I think most people who want to push an IMDB equivalent to game rating is most commonly not a gamer, the ones that think no game should recieve 10/10 or that average is 5/10. It has never been like that in general in the games markets. A 5/10 is garbage for most people, 6/10 is playable but often quite lackluster. A 7/10 is average. 8/10 is good. 8.5/10 is quite good. 9/10 is very good. 9,5/10 is fantastic and 10/10 is perfect. Some scores do not translate well to other times, a 10/10 game from 2007 would not be 10/10 now which is why it must be seen from the eyes of when it was made. Some games are timeless, such as SMB3.

The more 'popular' video games have gotten, the broader the audience the devs need to cater to, which in turn makes the actual 'gamers' suffer. We begin to get shit for $80 CDN MSRP, don't even mention the gimmicky maximumsupremebigdick collectors editions. The industry was infiltrated by a bunch of business moguls who care more about their front lawn than video games. Cheers to you and your channel Mack, been a viewer for a very very long time.

i'm pretty split on this video
i'll agree that games journalism nowadays is fucked and the out-of-ten score system is almost worthless because of the standard "average" game score being about 7, but I disagree with some of your comments regarding specific games. Primarily RDR2, which was very much NOT ahead of it's time. Perhaps in presentation alone, yes, but it's design philosophy is deeply tied to Rockstar's current trend of reducing freedom in missions, where if you so much as stray from the indicated path you fail. This is ironic considering your earlier criticism of shooters that box you into a designated area by flashing a "return to the combat zone" message. RDR2 doesn't even give you that, it gives you a line that you either follow or fail.
HL1, HL2 and Prey (in your opinion) DO stand out as exemplary games, yes, but they're all exemplary for primarily one reason: their dedication to immersion. This indicates to me that you value immersion beyond anything else in a game, which is fair and understandable. However, what I felt was being implied was that anything that fell short of HL's level of immersion was a bad game, or a wasted opportunity. To some players immersion isn't important, and to pretend that immersion is the main factor in deciding a good or bad game is a little presumptuous.

That depends on whether the game in question that you're playing values immersion or not. If it does, the gameplay should reflect it.
The last of us, for example, values immersion and it's reflected in the gameplay for the most part apart from stupid AI movements here and there. Skyrim takes immersion quite seriously and it's gameplay and RPG format reflects it very well.
It's not just dependent on the gamer. A lot of it also falls on the quality of the game itself. Another example would be - Detroit become human and rdr2 comparison. Detroit doesn't value immersion. It just wants you to experience its story. Thus, it's gameplay is narrative for the most part. Whereas rdr2 is relatively more immersive.

    • @0Bennyman
      @0Bennyman 5 лет назад +1

@Crepitus "Lack of Content" That's a hard thing to define, at what point do you say a game has enough content? When it has over 100 hours? 50? 20? 200? 500? Does it change based on the type of game? Is there a written rule that states this as fact?
"Balance" That too hard to define, some would say Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege is balanced yet others would disagree, who is correct?
"Poor Design" Again hard to define, some would say Bosses in Dark Souls are poorly designed while others would Disagree. Or the Level is too Open or too closed, who is correct?
Technical issues like falling through the floor is obvious and clear that it shouldn't happen, dropping below 30fps is an obvious issue. But everything relating to gameplay is very Subjective, I personally dislike Dynasty Warriors because the gameplay design of cutting down hundreds of enemies constantly just isn't fun (In my opinion), does that make it fact?
Majority of whether a game is good or bad is down to the users preference, not to facts.

0Bennyman Lack of content can be quantified somewhat, like a multiplayer FPS launching without a server browser, less than 10 maps, no single player or a short, shit one, lack of social features etc.

