While Alan did all the work. Remember it was Alan that found David’s gear so he knew exactly what David was doing. I remember telling Alan that he had to stop David, that the heroin would kill him. To say he was taken aback by those words coming out of my 16 year old mouth is an understatement. He truly wanted to help David. He truly cared about him. David thanks him by not standing by him and not supporting him against Andrew. Alan was entirely alone. If you watch Devotional or were close enough to the stage to watch Alan; he never took his eyes off David. Totally hyper vigilant. He was scared for him. No good eyed goes unpunished. People go on about Dave and Martin, yeah lyrics were good, but the soundscape Alan created is what made them truly great. They have never sounded as good as they did during the Wilder years. That’s not just studio sound, that covers all the live sound as well, which Ala EQed and loaded. He made all their backing tracks. Just compare devotional Stripped to every live version since. Utter shit. They didn’t need live drums. They used them frugally, now eigner and his fucking drum solos ruin everything.

I' alittle bit tired of this. I love Alan and his work, but this "never got the same after Alan left" is a bullshit call, cause DM also never get the same after some great rewards, or, violator. DM ALWAYS devolped and made way different lp to the one ago. That's always, even WITH Alan something what's DM always has been all about. Devolp and suprising, and also make a hard break to the past and try something new. SofaD is the lp who stands out and wasn't the same like Violator. It makes no difference with or without Alan, DM never has been the same again and again.

@@chaosMV You're are completely wrong, when Alan left DM were a bit of a ship without a rudder, very hit and miss, yes the DM sound always evolves but they lost a creative edge when Alan left and before that you could listen to a DM album without skipping tracks, they dropped a level in production, diversity and creative input. This is fact, I'm just glad DM are still going and we get some good new songs now and again but I don't kid myself they are anywhere as good as they used to be.

Please excuse my bad english but I want something to express.
Dave said in an interview, a few days ago ,about the "Alan question" ,something like that.
"Look how short time Vince was in the band ...and also Alan was not such a long time ... 10-12 years maybe. And its now nearly 30 years ago!So what?!"
I think he is right BUT ....in my opinion ....the early days ...also with Vince ...but for sure and absolutely the time with Alan , was the "biggest" time in their career. They created themselves...they created new sounds ....new clothing...attitude.....and unforgettable melodies. That was most important time for them.Without it , they couldn't have reached the position in music history that they got. They made some good music after Alan had left the band ...right.But in my opinion you can't easily say ....the time in the band is the, or a most important fact.It is what HAPPENED IN/AT THIS TIME.And that was awesome and the best ,when Alan was member of depeche Mode.
The time after he left brought some good music. But without the "Alan-time" they had never reached such an awesome success...and meaning for music.

you're right but you forget these guys are people with their own egos. How would it make Martin look if he begged Alan do come back only to do things again to his music he didnt like? Even though it was the key to DMs success, Martin never really liked or supported what Alan did. Also, its not important for the band to make good or very good music anymore. they do if for the live shows and tickets - they dont need Alan for that.

Even though Wilder had left there was still enough atmosphere and layered, textured sound in Ultra (Tim Simenon did a great producing job there) to make it probably their final quality product. Take the strings on "Home" for example, just beautiful. They would never be the same again after AW's departure of course, but this is a last hurrah. Daryl took the video but it was Alan’s equipment. He always filmed wherever they were at. There’s the mtv music awards that are from his collection here.

@@garryiglesias4074 I meant 16mm. Anton’s work from Violator and Sofad was shoot with 16mm. Kind of his trademark. Even from the Music for the masses era. Strange compilation was completely shoot with 16mm. Same for some Strange too videos.

As a musician who knows Depeche Mode, all those analog synth in the back are just for the picture. They were not used in the album. They have an Atari ST computer probably with Notator Logic. Alan was 33. I am 47 and I still not better than him =)
