- One of the advantages of using your smartphone with your DJI drone is that you can screen record the DJI software to show exactly what the pilot sees. But did you know that you can also screen record with the DJI RC2 on its built-in screen?
In this video, Kris shows how to take a screenshot using the DJI RC 2, take a screen recording with audio, transfer recordings and screenshots to an SD card, transfer to a Mac, and transfer to a PC. If you've wondered, "Where are screen recordings stored?" then this video will answer that question.
Also, if you can't find the "explore" link in the sd card notification area, there is a way to get it back, or navigate to where recordings are located without using an SD card.
The RC 2 is currently compatible with the DJI Air 3 and the Mini 4 Pro. The footage at the end is from the Mini 4 Pro.

Less Confused - Absolutely fantastic presentation. No one has covered the RC2 so in depth and complete. Thank You
I agree
Nice video. Your explanation was fabulous. I don’t know who came up with the file Management system for the DJI, but they must not have had much IU experience. The DJI drones UI are great, the file system sucks. Again, thanks for the detailed video explanation. ❤❤
Thanks very much for your comment. 👍Their file system is maddening! Ha ha
Hello Kris, YAHOO, thank you very much for this RC-2 controller tutorial🙏🙏. The video finally popped by as a suggestion. This is the tutorial I’ve been hoping to find since I’m new to the RC controllers. I’ve always used an iPad Mini for all my other DJI and Autel Lite + drones. A huge thanks to You and Kelly as I’ve flagged to watch again with the RC-2 in-hand.
Thanks very much, Steve!
This should come in handy for my new Air 3. Thanks for this. Great job!😊
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thought I was going to go insane trying to figure this out, but it all makes sense to me now. Biggest takeaway is I need to have a micro sd card installed, formatted and setup regardless of whether I intend to use it or not, for the EXPLORE option to appear in the pulldown menu :)
OK but what about screen recording directly recorded on the SD card inserted in the RC2 ? That's THE main use of the RC. Why should I have to copy internal recording to the SD and then to the Mac or PC ? That's one step more ! waste of time ! That's crazy.I can then better connect through USB C and download directly to the PC. DJI seems to have - at least for now - kill the use of SD card in RC. Hope there will be a firmware update that will correct that bug. If it was to be a hardware mistake, that would be another matter. DJI is so fast in bringing out new models that they make a lot of mistakes. They sell us dreams. Btw, I never experienced any problem recording on the SD in RC1 of M3P. Why is it so fishy different with our M4P ?
Agreed. It's frustrating.
Bingo...frustrating forsure x 100
This is a very helpful tutorial thank you
Extremely useful information......Thanks for making this awesome video!
Very nice video and good explanation. Thanks! Greetings from Brazil! 👏👏👏
This is great information Chris, thanks for making this process a little easier to understand. Great video, thanks for sharing. Happy New Year.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you great video
Thanks a lot for this video!!!!
Great information Kris! DJI sure did make it confusing on how to do all that! You better get that controller charged! Thanks for sharing! #DontTellMeWhatToDo #MoreConfused #LessConfused
Great information
Thanks, Eddie 👊
Wow your a wizard my friend! Would take me a while to get my head around it all! Great vid!!👌
Thanks 👍
very nice thanks
Awesome info Brother Waters
😎👊 Thanks Brother Bob!
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for uploading this tutorial, was very helpful. I got and SD card and was a bit confused about the process.
Absolutely! DJI doesn't make it very easy at all.
Thx, Kris
I have an external MIC system that has Type C that I have not tried with my RC2. Kris thanks for sharing all of this great information. I think I'm less confused but I'm probably wrong 😆. #DontTellMeWhatToDo #MoreConfused #LessConfused
Yep. Been using the DJI Mic on RC & RC-2 successfully for a while. Works really well. There are a few ways to monitor sound from the controller -easiest being a USB-C wired headset such as the AKG ones Samsung used to provide, when manufacturers provided STUFF with your purchase, like chargers, ND Filters (in Fly More Kits, etc) looking at YOU, DJI 😢
Hey John. Thanks for your comment. I'm guessing the wired headset would also have a mic built in? So if you wanted to use the DJI mic, you couldn't also use the headset?
Thank you, was trying to insert my card into a reader to transfer, yet the PC did not want to cooperate, Could not format either. Yet now understand that why there is a card slot in the controller and how to transfer over. Useful being able to transfer from the drone to the other card too.
So I will get two faster cards and format them with the controller instead, thx for tips
Thanks!
Thank you very much!!
Thx, im fixed sd card problem. Now İ can send my phone
It would indeed be convenient to have a feature for downloading screen recordings directly to the phone instead of relying on a PC. This would streamline the process and make it more user-friendly.