    • @0Bennyman
      @0Bennyman 5 лет назад

@Tsuko Para What if it's 6 good maps that offer a tonne of variety in how you play? What if it's half the price of a normal release? What if it's free? What if they are offering a new map every month? What if there's constant content being developed?
You also said "Multiplayer" FPS releasing with No single player? lol, I think if it has a Singleplayer then it's just an FPS. Also once again your opinion on the Story is as it is an "Opinion", I personally hate COD Ghosts story and would say it's the worst of the series yet some people love it.
I also would not see a Server browser as a nessesary piece of content, never needed one for CoD though I did like the addition in Battlefield 3 and 4 and 1 simply because they allowed custom options to how the game played, was it nessesary though? Not in my eyes at all.
My main point is that none of this is easily defined and is all down to how the user views it. Whereas the game dropping to 10fps constantly that is not an opinion, that is fact as long as you of course have proof. Technincal Issues are the only thing you can define solidly.
(We could also nitpick and say a £40 releasing with 2 hours of gameplay is not enough, *cough* Sonic Forces *cough* and while majority would say that's ridiculous there is still a fair few who would disagree therefore it's not fact)

It felt sooooo cut and dry and basic just "push buttons to see more of the game". Everything you do is so basic, and boring, and tedious. The story and graphics are both lovely, but the gameplay is a drag in every aspect. It's not fun and light to get through it easy, but it's not challenging or exciting or engaging. It's just tedious fussing to be allowed to see more of the story.

I didn't watch the whole video because its a rant. But I do agree I dont see a lot of 1-3 scores on games. I think thats because a lot of "1" games are like Steam shovelware and the big websites dont cover those. If you go on Gamespot right now, there are a ton of 5's and 6's (average) and a few 8's, and like one 9. So it might be on the higher side, but they are covering more "cooked" and finished games usually. (By the way on a scale of 1-10 "6" is average, because it puts you on the passing side, average is never below 50%). And if you are sick of the same game over and over - no way Sony lets this developer make a game like this again. Its not doing well already...
So I dont 100% understand this mentality - I think you are getting burned out. If your brain wont let you play games, maybe go do something else?
Sure Days Gone came out (which triggered him), and yes its one of Sony's big budget games, but its been pretty panned since it was shown years ago and most people agree its average or below average; (its not getting 9/10 anywhere) - Gamespot gave it a 5/10 in fact!!! It doesn't look totally bad, and most people compare it to Mad Max which also didn't get rave reviews when it came out and got a 6/10 on Gamestop and was a very average game, (and I had fun with it) -- so 5/10 is probably a perfect score for Days Gone!! So why you mad bro!?
But at the same time Sony also just put out Dreams in playable Beta ready to release soon - he could have signed up to play and review that instead. Or Heavens Vault looks like no game Ive seen before. There are plenty of games which arent always the same, just some trend towards more coverage, and he was aiming at that for his channel.
If you're mad that a grenade shows you the arc of its throw in a 3rd person game (how else are you going to do it!?), then maybe get into a different career? You might be burnt out? Having higher hopes is one thing, but i cant get through your rant. Games are better than they've ever been man.

From a world building and story aspect I agree with you but ain't you one to criticize a game for lacking in its most important feature being gameplay? Their gameplay design is decades old while their controls still feel like I'm playing GTA IV which weren't that great control wise.
Rockstar mission design has been getting linear and linear with each new open world title release. Gone are the days in GTA 3 you can do any mission you want your way. In RDR 2 and GTA V for example if you don't do it 100% the Rockstar way you fail the mission.

Your problem stems from the fact you’re treating RDR2 like a cowboy version of GTA. It’s not. It ridiculously more slow paced, and if you can’t come to terms with that then that’s your problem, not a fault of the game.

    • @RedX165

RDR 1 was one of my favorite games of last gen. It was a cowboy game but it didn't take realism to the extreme like this game does. Its controls for free aim weren't cripple like it was in RDR 2 to add a sense of "Weight" or other BS excuses you apologists use.
Take a open world game like MGS 5 and see how a real game is suppose to play control wise.
Rockstar always had a problem with its controls. They can make great worlds and stories but when it comes to gameplay. It always was lacking. Max Payne 3 and GTA V seem to be the exception and the right path moving forward. RDR 2 went the GTA IV route which was just unresponsive controls.

