Tirana forever. Trees everywhere you walk. Even in Blloku. Mountains. Lake. Most coffee shops per capita in Europe. Good food. Very reasonable. Safe!! Colourful and vibrant. Friendly helpful and generous people.
I found Belgrade to be a place with people who have a lot of money, but they're strangely have a lot of time on their hands. Nice to swim in the Danube when it's hot.
Heres something you may find interesting. :) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey''...... .....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :) Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's. The name it self has a suffix, '' -iye '', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to', just like the Latin suffix of '' -ia '', which exists in such country names like Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Latv-ia, Roman-ia etc etc again meaning 'land of/belonging to'. Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish is much older, ancient Turkish been over ten thousand years old. Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble '' Türkiye '' we got various spellings like; Turquía (in Spanish), Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) Turkei (in Germn) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye. Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named 'turkey'.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''..... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''Turkey'' and later ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years. Now in modern times, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on the map, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected. So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name to Türkiye, which it always was. Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)
Thank you made to add Sarajevo to near top of the list. I am Bosnian, i am proud you like Sarajevo. Yes, Sarajevo deserve this, people are friendly, food is one of the best in Balkan. And, prices is very good for all visitors. And Sarajevo has one for best accomodations on the Balkan.
I'm glad Tirana is ranked quite higher, beating some other Balkan capitals. Who could have thought? Imagine 20 years ago, the city was on its knees, a total rubbish, coming out from a deep isolation followed by a rambunctious " free for all, free for everybody"with not a single infrastructure in place and I was happy to run away from there....Now, the city is getting better year after year, and you need to see it 4-5 years later when some of the projects in place are done. Thank you, Edi Rama, for changing the face of the whole Albania, not only the capital!
Bucharest has much more to offer than the "Historic center" that is definitely just for tourists, and maybe that gave it that vibe. There are many more old boulevards like Elizabeta, strada Polona, the area around The Arch of Triumph, as well as many jams in and around the city like Palatul Mogosoia. When you discover the city, you can fall in love with it.
Experience of visiting Balkan capitals depends heavily on the weather conditions. If you go there from the late fall to the early spring, all of these cities will look depressing. But if you go there during the nice weather, you will experience a whole another world. List is relatively accurate, maybe Tirana and Sofia should be lower.
I think May is a great time to go! Weather should be pretty good without being too boiling. Bosnia & Herzegovina is extremely safe, I never felt in any sense of danger or sketchiness at all. People were really kind and generous. Just be aware that in Bosnia you may see a few child beggars coming up to restaurants etc and some more overt signs of poverty (compared with Montenegro which is in places like Kotor/Budva are just tourist playgrouns for wealthier people) - but you get beggars all over Europe (Italy, France, Greece etc). Enjoy! 🇧🇦
@@TravellingWithCon Thanks, Is there any tips you would like to give? like some places that I should definitely go and which to avoid. Or any other tips in general.
@@while_true_travel I made a video about Sarajevo here: ruclips.net/video/8SgRxtnaZI0/видео.htmlsi=85AKh2m5RqkzspKI and feel free to check out my Sarajevo and Mostar playlists on my channel homepage!
I certainly liked Athens, it surprised me having read so many negative reviews before going! It’s vibrant, colourful great food, history and nightlife! 🇬🇷
Judging solely based on appearance, I would put Sofia in the first place, followed by Ljubljana and Zagreb. But if we take into account the sightseeing factor, i.e. keeping tourists busy for as long as possible, then Athens is indeed on the first place. 😃
Sofia is not a beautiful city. The Bulgarians have a joke:"what's the best thing to do in Sofia- to get out of there." But it probably has to do with the rest of the city, not the city center.
I am a Serb from Canada you been ranking Serbia and reviewing Belgrade; there were things i didn't like what you said but what you said was. belgrade is Definitely worth visiting and the trying the food now. yes. I agree Serbia isn't that Popular. people don't what Serbia is... like from U.S. or the UK... but Serbia is the motherland.and we are great people.and friendly. "Hvala što ste posetili Srbiju"
I think that the best city is one where you have friends that could show you local hidden places and take you around, so you could have good time . Friends who drinks, preferably...
