- On Friday 9 October 2020 I went to the grocery store. I saw my cat outside, still doing his thing. I knew he was already an old cat with 15.5 years old, but he was still very vital.
When I came back normally he always greeted me, always stood in my way when unloaded groceries but this time the cat was not there. At that point I was not worried yet. But hours went by, and it was raining, windy and cold, and even till 4:00 am in the night, "Knuffel" (Dutch word for "hugger") was still not back. I went to bed with a very uneasy thought. Next day at 10:00am, again looking, this time also asking neighbors and searching in bushes and every kind of place where he might could be, but still no Knuffel. Then, we I thought I probably never see him again, because I was convinced something had happened to him, he was suddenly there at the backdoor, completely trenched, dirty, cold and probably deep in pain. I let him in, cleaned and dried him off, and put him next to the warm heater.
The next day my mother mother and her friend came by and while we sat on the couch I noticed this big bulge in his stomach. We all thought that it was no good. He could barely walk, he hadn't eaten every since and his breathing was heavy. So it was decided the next day, on Monday 12 October to take him to a vet. An X-ray photo was made and from this photo it was clear that most of his organs in the back of his body had been shattered or ruptured. How this happened will always remain a mystery. According to the vet the cat could not be saved anymore and he would probably die within a few days because he was also dehydrated and skinny. So it was decided to save him the pain to euthanize him. We rather took the pain of missing him than causing him pain by letting him live like that.
I looked for a box, and I knew I wanted to bury him in my own garden, and make a simple makeshift grave. Digging in the clay ground was tough and the job took me hours. I covered everything up with roof tiles so no predators could get to him, not that here are predators and my terrain is locked off as well. I decided also to document this ritual and make a nice video of it, as a remembrance to this kind animal, one that never was moody and could really eat anything.
Well, Knuffel, you are in cat's heaven now. The grave will be made a little nicer with some fake flowers, solar powered leds, and a name tag with his date of death, 12 October 2020. Knuffel became 15.5 years old and he had a good life.
The saddest part is when u buried them, you'll remember when they were alive and the warm love they gave. It's so hard to see their photos and videos when they were alive and healthy. RIP to all lost pets all over the world. 🥺❤🩹

I would suggest to make it deeper and that the box is either 'sturdy', or does not contain any pockets of air. It kinda happened here, where there was a little pocket of air left, so some weeks after I made this grave I noticed the rooftiles had sunken a bit. Naturally the cardboard box will dissolve when being wet and underground, and the process of decomposing is normal; for any animal you bury in your own garden. In my case I should have put more stuff in the box, or used another more sturdier box, to prevent the upper part from sinking. But, it's solid now, 3,5 years later. I think I will make a video "4 years after" somewhere in October, 20 October maybe, sort of a little commemorating video.

My cat died yesterday..... Still can't believe she's gone.... She always used to meow around the house always hungry whenever she saw me after i come home she used to come to me and rub her body against me.... She was a very good and a brave cat. I still remember when i found her she was a little kitten whose siblings were eaten by dogs she was the only one left... She was very playful she used to play with me every now and then.... Everyone in my family used to love her so much ..... One day she randomly gone missing we searched for her for few days.... After some days my mom randomly called out her name "tuntun" .... As soon as she did so the cat came running into the house and was very happy seeing us..... The sad part is she had gave birth to 3 lil kittens rencently on 1 feb.... She only spent one and a half month with her lil kids and now she's gone💔.... Everytime i look at her babies they make me remember tuntun she used to play the same way like how her babies play now.... I feel sad whenever i remember my cute lil cat💔.... Now she's in a better place and i looks after her 3 baby kittens... I used to call her "billu"

Saying good buy to a loving pet has always been so hard. It gets harder and harder the older I get. You can tell how much he loved this cat. He is such a beautiful cat. Sorry for your lose.

It always reminds me also about how even worse it is too loose your parents or even your children, the ones you love. It's now mid July 2021, and my cat now passed away 3/4 year now. Even when I watch it back I get this sad feeling, and it always makes wonder as well, when at normal funerals always 'sad' music is being played, even evoking MORE sadness and tears to the ones left behind. It is is like as we WANT to throw out these emotions......very weird....