I loved Red Dead 1 but Red Dead 2 (which I bought an XBoneX specifically for) I found boring. I was shocked by that at first because I was such a big fan of the original, but then I realised that RD1 was a perfect recreation of the Spaghetti Westerns of which I am a huge fan. RD2 is like being a cowboy in Central Europe. Too much greenery, not enough dusty trail. Great gameplay in terms of the detail and sheer effort in world building and the hunting and fishing are great, but I feel that the environment is unconvincing and the story is tiresome. So tiresome that I'm struggling to get through it. I do appreciate the game on a technical level though. It's stunning. On the plus side, RD1 is not only backward compatible with XBoneX but is also enhanced with higher resolution textures, so I'm enjoying replaying that too. Also, UFC2 is pretty good, so it's not all bad.

While I agree with your stance on game reviews 100%, I'm completely lost as to how Days Gone sent you on this journey? The reviews have been all over the place. In fact it's suffering from the exact opposite of your examples. Instead of automatic great scores by reviewers that suck at games, they are rating it poorly when it is evident they didn't play more than an hour (gamespot score/5- did a tips video in which all they did is read the skill descriptions and the one bit of advice was for the very first camp, and horrible advice). IGN score 6.5 but do I need to describe that hot mess? "Another gruff white male protagonist." Even her reasoning for the score was mindboggling. A biker getting a slowmo ability is ludicrous in her eyes, but a cowboy, detective or hunter is somehow fine. I agree 99% of games reviews are horrible for the same reasons you listed (non-gamers, bought by the developers, ect). I'm just perplexed how days gone sent you there?
And honestly, Days deserves a score relative or better than a farcry game because of the divisive fun factor. Some will love it, some will find it boring. Overall though it's a beautiful game, mechanics are great, skills and upgrades feel rewarding, suffers from some technical bugs like audio delay and some rare framedrops at odd moments but you rarely encounter them (audio bugs the most prevalent). Just like farcry, a well built game with a few bugs and a polarizing enjoyment factor of you love it or hate it.

There's no denying that RDR 2 is one of (if not) the most technically impressive games ever made. Unfortunately I just couldn't stand the incredibly basic gameplay. It's almost emberassing that a game with that budget and that amount of man hours put into it, has such bad gunplay that the developer literally defaults your preferences to autoaim (not aim assist like other games mind you, it's full on autoaim). Besides this, I also had a lot of problems with the missions. I didn't finish the game, but like 30 hours in, every mission defaulted to: go to place, walk while people talk, and then shoot everyone when in every single mission, shit hits the fan at some point. Rinse and repeat. The game felt so casual to me that I just didn't get any satisfaction from playing it. Compare this to God of War, which had such good gameplay that I couldn't stop playing it, despite the problems I had with the story and worldbuilding in that game. I'm happy to be alone in my opinion about RDR2 though, because the devs definitely deserve praise after working that long on it.

It's just tedious fussing to get more story. If it was fun and engaging like dark souls / bloodborne? Awesome! If it was simple and light to get to the story at a more enjoyable pace? Not my thing, but I'd still at least play that! But "Do unfun tedious fussing for about 45 minutes EXACTLY HOW I SAY OR START THE F**K OVER" between every story beat gets so exhausting.

I don't agree with your idea that no game should ever be a 10/10, it kind of makes the scale useless if you don't utilize the entire scale. A 10/10 game doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, but it should be a masterpiece of gaming. I do agree that perfect scores are given out too frequently. I personally really like reviewers that rate games out of 7. 1/7 is terrible, 2 is really bad, 3 is below average, 4 is average, 5 is a good game, 6 is a great game, and 7 is a masterpiece. I think that's enough to really get across how good the game is but not so drawn out like giving something an 8.6 or whatever

@Azzury Street That's totally fine. Enjoyment of games is totally subjective. People get way too caught up in the weeds about game score but I think a game's score should be very general (roughly say how good it is, what parts of it were good and what was bad), and that should inform you if you personally should get the game or not. When reviewers try to rate out of 100 or out of 10 but give it a decimal point they're getting up their own ass too much, just say if the game is good or not and let that be it. In fact, that's what Mack does, he doesn't try to act all pretentious and give games some super precise score, he just says what hits the mark and what doesn't and either gives it a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

