The lyrics consist of a verse from the Old Norse poem Hyndluljóð and the recitation of reconstructed Proto Norse names of the runes of the Elder Futhark. There is also the hummed or growled words for example "Vaki" ("awake"). The Old Norse verse is pronounced in Modern Icelandic. Old Norse is the origin of the modern languages Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish. Modern Icelandic is the language that has changed the least over the years, so for a modern Icelander to read Old Norse is similar to an modern English speaker reading Shakespeare.
I dont know, I thought Icelandic was „re-norsified” so to speak at some point. Just like Romanian was re-latinised in around the XVIII-XIX centuries. I might be wrong though.
To add to this during the time of Danelaw (When Norse and Danes ruled parts of Modern day UK) Old Norse and Old English speakers could communicate to each other as both are Germanic languages at their core ;). Those the convos would have been day to day things and minor trade not detailed conversations lol
I am not so sure that Norse didn’t have the TL sound, because I noticed that even Norn has words spellt adle or adla which is because words like alle or alla were pronounced with a T / D sound, which most likely came from West Norse, so maybe Norse did have the TL / DL sound too, plus there is no W sound in West Norse and the V is always pronounced V like in Icelandic and Faroese, but no one teaches the correct West Norse pronunciation with V sound, unfortunately, but it’s very important to know the right pronunciation rules if one is a learner!
Re singing, this singer sings almost entirely in chest voice, and this song was actually sung in a lower range than usual, but in SæKonungar and in Grótti and ValFreyjuDrápa and Hross and Valhalla she belts in chest voice in a way higher pitch, and in the song Níu she uses both mixed voice and chest voice, but in this song I don’t think she went into mixed voice at all, and it’s probably just the way it was sang that makes it sound like there was a subtle transition to mixed voice a few times, but it was probably just less supported chest voice or singing right at the edge, like, kind of between chest voice and mixed voice tho without fully going into mixed voice, because chest voice can also sound a bit like mixed voice sometimes when singing at the edge and in a less supported way, and, even though there’s a thin line between the two, so it’s very easy to switch between the two, medium lyric sopranos with light and bright tone such as this singer and the 2nd Nightwish singer that sang Storytime almost never go into mixed voice, from what I have noticed, and seem to prefer singing almost always in chest voice, which also makes the singing sound more professional and more natural than using mixed voice, and the style of singing used in this song is similar to the style of singing used in certain Within Temptation songs, whose singer also has about same vocal height and tone lightness, so normally when having a higher voice like that there is no real need to truly go into mixed voice, as these singers can belt in chest around F5 and G#5, so mixed voice is very rarely used mostly to add different textures to certain somgs, but, as it was noted in the video, the vocal strength is something that one immediately notices, which makes sense, as the higher a singer’s voice is, the more powerful it is naturally, so the voice of a medium lyric soprano can naturally cover all other voices that are lower, so if two singers sang 2gether using the same vocal technique and the same intensity and pitch, the higher voice would naturally cover the lower voice, as higher voices are naturally stronger and louder!
And, re head voice, I must say that head voice isn’t used by most singers, as head voice starts around C6 and is a bit harder to access, so usually only a few opera singers that do coloratura staccatos use actual head voice, which has a very harmonic sound that is very full, because one has to be able to sing higher, above C6, to be able to access the head voice, and many times singers that do D6 or a bit higher still don’t go into head voice and use mixed voice instead, because mixed voice is easier to use as it’s pretty flexible and it sounds louder, so even certain opera singers don’t use head voice, but two singers that use actual head voice are Erna Sack and Dessay in operas such as Voices Of Spring and The Doll Song etc, so the coloratura parts from those operas are a good example of head voice, so one can hear how harmonic it sounds, compared to mixed voice, which has an airier or even edgier sound sometimes, depending on technique, like, when one uses a reinforced falsetto technique the mixed voice can sound extremely edgy, but it’s not harmonic like head voice tho!
So, what most ppl refer to as head voice is mixed voice sung in a lighter tone, though one can also sing with a darker and chestier tone in mixed voice, as this is all about technique and things like intensity and pitch etc, but the actual head voice starts around C6 and it cannot be used to sing with lyrics and can only be used to do vocalizations like coloratura staccatos that are above C6, so only singers that sing operas with coloraturas that are above C6 access the head voice!
Now, at the end of the video, it sounds to me like it’s still chest voice, but the singing is done in a very soft way, so it can easily be confused with mixed voice (sometimes even I am not entirely sure if a singer has gone / not gone into mixed voice at least once) but, it is most likely chest voice, knowing that singers with voices that are of a medium soprano vocal height or higher tend to prefer singing in chest voice, so they don’t usually really go into mixed, and usually use different techniques and intensities to get a softer sound while still using chest voice or they sing at the edge, and sometimes even singers with mezzo soprano voice tend to sing almost entirely in chest voice, such as the singer from Evanescence, as many singers have a preference for chest voice because it sounds more professional, so the songs that are sung in entirely or almost entirely in chest voice tend to get a lot more views than songs that are sung mostly in mixed voice or only in mixed voice, for example!
Re the language, I am glad that it was mentioned in the video how gorgeous the language is, because Norse is one of the prettiest and most refined and most poetic and most modern and coolest languages ever created, and one of the greatest works of art of all time as its creator had a lot of natural artistic talent, so I highly recommend learning Norse and Gothic and Icelandic which are the most alpha languages ever, 2gether with the other prettiest languages ever Faroese and Dutch and English and Danish and Welsh and Breton and Cornish, which are also way too pretty not to know, and also Óld English and Forn Svenska and Middle English and maybe even Proto Germanic, as all these Germanic languages are just so gorgeous, and there are multiple songs with lyrics in most of these gorgeous languages, which is a great way to start learning new words, by memorizing and analyzing the lyrics and trying to understand and translate each word individually - these languages are so amazing, and I am learning them all at the moment, and I am already close to advanced level in Norse (upper intermediate level) and advanced level in Icelandic and Norwegian and upper advanced level in Dutch, so I can understand almost every word from almost every Skáld song, and this really feels amazing, to be able to really understand how the new language works and to know the words by heart, so language learning might just be the best hobby ever, or at least one of the best hobbies ever, as fun as singing and writing lyrics or poems!
By the way, the Thracian-Aslavic language that was incorrectly classified as Latin is not a Latin language (it doesn’t have the typical Latin verb endings and the typical noun endings etc and the typical Latin-based aspect and the typical letter combinations and the typical sounds and intonations used in Latin languages, so it’s not a Latin language) tho it was incorrectly classified as one, as multiple other less known languages, but hopefully all languages get correctly classified in the near future, so that each language classification reflects exactly what that language was made into, and not which previous language most or many of the words were modified from, as that’s not how language construction works, besides, most European languages have mostly words modified from Latin words, anyway, as Latin is the language that influenced most European languages the most at that time when the newer languages were created, so it doesn’t really mean anything that an European language has a lot of words that were modified from Latin words - for example, English has more words modified from Latin-based words than any other language, as English also has more words than any other language, with over one and a half million words, plus almost nine million extra words that are the scientific plant and animal etc names that are Latin-based, and it literally has a lot more Latin-based words than Germanic-based words, but it’s a 100% Germanic language which looks and sounds Germanic, as all words were adapted to Germanic pronunciation and Germanic spelling rules, so they are no longer Latin words, plus Proto Germanic was made by directly modifying Latin words and creating lots of new words, so Latin and Germanic languages are very closely related and many of the words are natural cognates tho most of the cognates are used with different meanings in Germanic languages, and English was classified correctly because it is the most known language and it was analyzed in detail by many linguists, but sometimes when the languages are unknown, they can get misclassified as they haven’t been analyzed in detail and compared to the languages spoken in the surrounding areas, so many times, they just classified unknown languages based on where most or many of the words were taken from, which is not a correct way to classify languages, because it’s the word endings and the letter combinations and the type of sound combinations and sounds and intonations etc and the overall aspect and the vibes that it gives off that make a language what it really is!
This is one of my favorite Nordic Folk bands. Rún is on my playlist i listen to almost everday