I think Tirana is going to be experiencing a lot of development on the next few years with the rise in demand for people wanting to visit Albania! It will have positives and negatives, like higher prices for locals etc
Split is definitely better than Zagreb but on top of them both - Dubrovnik, highly recommended. Kind of knew you would put Athens 1st. Never been there but from what you showed, it is not that impressive, unless you like the big crowds. About Sofia - you are totally right - if you don't know where the night life is, you will most probably miss it as it is not concentrated in the city centre. Also, Sofia during weekends, public holidays or summer is not Sofia during normal working days.
@@ki5739 food and drinks were a little more expensive in Oslo, but I found there were cheaper accommodation options in Oslo compared with peak summer in Dubrovnik. But I imagine that in off-season, Dubrovnik accommodation would be much cheaper. So I think overall Oslo is more expensive!
Puttin Romania as balkan is limit I'd say. For the lolz sure. But Tirana over Bucharest? I've visited both as a tourist. You have much more things to do in Bucharest.
Ahah well “partially” Romania is in the Balkan peninsula, so I’ll include it aha. And yes I do think there are more things to see/do from a tourist perspective in Bucharest, so Bucharest may be better from a tourist perspective, but I just feel like with the cheaper prices and the lively character that Tirana has, I think I will give the edge to Tirana just
Ha ha ha ha, Romania has been classified as a Balkan country for as long history and geo-politics has been taught. So it has been for Slovania and Hungary, but these two no longer are being mentioned as Balkan countries. Also, It has been just last 10 years suddenly Romanians feel not to be part of the Balkans. In the end I would be surprised if Albania or Montenegro would reject being part of Balkan area lol
Montenegro is a very nice and beautiful country, unfortunately there is barely anything to do in Podgorica overall certainly compared to Sarajevo for instance.
@@TravellingWithCon I've only been there once for a few hours, I thought Perast was really nice and obviously Kotor too. I did not go to Budva or Tivat.
I have been to seven Balkan capitals so far, and my ranking would be: 1. Belgrade: ZNAM ZA JEDAN GRAD ZOVE SE BEOGRAD! It does not offer as much as let's say Sarajevo in terms of sightseeing, but Belgrade certainly excels on the experience side. It might be one of the most vibrant cities one can visit. Nightlife, cultural scene, history... Belgrade offers all. 2. Ljubljana: I really think the weather makes the difference. It is one of the most picturesque and lovely capital cities in Europe, especially in late spring-early summer. The one reason why I rank Ljubljana so high is the day trip opportunities. While Ljubljana itself can be visited in its entirety in a day, it is a great hub for day trips. It is quite easy to take public buses to do day trips to Piran, Bled, Bohinj etc. and then enjoy the evening hanging out in all the pubs and cafes on the Ljubljanica river. 3. Sarajevo: It is one of the most unique cities in Europe for sure. A city that should be absolutely visited. However, this is a city where the traumas of war and genocide are still palpable. For people familiar with the history, visiting Sarajevo becomes a quite gloomy and emotionally heavy experience. 4. Tirana: I agree with you. On the uglier side, not much to do as a tourist, but quite vibrant and pleasant. 5. Zagreb: I mostly agree with your points. It simply punches below its weight compared to the other Balkan capitals. 6. Skopje: It used to be one of the major cities of Ottoman Europe. Nowadays, it is far from its former charm. First, the earthquake in 1963 destroyed a significant part of the city, and then the corrupt Gruevski regime spent billions of dollars to build ugly monstrosities in the middle of the city centre. What could be one of the most charming capital cities turned into one of the ugliest. Only worth visiting for a day. 7. Podgorica: There's nearly nothing to see or do. It is a boring government town built mostly during the communist era. The first 3 are great destinations, next 2 would get a passing grade, unfortunately the bottom 2 are not even in competition with the others. One small note: Most buses travelling from Bosnia/Croatia direction pass through the Bay of Kotor even if they have Podgorica as the final destination. So, it is not necessary to use it even as a transit point, you can just get off at Herceg Novi, Kotor or Budva.
