    You won't believe this, but, you/your channel got me back to drawing after 15 years of hiatus, I started drawing again this year after I stumbled upon your channel during this time of crisis and I am so thankful and grateful because of that. You and your videos are an inspiration to me and everyone else in the art community, because, your videos are easy to understand, it's calm and vibrant and also you are a really good artists and a really good teacher.
    I also have a drawing when I was 14 and it was way back 16 years ago, probably the last drawing I have ever drawn in my teenage years, I would really like to share that old drawing with you. Once again thank you so much! And hopefully you continue what you love most and God bless you and your whole family.

    If you struggle identifying values painting more won’t help. Observation is what is needed. Observe your surroundings all day long. Identify the darkest and lightest values in what you are looking at. Then move on to identify lightest to darkest. Darkest to lightest. Keep observing. Keep exercising. You aren’t creating art during this time but you are creating the skills it takes to create the art. It can’t be skipped over.

    For people those who can't afford gouache, can use poster color white or white acrylics. Or more genius is you can use correction pen or whitener. It really works for me for highlights! So this is a small tip from me.

    Regarding using more than one medium in your art, I’m doing that right now. I’m currently designing a Christmas card, and I’ve used oil pastels, a correction pen, a mechanical pencil, and colored pencils. Pretty close to being done. Can’t wait ‘til I’m finished!

    I've been doing more pre planning and following the advise in this video (before I watched it LOL) for a while now and it really helps a lot!
    I'd add consider painting 2 or three paintings at the same time so you can swap between them while a previous one dries.
    You can also take literal written planning notes. I sometimes do this, when I do I write each step in a different coloured pen so I can look for a colour for what step I'm on.
    Organize the supplies in nearby piles and don't be afraid to use lables, pot it notes, and other written notes to help.
    I'd say sketchbooks and a mix of written and art (sketch) notes help a lot!
    When you are painting more original imaginative work (rather than copying a reference directly)
    Gather and display the various references clearly. And consider doing scrap paper mini painting tests AND consider doing a decent tonal study as reference.
    In rare cases (where you absolutely want the best results) Paint rough versions of the final art first to use as reference repainting it until its 'done'.
    To save money often using the less expensive papers for the practice/rough versions. Keeping in mind the differences that will happen with the materials and hoe the paper effects things.
    I also work in many media including digital. Sometimes I do a full digital 'reference' painting before re-painting it traditionally!
    I often do digital roughs for ink, watercolour and acrylic paintings I intend to be my 'highest effort' category. such as if it is an important gift for a loved one.
    In rare cases the 'rough' will be perfect because you relaxed and took the pressure off, in such a case I advise stopping if the rough is already your 'best work'.
    Good luck everyone!
    Fun video.

    • @FineArtforChrist
      @FineArtforChrist 3 года назад +1

      Wow, that was a lot of great advise. I just hope all that planning doesn't keep you from having fun!

    • @valasafantastic1055
      @valasafantastic1055 3 года назад

      @@FineArtforChrist It's still fun for me LOL! It's more for ONLY when the results are more important such as a Birthday or Christmas present for a very close friend or my Mother. Or for an artwork for commission or for one for myself I really want 'right' that I intend to put up on the wall, etc. Not for every painting. I also tend to do even more research and reference gathering rough sketches, planning and thumbnails for those 'important artworks'. You also learn a lot when you put the extra effort in I find at least personally.

      Kirsty uses the Arches cold press watercolor paper for her watercolor pieces. Yes, her paper buckles too however she tapes it down so whenever it gets out of hand she can just let it dry. It will flatten out again as it dries, then she can come back to it and keep working. Also the size of your paper will determine how much it buckles as well. The larger the sheet of paper the more buckling you will experience. Hope this is helpful!

    I know you've done a bunch of graphite hair tutorials but would you be able to do one where the hair is wet? I just can't get it right without it looking like plastic.

      Assuming you are working from a good reference photo, it should have all the information you need. So here are my two biggest tips:
      1.) Watch how the hair clumps and clusters together (think of the hair in terms of sections not strands)
      2.) Then look at each clump individually and really study it to make sure you are getting your values right within each section.
      Hope this is helpful! If you have any further questions on this subject please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you. I would appreciate your it input.

      Hey Sharon, I'd recommend working larger. That way you have more space to fit all the detail you are after. Be patient though since working bigger will make the project take longer. Hope this is helpful!

      Kirsty has more videos on charcoal than graphite so if you want to learn from her specifically then that would be the way to go. I however think that graphite is easier to learn, and it doesn't require any special paper. So if you are looking for a medium with less of a learning curve, then I'd recommend graphite. Hope this is helpful!