I know, no ones going to read my comment now, but I'll just take my time to write it anyway. I'm only 15 years old, from Austria, and I'm very interested in all the gaming industry. I've already thought about exactly this topic for about a year now. I've seen some small RUclipsrs addressing the same issue, but not taking any initiative, and keep making those "bad" reviews and everything. I'm happy to see you're taking responsibility in not producing those stupid reviews. I also want to spread this message (and more bullet points, about why the modern gaming industry sucks) around especially the younger gamers. Cause nearly everybody of my friends are the worst type of gamer you could expect. Just for an example, they say Fallout 76 was the best entry in the series, despite only having played Fallout 4 and maybe, but just maybe tried Fallout 3 at some point. They are not interested in how older games, had better ideas, better gameplay and were innovative. They just wanna see good graphics and thats it. I'm so fed up as well man, I can't describe it. I am actually going to start producing videos myself now, and taking initiative against this whole situation. I really appreciate every single one of ye out there supporting innovative indie titles, and not those AAA already completely corrupted publishers. I'm going to play some good old Fallout 1 now, or maybe Halo 2, see ya chaps, have a nice day!

I pre-ordered Halo2 (physical special edition copy (super cheap painted metal case which rusted)).
There was a massive queue waiting for the store to open.
I don't think any game release has come close to how big that was for the time.
Back then the industry was still fairly honest. Advertising, trailers, and gameplay footage was legit.
The hype was REAL, not artificial, not socially engineered, not pumped out by massive marketing firms. It was pure love for the medium, which the devs shared and were allowed to express in their work.
And gaming looked so promising back then, we all imagined how massive the scope, complexity and detail of games would be in the future. How much better the AI would be, how dynamic and atmospheric the worlds would be.
I don't think any of us could imagine the industry would turn into such a souless, money grabbing, bare minimum shell of it's former self.
No one pushing the limits of technology and programming (factorio is a good exception to this), no one making the scope of games larger than they had been before, simulations and dynamic systems creating truly unique emergent gameplay.
Games come so feature bare now and people don't seem to care?
Even in fairly a simple genre such as arena shooters. UT2004 for example came with
    - brilliant AI,
    - singleplayer modes and maps, tons and tons of maps.
    - plenty of difficulties to choose from,
    - mutators!
    - unrestricted modding
    - packaged dedicated server executable (seriously how did gamers let that slip away?)
    - no forced login or reliance on proprietary servers.
2004 was the peak of gaming in my opinion, revolutionary game one after the other, the least of which being UT2004.
    - WoW
    - HL2
    - GTA: SA
    - Halo 2
    - Burnout 3 Takedown
    - Far Cry
    - Hitman contracts
    - The Sims 2
    The list goes on!
(the next year producing my all time favorite Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, it's best feature IMO being how well and detailed the espionage story was written, especially compared to newer games "terrorist who don't like America and want to blow us up")
To this day can we really say current games have improved on all of these?
Or have they become homogenized, streamlined, and restricted?
What game has felt like a journey from start to finish, where you felt so cemented in the world it created around you like HL2? (maybe once with Bioshock!)
How can they be now with so many distractions baying for your attention? "social" features, DLC, micro-transactions, "cinimatics", zero-subtlety.
Oops.. I wrote a lot more than I thought.

      @screwball992 4 года назад

There are many reasons why games shouldn't get a 10/10 you use RDR2 for an example but look at this
      Aim preferences not working (PC)
      Animals not spawning
      Collector maps giving incorrect locations
      Infinite load screens
Lots of stuttering since the Moonshiners update
      Maggie not in Moonshine Shack
      Off-hand holster disappearing
Unable to pitch camp, camp invisible, camp despawning
      Unable to loot NPCs
      Unable to dig collectibles
Even in RDR2 there are reasons why it shouldn't get a 10/10.
I guess it's phrased wrong. Maybe we should say, it's possible for a game to get a 10/10 but it taking into account bugs and glitches and other aspects it's should be highly unlikely they will get a 10/10 because you need to ignore issues however small they are to get to that score.