Thanks for the excellent breakdown of a file and transfer system that appears to have been created by a 3rd grader. DJI has GOT to get better at the logical aspect of all this. To have to go thru that many steps to access screen recording audio - used by lots of us in TV production - it needs to be much more logical. What a nightmare! Appreciate your efforts at making sense of it.
Thanks very much. I appreciate your feedback. DJI seemed to have rushed this out the door, or just didn't care about user experience.
The military should hire you as a secret decoder.
It is a shame they didn't include a Mic on there RC's The original Smart Controller had one but the Smartcontroller 2 and RC 2 don't yet they included one on the Enterpise version #DontTellMeWhatToDo as I may be #MoreConfused now
Agreed, Trevor, a built-in mic would be useful.
Thanks for watching, and sorry for confusing you! 😅
Hello, I have a smart RC2 with mini 4 pro and plugged in a USB mic but cannot get it saved. In the settings, audio record is permitted while using the dji Fly app. what do I wrong?
I'm not sure that I understand. As far as I know, there aren't really any settings that you can change on the RC 2.
My only guess is that your microphone isn't working or the cable you're using isn't the correct one.
Thanks for the informative video, yes, it is confusing, but I hope this is not a silly question, why do you do recordings and screen shots, what purpose are they used and why? TIA.
Personally, I screen record for every flight, just in case something goes wrong and I lose the drone, I can review the footage with all the on screen elements.
It's also useful when creating tutorials to show other drone pilots.
Screen shots can be useful if you want to remember certain camera settings, or something, you can refer back to them.
thank you very much...@@readysetdrone
Besides “formatting” is there a way to get the SD card “tile” back into the “Notifications” section? Mine is never there, and I would rather hit “explore” than go through the other steps you mentioned of navigating the file system through “music.”
I haven't found a method other that formatting. I've tried restarting. I've tried ejecting and reinserting the SD card. No luck.
Hopefully DJI will release an update to fix this silliness!
I've used the audio on my RC Pro controller which is a similar procedure. #DontTellMeWhatToDo I might actually be #MoreConfused but with your help I'm #LessConfused. LOL
Haha! Wow, Gerry. Way to include all of the hashtags! 😂👍
I'm more confused, but it's workable.
What player should I use on my PC?
All videos are jerky like it has a hickups.
Welcome to the club of confusion! Ha! VLC is usually my go-to PC player.
1:47 Make you can tell you getting Audio by the GREEN bar moving left to right.
I'm not noticing a green bar moving on screen. Do you see it in this video?
Do you know if any other brand besides the DJI wireless mic would work?
I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen others use a wired USB-C mic, of another unknown brand, and record audio that way, so apparently, it's possible.
@@readysetdrone Thank you.
Yes very confused !
Already hate that,
won‘t used it !
Thank you ❤
Ha! Good choice!
Suggestion: Confusing yes, but "if" you take one step at a time, learn then move to the next. Its like dialing in a scope on a rifle, one click at a time. If a 80 y/o can do it, there's no dought you can also.
I noticed that the frame rate of the recorded video from the screen are allways different. Do you know why? and how to set a fixed frame rate?
I think DJI does that to save on file size. I don't believe there's any way to adjust the frame rate. This controller is very limited to begin with, and the software, as shown in the video, is not user-friendly, so I doubt that they care to give us the flexibility to change the frame rate of screen recordings.
@@readysetdrone Thank you for the answer.
Double swipe down 😢 Now i know why they call you smart Kris
#donttellmewhattodo #moreconfused
@@chriswedgworth😂Haha! The real reason is because Chris Hope called me eevil Kris in this video, but has being trying to backtrack ever since. LOL (yes I spelled that word with two "ee" because RUclips was shadow blocking my comment!) ruclips.net/video/sqQptdvd4hY/видео.html
I never "double swipe" - too complicated. Just single Swipe 2x. 😅
@@BlairAir Hahah! Of course, John.
My RUclips playlist indicated that this video was “updated” today 11/5/23. Is that true? What did you update?
That's strange. I wouldn't even know how to update it.
you dont need to do all of that file system stuff to get to the menu to view your videos. just tap the [ > ] play button under the record button on the main screen. its all there for your drone files and controller files using the top two menu items.
That's true, but only when you're connected to the drone. When you're dealing with local files on the RC 2, you have to jump through DJI's software hoops.
@@readysetdrone oh I got ya! That makes sense.
How did you record yourself to the RC? Did you use the USBC to your camera ?
I had the drone turned on and pointed at me. Then I did a screen recording.
Such a polished EU experience to capture all the "data"but why can't they help us file explore INSIDE of the device to retrieve.
