I have seen this subject beaten to death. I own two original Rolex, two 1960s Daytona, of which one is an original Paul Newman. So, probably a 100kUSD watch in today's market. Yet, I just purchased a Steinhart Ocean Once (and used!) and enjoy it immensely. No reason today to dish out 15k euro at once, when what many like me are seeking is to rotate watches on their wrists going for different looks every few days. Steinhart has 99% of the looks, great quality at un UNBEATABLE price. Rolex found the proper look for a manly watch - took them decades - I don't see the need to re-invent the wheel each and every time and, contrary to what you are saying, Jenni, I DO see value in copying - quality copy - such amazing design. Though I DO own Rolex as pointed above, I would never, ever buy a Submariner for 15k euro today .Thanks for the presentation - it helped me illustrate better my point where the Steinhart kicks ass

Thank you for having the courage as a Rolex owner to point out just how hard Steinhart works to produce and provide watches of such high build, fit and finish quality at such a LOW (10th the) price. Steinhart deserves all the praise and success they rightly receive. And also unlike Rolex, they actually LIKE their customers and provide wonderful customer service.

All in favour of homage watches, and would love this Steinhart. In my experience the people that are most vociferously opposed to homages are ones who use their watches as a way of showing off how rich they are and they hate the fact that people can get a v similar look for much less.

A “good” watch is one that brings a smile to its owner’s face. Maybe it’s out of a sense of pride, accomplishment, or simply because he or she likes the watch. An homage, an original, or something in between can generate a smile. At the end of the day, there’s room for all watch collectors. Jenni, as a metallurgist, I have to correct you here. 904L steel is not more scratch resistant compared to 316L. It has better anti-magnetic and anti-corrosion properties. 316L is actually harder than 904L. 904L steel feels shinier because of the higher amount of chromium compared to 316L but also be aware that 904L contains more nickel. So, if you're allergic to nickel, go with titanium (316L also contains nickel, though lower than 904L).

I have great appreciation for homage watches, especially one that emulates one of the most classic watches of all time, the Pepsi Rolex GMT-Master. The Steinhart pays respect to a great watch created for Pan-Am pilots in the 1950’s and remains one of the most sought after watches by enthusiasts. Although strikingly similar to the GMT-Master, the Steinhart is clearly not a Rolex but beautiful nonetheless.

Not many people can go spend $10k plus on a Rolex but many can go out and get a homage that still functions beautifully and gives you that expensive, classic look of a GMT MASTER 2, Rolex Sub, or even an Omega Speedmaster. These pieces aren’t fakes they are just the reality pieces for an average Rolex or Omega or any expensive watch lover. These homages expand the watch community to not only those who have an unlimited budget but to those who have a tight one. Why would Rolex wish to allay expenses? Have you ever seen Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel or the likes having promotions or wishes to cut cost so as to make it more affordable? No. Why? Artificial brand prestige. Tbh these Brand all have something in common making smaller and less premium items to target groups of people that wishes to enter luxury market with a “ statement “ piece. It’s actually marketing 101 no “luxury” brand would ever reduce their price ever. During the pandemic in March, Chanel and LV reopened in China after China successfully controlled the pandemic and they thereafter increased the starting price of multiple products. It does not make sense financially, but brand prestige and “luxury” a statement piece are all things that influence people to purchase luxury items even during the pandemic to show they are well off. Humans are way more superficial than you think. So Rolex being a cheap entry watch to the world of luxury the last thing they would wish to do is lower their brand recognition/ prestige. Any non watch people would recognise Rolex as a symbol of success. Not everyone would be able to recognise grand SEIKO which makes fabulous good priced pieces. Why? Rolex brand recognition has been deeply ingrained into everyone for being reliable, no fuss and a status symbol for those who just made it in life. Everyone is willing to pay for the price it’s least of Rolex concern to sell at a lower price. To lower ones price is akin to setting up for customer thinking that promotion would be around the horizon that’s the last thing any brand would wish to do if they wish for brand prestige.

I am really enjoying Homage watches, as they open the market to established luxury designs to people who are into watches but not necessarily have the budget to go for the originals that came up with the design. Our art teacher always encouraged us to copy in class, because nice art brings joy to people, so spreading that joy is a good thing :)

Of the 1% of people that do notice, 99% won't mention it. It's only that rare breed, the watch geek that will (a) notice, and (b) actually say anything to you about it. So don't worry about any potential embarrassment of having to respond to "Is that a real Rolex" with "no, it's a Steinhart/Parnis/Tisell/Squale/etc/etc." Odds are it'll never happen!

@@susfu4988 No I'm not worried - I wouldn't be remotely embarrassed by ANY watch I chose even though as I'm pointing out people regularly do care about what others think.
I too have been wearing watches for many years and although this is a hypothetical situation it does actually happen. My comment is on the reaction of the wearer which is often telling.
1.Many homage wearers do because they can't afford or aren't willing to pay for luxury brands and are happy with their choice.
2.Many fake or replica wearers are obviously trying to deceive and will if they can.
3.Many Rolex wearers I've come across are disappointed that people often think their extremely expensive watch is a fake anyway.

