At least it shows me that i am not the only one who would like to make their own Character in the Star Wars Universe instead of always try to be one of the actual existing ones
Yeah, actually I have plans of making a version of myself for a Star Wars cosplay, right now I have plans of a jacket design. He’s a smuggler, by the way.
@@theswissmiss69 sorry seems i missed that one ^^ i have a Mandalorian Cosplay my Mandalorian works his way up to his armor, which explains the changes i make to it during the years.
Great video as always guys, keep it up. Also I wanted to ask if maybe sometime in the near future you guys could do a video covering techniques for building a "big" costume, think Warhammer 40k Space Marine Armor or Reinhardt from Overwatch, Im a big guy, 6'6, and I can pull off something like that but I want it to look and function good.
Modifying second hand clothes is something I do a lot for my cosplays and something that I find helps a lot is taking a really watery paint and I just use my hands or a clothe to rub it into leather or vinyl to take away the shiny and make them look a bit more realistic
GUYS! I don't say this often, but GENIUS! This is such a simple idea. I used to do the same thing for funny costumes, but NEVER thought about making SW costumes out of second hand clothing. Love it!
A lot of the thrift stores near my area have worked out how many people use them for cosplay. During halloween they had people who specifically helped people pick out items for costumes. Like you walked in and said 'I wanna be a pirate for halloween' and they would help you find pirate appropriate clothing. It was really cool.
I can't afford costume prices so I always go the thrift store route. I've be pme convinced that after the general look is in place it's the small details, like bu'uns, that can really sell the look.
Yes, I am working on an original character from the Star Wars Universe. Though I sewn a pair of trousers and jacket, but I am a seamstress by trade. Some interesting ideas as I need to make a belt/holster as well
Those simple modifications add so much, very inspiring things to try. I'm always jealous of your thrift store when you show it, the toy sections around here are barren! I really like the foam and prop work you two show off, but this was a great topic to show!
As someone who enjoys sifting through thrift shops, this is a great video! Thanks for the tips! I'm all about re-purposing first rather then straight up buying new things.
Hey...thanks for the tips...I for one agree with you about second hand stores and army bags. I have been Collecting nerf guns, army issue bag, and any other SiFi looking idems and modify them with painting and grinding chunks out of them. I have come up with my own paint and non-paint mixtures by using nail polish or other makeup supplies.
I've bad eyes so I almost misread : "Have you guys ever made costumes out of them" oO It was a good laugh after reading your real answer. (not the one I read at first)
Great video! I found a lot of great stuff at thrift stores when I needed clothes to play an extra in a Star Wars fan film last year. I even picked up an old plastic gun and modified and painted it. Lots of great tips for how to modify clothes, thanks for posting!
I can't go to a thrift store or flea market without constantly scanning for useful cosplay items - clothing, toys, fabrics - it's a mindset now! Great video! Building cosplays from scratch is fun, but thrifted cosplays are fun too! There's creativity and crafting in both!
Totally! I think many of us "suffer" from this hoarding behavior. I've definitely been thankful for my strange collection of found items many many times.
The thermoplastic that's generally used for custom holsters is called Kydex. It's probably a bit tougher than Worbla, but I'm not sure since I haven't done a comparison.
Great job Love the belt really good the holster from a bag I did something similar a few years ago I made a sam brown holster from a leather handbag for Indiana jones keep up the fantastic work you guys
such good sewing helpers x3 I've got a couple of those, they help keep the fabric from sliding... or do the complete opposite depending on their mood xD
as I watched you make the purse holster I was like ahhhhh.... ummmm... but as always it can be hard to see the artists vision as they go. Very impressive end result :) Can't wait to see the rest!
Used some of these techniques for my merchant costume build on my channel. Just need to get the mask. vest used upholstry fabric, pants were shower curtains. modified boots and a belt he can neither confirm nor deny once belonged to a jedi.
The video's you've been doing for this costume have been great. I've been gradually working on my own Star Wars character and these videos have been helping me come up with ideas.
Awesome video with lots of different tricks and tips and techniques.Using that Worbla for the holster was pretty cool, the stuff they use for regular guns is called Kydex, but would be way overkill for a prop. I'd like to try working with both of them someday. Thanks for all the great videos you guys make!
i think there is something missing in this costume, you need to add some armor parts to the hand with the bracer cuz alone it looks a bit bulky and out of place, maybe some shoulder pads or an elbow guard or both (sorry if getting advices from ppl who knows almost nothing about prop making (me xD) annoys you because after all you are the professionals but i just have those ideas after watching your videos)
I am also a Master of Modification. This is how 'I' cosplay. I get things that I absolutely have no skill in making, everything else is usually all me. I too am working on a Smuggler cosplay, already modding a leather jacket to look more in universe.
I find it interesting that you use clips instead of pins for with pins you can sew much closer to the foot without taking the pin out. You can't do that with the clips. Sewing closer to the foot being a beginner sewer would be helpful to create straighter lines
That was really cool to watch. I'm just getting into modifying clothing and just cosplaying something other than a mascot style creature suit so it's really neat to see what all can be done. I've found some neat things so far though. I've gotten a few belts from the early 90s that I put on a hat for a nice kind of voodoo witchdoctor-y feel. One I've been thinking of making into a collar for a African inspired design. I've also gotten a few suit jackets I've modded into tailcoats and a pillbox hat that I'd like to make a hat block out of since that was the main thing that appealed to me about it. I joked to my grandma that I had gotten her a new easter hat when I brought it home.
Thank you Brittany! Been hoping for a video like this for some time! I'm having difficulties selecting clothes for my custom/personalized star wars inspiered costume, this helps alot! Love the sowing helper, where can I get one?
I manage to find a nice leather jacket at my local thrift store that looks just like the one that the late great John Hurt worn when he played to The War Doctor on Doctor Who
My best thrift store purchase was a pair of hand made Italian leather riding boots...only £10. Hardly any wear to them at all. Done some research online and they retail for about £350 a pair...happy days.
Every other city and county I've been to has much larger thrift shops and I'm sitting here in my relatively big town with nothing but a small store with like three shoes ;-;
Punished Props I feel your channel is going to soon start costing me lots of money! Since finding you on Thursday last week I've watched every second of every video on the channel and still crave more! Watching reruns now as I paint my helmet made from your plans on the site! What have you done! ;)
for the Star Wars day in my city I combine accesories of my other cosplays for a Luke Skywalker inspired look xd my Link boots, belts and pants and my white Hebi Sasuke yukata xD
Since tall boots are common in Star Wars among men, I was wondering if you might have any tips on finding tall boots for men on the cheap as that's a super rare find
That's a tricky one. Women's clothing has the biggest sections in the stores around us. Amazon does sell some "Han Solo Style" boots in men's sizes, though.
Found a good source for tall boots for men! Army/Navy Surplus stores. I found a pair that fit me well that cost me all of $40. Just sharing the knowledge just in case someone decides to trawl the comments section or if you need it yourself one day.
it looks nice but personally i think it's basically a gender bent Han solo with an overly large gauntlet, I would cut down on the size so it's not as bulky but I know that's what she was going for, I'd love to see more armored parts for this like a previous commenter said related to mandolorian armor, maybe you're a rouge death watch member that was exiled and took up bounty hunting? or even a long lost relative of Fett's keeping up the family business?
The old cat overseers who don't care what you're working on, just so long as you pat or play with them. "To hell wif ur wurkx, I r kitteh an needz patz!"
At least it shows me that i am not the only one who would like to make their own Character in the Star Wars Universe instead of always try to be one of the actual existing ones
Maahr Krell oh interesting.
What would your character be like?
I think I personally would just make myself a Han Solo costume!☺️
Yeah, actually I have plans of making a version of myself for a Star Wars cosplay, right now I have plans of a jacket design. He’s a smuggler, by the way.
I may be late but soon I'm going to Galaxy edge and I want to look like my own tipe of character
@@anbu_gamer Careful with that, Disney doesnt like that. I have heard from some ppl that u cant dress up at Disney Parks.
@@theswissmiss69 sorry seems i missed that one ^^ i have a Mandalorian Cosplay my Mandalorian works his way up to his armor, which explains the changes i make to it during the years.
This vid has it all...thrift shop tips, creative repurposing, and cats!
Don't forget star wars
That cat of yours cracks me up.
Those cats are the best!! highlight of every video they are in lol
Without the bracer it looks like it could easily fit into the Firefly universe as well!
Shane Ramos had the exact same thought.
Good call!
she could add some ammo straps containing "energy cells" for the blaster and maybe make some thermal detonator belts

