I was born in England 50 years ago; British savoury meals are some of the most blandest, especially Fish & Chips, straight out of a deep-fryer the only discernible flavour is cooking oil, how delicious can that be?.

Glad you liked it. In some ways the English seaside is like an anachronism, a bygone destination from a time (1950s) when Brits all flocked to the coast for the summer. But then commercial airlines came, and people could jet to Europe for the weekend. The whole world opened up and the seaside towns got left behind. Good to know they still bring joy in this day and age.

Bridlington is a seaside town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is on the Holderness part (Flamborough Head to the Humber estuary) of the Yorkshire Coast by the North Sea. The town is about 28 miles (45 km) north of Hull and 34 miles (55 km) east of York. The stream called Gypsey Race flows through the town and enters the North Sea at the harbour.
The Priory Church of St Mary and associated Bayle (or gate) are Grade I listed buildings on the site of an Augustinian Priory. As a sea-fishing port, the town is known for shellfish, and is the largest lobster port in Europe, with over 300 tonnes of the crustaceans landed there each year. It has been termed the "Lobster Capital of Europe".[3][4][5] Alongside manufacturing, retail and service firms, its main trade is summer tourism. It holds one of the UK's coastal weather stations.
    History
    Ancient history
Archaeological evidence shows habitation of the area around the Bronze Age and Roman Britain era. The date of earliest habitation at Bridlington is unknown, but the 2.5-mile (4 km) man-made Danes Dyke at nearby Flamborough Head goes back to the Bronze Age.[6]
A Roman road from York, now Woldgate, can be traced across the Yorkshire Wolds into the town. Roman coins have been found: two hoards in the harbour area, along with two Greek coins from the second century BC - suggesting the port was in use long before the Roman conquest of Britain.[7]
In the fourth century AD, Count Theodosius set up signal stations on the North Yorkshire coast to warn of Saxon raids. It has been suggested that the current town was built near the site of a Roman maritime station called Gabrantovicorum.[8] In the early second-century, Ptolemy described what was possibly Bridlington Bay in his Geography as Γαβραντουικων Ευλίμενος κόλπος "Gabrantwikone bay suitable for a harbour". No sheltered ancient harbour has been found, coastal erosion will have destroyed traces of any Roman installation near the harbour.
Another station at Flamborough Head is also believed to have had one - probably on Beacon Hill (now a gravel quarry) from where Filey, Scarborough Castle and the Whitby promontory can be seen. Another suggestion has been a line of signal stations stretching south round Bridlington Bay. A fort at Bridlington would have made a centre of operations for these. This counterpart to the northern chain would have guarded a huge accessible anchorage from barbarian piracy.

The old town is brilliant you can get a taxi,Bus or walk it’s only a few miles.
Old town has lots of pubs, shops galleries, antique shops. Plus the Bayle gate museum then on to the Priory Church well worth a visit!!

I used to own a B&B in Brid back in the 90's. There used to be a large square in the town centre, edged by loads of wonderful small shops where you could get everything from a hair grip to a car service. In the centre of the square was the bus station where people could travel in from miles around and be straight into the town centre. The council, in their wisdom, spent an EU grant of around 10m by demolishing this square, pushing all the traders out - tearing out the heart of the town in my opinion, and in its place they built a shopping centre. The bus station was moved out of town about a mile from the seafront, at a stroke slashing the elderly daytrippers. The shopping centre didn't achieve full capacity in the 5 years I remained in Brid, probably still hasn't. We eventually sold up and moved away.

    Religious sites
    Bridlington Priory
Holy Trinity Church (Church of England)
The main Anglican place of worship is the Priory Church of St Mary in Church Green. Christ Church in Quay Road, next to the war memorial, was built in 1841 by Gilbert Scott. Originally a chapel of ease, it became a parish church in 1871 and is now a Grade II listed building.[85] Emmanuel Church in Cardigan Road is a modern red-brick building, also part of the Church of England.
The Harbourside Evangelical Church stands in a side road off Bridge Street. The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is in Station Avenue. The Cornerstone Church, once known as The Chapel Hall, is an Evangelical Church in St John's Walk.[86] There has been a Baptist church in the town since 1698, the current place of worship being on the corner of Quay Road and Portland Place.[87] On the corner of St John Street and Brett Street is the Free Presbyterian Church.[88] The independent Evangelical Church in Ferndale Terrace is called Calvary Chapel by the Sea.[89]
The strong Methodist Church presence in the town since 1770 is covered in various locations. St John's Burlington Methodist Church in St John's Street remains. The chapel in the Promenade lasted from 1852 until 1957 as part of the United Methodist Free Church. The Primitive Methodists established a chapel in St John Street in 1833, but moved to a nearby location in 1849. This in turn was rebuilt in 1877 and lasted until 1970. The Primitive Methodists also had a chapel known as the Central Methodist Church on the Quay in 1833. It moved to Chapel Street in 1870 and built itself larger premises there in 1878. In 1969 it joined with the Chapel Street Methodist Church, which was in existence in 1810 in what was originally Back Street. This was rebuilt in 1873 and lasted until 1999, when it became the final Methodist congregation to unite with the present church.[90]
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Peter stands in Victoria Road. The Catholics had long lacked a permanent mission in the town. A previous 1886 building in Wellington Road had not provided sufficient space when a mission was eventually granted. Modern premises were built in 1893-1894 by Arthur Lowther. The church hall adjacent was added in 1963. The connection to the sea is evident on the dedication to Our Lady, also known as the Star of the Sea, and to St Peter, Patron Saint of Fishermen. The convent in the High Street is associated with the church and though now run by the Sisters of Mercy, was originally Dominican.[91]

I don`t think Fish & Chips are what they used to be, but this may be due to my age. A few years ago I mentioned to a Doctor that the strumming of the guitar at the beginning of the song, " Mull of Kintyre" seemed odly out of tune to me - and I asked him if this might be due to the loss of cillia ( `hair`) of a certain height in my ears being lost ( everybody has cillia in their ears ). The height would correspond to a certain frequency of sound waves `hitting` the cillia. He said to me, " You`ve hit the nail on its head.... ( and there`s F`all we can do about it ). "
Now I wonder if the same thing is happening with my taste buds.
As we get older all of our cells suffer apoptosis, and the typical regeneration number is about 50. Which means that most of our somatic - body - cells divide about 50 times and then begins the `decline` due to age.
Interestingly, cancer cells never stop dividing and will go on and on.... this is what makes them so deadly. They lose contact inhibition with neighbouring cells - which means they lose a signal to stop !... and so go on dividing / replicating. They are known, rather ironically, as Immortal Cells.
I think it was in the late 1950`s that an American lady called Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer. How it came about I don`t know, but Scientists / Doctors obtained a sample of her cancerous cells ( it might have been in taking a biopsy )....Anyway, those cells taken from her are still growing / living and are used in cancer research. They are known as HeLa Cells.
`Sorry for the wide digression. I often write my memories down.
Ps, heck - if you lived here ( in The East Riding of Yorkshire / North Lincolnshire ) you`d soon get into mainland Europe. Spain has the most fantastic of Festivals you could possibly imagine. You`d almost have to have a medical examination to certify ones fitness to endure the Festivals of Spain. They are Insane !
`Glad the three of you came to my neck of the woods and enjoyed it - notwithstanding this is a cold start to Spring.