They both have a spot in my collection and they both fill totally different purposes. I work at a kindergarten and I use my Steinhart as a daily beater, since it sometimes can become quite rough when playing around with 17 children all day long 😂 I find my work to be the perfect place for a homage watch, that’s sturdy and of good quality in itself and does not cost a fortune so that I can easily play around and bash it without worrying about damaging it. And still I get the look that I want 👍

If you don’t want to buy a Rolex and think it’s to expensive, why buy a replica that’s pretending it’s the thing that you don’t want to buy??? Why not buying something else entirely? Is it to impress people who can’t tell the difference? To impress girls with wealth that you don’t have? But hey, if you like wearing something made in a Chinese sweat-shop for a fraction of the cost you paid for it, and pretending that it’s something that it ain’t, then good for you 👍 I really don’t understand why you keep writing the same thing over and over? 😂 Sure, you paid $500 for a cheap replica, and you think you got a “sweat deal”. And ok, in your own world it looks the same... 😳 But in my world, it doesn’t matter if it’s the best replica in the world, it’s STILL NOT A ROLEX 😂 Doesn’t matter how hard you try, you’re still wearing a fake... It’s the same thing with the Adidas-pants we all wore in high school. There were a lot of guys wearing fakes. But we all knew who wore fakes and who wore the real deal. And wearing the real deal is just cooler, no matter how hard you try convincing yourself otherwise 👍🍾

I look at homage watches the same way I look at kit cars that were designed to be raced and probably destroyed on a race track. Would I ever take a 1965 Shelby Cobra to the race track? No, never the surviving Shelby Cobras are extremely expensive and rare. However, I would take a Factory Five Racing AC Cobra kit car to the track any day of the week and race the car like the original 65 Shelby Cobra was intended to be treated.
Do I ever see myself wearing a Rolex 126710BLRO as it was originally intended to be worn as being steel Rolex Sports model? At the current prices? never. It would be a safe queen or instantly flipped to buy the Steinhart GMT and to pay off the rest of my student loans.
The Steinhart GMT in this video is my Cobra kit car. I would wear it as it was meant to be worn, it would probably never leave my wrist for the foreseeable future.

But yes, if I had an original ‘65 Shelby AC Cobra 427, no, I wouldn’t drive it but every so often, but I’d drive the hell out of my replica.

I look at them pretty close to how you describe as a "trial" watch before blowing away thousands on a real deal. Another aspect for me is that for about one grand I can get myself a small selection of pretty decent homage watches (consider I can spend a long time to do research on what is the best brand for the money, which often the answer is San Martin), to mix it up and suit my mood better. Another nice thing about them is that you don't have to be so afraid of them, but at the same time you do learn to subconsciously learn to be weary of it being there (like for instance when doing some really dirty or rough work, or just in general not bang your left wrist on any metal surface).
And on a different note, I am a huge fan of watches, and I constantly dream of Omega, Rolex, Patek, etc, I would not actually purchase one at this point in my life simply because it wouldn't pair well with my income or savings. Instead I would like to have a small carefully selected collection with a mix of everything from Rolex homages to more original designs from Timex, Citizen, Seiko, etc that are in the same pricerange. And this is also why I think the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a blessing for someone like me, because even though I could just drain a huge sum of my savings on a Speedmaster, this Bulova is a good option, and I don't even feel like it's a cheap replacement of a Speedmaster, rather a watch with it's own history, it's own unique design, and frankly a good looking piece. The big, black dial does in my eyes reminds me of the dark emptiness of space, and it even makes me feel lonely when looking at it, and I like that feeling because I think that's how the astronauts would have felt it too when being alone and so mindblowingly far from the rest of the human race.
And on a last point here about homage watches. And this is more a question based around a critical observation: Why would a $250 Chinese Daytona replica be considered a homage, whilst something like Tag Heuer Autavia is not? I have seen homages of other popular watches which also have done several huge design choices that differ them from their "original", just as TH has done, but they are still considered homage watches? Is it simply because of the different price and movement of the Tag that makes them not a homage?

When I first started as a collector I would stay clear of homage watches as I felt they were cheaper quality version of the real deal at best. Now that I have been lucky enough to get the Rolex and others, my views have softened and I've even bought a few homages, mostly to feature on my channel.
And you have to remember that even huge brands have copied one another to some extent, sometimes blatantly.
As usual, amawing video, keep it up, all the best.

In my opinion it is absolutely okay to wear hommage watches as long as they have some unique design elements, which the steinhart definitely has. I don’t mind homage watches because everything is an homage at this point. And I think that people that hate them, hate mostly the fact that it is more difficult to see that they own a specific expensive piece. There is a lot of vanity among watches enthusiasts and we can see that relatively affordable watches can be disregarded based in their price alone (cheap vs affordable for ex).

What about the Cartier Santos, the Vacheron Overseas, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, the Richard Mille RM-02... original designs keep coming out all the time, it's just that it takes effort and money to do them. Homages are just for brands that want to exploit a legal hole and sell their own version of another brand's design.

    • @Morachi51

@@Chris-es3wf Yes, but the basic question is legal. Rolex does not own the design of the pepsi gmt. What I meant is that the watch has meaning for the owner not to people around that get fooled looking at a type of design that almost every watch brand makes! For example the classic diver watch (created by Blancpain by the way). Is it unfair to Rolex? In a certain way yes, but it is also a big advantage! Eventually everybody wants to own one of those and not one of the replicas! By the way Rolex could make 600 dollars pepsi gmt? But they don’t! Why? Because they do not need or want to! Rolex do not loses costumers with the Steinhart... They gain prestige and the ability to sell quality steel watches at the highest price possible. It is a better business to successfully sell 10000$ watches than 600 ones!
