What is Anorexia Nervosa?
According to the NHS UK: Anorexia nervosa (often called anorexia) is an eating disorder and serious mental health condition.
People who have anorexia try to keep their weight as low as possible. They may do this in different ways, such as not eating enough food, exercising too much, taking laxatives or making themselves sick (vomit). This can make them very ill because they start to starve.
They often have a distorted image of their bodies, thinking they're fat even when they're underweight.
Men and women of any age can get anorexia, but it's most common in young women and typically starts in the mid-teens.
What nail changes can be seen in Anorexia Nervosa?
Not everyone with Anorexia will have finger nail changes, but they might include:
- Beau's lines. These are visible lines running across the nails which could be due to zinc deficiency.
- Brittle nails potentially due to low iron, biotin, and zinc.
- Koilonychia which are spoon shaped nails associated with iron-deficiency anaemia.
- Leuconyhia which is a white discoloration of the nail due to zinc or selenium deficiency.
- Finger clubbing where there is enlargement of fingertips and nails which could be due to heart of lung issues secondary to nutritional issues.

Thanks. Yes to clarify - just because you have these nail signs DOES NOT mean you have anorexia. They can just been seen in some people with anorexia. There are many other causes for these nail signs.