Sometimes I wonder why we people have this custom of making our emotions even swell more? Like at funerals and cremations, when a speech is hold about the deceased person, then usually the famous song of that person is played. People then stand up, and most of the time that music is always so emotional that so many people cannot hold their tear. I know my mother has still that 'speech' of her deceased husband (not my father) on a cd, but she never listens to it, still she keeps it. Is this a need for us, create something to 'remember', create to activate emotions, to 'show' to those we loved whereever they are that we still think about them and we miss them? Maybe, because if we don't, I have to think about a quote from Malcom mcdowell from the movie Star Trek Generations in which he says "They say time is the fire in which we burn." and indeed time will consume if we don't remember, time will make people eventually forget and be forgotten.

I have two cats and I can't hold tears when watching this. One day they'll leave me, and I'll collect all their photos and videos, make a shared album, then put an indestructible QR code to the link on their coffin. It's a way for me to remember the joy/companion they brought to me
I just realized it was already 5 days ago that this took place a year ago. I am baffled with the amount of time that have been passed by, but I also wish to think you all for sharing your own sadness, and at least that is a common thing we can share. In this regard we are not alone. Everybody will eventually miss something of someone in his/her life.

He came back as soon as he could because he knew where home was and that you loved him. How lovely that he has a special spot in your garden, just like he does in your heart. Showing clips of Knuffel while he was still alive was heart-wrenching. I'm crying for you both. Sure leaves a big hurting hole in the heart when they have to go.

Very heartfelt documentation, thank you. I am doing this today for my male (yesterday we euthanized, brain cancer, 16yrs) my little girl I raised from a bottle, she passed a few weeks ago, kidney failure, 19 1/2 years. They were together in life and will rest together. It never gets easier to say goodbye and we think of our pet family members often, don't we. You did nice.
It's so common that people do not realize what they have in life and once it's gone, it is gone forever. And forever means forever. They usually realize that when somebody or your beloved pet dies. Our minds cannot comprehend the conception of 'death'. It's asking like, where is the edge of the Universe? Cannot be answered.

I think a lot of people come here shortly after their cat passes away, probably by searching "cat funeral" or something. It's nice to see a place where others experiencing loss can go to see that they're not alone.
I have two cats now. One is 18 and the other is 7. Both are healthy and happy. However, I know pet loss as the 18 year old's sister from the same litter died 7 years ago, and my childhood cat died at the age of 19 about 18 years ago. Both are still very missed, and always will be.
Mine also died at 19 years. Yesterday :/ I am only 20 years old, she was at my side for the whole life I can remember...

I still don’t know how you were so calm doing the burial because when I did it to my cat I broke down in tears and my father had to finish digging the grave because I could not bear the pain of losing my cat that I had for 5 years 😔

As a cat owner, I'm crying. I dont want the day to come when I have to bury my girl cat. I'm gonna be heart broken
Sometimes I even wonder if I was not better of just letting cremate the animal, because actually now I have made that grave over there, and even though it's completely out of sight, I know it's there, and it's practically half a year ago now but every time I go to that back part of the garden I get reminded.
Would you believe there are countries where it's illegal to bury your own animal in your own back yard unless an administrative official agrees so people bury animals illegally? If you leave it at the vet, you cannot get the ashes, because... no sensible reason. They probably just dump the ashes in a dumpster. Not a dignified end for a creature that you supposedly love. You know, when my grandmother was young and somebody died it was up to the family members to wash him and dress him. For a day or two neighbours would come to pay respects. Only then was he buried. Now we want to outsource death even when it comes to animals, because death is unpleasant. Strangers take care of our loved ones for us. Anyhow, my animal is in the garden which she loved in a wooden box made by a sympathetic neighbour. Frankly I envy her because I would rather be buried there, near the forest, than in a communal graveyard full of teens laughing and talking on their smartphones. Alas, no choice.
@@Snowwie88 I buried my beloved cat today. She was suffering from liver problems for 2 years and she lost the battle today. It was the hardest thing I did to bury her.

Will be burying my beautiful community cat today. I never had a chance to find him a home, and I'll never forgive myself for it, but I like to think that for the two years we fed him, we were his home. We will be burying him in our backyard, where he spent most of his days lounging, watching us through the windows. My gorgeous boy. He was mine. He was ours. Thank you for sharing. I'll be making a similar little box for him.
I am sorry for your loss, but keep in mind that a cat regards every place as home, as long as he gets his food. A cat really does not care where he is, if he get's food and a good place to sleep and hunt around during day or night he will stay with you. So, your cat probably had a good life as well. Pls I urge you not to make the same mistake I did, I left too much air in the box. Fill it up properly so the soil will not sink. Good luck (miss?) take care.