I'm simply still confused - I eventually find the stuff, probably following this advice will train me to get there - BUT I still feel like i'm playing Mortal Combat II... I know the major player moves but simply keep pushing buttons until someone goes into Fatality 😊
Haha!
Would be ace if you could transfer via Bluetooth to phone for screen shots and recordings
Bluetooth for video would be agonizingly slow! But a fast "air drop" type of solution would be nice, for sure!
Is there any way to download the screen recording straight to the phone ? Thank you
I believe there is Bluetooth sharing; however, with my experience trying that on previous DJI controllers, it was way too slow for video transfers. For screen shots, it's ok though.
I didn't even explore that option here because I felt that it's not really practical.
@@readysetdrone so , its better to take out the micro Sd card , and put it into a laptop ? I have bought a Dji mic , and i want to use it to record audio on video . Sorry for my bad english . What its the best solution for me ?
Yes, definitely. Using an SD card or a cable directly from the RC to your laptop are the best solutions. Wireless is too slow.
@@readysetdrone thank you ! I appreciate . I have the micro SD adapter ( i think that is the name ) that thing that you put the card inside and it connects to pc / laptop !
Good info👍. Looks like Dji has made it so cumbersome to use and access the internal storage, screen shots and the like, that for me, it’s useless and will not be using it👎
Yeah, agreed, it's a bit of a pain. Thanks for your comment.
confused have watch it again lol
theres an option to save directly to the SD card from the settings in the RC controller, but its just as janky and you'll need to toggle that option everytime you take the SD card out... its so frustrating, and my dads not very tech savy so im stuck doing this for eternity 😂
I don't know why DJI does this to us! 🫤😆
DJI need to do thier own OS… I really hate that android is spoiling my experience with this controller
good info but my squeaky scottish voice won't register on any mic. known fact
Lol Johnny! 😅
Thanks, more or less lol
Lol 🤣

More confused. Great video though.
Ha! I'm right there with you. Thanks for commenting.
Hey, Kris. In yesterday's email I spelled your name wrong and wanted to apologize. No hard feeling I hope. I'm old school and spelled it "Chris".
Hi Bill. No problem. Your email probably went to Kelly, but he's out of town currently, so I'll have to wait to ask him about it. If you want to email me directly, I'm at kris@readysetdrone.com

More confused...good grief the brain damage
Haha sorry!
toooooo complicated!
😄 Agreed!
Im sorry but what a hassle to view pictures and video's....job well do e sir for your tutorial but ... my thoughts of ariel photography are fading if this down loading procedure to view pictures/video hoop jumping is like this, I suspect many new pilots are frustrated with this procedure as well....anyone interested in a relative new m3 classic complete with fly more package, soft and hard storage cases,65w chargersx2 never used camera or video unable to figure out screen shot transfers or adding audio to video's...to much navigating , menu jumping around...brain damage.
This like new m3classic is located in Minnesota
Ps m3classic with rc pro controller
Thanks for commenting. I definitely hear you and my frustration is shared with many, however, keep in mind that this is mainly related with this RC.
The actual footage is still stored on the micro SD card in the drone, so a lot of people who don't need to screen record probably won't worry about all this hassle.
To preview footage taken on the drone (while still connected) you can still tap on the media icon within the fly app (just below the record button).
It's still disconcerting that DJI doesn't make all aspects of their software user friendly.
@readysetdrone so how to add audio to drone sd card footage? I don't see how video's only show usb-c microphone attached to controller to add audio which is a problem for us not so techy pilots, in my case retired no home puter or lap top just my smart phone ( not iPhone) for starters using phone wifi hot spot, its a frustrating problem, i was hoping this audio video play wouldn't be such an issue, but thanx for you incite
Oh I believe I understand your goal. If you're hoping to have your commentary over your flight footage, you could try two methods.
1. Screen record your RC Pro (note that this video is about the RC 2, so your controller will be less of a hassle when it comes to finding and transferring footage). Then you can copy the screen recording to an SD card, plug in the SD card to your phone via an adapter, and being that video into your phone's editing software to line up with the high quality drone recording. Finally, you could hide the screen recorded video (while keeping the audio audible) so that you'll only see the high quality drone video in your final export.
2. Another option is to forget screen recording on your RC Pro and just use your phone as a voice recording device in your front shirt pocket. Then when you record on your drone, be sure to film yourself doing a couple of claps on camera. That way once you bring the audio from your phone and the video from the drone into CapCut or your preferred software, you'll be able to visually line up your voice over.
Neither solution is elegant, but that's all I can think of.
Im out, sale pending on my m3 classic,i hate selling it but way over my head, ill wait until Ai kicks in,suspect china will retool and streamline this video ,audio bs down the road then ill retry.
Thanx again