You comment is fantastic! Thank you for your rankings. It’s really interesting to see your opinion and see how others view the cities! Really useful information too. Thank you!
I liked it to be honest; I appreciate the effort you put into making this. I am not sure Romania is considered a Balkan country, but I am not going to disagree either. I tried different cities in this region as well, maybe not so many capitals, but I would say Bosnia and Herzegovina is highly underrated. Anyway, keep up the good work! This video was really good!
Romania's south (below translvania and the carpathians) is considered apart of the balkans. The rest is either eastern europe or central (which is basically the same thing as eastern europe)
@@AlbanianManIB Romanians consider themselves more connected with France than Balkans. Please do not insult their Western roots..at the same time they are Dacians.
I don’t think I would want to live in Athens - I’d rather live in some of these other Balkan cities in this list! But for me, Athens’ tourist attractions and food are some of the best in the world. As a tourist, it’s a great tourist city
@@TravellingWithCon The city is way too overstreched as its not allowed to build higher than the Parthenon so the city sprawling is an urban nightmare for basic infrastructure like roads, sewers, water and lighting, walking, parks, there's graffiti and trash everywhere as services suffer to cover all that area for days, architecture also is basic as it gets, all buildings must be white etc. To be honest I wouldn't spend a day in Athens even for a day and head right away to islands and beach areas.
Wait a minute please.. Athens is not a nightmare for the millions of people who actually live there. I actually lived and worked in Athens for 8 years, and I enjoyed the multicultural and cosmopolitan life, the very rich and vibrant cultural life ( unequalled for the theatre), the proximity of wild Mountain áreas and beautiful beaches, the very convenient ferry ( + bus, airplane, train ) connections to every single island and corner of Greece ).
@@TravellingWithCon I understand, but better to say that you have not been there than questioning if you have to include Kosovo as a state in the Balkans, becouse Kosovo it is an independent country in the heart of the Balkans, recognised by most of the countries of this planet, including most important countries like the US, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and so on! Your accent sounds either british or australian and i am sure your country recognises Kosovo as an independent country in the Balkans!
I`m pretty damn sure if you visited Ljubljana in Summer it would be top 3 - feel free to prove mw wrong but you need to visit us again before doing that :)
its just personal oppinion ,,,,and guys stop defend your countries(became borring)....leave the others to have an oppinion based on theirs personals exprs....
It’s not boring, it’s just your lack of interest in what city offers. Sarajevo has very rich history, great museums, the best food in Balkans, very diverse architecture and a lot of spots with fantastic nature around the city.
@@melpomenathemuseok maybeit depends what you are doing as a turist. I should write: Sarajevos nightlife barely exists. Food is great, architecture is ok, museums I didn’t visit - I didnt know they are worth visiting. Old crumbling olympic infrastructure is not interesting to me. Bascarsija, which was the most interesting place 20 years ago (I visited Sarajevo for the first time in 2006) was great. Today, the shops that were most interesting to me are very rare. Mostly phone repair shops and such BS. Overall nice city but boring. My personal opinion, I’m glad you liked it. I suggest people visit Sarajevo in the time of the film festival, thats a great time to visit. Otherwise - boring.
To consider Sarajevo better than Sofia, Bucharest and Belgrade is so ridiculous that does not deserve any comment. Only Bucharest and Athens in the Balkans have any chance to compete with Sofia if you know what Sofia can offer as tourist destination, museums, temples, history, hotels, gardens, transport, nature near the city and more.