Thank you, I even myself did not realize the impact the video would have had on myself. When you are doing this then you don't think too much about the filming (except the stupid S9 has a 5 min record limit on 4K 60fps), so in essence I was constantly busy with the camera. But maybe by being busy with the camera I kind of forget what I was doing, and that was burying my friend. And don't ask me why did I put in video fragments when he was still alive, you could argue the same reason why people put on sad music during funeral services. It's like we do WANT our emotions to be provoked.

@@ayseclark-carter8744 Thank you, I really did, and watching this video today, now 3 months and 11 days ago, I always think about the passage of time. And as of now, both my parents (both 66) are still living. And one day I will be saying, "where did that time went, and I have to miss you now also forever dear mom or dad", but that is something I would not know how to process when that day will come, how will I deal with those emotions? I have seen cousins and nephews of mine seeing their parents dying and the thought of how they must have felled is so chilling, it makes me really afraid to be honest. Also because I don't have any brothers or sisters to fall back on, nobody, and I am a single man, and no children either. It's a scary thought.

To be honest, sometimes I don't know why I made this video, maybe as a remembrance and also to remind myself exactly how, when and where I buried my dear Knuffel. For some reason the video turned out to be pretty emotional actually and I avoid it a little bit, it has more impact on me than I thought. In the beginning I though that it would a nice 'memorial' thing to have on RUclips, and hopefully RUclips will stay forever, and this video with it, but now when I see the compiled version with the music and all the steps I took to do the burial (the actual work was 3 hours, all compressed into a short video) it makes me feel sad.

I guess not, because every time you are accustomed to a new pet, it eventually dies. Typically cats and dogs range from becoming 8 to 22 years old. A parrot can get a lot older, but parrots are not really those 'personal' kind of pets that dogs and cats are.
A fine boy! I loved how you showed the corner shots of Kniffel and the love you lavished on his burial. It's how strong the bond can be with a beloved pet. Thank you - this was a very moving video.

At least you got to hold her and pet her one last time 💕. My dad knocked on my door today to tell me the news and had me go outside to confirm it was her. Flies and maggots had already gotten to her, but my dad held me back from reaching out towards her. I’ve known her all of my life and can’t imagine life without her. I chose a nice place to bury her, right by the birdbath. That way she could still be chasing after birds in kitty heaven. I’m my twenty years of life I have never experienced a death take this much of a toll on me. Nothing has come close to this. That cat was immortal in my eyes, although I know that death happens to everything I just couldn’t see it ever happening to my cat, my best friend, my ride or die. I’m happy you got to spend time with your cat before burial, wish I had the chance.

Thank you for posting this video. My cat passed away due to heart failure and watching these videos has assured me there’s nothing wrong with crying and grieving for a while over your beloved cats.
I felt the same. When I get home after the funeral end and saw my cat lying lifeless outside my home. Couldn't believe at first, but I eventually accepted the fact that my cat just passed. Now I have my one other which I'm going to take care. My cat GEE.

My cat died about 2 hours ago... my cat was calling me while I was sleeping.. when I woke up and the cat was having a hard time breathing... I felt that it was different than any other time. Finally, the cat breath a final deep breath and died.... I watched my cat die.. he was only 4 years old.. I couldn't figure out what caused him to death.. I can't stop crying right now.. he always sleeps with me on my bed waking me up in the morning... always near me and follows me around where ever I go...and now... I can't see him anymore.. I am sorry to post this on here.. seeing your video.. I thought you would understand how I feel right now..

@@johnkim6276 I think it is even worse when you are actually present when it happens and maybe even more worse if you don't know what is going on. While a cat is still alive you never really give it a second thought that the animal eventually will die and especially if you have a close bond to it it will hurt even more when it slips out of your life. I am sorry for your loss, and I definitely realize how you must feel. And it's okay to throw out the emotions, that's natural.

That is true, and recently the date went by that it happened 2 years ago. I was planning on making a sort of memorial video with the grave still being there, but this can also be done after 3 years. Every time I see a reaction to this video, it makes me think again about life itself, knowing that at this moment, this year 2022, for example, I know my parents are still there. They are both 68, but time is flying so fast that one of these days I will look back at this comment knowing that they will not be there anymore. In short what I want to say: Enjoy every moment of happiness you have in life, enjoy your spouse, your parents (while you still have them), your children (while they are still young and not have left the elderly house) and most of all your health. "Cease the day" is a perfect statement in this one.