That's awesome. We'll have to test out clothing weathering in a future video.
Yea I second that. It's super easy. A little shoe polish watetered down gives leather a really cool look
Killer tutorial. There's an awesome freedom to playing in an established universe without trying to copy an existing character's costume.
Thanks Andrew!
All the colors on this look great together. This costume would also look at home in the classic Battlestar Galactica universe!
nothing like "authentic wookie fur" to complete a star wars outfit.
We should have named our fluffy cat Chewie, since she loves chewing plastic.
GUYS! I don't say this often, but GENIUS! This is such a simple idea. I used to do the same thing for funny costumes, but NEVER thought about making SW costumes out of second hand clothing. Love it!
Right on! Thanks so much for watching!

Sewing helpers (cats) are amazing at making things looked weathered or creating freyed (sorry for my spelling) edges on almost all soft materials

We do have a bunch of great thrift stores in the Seattle area.

I LOVE THIS!!! And your costume turned out AMAZING!!! Also my cats are also obsessed with everything Im doing when I'm sewing.
Thanks! Your cats are way better than our cats :D
The thermal plastic used in tactical holsters is Kydex just incase you didn't know tho I'm sure you do both of you are superb makers
That holster construction is inspired!
I think I'm off to buy my first purse... >_>

feels like a mix between general organa and old han solo costumes! so cool!
Your cats are adorable. Have you guys ever made costumes for them?
We've tried, but they have no interest in wearing anything.
I've bad eyes so I almost misread : "Have you guys ever made costumes out of them" oO It was a good laugh after reading your real answer. (not the one I read at first)

might try this as im lacking a cosplay idcea Manchester Comic con. this could easily apply to firefly clothing as well

Great tips! Never thought of using the purse in such a way. Thanks for the video!

There are pros and cons to clips vs pins for sure. Clips are nice because you can work so quickly without fear of jabbing yourself.
Well shoot, now instead of doing a plain vault suit I think I'll try this for my FallOut outfit and see what comes out. Awesome video as always

i agree with the zipper statement, however buttons i feel seem authentic
Yeah it just depends on the source material. Star Wars is famous for not having visible closures, with a few exceptions.
i love your cats omg. so fluffy

did u ever think of doing a sowing how to or tips video?
We don't have a ton of experience with sewing, so we're pretty light on those types of videos.

a single shoulder armor would look cool

Thumbs up for the cats!

Sounds like a lot of good ideas for your own custom Star Wars character! I hope you consider giving it a try. =D
Looks great. I have a lovely cat weathered sofa :P.
Truly authentic!
Great job!
Very nice project :)
Also did like the cat helpers very 😹
The old cat overseers who don't care what you're working on, just so long as you pat or play with them.