As Oso 11 says, certain sites have shifted the mindset and as new gamers have come along they've taken the 'new' (wrong) way on board.
Mack is wrong about one thing though. 10 does not mean perfect when applied to a review. It simply means the highest score bracket, as in excellent. If translated to percentages, that puts it in the 91-100% range. 10 only means perfect when the results are objective (i.e. 10 questions are asked with objectively correct answers). As you said, no game can be truly called "perfect", which means if you assign that meaning to a 10 then it is effectively an unattainable score and makes the scale a 1 to 9 scale, which gives you less precision to communicate an overall evaluation numerically. If you are going to use a 1 to 10 scale in your reviews, I think a 10 should mean the game has the highest level of quality you could reasonably expect a game in its genre to have.

I've been saying this as well. Game reviews have become almost irrelevant to the quality of the game. You can clearly get a sense if which games are meant to do well and which aren't. A consensus starts to form after the first slew of positive (paid, "encouraged", whatever you want to call it) reviews that later reviewers don't want to stray far from.
I'm thankful for people like you. You're one of the last few who actually praises and criticizes games in turn on a point by point basis. That's how I know you're honest. You're happy to trash the bad aspects of a game and then in the next sentence state how great the sound is.
Normally you see reviewers do the approach where if they give a good score, every element is written as if it's great, and issues are glossed over, but if they give a bad score, even good elements they find a way to act as if they are trash.
At this point, I just view some footage and check forums to see what actual users are saying when they aren't being paid or under job security pressure to see what I might think of a game.

You know, I really have to agree about the atmosphere of games where everything is made to suck you in. That's the most important thing, but that' hardly ever addressed in reviews. Mostly it's "number of weapons" "number of maps" it's always easily quantifiable things, when really a lot of the most important things can't simply be quantified. Although, I will tell you, I have an advanced degree in economics, and we do a lot of statistics, and it's a problem everywhere. It's a real problem in the world. The most important things can't be quantified, but we have just come to love numbers more than actually important messages and insights.
Hey, If a game feels like it was made via "toolkit", then chances are it's just very boring to play because there's nothing to it that makes it special. If I've already played the same game, but with a different "skin" then I have very little reason to play it again.

Really wish this had more views. It’s a very good synopsis of how crooked the gaming industry has become. I wish to see change in my favorite artistic medium, but I fear the days of old where you had actual gameplay trailers, could own the full game when you bought it, and didn’t have to worry about the devs ruining their game mid life cycle because it was finished apon release, may be over due to the market growing so large in the past 10 years with players getting accustomed to getting pimped by the publisher/devs. Couple that with a mentality of profits over artistic integrity and expression and you get the modern video games industry. It makes me sad, but appreciative of the really special gems we’ve gotten in the past.

@Josiah Sepulveda yes minecraft is a brilliant game that is played by all age groups, i enjoy it also.

We have devs spending millions and millions of dollars on putting ray tracing in games, we have amaizing details in games. But have we inovated in game design, and game mechanics. Hell no!
We went from rpg's to action games wirh rpg elements. We went from 2d platformer to no platformers(except nintendo)
We went from multiple aaa studios making turn based rpg's to nowadays only a few non aaa studios making them.
We went from strategy games being a popular ganre to it being a niche ganre.
We went from fighting games being the staple of the game industry to a handful of aaa releases a year, which get no attention if at all.
But, we got run and gun fps games that are visual spectacles.
We got action-adventure one button to atack one button to dodge games.

I think one problem is the confusion over what different numbers mean. Common logic says that on a scale of 1-100, 50 is average/mediocre, but anyone raised with the American grading system is tought that 70-79% is a "C", which is average. This means that one person can give a 7/10 meaning that the game is mediocre, but people will read it as good. Reviewers are also less likely to give a game anything under 70% unless the game is REALLY bad, because people (and publishers) will complain that it shouldn't get a "D", which in our grading system means below average.