He sings with so much feeling (Blues). His voice has gotten better with age. The band has so many awesome songs. One of the videos is Simple Man (Hard Rock Live 2008). This is one of my favourite songs and also music videos. Absolutely gorgeous. They have another one (Troll Kalla Mik) from the same director and it's equally stunning. Her pronounciation of Old Norse/Icelandic is also lovely, perhaps not 100% accurate but I suppose her Frenchness gives it an extra-pleasing lilt.
There's something about this style that pulls at the primitive side of the brain in a most satisfying way... Skald is great.

If you've seen the Vikings spin off series "The Last Kingdom" you'll recognize the vocals immediately. Eivor is featured extensively in the soundtrack.
Not to be that guy, but The Last Kingdom is *not* a spinoff of Vikings. It's based on an entirely unrelated book series.
Her voice is smooth, mesmerizing. She's casting a spell.
Sadly, she left the band in 2022 due to health issues.

In the same style, I would recommend listening to Wardruna. They've been featured in the TV series Vikings. There's something mesmerizing about these songs regardless of which language they use.

Sounds like old Bréton. Ancient Northern France people from Brétagne, who, together with a leftover of fled (from the Romans) Ancient Belgians crossed the channel and into Southern England and called it "the greater Brittony" because the terrain was similar to where they came from, only larger.

Yes, this song is captivating, and to me haunting. It reminds me of something I've heard in the past, but I'm at a lost as to what it was. Beautiful vocals. My personal "taste test" (and I emphasize personal) is, would I go back for a second listen, and this one I would. Another example of a song/performance that I probably would never have been exposed to except for The Vocalyst! ☺

What you mean „growl and humming together” is throat singing. Pierrick Valence has a crystal-clear timbre and does it really well (NB: Throat singing is found in many places around the world, but we only have one POTENTIAL attestation/description of it among the Norsemen as far as I know).

Eivor uses some vocal techniques that are pretty unique. I'm fascinated with her inhaling vocals. Somewhat unusual!

the song is about wakening the Rune's of the Earth, and the tribes to help awaken and heal the earth. it is a call of the warrior soul, in all who can hear it, to gather for Ragnarök to fix the world and defeat Evil. it is a poem that is as old as time in the Viking pantheon.
Fehu, Uruz, Ansaz etc. are "names" for nordic runes, likely said every runes have own meaning, runes than represented R also can be read as "raido" (english translation as "ride"), same for other words from refrain
All right my lady friend... I must say that this piece sounds like medieval times. Mid-range tone from the female vocalist, and very deep and rich undertones and textures from the backing males. I like it 😁👍🏻

Since you're a vocal coach I'm a little surprised you haven't checked out Jacob Collier. Freakish microtonal precision control and range. His lower-middle voice is a bit unusually back in the throat sounding.
Moon River is just him but All Night Long is him with legendary Take 6 while playing several of the 20 instruments he plays. He leads random fans to improvise on Mahogany Sessions Little Blue but covers all kinds of genres. Lots of collaborations too like with saje that just won his 6th Grammy. Some of his Grammys were for arranging. Saje is newish but pretty solid, too.

When I first heard this a few years back I tried to find some information on the female singer all to no avail . She is very private .