I don't have a family, my cat was my family. I also don't have siblings, no children, only my parents and a few friends and cousins, but the house is pretty empty without him. Still I have been doubting whether I want another cat again. I know the responsibility it gives. Now, a few months later I can live with this situation and having no animal to take care off is like a weight of my shoulder.

I lost my Ellie yesterday too, she was in pain ,put her to sleep, vet was very nice and let her die in my arms,She was 19 or maybe 20 years old, we took her from the streets being old already,she had a wonderful life full of love..

Im sorry for your loss. It's a pain that we can never get used to when losing a pet 😭 I just buried my cat who died from FeLV that had developed Stage-4 CKD. The loss eventually does fade in time. The pain of losing your beloved pet you feel the most the first weeks or month, but eventually you move on. We always know that once we start with pets, mostly dogs or cats, that their average life span is not that long of that of an average human. We know our pets usually die before us, but it always comes when you don't expect it. But it's more sad to see if your pet only becomes a few years old and dies of other causes, like in your situation, which is really sad to read. We (when I was still living with my parents) had a cat, a big black and white lovely cat, super friendly, but one day he came home, was sick of something and died at 8 years old. Just like that. To all I have not responded personally to, think about all our cats are together celebrating in cat's heaven. Still, somehow, this video still strikes me when I watch it now and then.
I have a cat myself, and seeing this makes me scared knowing that I will have to do this to my cat once he passes on.
You don't have to do this if you believe it will be too hard for your emotions. You always have the choice of letting your passed away pet to be cremated and put it's ashes into a little urn that you can keep somewhere. My father did the same with his cat, and it sit in a little urn inside a glass boxed cupboard with a date engraved into it. So that choice is fully yours. The only thing I regret about this is that I did not fill up the cardboard box a little bit better, because a month after burial I noticed that the tiles that were on top of the grave had sunken. It made sense because the cardboard box was getting wet and collapsing. I even wished that I used a hard plastic (Tupperware) type of container which would never collapse and always keep my little friend dry. On the other hand, using a hard container also would have meant a slower pace of decomposing.

Thank you for sharing this. In tears as i write this. My baby is around 15 years old & she has a cancer tumor. Tomorrow is my last day before finding out if she can have surgery im so nervous i hope she makes it but I'm braceing myself for the worst. I know one day all our pets have to go & its so tough thank you for sharing bcuz although it doesnt make it hurt less i have a slight comfort knowing im not alone. RIP to your little one. Yesterday, 11/27/22 I buried my rabbit Butters, my soul mate & companio, in my garden, where he loved to play. He was 8 years old. I also took memorial photos of him, and I am so happy I did. 😊

Thank you (no need to call me sir) :-), the amount of reactions to this video is quite overwhelming to me, even though it's now already more than 2 years and 3 months ago it feels still like yesterday. It's indeed remarkable what a relative short video (of 9 minutes), that took a total of 3 hours of doing the entire procedure can do to people who also lost their beloved pets and come across this video. They recognize so much of their own situation in this, the same 'sad' feeling, but also a good feeling because you feel yourself as being a good person that has a love for animals.

Omg this is touching😢We just our cat a few hours ago and my hubby is out back digging a hole at this very moment. What got me just now watching this is it’s crazy that we are burying her with the same exact white and grey blanket as you did. Rip to your beloved cat. This is harder than I expected.

Hey I want to Thank You for providing me with guidance on a respectful way to bury my Kitty this morning, She was a rescue cat and I took her in (didn't want to take her but my girl friend at the time played on my heart strings to take her in as she had been abandoned and was living in a hole in the wall of the apartment complex). Once I took her in, she became attached to me and I to her. The girlfriend was told to leave but I would not let her take the cat as I knew the path that the girlfriend was about to take was one of regret and torment. Kitty was what we named her. Since then she lived like a queen with me for the last 17 years and the other day out of the blue just stopped eating and three days later this morning, under my care she gave up the ghost back to the Lord who created her. Your video was the first video I got when I put in a search for burying a cat. I really appreciate that you honored your cats life and with great respect for life you put her to rest. I did the same. I'm going to make a plaque for her to put on the tree I buried her under.