I found Sarajevo to be fascinating from a recent history and cultural perspective! And Bosnia is home to fantastic nature, waterfalls and lakes too! I’d probably rather live long term in Belgrade for example, but Sarajevo is one of the best cities to visit in the balkans
The most interesting: Sarajevo. The most interesting to live: Belgrade. Highest quality of life: Lubijana. Most boring: Athens. Ugliest: Bucharest Ugly as well: Tirana, Sofia. Nothing Special: Zagreb (it looks like Belgrade 2.0 without Danube)
Honestly as a Croat that lives in Dalmatia I must agree that Zagreb sucks. I've been to Zagreb a few times and every time its depressing as hell. I love the architecture I have to give it that but as a capital of a European country it really isn't that good. Dalmatia is way more exciting and beautiful, nature is best on islands and my favourite cities are Šibenik, Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar
Yes I would have to say I personally prefer Split over Zagreb. I haven’t been to Šibenik and Zadar - would you recommend them? I have been to Dubrovnik, and the prices were just absolutely insane! I could only return there if I was a millionaire ahah!
As a Croat from Slavonia (eastern continental Croatia), someone who's impartial in this subject (Split-Zagreb rivalry) I would ALWAYS in a split moment choose Zagreb over Split to be much, much more interesting, and also more beautiful than Split! Yes, there's Diocletians palace in Split and Adeiatic sea but other than that and the Riva promenade Split doesn't offer too much in comparison to much larger, more elegant, sophisticated and more interesting Zagreb that has to offer huge number of things if someone actually prepare before! And as I can see so many tourists only tend to see smallest fraction of Zagreb that even doesn't include major part of the historical center let alone many other cool places!
@@lovrocalicjoca941 I agree 100% ! Zagreb is definitely very worth visiting for atleast several days and even more since in it's close proximity there are many other amazing places of highest value like majestic medieval Trakoscan and Veliki Tabor castles, Kumrovec - largest open air etnological museum and birthplace of J. B. Tito, Plitvice Lakes, amazing baroque era city of Varazdin, astonishing Krapina Neanderthal prehistoric man museum, and many more!
i also been in most balkan capitals but Tirana was the city for me full of youth night life is outstanding parks, trees everywere lakes, mountains in half an hour you are in Durres and in the Adriatic sea so for me is nr 1 - Tirana, nr 2 - Sofia Bulgaria very similar with Tirana, nr 3 - Athens, nr 4 Istanbul, nr 5 Budapest, nr 6 Belgrade nr 7 Zagrep, nr 8 Skopje, nr 9 Lubjana
As Croat and person from Zagreb think that my city should be in top 5. and also our good friend Ljubljana. Zagreb has Medvednica mountain really close to city which is nature park and you can get to the top with cable car, also pretty good night life and some interesting museums as Museum of broken relationships, Technical museum, Museum of hangover and so on. Zagreb had for many years the best Christmas market in Europe, just to let you know. I think you haven't explore enough of the city, sorry, innit?! Belgrade is a good city for a night life, without any doubt, but Zagreb has a way better historical attractions, public transportation, cleaner city and so on. In my opinion, Bucharest is a way better city than Belgrade from the touristic perspective (no hate to our friends Serbs).
@@TravellingWithCon It's hard to see how you could find Zagreb or Ljubljana, especially the latter, less charming than Tirana. The weather is the only explanation I can think of.
@fluidice1656 Both, Zagreb and Ljubljana are beautiful and interesting cities where you can easily stay for atleast 2-3 days if not more since there are many things to do there unless you're only looking after drinking and parties although both cities do have these too! And yes, I can't stop wondering how the hell Tirana ended as better than these two that are much, much more beautiful cities!?
@@fluidice1656 38 degrees was unbearably hot ahaah. Cheaper prices in Tirana, a vibrant charm to the city, some interesting history and museums, good affordable food. Yes, not as pretty as Ljubjana or Zagreb, but a personal preference
I visited Prishtina and my impression was it is very poor and not interesting city. If we are talking about capitals I suppose you need to have country first. But Kosovo is as I know just part of Serbia.

