are able to fight. (5 is the hardness of obsidian)
They are overreacting with the bortz whip. Just punch Phos, there's legit 1 gem that couldn't do that. They all already shattered the FUCK out of Phos just by chucking their swords.
@@Angel_Underscore take note that phos's head was made of lapis lazuli at that time, and even then the bortz whip was used against the other moon gems in general bc phos wasnt their only enemy (dia broke all the way in half bc of the whip)
Fun-fact: The Land of the Lustrous manga came before Steven universe, while Steven universe was created in 2013, the original manga was created in October of 2012. The anime aired between October and December of 2017, which makes some believe that Steven universe was first, even though, as stated, it was originally made as a manga in 2012.
i once read a manga magazine in a library saying "so what steven universe but anime?" then specified this
Even Sailor Moon uses gems and minerals as names for the enemies.

It would make sense if it were phantom quartz because when ghost breaks another quartz is underneath with a completely different personality
yeah they were most likley named ghost quartz due to translation

makes total sense that it reminded you of Phantom Quartz given the fact that behind Ghost was Cairngnorm all along...
2 years late, just saying the character IS Phantom Quartz. "Phantom" became "Ghost" in translation.

I know this series is essential over, but I would have loved to hear a bit about Rutile. There are a few others too like Euclase, Watermelon Tourmaline, and Zircon; but Rutile is my favorite character