I am sorry for your loss also, this whole video contains replies of people who lost their beloved pet so we all share the same sadness. But we can feel united in the sense that we know, all of us, that our pets, had a GOOD life, and that we can be proud on the fact that we loved our animals so much.

@Snowwie , I just buried my cat Loki in my backyard, where he would watch me in the kitchen ... I couldn't bear to put in the hands of a cemetery, with strangers , when he died in my arms ...Loki looked like Knuffel but with more hair ...He"s on my Facebook " Annastesia Paisley " Playing with his Catnip ....Thank You So much ..Many made me feel bad, that it is illegal ...

And that means being there, to the end, for our animal children. I believe that we'll be with our pets in Heaven, but until then, we sure do miss them!
I do not follow any particular faith, but I am not an atheist either, I do believe in something and I just **hope** something is there that makes us see all lost people and all lost beloved animals see again.
I just lost my second feline son to cancer and know your pain. I held them in my arms as the doses were given and eye to eye contact till they lost consciousness. I took both when their time came to be cremated, and when my time comes to have our-and future pets ashes spread together.
It's obvious with how gently you moved your little one how deeply you love him.
I too put my boys in a box with a soft blanket and I placed them in the chamber since they were so shy of anyone else. But know that someday we will be with our furry children again, the seperation is only temporary.
aww thank yo for your compassion and love for fur babies. i lost many too but bury them in backyard i put memorials they are never forgotten always in our hearts God created animals to love and protect to be there with them when they pass. last time my blue eyes passed away around 2: 20 in am. he was fighting whatever he had he had worms too but he was a stray cat who happen to show up in my door one day his face turning toward our neighbors his behind by my door it took a while for him to hear me open door i started to feed him outside for awhile before he came in my house i have other cats they all got along with him i remember he eat fast then pee on the cats dishes lol but i cleaned it up. GOd gave me blue eyes for 3 weeks and i know God has our pets with Him. God talks alot about animals in psalm and proverbs. I had asked God before blue eyes showed ujp send me a stray cat or dog my way and 3 days later blue eyes shows up. I miss him terrible my heart is aching right now but i pour anointing oil his body thank you for sharing video.
I had a cat and it died in accident yesterday... At this moment idk what to say but i burried it for giving her respect.. God should gave longer lifespan for this poor creatures

You were merciful to have it euthanized to end the poor thing’s pain rather than prolonging it out of selfish , but understandable grief.

oh how nice, I just lost my cat today , Chelsea, I called her mama cat. had her 12 years . This really helped me, thank you. I wrapped my cat in her blanket as she passed and held her tight as could be , I to will make her a nice gift box to honor her in my back yard . Theresa. I will miss her.
For some reason it feels 'okay' to know that your little friend will always be with you, in your own garden, as long you stay living there and as long you will live yourself. I am not planning on moving away from this place, where I already live now for 10 years. Sadly enough the backyard area is not the most well maintained area, but I keep the surrounding around the grave as nice as possible. I think also when it will be 13 October 2022, this year, then it will be Knuffel's 2 years ago of passing that I will make a little commemorate video, and do an extra clean up and beautification of his little grave, and also it's then visible how much has changed in 2 years (and how much not). My condoleances to your loss, and many other here who posted in this comment section of this video. I never could have realized how many cat owners found this specific video, who their beloved cat died and shared their feeling.

I used to feed five stray cats. Now, they are four. I dunno what happened to one of them, but I feel this nagging thought he crossed the rainbow bridge. I can only imagine the pain you went through , and yet through it all, somehow found the strength to bury your cat and all.

Thank you for your video. I do hope you've found another critter to fill the void. 🐱🐈 Lodging an animal is always tough. Especially after having one for half your life. Mine wandered up in my yard 20 years ago and never left. She hated being in the house? So she was always an outside cat, but she didn't act like an outside cat. She never wandered away. I dunno that actually left our yard more than a handful of times, but she wouldn't stay in the house. When it was cold in the winter and we'd bring her in, she'd throw a fit until we let her out and then she'd lay by the door. Finicky kitty for sure.

Your description of your cat is exactly how mine was as well. Always wanted to be outside, but never too far away from the house. I could call him and he usually was around. Especially when it was feeding time. But staying inside the house was never his thing. I did kept him in the house though if the weather was miserable, stormy, cold etc.