The beaches were certainly packed, but I did feel Dubrovnik in Croatia was a lot more packed compared with Budva! Budva Old Town did feel much quieter at night
I been to Budva every summer since i am born in 70s and i as you always complained about overcrowd and beaches but after i travel and see almost all Mediterranean cities i will never ever complain again ,Budva has 4 km long beach ,somewhere narrow ,somewhere wide (after pedestrian tunnel its very wide) while other EU cities i been 2 (more then 50 ) have tiny beaches and some even none . Like where is beach in Split,Dubrovnik ? Only tiny beaches and almost all cities i been in Italy on coast have no beach at all ,like Belgrade which is not even on the sea has more beaches then all Italian coast cities i have been
Why do you people call this part of europe ballcans??do you even know the meaning of it??its a shame that people dont really know the reall name of this region...for all the dummys that call this region ballcans ..you should know that the real name is the illyrian peninsula...ballcans is a turkish name for high mountains....hoppe you learnt some thing
I call it the Balkans, and I am from the Balkans. "Balkans" just means "mountainous". By the way, nobody has ever used the term "Illyrian" for this region (at best only the West Balkans is Illyria). If you so desperately don't want to call it Balkans and want to avoid "South-Eastern Europe", the proper name for it is "Rumelia"

Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's.
The name it self has a suffix, '' -iye '', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to',
just like the Latin suffix of '' -ia '', which exists in such country names like
Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Latv-ia, Roman-ia etc etc again meaning 'land of/belonging to'.
Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble '' Türkiye ''
we got various spellings like;
Turquía (in Spanish),
Turchia (in Italian),
Turquie (in French)
Turkei (in Germn) and
Turkey (in English)
all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye.
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )
Best wishes. ;)

Bucharest is 1st place. There, I fixed the video.
I agree with everything you said! 🇧🇦 I think Sarajevo is one of the best cities to visit in Europe, with some of the best people!
I found Podgorica to be very nice. In fact I returned there again. The vivid blue cystal clear water that runs through the capital is stunning.
I liked Podgorica it had a nice river and lots of parks and nice food and very friendly people.

How did you rank the cities?
I am not agree!
Just based on personal preference! What would your list be? 🤔
Thanks for your comment! Maybe I should return to Bucharest and discover the other parts of the city another time 🇷🇴
I am from Belgrade and your ranking and review of Belgrade is very objective. Thank you.
Thank you! I’d like to return to Belgrade one day 🇷🇸
@@AlexM-t6h Beograd je najbolji na Balkanu. Belgrade is best in Balkan.🙂
Pretty good list but I would put Tirana at number 3 or 4
I did certainly like the energy in Tirana! 🇦🇱
I am planning a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro in may. Is it a good time to visit? Also is Bosnia and Herzegovina safe to travel to?

I certainly liked Athens, it surprised me having read so many negative reviews before going! It’s vibrant, colourful great food, history and nightlife! 🇬🇷
Is this ranking from your personal view of the capitals or development of capitals?
Personal opinion on city I preferred visiting for tourism!
Judging solely based on appearance, I would put Sofia in the first place, followed by Ljubljana and Zagreb. But if we take into account the sightseeing factor, i.e. keeping tourists busy for as long as possible, then Athens is indeed on the first place. 😃
Sofia certainly has some very grand and impressive architecture! 🇧🇬But yes Athens is a good city for tourists
Sofia is not a beautiful city. The Bulgarians have a joke:"what's the best thing to do in Sofia- to get out of there." But it probably has to do with the rest of the city, not the city center.

I think that the best city is one where you have friends that could show you local hidden places and take you around, so you could have good time .
Friends who drinks, preferably...
That is a very true statement - travel is always better with an expert local to show you things!
Tirana has a lot of potential. The people there a very perhaps the most isolated so if you're an outsider, you'll stick out like a thumb.
Dubrovnik is very pretty, but extremely expensive! One of the most expensive places I’ve been!
Split is not capital city.
@@TravellingWithCon I saw you've been in Oslo - did you find it cheaper than Dubrovnik?
Questioning Romania being in the Balkans is so stupid. Take some geography lessons!
@@AlbanianManIB How is it geographically in the Balkans? How? Look at a map, look where the Danube is. If that's not a frontier than fk me I guess.

@@TravellingWithCon I've only been there once for a few hours, I thought Perast was really nice and obviously Kotor too. I did not go to Budva or Tivat.
It is Illyria anyway
I have been to seven Balkan capitals so far, and my ranking would be:
